Beauveria bassiana, an important insect pathogen was used to evaluate its effect on the feeding, behavior, histology of the digestory system and anatomy of Gallus domesticus. The fungus (strain Unioeste 4) was administrated orally treated with chicken food. Chicken feces were collected, and the birds observed for 28 days. Also, were evaluated the weight of the birds, as well as any sign of intoxication or pathological modification. Tissue samples were withdrawn to test lesions with the optic microscope. There was 100% of survival of the birds, and no behavior alteration or external lesion was found. The test group presented the highest weight gain (1383.9±54.4g). Viable conidia were observed in the feces until 24 h after feeding the fungus, indicating that there was no germination inside the digestory system. No tissue lesion was observed, providing overwhelming evidence for the safety of B. bassiana to non-target organism G. domesticus.

The black-bone chicken (Gallus gallus domesticus) is a breed of chicken that is commonly found in Thailand. This breed is known for having a number of black colored organs. Consumers have been notably attracted to the black-bone chicken breed for the characteristic darkness that is observed in many of its organs. However, the degree of darkness in all organs of the black-bone chicken is still in question. Importantly, there have not yet been any published reports on the distribution of melanin pigment in the organs of the black-bone chicken. This research study aims to examine the distribution of the melanin pigment in 33 organs of the Thai black-bone chicken. Ten black-bone chickens (five male, five female) were included in this study. Thirty-two organs including the brain, spinal cord, sciatic nerve, larynx, trachea, syrinx, lungs, heart, pericardium, aorta, brachial vein, kidney, cloaca, oviduct, testis, gastrocnemius muscle, femur, tongue, esophagus, crop, proventriculus, gizzard, duodenum, jejunum, ileum, cecum, pancreas, liver, gall bladder, omentum, abdominal fat, spleen, and skin were examined in this study. Histological sections taken from tissue samples of each of these organs were studied. The findings revealed that the presence of the melanin pigment was not significantly different (p > 0.005) between male and female specimens. Notably, the liver was the only organ in which the melanin pigment had not accumulated. Consequently, there was not a uniform pattern of melanin pigment accumulation throughout the organs of the chickens. The melanin pigment was present in all of the tissue layers of most organs, while the melanin pigment was found in only specific layers of some of the organs. In conclusion, the distribution of melanin pigmentation in the organs of each of the animals in this study was found to be different. However, in some tissue samples, such as those obtained from the liver, no accumulation of the melanin pigment was observed.

Abstract It was evaluated the influence of brine composition on physicosensory and microbiological parameters in breast fillet of marinated chicken by immersion. The experiment was constituted by five brine formulations. The proportion of brine:fillet was 2:1 (v/w) for all treatments. The marination process occurred at 5 C/12 hours, following of drainage for 30 minutes. The samples were stored at 5 C at 6 and 11 days to monitor shelflife. It was then evaluated weight gain and loss, pH determination, count of psicrotrophics microorganisms and Staphylococcus aureus and absence of Salmonella sp. The lowest values of weight gain were observed in treatments with addition of vinegar in brine, probably due to the decrease of pH close to the meat isoelectric point. This treatments also evidenced the highest weight loss during the cooking. The raw material presented absence of Salmonella sp. and a count of Staphylococcus aureus and psicrotrophics microorganisms within quality limits established by ICMSF. After 11 days of storage, the treatments with vinegar in the brine composition presented count of psicrotrophics microorganisms within limits established by ICMSF (107 CFU/g). The best textures were presented in treatments with addition of rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis) in brine composition.

Research highlights: The pine-tree lappet moth, Dendrolimus pini, can cause serious needle defoliation on pines with outbreaks occurring over large geographical areas. Under laboratory conditions, the promising potential of the naturally occurring entomopathogenic fungus Beauveria bassiana was tested against D. pini larvae as a biological control method. Background and objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate the most effective concentration and treatment dose of B. bassiana conidial suspension and how it affected the survival and feeding behavior of the pest. Materials and methods: The first experiment applied the fungal suspension directly on the back of selected larvae, and in the second experiment, sporulating cadavers obtained in the first experiment were placed into Petri dishes with healthy individuals. Different doses per larvae [µL] and spore suspension concentration [spores/µL]) were used. The second experiment was designed to investigate the horizontal transmission of fungi by exposing individual caterpillars to a cadaver covered in B. bassiana mycelia. Mortality rates were analyzed by Chi-squared tests using absolute values for total mortality and B. bassiana- attributed mortality. The lethal time and feeding-disruption speed were analyzed with parametric and non-parametric tests with the aim to determine whether statistically significant differences were observed between treatments. Results: Analysis of lethal time revealed that the 20 µL dose and 7.9 × 104 concentration yielded highest mortality, but also the average dieback rate of 9.4 days was significantly faster compared to all other treatments. In order to see whether insects stopped feeding after infection with B. bassiana, larvae weight loss was examined. Results showed that effective treatments induced change in the feeding behavior of infected larvae. The feeding disruption caused by the 20 µL treatment occurred on average 5.5 days after exposure or 3.9 days before the final dieback of larvae.

The study was designed to investigate the rate of larval (maggot) production from different culture enclosures, as well as to compare the cost effectiveness and utilization of the maggot in the diet of African mud catfish, Clarias gariepinus. Musca domestica larvae were cultured from poultry dung for five week, where upon they were utilized as a replacement for fish meal in the diet of fingerlings of African mud catfish. The maggots were cultured in four different enclosures: aluminium mobile maggotry, aluminium, plastic and wooden boxes. The harvested maggots were processed by oven drying and powdered as maggot meal. The maggot meal was used to substitute fish meal in eight diets with different inclusion levels of 0% (control), 20%, 30%, 40%, 50%, 60%, 70% and 80%. The formulated diets were fed to C. gariepinus fingerlings in triplicates for 10 weeks. The growth, nutrient utilization and survival of fish were monitored during the experimental period. The cost effectiveness of different culture enclosure was studied. Results indicate that aluminium box was the best option, giving the highest weight of maggot production, and was the most cost effective of all the culture enclosures studied. Significant differences (p < 0.05) were recorded in weight gain of fish between the control and the maggot meal-based diets, while the highest weight gain was observed in fish fed 70% maggot meal-based diet. Specific and relative growth rates were found to be high in fish fed 60% maggot meal diet, while they were lowest in fish fed 20% maggot meal diet and the control diet. The best protein intake was recorded in fish fed the 70% maggot meal-based diet and lowest in fish fed the control diet. Survival of fish was generally high (78.3%-93.30%) and was significantly (p < 0.05) different between the fish fed as the control and the maggot meal-based diets. The study confirms that maggots of Musca domestica are suitable as partial replacement of fishmeal at 60-70% inclusion level for optimal growth performance and nutrient utilization in Clarias gariepinus fingerlings.

A feeding trial lasting 63 days was conducted using 60 weaned rabbits of mixed sexes and breeds with an average initial live weight of 487.50g. The rabbits were allotted to replicates each. Cotton seed oil sludge (CSOS) was included at 0, 3, 6, 9 and 12% levels of the experimental diets respectively. The diets were isonitrogenous (20% CP). The results showed that feed intake, weight gain and feed efficiency were significantly different (P<0.05) across the dietary treatments. The highest weight gain was observed on rabbits fed diet containing 12% level of cotton seed oil sludge (CSOS). The use of cotton seed oil sludge in rabbit diet was cost effective. The percentage reduction in feed cost per kilogram of diet for the 3,6,9 and 12% level of inclusion were 2.90, 6.43, 12.04 and 15.25% respectively. The dressing percentage and percent belly fat increased significantly (P<0.05) with increase in the level of cotton seed oil sludge. A non-significant but slight increase was observed with the carcass weight and weight of the major organs (P>0.05) as the level of cotton seed oil sludge increased in the diet. It was concluded that cotton seed oil sludge (CSOS) can be included up to 12% level in the diets of young rabbits without adverse effects on performance and carcass characteristics.

The aim of the present study is to evaluate the effect of aqueous extract of Thonningia sanguinea on blood electrolytes of broiler chickens. To do this, two hundred (200) 15-day-old Hubbard broiler chickens were divided into 2 batches of 100 chickens each. The chickens in the control group (Batch C) received unsupplemented water while those in the test group (Batch E) received water supplemented with 10 g / L of aqueous extract of T. sanguinea for one week. Then, the zootechnical parameters such as weight growth, weight gain, consumption index and the level of serum electrolytes were determined. The results of the study showed that the aqueous extract of Thonningia sanguinea improved weight growth, weight gain and consumption index. At the same time, the results also showed that T. sanguinea did not significantly (p <0.05) affect the level of blood electrolytes of broilers chickens. From the results obtained in the present study, the aqueous extract of Thonningia sanguinea could be used to improve poultry productivity without damage on blood electrolytes.
