The paper focuses on the key images of perception of the novel “Krutoy marshrut” by E. Ginzburg and its English translation “Journey into the Whirlwind” by P. Stevenson and M. Hayward. It is noted that one important way to describe the special atmosphere in the so-called “camp prose” is the perceptual vocabulary, a means of depicting impressions and relat-ed experiences. The leading channels of perception, actualized in the Ginzburg’s work, are auditory and olfactory. Sounds and smells receive the additional semantic load in the text. They act as markers of the borderline of prison’s and “worldly” spaces, signals of changes in the heroine’s physical or emotional state (they are often precursors of violence), a source of important information (most often it is knocking), a means of updating the mode of memories (the smells are mainly used for this purpose). The linguistic means of expressing perceptual images is the hearing and smell vocabulary (loud and tiny sounds, knock, roar, clang, screech, scream, ringing, silence, etc.; stink, smell, fragrance, etc.) and detailed metaphors (zoomorphic, natural, musical), often based on the syncretism of perception (sound, smell, vi-sion). The English translation analysis indicates a rather high degree of equivalence in the perceptual imagery transmission, with replacement or transformation of the most important images not excluded. The study showed interpreting and transmitting the author’s metaphors and syncretic (audio-olfactory and visual-audio) images to be the most difficult for transla-tion. The transformations used by the translators are necessary for the English-speaking read-er’s understanding of the complex perceptual images of the confessional novel.

The paper focuses on the English translation of «To a Woman», a sonnet by V. Brusov. The sonnet was translated by Dina Belyaeva, an American poetess, who had translated verses by Alexander Pushkin, Mikhail Lermontov, Anna Akhmatova, Alexander Blok, etc. In the meantime, she translated sonnets by William Shakespeare and verses by Emily Dickenson into Russian. The translation analysis concluded that D. Belyaeva managed to fairly represent V. Brusov’s sonnet to the English-speaking audience.

AbstractEvelyne Accad's novel L'excisée [The Excised] (1982) has long been hailed as an indispensable component of the Francophone literary canon. However, the reception of this book in the English-speaking world has been tepid at best, despite the growing popularity of Accad's literary corpus in (mostly) the United States and in Britain. In this paper, I argue that the principle reason for the Anglophone world's aforementioned lack of attention to the novel is inextricably linked to a series of major oversights in its English translation. More specifically, I demonstrate the manner in which the mistranslations of the prosimetric structure in the narrative of L'excisée (including its biblical and qur'ānic citations) have minimized the text's intertextual significance to such a degree that the book's overarching theme—the necessity of female agency as a counter to oppressive social practices—has no symbolic structure upon which to rest. To that end, this article elucidates the semantic, semiotic and stylistic functions of the prosimetric and intertextual configuration of L'excisée, in the hopes of offering a more just and culturally pertinent translation of the text's revolutionary message to the English-speaking reader.

The article is devoted to the study of pragmatic aspects of the use of phraseology in the textual space of Carlos Ruiz Safón’s novel «Prisoner of Heaven». One of the defining features of the individual style of this well-known modern Spanish writer is the metaphoricity and figuration of aristic expression, the saturation of the text with phraseological units that play a significant role in creating a pragmatic charge of the work of art. Along with general linguistic phraseological units, which include commonly-used vocabulary, the author uses dialectal and authorial phraseological units, which is a feature of his individual style. All three designated groups of phraseological units mostly reflect the negative psychophysical and emotional state of the characters. The author uses dialectal, individually-authorial and modified phraseological units, which is a feature of his individual style. It is determined that transformation is one of the most productive and most effective ways to update linguistic means in works of art. Author’s modification of FU leads to a change in the semantics and structure of expression, gives it a more expressive or emotional coloring. Transformed phraseology is limited to individual usage and is subject to the context of the work. Modified FUs in the Zafón’s artistic space acquire certain aesthetic and artistic qualities. Their modification is mainly to create the desired stylistic effect – to achieve emotional or expressive expression, which increases the reader’s interest, focuses on the content, issues of the work, as well as reveals the potential expressive potential of the Spanish language. In the transformed FUs, not just a new meaning is traced, but a combination of the well-known and the occasional. The unique combination of different types of phraseological units in the novel is considered a manifestation of individual style and makes a representation of the individually-authorial linguistic picture of the world more expressive.

The objectives of the study are (1) To categorize the cultural terms found in the novel Ronggeng Dukuh Parukinto The Dancer(2) To describe the techniques implemented in the translation of cultural terms in the novel Ronggeng Dukuh Parukinto The Dancer (3) To find out the contribution of novel Ronggeng Dukuh Paruk and The Dancer to Cross Cultural Understanding teaching.This is a descriptive research with qualitative analysis. The writer used following steps: (a) the writer read the novel Ronggeng Dukuh Paruk by Ahmad Tohari and its translation The Dancer by Rene T.A. Lysloff, (b) the writer search the cultural terms in the novel, (c) the writer analyzed the cultural terms found in the novel Ronggeng Dukuh Paruk and its translation The Dancer, (d) the writer analyzed the technique of translation, (e) the writer analyzed both of the novel to find out the possible contribution to Cross Cultural Understanding teaching. The result of this research are (1) Categories cultural terms found in the novel Ronggeng Dukuh Paruk and The Dancer. There are four categories of cultural terms related to Ronggeng Dukuh Paruk and The Dancer. Those are material culture, social culture, activities and procedures, and then gestures and habits. (2) technique implemneted in the translation of cultural terms in the novel Ronggeng Dukuh Paruk into The Dancer. In translation the novel, the translator applied borrowing technique i.e without any change the word of culture. (3) contribution of the novel Ronggeng Dukuh Paruk and The Dancer to Cross Cultural Understanding teaching. The contribution of translation analysis of cultural terms in the novel is giving information and developing the student’s knowledge. It also can be the new media of Cross Cultural Understanding teaching.

The novel the Romance of the Three Kingdoms (Sanguo yanyi 三國演義)stands out among the most famous and influential works in Chinese literature. It was read by readers from all levels of society from the Emperor down all over the world. At present, most researches of the Romance of the Three Kingdoms focus on its English translation and its communication in a certain country, especially concentrated in neighboring countries or regions surrounding China, such as Thailand, Japan and so on. In order to provide researchers with a comprehensive and systematic review about its spread and impact, this research intends to investigate the current communication situation of the Romance of the Three Kingdoms in various countries from three aspects of communication form, communication strategies and communication effect. Then it is found that the overseas communication of the Romance of the Three Kingdoms has diversified forms and various communication strategies, but there are still some deficiencies and problems in the process of overseas communication. In order to solve these problems, this paper puts forward corresponding suggestions from the perspectives of "communicator", "communication content" and "communication channel", with an aim to provide some reference for the overseas communication of the Romance of the Three Kingdoms.

Цель перевода романа — донести читателю особенности жизни узбекского народа, укрепить узыдружбы народов, узнать литературуУзбекистана. The works by Erkin Azam are being translated into many world languages. Specifically, there are unique characteristics of the English translation of the literary works by Erkin Azam. The article deals with the translation of the national features of the novel on the basis of a comparative analysis. One of the most prominent representatives of the modern Uzbek literature, Erkin Agzam's work, "Shovqin", is distinguished by its national-cultural spirit. The work has been translated into English by Agzam Obidov. The article summarizes the national features of the novel. The interpretation and a comparative analysis shows that the translator Azam Obidov did his best to message the readers the originality of the work, which is observed in particular on the features of the Uzbek character. However, there are some drawbacks, in terms of the description of the portraits and characters in the translation of particular words and phrases. The purpose of the translation is to introduce the Uzbek people’s lifestyle to the readers of the world; to strengthen the communication among people, literature, and intercultural society.

Modern English includes a range of standard and nonstandard varieties that are spoken around the world and differ at all levels of language structure. The purpose of this article is to overview international variation of English lexis, discover similarities intersecting this diversity, find out about productive patterns of lexical change and interpret them from a cognitive perspective. The paper demonstrates the importance of internal and external sources of borrowing, considers the ways of coining new vocabulary, gives attention to efficient strategies employed to name colonial settings and to distinguish newly forming identities from British and other English-speaking communities. Varying experience of adjustment to overseas environments stimulated a high degree of lexical change and heteronymy. Although in different regions English emerged from unique colonial contexts, speakers’ precolonial experience, knowledge and intuitions about the world played a significant role in the processes of categorization and conceptualization, and hence naming. It is argued that it is possible to discern common cognitive ground for such diversity in lexis.

The book begins with the works of the first British visitors to the Pacific, missionaries from the newly formed London Missionary Society. Missionaries argued that the islanders were not “noble savages,” but instead were in desperate need of a “civilizing” education. This mission narrative also appears in fiction of the period, including William and Mary Godwin’s English translation of Johann Wyss’s The Swiss Family Robinson (1814). Throughout the novel, the Godwins and Wyss depict the tension between the Swiss family’s God-given obligation to settle the land and its dispassionate scientific interest in new species and experiences. His story offers a fictional example of both the “civilizing” rhetoric found prominently in mission narratives and a scientific interest in the islands and their value as potential new colonies. Instead of viewing the story as a German text, the British adapted the story to support their imperial mission, eventually rewriting the novel to support British control over the original Swiss colony.

Abstract In this case report, we present a novel presentation of acute epiglottitis in a patient with severe acute respiratory syndrome—coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) who presented to the emergency room in extremis and respiratory failure requiring emergent cricothyrotomy. Epiglottitis has become less common since the introduction and widespread use of the Haemophilus influenzae type B (Hib) vaccine. This reduction in cases has shifted demographics of the disease from the pediatric population towards adults with comorbid conditions. Interestingly there is a high degree of overlap between many of the comorbidities between epiglottitis and COVID-19. The novel severe acute respiratory syndrome—coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), also referred to as coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19), has been reported to affect the gastrointestinal tract and neural tissue and has been implicated in necrotizing encephalitis. We report the first known case of the novel SARS-CoV-2 virus presenting with acute epiglottitis.

This article questions the often all-too-readily adduced arguments and methodologies of translation theory with reference to the English translations of Orhan Pamuk's novel The Black Book as exemplary case studies. It argues that domestication and foreignization are problematic as linguistic categories. It then seeks to rework such intuitively forceful terms for a sociology of translation, suggesting that they regain their coherence when directed towards questions of reception. The reception of The Black Book in English translation has been dominated by domesticating readings that minimize or neglect Pamuk's engagement with local history in favour of stock categorizations of the novel in terms of postmodernism. Against such readings, a ‘foreignizing reading strategy’ is proposed, one that seeks to restore to interpretation something of Pamuk's engagement with the local, especially his treatment of Sufism and Hurufism. Translation theory, it is urged, can be more effectively and universally applied in literary studies when directed towards literary sociology rather than linguistic comparison.
