The results of this study are: 1) Islamic terms and ideas “progressive” substantially and historically are not new, because they are attached to the presence of the Muhammadiyah since its birth, and became popular when it was used as the theme of the 47th Muhammadiyah Congress in Makassar, “Movement for Change Towards Progressive Indonesia”; 2) Progressive Islam sows the seeds of truth, kindness, peace, justice, benefit, prosperity, and the virtue of living dynamically for all humanity; Islam that upholds the glory of men and women without discrimination. Portraits of heroes and leaders have been among the most widely diffused and deeply cherished of all political symbols. The political functions of such portraits grow out of distinctive semiotic qualities that set the portrait apart from other types of symbols. Judging from their public reception, George Washington's portraits — and, we believe, many state portraits — have the qualities of likeness, manifestiveness, moral efficaciousness, and sacredness that traditionally were ascribed to religious icons. From these qualities the state portrait gains a special power to bridge the distances of space and time and bring a society's representative men and women to living presence for its members. By evoking loyalties and attachments not only to the persons portrayed but also to the larger collectivities that those persons represent, state portraits function as important agencies of political integration and solidarity.

The article focuses on the dimensions of space and time in the Latvian language of science. The space dimension is expressed by the deictic constructions of place (demonstrative pronouns and adverbs), and the time dimension is expressed by prospective and retrospective constructions (adverbs and adjectives). The research material consists of the texts of scientific articles included in the project “The Latvian Language of Science in the Intralingual Aspect”. The aim of the present study is to explore research articles written in Latvian and to single out the most frequently used wording expressing the mentioned dimensions. In the present research, content analysis has been carried out to establish the knowledge gap present in the given field. It was found out that very few publications so far exist pertaining to space and time deixis in the Latvian language. The respective wording in the research material has been singled out with the help of AntConc; therefore, the present study is a study in Latvian Linguistics, with the elements of Corpus Linguistics. The content analysis and the study revealed that the deictic space and prospective and retrospective time constructions are present throughout the articles written in the Latvian language of science, i.e. in the introductory parts, in the main bodies, and the conclusions of the mentioned texts and serve the function of creating the joint psychological space of the author and the audience. They facilitate the process of communication between the author and the reader of the given texts.

Characteristics of Islamic Legal Opinion. Characterising Islamic legal opinion is a way of understanding the Islamic thought which has developed in historical reality. Islam as a divine religion, which has the holy Qur’an in the dynamics of history, experiences a dialectic process of interpretation that is strongly associated with dimensions of space and time. Every Muslim intellectual has an individual perspective in understanding the religion’s doctrine. In this context, there are visible dialectal encounters of discourse in the arena of contestation of Islamic legal opinion with a wide range of variants in understanding Islamic law. Several variants of Islamic legal opinion are revivalist, modernist, neo-revivalist and neo-modernist, or traditional, moderate and liberal. These categories are representive of the struggle of ideas in the Islamic world, including Indonesia.DOI: 10.15408/ajis.v14i2.1276

Margaret Atwood is one of the most important and influential writers alive today. Margaret Atwood’s literature, both in the form of poetry and prose, is significant to an understanding of ‘female experiences’ more broadly speaking, though, Atwood attempts to explore questions of identity. She thus attempts to achieve the creation of a space and time in which readers can think critically about the world and their place in it. This self-reflexive form of analysis is significant in a modern and post-colonial world in which issues of gender have become increasingly critical, as it allows readers both a way of imagining and a way of criticizing ourselves and our own culture and that of others we perceive around us. Her stories are acute depictions of men and women, and are therefore interested in human curiosity but also in control and power.  Atwood focus lies also in the effects and dynamics of unequal power relations.

The effects of various combinations of modalities with the dimensions of space and time on reproduction of stimulus patterns by 162 normal and 83 reading-disabled children aged 6 to 12 yr. was studied. Scores on three subtests with three different combinations of modalities with space and time dimensions were analyzed. They were (a) visual temporal input, vocal temporal output; (b) auditory temporal input, vocal temporal output; and (c) visual spatial-temporal input, vocal temporal output. Visual spatial-temporal input was superior to the other subtests. Auditory temporal input was superior to visual temporal input. There were significant differences between normal and reading-disabled subjects on each subtest so the spatial dimension gives an advantage. The spatial and temporal dimensions need to be attended to in research.
