Nannochloropsis oculata is a common microalga that can be found in marine water. One of the most commonly used media for microalga culture is F/2 media; however, the optimum F/2 media composition for N. oculata growth is rarely informed. Therefore, the aims of this study are to determine the effect of F/2 medium modification on the growth of  N. oculata and the antioxidant activity of N. oculata. This study consists of several procedures including; cultivation, growth observation (cell density and biomass), extraction, and antioxidant activity of N. oculata extracts. The highest growth (cell density and biomass) of N. oculata was found in media F/2 + 0.5 ml, while the lowest was in media F/2 - 0.5 ml. The strongest antioxidant activity of N. oculata was found in media F/2 + 1 ml, and the lowest was in the media F/2 - 0.5 ml. Media modification gave different results on cell density, biomass, and antioxidant activity of microalgae N. oculata.

Recently, microbial-based iron reduction has been considered as a viable alternative to typical chemical-based treatments. The iron reduction is an important process in kaolin refining, where iron-bearing impurities in kaolin clay affects the whiteness, refractory properties, and its commercial value. In recent years, Gram-negative bacteria has been in the center stage of iron reduction research, whereas little is known about the potential use of Gram-positive bacteria to refine kaolin clay. In this study, we investigated the ferric reducing capabilities of five microbes by manipulating the microbial growth conditions. Out of the five, we discovered that Bacillus cereus and Staphylococcus aureus outperformed the other microbes under nitrogen-rich media. Through the biochemical changes and the microbial behavior, we mapped the hypothetical pathway leading to the iron reduction cellular properties, and found that the iron reduction properties of these Gram-positive bacteria rely heavily on the media composition. The media composition results in increased basification of the media that is a prerequisite for the cellular reduction of ferric ions. Further, these changes impact the formation of biofilm, suggesting that the cellular interaction for the iron(III)oxide reduction is not solely reliant on the formation of biofilms. This article reveals the potential development of Gram-positive microbes in facilitating the microbial-based removal of metal contaminants from clays or ores. Further studies to elucidate the corresponding pathways would be crucial for the further development of the field.

The experiment was conducted to investigate the performance of three different genotypes (BARI Sarisha-6, BARI Sarisha-8, and BARI Sarisha-11) in two different media viz., MS and B5 with different concentrations of phytohormone (2, 4-D) for callus induction from uninucleate stage anthers of Brassica and subsequent plant regeneration in MS media with different concentrations of phytohormone (BAP and NAA). Among the genotypes, BARI Sarisha-8 showed the best performance for all the parameters of callus induction. The performance of BARI Sarisha-6 was poor compared to others. Maximum rate of callus induction (%) was observed in MS + 0.5 mg/L 2, 4-D followed by B5 + 0.5 mg/L 2,4-D. The media combination MS + 1.0 mg/L BAP 0.3 mg/L 2,4-D showed the best performance for maintenance of calli. Significant variations were observed among the genotypes and media composition for shoot regeneration. Among the genotypes, BARI Sarisha-8 showed the best performance for shoot regeneration followed by BARJ Sarisha-l1. The genotype BARI Sarisha-8 produced higher percent of shoots/calli and required minimum days for shoot initiation. Higher percent calli without shoot were produced by the genotype BARI Sarisha-6. The media combination MS + 2.0 mg/L BAP + 0.5 mg/L NAA showed the best performance for shoot regeneration and required maximum days for shoot initiation. <p>Shiny dome-like structures measuring less than 1mm in length were excised aseptically from shoot tip buds of infected of two cassava (<em>Manihot esculenta</em> Crantz) local cultivars (Boma and Mpelo Nlongi) and cultivated <em>in vitro</em> in two types of media with different combination of growth hormone: Murashige and Skoog supplemented of sucrose (20 g/l), Naphtalenacetic acid (NAA, 10 μM), Ben-zylaminopurine (BAP, 0.66 μM) as well as Gibberellic acid (GA3, 0.1 μM) with 80 mg/l of Adenine sulphate and MS-free growth regulators. After four weeks, data were scored: 29.5% responding explant with callus formation and 20.5% responding explants to shoot development in the medium with growth regulators for the cultivar Boma whereas the cultivar Mpelo-Nlongi presented 5.7% and 25.7% respectively of callus formation and shoot development. The cultivar Boma presented a tendency more pronounced for the callus formation rather than with the shoot development contrary to the cultivar Mpelo-Nlongi. In regards of this experiment, it was shown that the media composition and genotype are essential factors, which influence in vitro growth, mainly the shoot development, in the culture of meristems for cassava local accessions.</p>

Changes in species composition, richness, diversity, biomass (biovolume), and spatial community structure of a lotic periphyton community were observed under experimental acidification (mean pH 4.5) with and without aluminum, in troughs fed from an oligo-dystrophic creek (mean pH 6.7). in experimental and control troughs, the community was dominated by diatoms throughout the treatment. Achnanthes linearis was dominant in all troughs before treatment as well as in the control during the experiment. Eunotia pectinalis, which was rare in all troughs before treatment, became dominant in the acidified troughs. After 3 mo of acidification, algal cell density and biomass were respectively 30 and 40–70 times higher in the treated troughs as compared with that in the control. The Sow diversity (H = 1.45–2.30) characteristic of the control trough, increased to 3.3 in the treated troughs after 1 mo of acidification, but after 3 mo of experiment the diversity was slightly lower in experimental troughs. In the control trough, spatial organization of the community was characterized by monolayered arrangements during the whole experiment, in both acidified troughs (acid and acid plus aluminum) the community became multilayered (3–4 layers). The increased complexity of the community in the acidified troughs seemed to be related to a decrease in the abundance of grazers in the periphytic community, mainly the collector–gatherers Ephemeroptera and Orthocladiinae.

This study aimed to observe the anatomical structure and density of secretory cells as well as knowing activity of ethanol extract aktioksidan associated with cell density of the rhizome of Curcuma xanthorrhiza secretion originating from Sub Pengaron Banjar regency, South Kalimantan. Making preparations rhizome anatomy carried out by using Free Hand Section, the analysis of antioxidant activity using DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-pikrilhidrazil). Observations consisting of rhizome anatomical structure of cells of the epidermis, the cortex, endodermis and the central cylinder. In epidermal cells contained little hair cover, the cortex and central cylinder composed of parenchymal cells, cell secretion and the carrier files. The antioxidant activity of ethanol extract obtained from the calculation rhizome Consentrasion inhibition (IC50) ranged from 17.70 to 55.22 ppm. IC50 value of 17.70 ppm rhizome ethanol extract has antioxidant activity 5 times weaker compared to the control of vitamin C (IC50 3.71 ppm) and 3 times weaker than BHT (IC 50 5.57 ppm). At 55.22 ppm IC50 extract has antioxidant activity 15 times weaker compared to the control of vitamin C and 10 times weaker than the BHT. Secretory cell density relationship with the antioxidant activity in test with linear regression analysis showed that there was no relationship between the density of secretory cells per unit area with antioxidant activity in the rhizome of Curcuma xanthorrhiza.

Simultaneous saturation of the metallic surface with sulphur, nitrogen and carbon named sulphonitrocarburizing (SNC) process - may be carried out in a multitude of variants, differ in media state of aggregation which provide the elements in native state, or differ in phase composition. The most commonly used media in SNC process are liquid or gaseous and from standpoint of phase composition, there are media made of compounds generator of the cyanides, representing important source of carbon and nitrogen, and as a sulphur source, may be used iron sulphide, sodium sulphide, sodium thiocyanides or ammonium. Carbamide/urea (CON2H4) it is frequently used in the media composition met in nitro-carburizing or carbo-nitriding process, alongside being added carbonates (sodium or potassium carbonate), thus resulting in cyanides (primary sources of the elements helping superficial saturation of the metallic products), as a result of the reactions which take place at the operating temperature of process. The medium toxicity decreased, based on carbamide used in nitrocarburizing and in particular, SNC process, being possible by carbonates replacing with ammonium chloride. This paper quantify the possibility of using solid powder mixture constituted of carbamide, in order to achieve SNC process of the iron matrix and effects quantification varying the percentage of the solid powdery mixture, so that it becomes possible to control the layer phase composition, by modifying the phase composition of the powder mixture used in thermo chemical processing.

Interval pemanenan 20 hari menurunkan produksi pucuk total disebabkan interval pemanenan yang terlalu lama menyebabkan banyaknya pucuk kenikir yang berbunga sehingga menjadi tidak layak untuk dipanen.</p><p><strong>Keywords</strong></p><p>Interval pemanenan; Kenikir (Cosmos caudatus); Media tanam; Pertumbuhan; Produksi pucuk</p><p><strong>Abstract</strong></p><p>Cosmos caudatus can be used as vegetable by its shoots. Cosmos are found as wild plant so that efforts are needed to increase shoot production. Shoot production can be optimized by media composition and harvesting interval. This research objective was to investigate planting media composition and harvesting interval effect on growth and shoot production of cosmos. The research was carried out for three months at Cirebon. The experiment was carried out in two stages: (1) the effect of media composition on growth and shoot at the first harvest and (2) the effect of interaction between media composition and shoot harvesting interval at the second harvest. The experimental design for first experiment used Randomized Block Design (RBD), namely the composition of media of soil, 2:1 soil-manure and 1:1 soil-manure with nine replications. Meanwhile, we used two factor factorial RBD for second experiment. The first factor was the media composition and the second factor was three harvest interval with three replications. The result showed that planting media of soil and manure (1:1) increased the growth and shoot both in the first and second harvesting. The harvesting interval of 20 days decrease the total shoot because many branches to flower so they cannot be harvested.</p>

Eight different peat-based or peat: bark-based potting media were evaluated for their wetting performance when treated with the media wetting agent AquaGro 2000 (2–5 oz/yd3). Upon initial irrigation, no differences in wetting uniformity were observed in seven of the eight test media regardless of their media wetting agent treatments. In four media, water retention was reduced by media wetting agent treatment, however, uniform distribution of water was achieved. AquaGro 2000 improved uniformity of initial wetting in one medium in which the initial moisture content was 6.5%. Uniformity of wetting and water retention improved with increasing wetting agent rate. All media were allowed to air dry and then were re-irrigated. Wetting agent-treated media rewet uniformly, while rewetting varied greatly in untreated media (7.5%–82.5%). Less than 50% of the mass of untreated media wet subsequent to drying. Those portions of the untreated media that did wet retained up to three times more water per unit volume compared to AquaGro 2000-treated media. AquaGro 2000 enhanced uniformity of rewetting, reduced water logging, and improved drainage at all rates (2–5 oz/yd3) tested. Media composition (peat vs. peat: bark did not affect wetting agent efficacy.
