Abstract Hog plum tree seeds (Spondias mombin L.) have a complex dormancy mechanism, which causes slow germination and great unevenness. At present, there are no efficient methods to promote seed germination. The objective of the study was to evaluate the effect of storage on overcoming seed dormancy of this Anacardiaceae. Diaspores of two hog plum trees were used, identified as Mother plant 1 and Mother plant 2, established in Tomé-Açu city, PA. Initially, it was investigated whether the structures surrounding the seeds (internal mesocarp and endocarp) prevent water absorption. For this, the diaspores of the two mother plants were sown between blotting paper, with an adequate level of water and, periodically, in the total of 144 hours, the water content of the seeds was computed. The storage studies involved two experiments. In the first, diaspores from both mother plants with a water content of around 5.0% were stored in impermeable packages, for one year, under the following conditions: natural environment of Belém, PA (average temperature of 26.8 °C) and at temperatures of 6 ± 1 ° C and minus 18 ± 2 °. The germinative response of the stored diaspores was compared with those of non-stored diaspores. Prior to storage, selection was made on the diaspores, discarding the small ones. In the second experiment, the germinative response of the diaspores of the two mother plants, stored for zero, one, two, three, four, five and six months, under natural environment conditions of Belém, PA, was evaluated. It was observed that the structures that cover the seeds do not offer restrictions to the water absorption, thus discarding the hypothesis of physical dormancy, without, however, excluding the possibility of mechanical dormancy. The storage of diaspores for one year, regardless of the storage condition, did not affect the germination power of the seeds. On the other hand, responses of great magnitude, in terms of reducing the time required for germination, were obtained when the diaspores were stored under natural conditions and at minus 18±2 °C, indicating that dormancy is naturally overcome by storage . Overcoming dormancy was a little slower when the diaspores were stored at a temperature of 6±1 °C. It was found that the storage of diaspores in an environment with an average temperature of 26.8 °C for three months provides the overcoming dormancy of most of the seeds. The intensity of dormancy varied within and between mother plants.

Vital gluten is often used in baking to supplement weak wheat flours and improve their baking quality. Even with the same recipe, variable final bread volumes are common, because the functionality differs between vital gluten samples also from the same manufacturer. To understand why, the protein composition of ten vital gluten samples was investigated as well as their performance in a microbaking test depending on the water content in the dough. The gluten content and composition as well the content of free thiols and disulfide bonds of the samples were similar and not related to the specific bread volumes obtained using two dough systems, one based on a baking mixture and one based on a weak wheat flour. Variations of water addition showed that an optimal specific volume of 1.74–2.38 mL/g (baking mixture) and 4.25–5.49 mL/g (weak wheat flour) was reached for each vital gluten sample depending on its specific water absorption capacity.

AbstractAlthough seed dormancy of temperate legumes is well understood, less is known about it in species that grow in subalpine/alpine areas. This study investigated dormancy and germination of four Vicia species from the Tibetan Plateau. Fresh seeds of V. sativa were permeable to water, whereas those of V. angustifolia, V. amoena and V. unijuga had physical dormancy (PY). One year of dry storage increased the proportion of impermeable seeds in V. angustifolia, but showed no effect on seed coat permeability in V. amoena or V. unijuga. Seeds of all four species also had non-deep physiological dormancy (PD), which was especially apparent in the two annuals at a high germination temperature (20°C). After 1 year of storage, PD had been lost. The hydrotime model showed that fresh seeds obtained a significantly higher median water potential [Ψb(50)] than stored seeds, implying that PD prevents germination in winter for seeds dispersed without PY when water availability is limited. After 6 months on the soil surface in the field, a high proportion of permeable seeds remained ungerminated, further suggesting that PD plays a key role in preventing germination after dispersal. Addition of fluridone, an inhibitor of abscisic acid (ABA) biosynthesis, evened-out the differences in germination between fresh and stored seeds, which points to the key role of ABA biosynthesis in maintaining dormancy. Further, fresh seeds were more sensitive to exogenous ABA than stored seeds, indicating that storage decreased embryo sensitivity to ABA. On the other hand, the gibberellic acid GA3 increased germination rate, which implies that embryo sensitivity to GA is also involved in seed dormancy regulation. This study showed that PY, PD or their combination (PY+PD) plays a key role in timing germination after dispersal, and that different intensities of dormancy occur among these four Vicia species from the Tibetan Plateau.

The increasing interest in<em> Arundo donax,</em> a perennial lignocellulosic species only reproducing by propagation, requires the setup of cheap, simple and reliable techniques. Considering these targets, stem cutting offers considerable advantages. The present investigation aimed to compare: i) plants obtained by different propagation methods (by rhizome and micropropagation mother plants); ii) plants obtained by stem cuttings from basal, central and apical parts of the stem; iii) different planting periods (spring, summer, autumn). The obtained results showed that the number of new shoots from stem buds was: i) higher in the spring and lower in the summer planting period; ii) higher from cuttings obtained by micropropagated than rhizome mother plants, both in spring and summer plantings; iii) decreasing passing from the basal to the apical stem portion; iv) partly unexpressed in the autumn planting period; v) lower from one-year stem cuttings as compared to two-year stem cuttings.

In addition to the dry (D) and rainy (R) seasons, a combination of the two i.e., rainy-dry (RD) and dry-rainy (DR), can also be observed in one year. The effects of the dry (D) and rainy (R) on soil are known, hence we hypothesized that the effects of the rainy-dry (RD) and dry-rainy (DR) periods on soil may differ from the former assessments. The aim of the study is to investigate the effect of six tillage treatments (ploughing—P, disk tillage—DT, loosening—L, tine tillage (a deeper—T and a shallower—ST) and no-till—NT) on earthworm abundance and crumb ratio during a long-term research (16 years) on Chernozems. The results related to the four year-groups (D, R, RD, and DR) with different residue cover. Seven degrees of cover ratio (between 12.5% and 62.5%) were selected on stubbles. Higher cover ratio (≥52.5%) improved water conservation, increased earthworm abundance (31 and 41 ind m–2) and crumb (78 and 82%) ratio (p < 0.01). R year came first in the rank of water content and earthworm abundance and DR proved to be more favorable for crumb formation. Considering the rank of soil tillage treatments, ST takes first place in evaluation of soil water content (SWC) and crumb ratio, and NT for earthworm abundance.

<em>This work deals with the effect of banana (sweet plaintain or ‘kepok’ variety) hump flour substituted to wheat flour in the making of noodle, on physical, chemical, and sensory characteristics of noodle.  A completely randomized was employed, with three replicates. Sensory analysis was conducted according to randomized group design. Four proportions of banana hump to wheat flour (10:90, 20:80, 30:70, and 40:60, weight basis) was studied. Results showed that the best physical and chemical characteristics was shown by noodle made from 10:90 proportion of banana hump to wheat flour, with 4.59% water absorption, 0.57% cooking loss, 10.37% water content, 34.21% starch content. However, result of sensory analysis suggested that the most liked noodle was that made from flour proportion of 20:80 with ‘like’ for colour, ‘like very much’ for aroma, ‘like’ for texture, ‘like’ for taste, and ‘like’ for overall preference</em>

(Chemical and Organoleptic Characteristics of Mung Bean Flakes with The Addition of Fillers and Water) ABSTRACT. The objective of this research was to determine the chemical and organoleptic characteristics of mung bean flakes with the addition of fillers and water. The study was conducted using completely randomized design with two factors namely the addition of fillers and water. The results showed that the addition of fillers and water has significant (P≤0,01) effect on the water absorption ratio and protein levels of mung bean flakes. The best treatment was obtained by the mung bean flour without the addition of fillers with 150% of addition water with water absorption ratio of 204%, water content of 5,7%, protein of 22,01%, starch levels of 61,76%, organoleptic values of aroma of 2,61, color of 2,42, crispness of 2,72 and flavor of 2,83.

The results of experiments dealing with coarse aggregate concentration influence on the concrete strength and the structure of hardened cement paste and mortar of concrete are presented in the paper. Experiments were performed on concrete with dense coarse aggregate (crushed granite) which strength is more than strength of mortar and lightweight porous aggregate (expanded clay aggregate) with strength less than that of mortar. Physical and mechanical properties of concrete with dense coarse aggregate are presented in Table 1 and the concretes with the porous coarse aggregate in Table 2. The decrease of entrained air content with the increase of coarse aggregate concentration ϕσt were determined both for concretes with dense and porous coarse aggregate. The entrained air has a significant effect on concrete strength—1% of entrained air decreases the strength of concrete about 5% [11]. The influence of the coarse aggregate concentration on the compressive strength of concrete with the constant air content is presented in Figs 3 and 4. With the increase of coarse aggregate concentration the concrete strength decreases when the entrained air content in concrete is constant. The main reasons of the concrete strength reduction are the stress concentration and structural defects near the coarse aggregate. Coarse aggregate affects the structure of mortar. Dense coarse aggregate has negligible water absorption and does not change water content in mortar of concrete, and capillary porosity of mortar remains constant when the concentration of dense coarse aggregate ϕ st increases (Fig 5). Porous coarse aggregate (expanded clay aggregate) has large water absorption (more than 16%), therefore water content in mortar of concrete is reduced and capillary porosity of mortar is significantly reduced when the concentration of porous coarse aggregate ϕ st increases (Fig 5). The entrained air content in mortar with both dense and porous coarse aggregate decreases inverse proportionally to coarse aggregate concentration ϕ st (Fig 6). The investigations have shown that suitable selection of properties and volumetric concentration of coarse aggregate can reduce stress concentration in concrete and increase the concrete strength.

This research objectives were to investigate possibility of using the waste of sago cortex (Ela sagu/Wa’a) in the manufacture of cement board and to determine the physical properties of cement board based on the comparison in proportion of materials (cement, sago, water)  and catalyst calcium chloride (CaCl2). Method were applied used completely randomesed design with tree replications in 3x3x3, with total 27 samples of cement board. The results shown that the waste of sago cortex ca be applied as raw materials to manufacture of cement board and fulfill the standard of particle board (JIS A 5908, 2003). The board have dencity which is almost equal to the target of dencity, lower value in water content, water absorption and thichness swelling so that have good performance in quality and stability dimensions. The sago cortex in side of base and the catalyst CaCl2 in 6% gave high performance for all physical properties of cement board.

Germination of Rumex acetosella L. was studied under a variety of experimental conditions to determine whether populations from old fields of different ages (fallow for 6 months to 15 years) differed in seed weight and germination rate and in plant biomass and flowering rate of the resulting plants. Fresh seeds collected from these natural populations showed differences in germination that varied with the date of harvest and the number of years since the field was last cultivated: seeds of the youngest population harvested in July germinated the best and were lighter than those of the other populations. Different fertilizer levels applied during the growth of the mother plants from seeds collected in the original old fields affected the mean weight and the germination rate of the resulting seeds, regardless of the density of cultivation of the mother plant. However, the effect of different fertilizer levels on mean seed weight varied with the origin of each population. Heavy seeds (mean weight > 0.6 mg) of mother plants from the populations of fields abandoned over 2 years ago germinated better than light seeds (mean weight < 0.6 mg). There was no significant difference between heavy and light seeds in terms of percent germination for seeds from mother plants that came from the "youngest" field. These differences in germination rate observed in field-collected seeds were also found in light seeds of the offspring generation: light seeds of the mother plant from the population belonging to the more recently abandoned old field germinated the best. Plants grown from heavy seeds that came from the other populations of older fields had more biomass than those resulting from light seeds. This difference has not been observed between individuals resulting from light and heavy seeds of the youngest population. On the other hand, these individuals had a higher flowering rate than those resulting from the older populations. These results are interpreted in relation to the successional status of the populations: high flowering and early germination rates are suitable characteristics for establishment of plants on bare ground or after a disturbance, whereas heavy seeds with more reserves ensure germination and enough biomass of the resulting plants in density-dependent conditions.

The aim of this research was to study the effects of supplementation different legumes on the physical quality of biscuit complete ration based on hymenacne acutigluma. This study was conducted in Animal Feed and Nutrition Laboratory of Agriculture Faculty, Sriwijaya University. This study was done in 2 months. A completely randomized design with four treatments and four replicates was used in this study. Each treatments were P0= 70% kumpai grass + 30% concentrate + 0% legume, P1= 55% kumpai grass + 7.5% lamtoro leaves + 7.5% water mimmosa + 30% concentrate, P2= 55% kumpai grass + 7.5% acacia leaves + 30% concentrate, and P3= 55% kumpai grass + 5% lamtoro leaves + 5% acacia leaves + 5 % water mimmosa + 30% concentrate. Variables measured were water content, density, average collision endurance, specific gravity and water absorption. The result indicated that The adding of different legumes in the ration significantly (P<0.05) affected the specific gravity and water absorption, but no significant effect on density, average collision endurance. Duncan Multirange Range Test showed that treatment of control (P0) had the highest of water absorption (264.56%). The highest content of water gravity was obtained in the treatment of adding lamtoro, acacia and water mimmosa (P3), namely 0.9 g/ml water gravity. The conclusion of this study is the addition of different legumes in kumpai grass-based diets can improve the physical quality of the complete ration biscuit. The addition of lamtoro leaves, water mimosa and acacia at the level of 5%, gave the best result in specific gravity and water absorption.
