Background. Morphometry, the measurement of forms, is an ancient practice. In particular, schizophrenic somatology was popular early in this century, but has been essentially absent from the literature for over 30 years. More recently, evidence has grown to support the notion that aberrant neurodevelopment may play a role in the pathophysiology of schizophrenia. Is the body, like the brain, affected by abnormal development in these patients?Methods. To evaluate global deficit in development and its relationship to pre-morbid function, height was compared in a large group (N=226) of male schizophrenics and a group of healthy male controls (N=142) equivalent in parental socio-economic status. Patients in the lower quartile of height were compared to those in the upper quartile of height.Results. The patient group had a mean height of 177·1 cm, which was significantly shorter than the mean height of the control group of 179·4 (P<0·003). Those in the lower quartile had significantly poorer pre-morbid function as measured by: (1) psychosocial adjustment using the pre-morbid adjustment scales for childhood and adolescence/young adulthood, and (2) cognitive function using measures of school performance such as grades and need for special education. In addition, these measures of pre-morbid function correlated significantly with height when analysed using the entire sample.Conclusions. These findings provide further support to the idea that abnormal development may play a key role in the pathophysiology of schizophrenia. Furthermore, this is manifested as a global deficit in growth and function resulting in smaller stature, poorer social skills, and deficits in cognitive abilities.

Systemic amyloidosis is usually fatal, but the prognosis has improved as the result of increasingly effective treatments for many of the conditions that underlie it, notably the use of biologic anti-inflammatory agents in patients with AA amyloidosis and new immunomodulatory agents in patients with AL type. Better supportive care, including dialysis and solid organ transplantation, have also influenced the prognosis favourably. A range of specific novel therapies are currently in clinical development, including RNA inhibitors that suppress production of amyloid precursor proteins, drugs that promote their normal soluble conformation in the plasma, and immunotherapy approaches that directly target the amyloid deposits.

Osteoporosis and neurodegenerative diseases are two kinds of common disorders of the elderly, which often co-occur. Previous studies have shown the skeletal and central nervous systems are closely related to pathophysiology. As the main structural scaffold of the body, the bone is also a reservoir for stem cells, a primary lymphoid organ, and an important endocrine organ. It can interact with the brain through various bone-derived cells, mostly the mesenchymal and hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs). The bone marrow is also a place for generating immune cells, which could greatly influence brain functions. Finally, the proteins secreted by bones (osteokines) also play important roles in the growth and function of the brain. This article reviews the latest research studying the impact of bone-derived cells, bone-controlled immune system, and bone-secreted proteins on the brain, and evaluates how these factors are implicated in the progress of neurodegenerative diseases and their potential use in the diagnosis and treatment of these diseases.

As outlined in Chapter 3, 12 pairs of cranial nerves arising from the brain form one major component of the peripheral nervous system, the 31 pairs of spinal nerves forming the other. Each pair of cranial nerves has a name and number. Conventionally, they are numbered using the Roman numerals I to XII. The nerves are numbered from one to 12, according to their origin from the brain; nerves with the lowest numbers arise from the most anterior aspect of the brain (the forebrain) whereas those with highest numbers arise from the lowest part (the medulla). Several aspects of any nerve anywhere in the body are required to d escribe its anatomy and function in complete detail: • Its origins and terminations in the CNS; • Its neuronal components—are they motor, sensory, or autonomic? • Its course to and from its target tissues; • Its distribution to specific areas and structures through specific branches; • Its overall functions and specific functions of its component parts. In addition, if the clinical significance is going to be appreciated, we w ill also need to consider: • The effects of damage or disease on the nerve; • Its important relationships to other structures; • How to test whether the nerve is functioning correctly. JNK is a protein kinase, which induces transactivation of c-jun. The three isoforms of JNK, JNK1, JNK2, and JNK3, are encoded by three distinct genes. JNK1 and JNK2 are expressed ubiquitously throughout the body. By contrast, the expression of JNK3 is limited and observed mainly in the brain, heart, and testes. Concerning the biological properties of JNKs, the contribution of upstream regulators and scaffold proteins plays an important role in the activation of JNKs. Since JNK signaling has been described as a form of stress-response signaling, the contribution of JNK3 to pathophysiological events, such as stress response or cell death including apoptosis, has been well studied. However, JNK3 also regulates the physiological functions of neurons and non-neuronal cells, such as development, regeneration, and differentiation/reprogramming. In this review, we shed light on the physiological functions of JNK3. In addition, we summarize recent advances in the knowledge regarding interactions between JNK3 and cellular reprogramming.

INTRODUCTION: Now Cerebral Palsy is considered like Chronic Encephalopathy no Progressive of the Childhood and defined as any disorder characterized by alteration in the structure and function of the body, activity and participation due to a lesion no progressive of the brain in development. Several techniques physiotherapy exist for individuals rehabilitation with that pathology, however, no technique stands out as more effective in the literature. The use of the approach hydrotherapy becomes viable in several aspects structural, functional and social in the rehabilitation process. OBJETIVE: It is done necessary to evaluate, through the selection and discerning analysis of article, the evidences of the effectiveness of the hydrotherapy in children and/or adolescents with Chronic Encephalopathy no Progressive of the childhood with inferior age to 17 years. METHODS: Research was accomplished at the Virtual Library in Health in the bases of bibliographical data of LILACS, MEDLINE, SciELO, Cochrane Library and search active in national and international newspapers. RESULTS: The databases located only two article of systematic review on the approached theme. Through these, it was possible to locate for search activates six scientific articles. These were analyzed in agreement with the inclusion criteria, and finally, only three articles composed the study, where the same ones were appraised as for the methodological quality. No article of the type randomized controlled trial was found, just an quasy- randomized one. CONCLUSION: It had limited evidence of the effects hydrotherapy in that population. Like this being, future studies of the type randomized controlled trial are made necessary for the clinical conduct and for scientific community.

Abstract. We reported the case of a 36-year-old Balinese man who disseminated cysticercosis, presented neuro-, subcutaneous- and oral-cysticercosis. Diagnosis of it was based on anamnesis, clinical examination including CT Scan, histopathological and serological examinations. The patient visited outpatient clinic of Sanglah Denpasar Hospital in Bali, in June 2003 with two subcutaneous nodules in the body. Serological examinations (ELISA and immnunoblot) used both purified glycoproteins and chimeric recombinant antigen were positive. The two subcutaneous nodules disappeared after treatment with albendazole. In January 2004, the patient presented neuro-, and oral-cysticercosis. CT Scan showed multiple active lesions in the brain. During the treatment with 800 mg albendazole daily during for one month. The side effects of it such as nausea and vomit were found in that patient. Antibody responses in ELISA and immnunoblot were still positive and follow up CT scan in May 2004, it showed that very similar figures as previously. Repeated treatment with 400mg albendazole daily for one and half month was applied. Antibody responses became low, and CT scan in March 2006 did not show any active cysts but only calcified lesions.

Abstract Brain is one of the most important part of the body. Brain Hemorrhage is a severe head injury that deteriorates the performance and function of an individual. Brain Hemorrhage can be detected through CT (Computer Tomography) scan of the brain. CT scan uses narrow X-ray beam which rotates around the part of the body and provides a set of images from different angles and the computer creates a cross-sectional view. It is challenging to detect and segment the region of the brain having Hemorrhage. Hence an automated system would be handy at those times. In the proposed work an attempt has been made to segment and identify the hemorrhaged region of the brain in the CT scan slices of the image. Brain hemorrhage segmentation helps to identify the region of brain hemorrhage which in turn helps to treat the patients at an early stage. The region of brain hemorrhage is appropriately identified from the proposed algorithm.
