The Impact of Transitions to Distance and Full-Time Education during a Pandemic on the Psychological Condition of College Students

The work is aimed at analyzing the psychological state in the students of the college of music in connection with several transitions to full-time and distance learning during the COVID-19 pandemic during the 2020-2021 academic year. The study involved 95 students who applied for individual psychological help from a teacher-psychologist of the school. A total of 302 psychological consultations were conducted during the academic year. Within the framework of this study, it is assumed that the tense epidemiological situation and constant changes in the training format can worsen the psychological state of students. The analysis of the number of consultations in each month of the academic year was carried out and these data were compared with the transition to a particular form of education. The most popular topics of psychological consultations in each month of the academic year are also identified.

Topicality of the study of the attitude to the distance learning format is due to the need to study the impact of such interaction in the “pedagogue-studentˮ system on the quality, motivation and overall satisfaction of students with the learning process. The study involved 120 people from 6 six higher education institutions in Moscow. The use of content analysis allowed us to identify 8 significant contexts (areas) around which the statements of the study participants are grouped: “Roadˮ, “Teachersˮ, “Returnˮ, “Distance learningˮ, “Full-time, full-time attendingˮ, “Training, training formatˮ, “Provided, changedˮ, “Qualityˮ. The results obtained indicate that the main disadvantages of the distance learning format, according to the respondents, are the lack of live communication with teachers, a decrease in the level of motivation and self-organisation, which ultimately has a negative impact on the psychoemotional state of students and the quality of material assimilation. At the same time, among the obvious advantages, there is a reduction in transport and time costs for the road to the place of study, as well as the opportunity to study the material at a convenient time. The results obtained can be used in the development of distance learning programmes for students of higher educational institutions of the Russian Federation.

The COVID-19 pandemic, since its beginning in December 2019, has altered every aspect of human life. In Vietnam, the pandemic is in its fourth peak and is the most serious so far, putting Vietnam in the list of top 30 countries with the highest daily cases. In this paper, we wish to identify the magnitude of its impact on college students in Vietnam. As far as we’re concerned, college students belong to the most affected groups in the population, especially in big cities that have been hitting hard by the virus. We conducted an online survey from 31 May 2021 to 9 June 2021, asking students from four representative regions in Vietnam to describe how the pandemic has changed their lifestyle and studying environment, as well as their awareness, compliance, and psychological state. The collected answers were processed to eliminate unreliable ones then prepared for sentiment analysis. To analyze the relationship among the variables, we performed a variety of statistical tests, including Shapiro–Wilk, Mc Nemar, Mann–Whitney–Wilcoxon, Kruskal–Wallis, and Pearson’s Chi-square tests. Among 1875 students who participated, many did not embrace online education. A total of 64.53% of them refused to think that online education would be the upcoming trend. During the pandemic, nearly one quarter of students were in a negative mood. About the same number showed signs of depression. We also observed that there were increasing patterns in sleeping time, body weight, and sedentary lifestyle. However, they maintained a positive attitude toward health protection and compliance with government regulations (65.81%). As far as we know, this is the first project to conduct such a large-scale survey analysis on students in Vietnam. The findings of the paper help us take notice of financial and mental needs and perspective issues for indigent students, which contributes to reducing the pandemic’s negative effects and going forwards to a better and more sustainable life.

Objective: The study assesses the impact of dual enrollment participation on remediation and completion for traditional first time, full-time freshmen at a community college in Northeast Tennessee. Method: This study began with the full population of 1,232 students who enrolled between 2008 and 2012 at a community college in northeast Tennessee the fall semester after finishing high school. The population was required to have American College Testing (ACT) scores, completely fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), enroll full-time as a degree-seeking student, and complete the first fall semester. Propensity score matching was utilized to eliminate self-selection bias and enable parametric comparisons using optimal matching of dual enrollment participants and non-participants while controlling for a range of covariates. Results: The analyses showed that community college students who participated in dual enrollment were (a) 9% or nearly 3.4 times less likely to take remediation, (b) 26% or nearly 2.5 times more likely to graduate in 2 years, and (c) 28% or nearly 1.5 times more likely to graduate in 3 years. Contributions: This study contributes to the literature showing that dual enrollment reduces remediation rates and assists in timely completions for community college students. Policy recommendations are to increase equitable participation, normalize dual enrollment for students academically able to do college coursework, align state terminology with the nation, and improve data for future research.

In recent years, the problem of deteriorating health of students studying in a distance format has been very urgent. On the one hand, the volume of the teaching load, including interesting educational programs in the online format, is increasing; on the other hand, there are no sanitary rules governing the requirements for the educational process in universities. The research purpose is to establish the features of health disorders of distance learning students. A survey was conducted among full-time and distance learning students. Through the analysis of variance, the strength of the impact of each factor related to deviations in students’ health was determined. Statistical reliability was confirmed using variance and special tables. The conducted research identified informatively significant factors related to health deviations of distance learning students. The analysis of variance was used to assess the influence of factors and their strength. Reliability of the impact of factors was determined using variance and special tables. The results are reliable (p<0.001). The available literary sources do not cover the problem of ranking the leading factors. Among them, a decrease in physical activity, emerging sub-health forms, visual impairments, changes in the general psychoemotional state are of particular importance. The following conclusions can be done. The revealed features of health disorders in distance learning students are associated with a decrease in physical activity, the development of hypodynamia, emerging sub-health states, visual impairment, a change in the general psychoemotional state. The distance learning process shall be regulated by Sanitary Rules and Regulations developed for universities.

The article describes the need for timely identification and qualitative analysis of the problems of distance learning, taking into account the preferences and interests of students and university teachers, consolidating their efforts to overcome difficulties and solve problems related to objective and subjective situations, the peculiarities of using distance learning technologies in the organization of the educational process at the university. In the current situation, burdened by the spread of a new coronavirus acute respiratory infection, which is caused by the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 (2019-nCoV), the world education system (including higher education) is forced to turn to distance learning technologies. These technologies allow you to work remotely, maintaining the necessary distance, protecting the health of people (both students, teachers, and employees of higher educational institutions), excluding their close interaction during training, scientific research, in the admission campaign, in extracurricular work, etc. The authors describe the features of using the remote form of organizing training at the university so that it contributes to the maximum saving of students ‘ health, has a positive effect on their physical and mental state; minimizes the viral load in a difficult epidemiological situation; increases and develops digital literacy of students; “opens” new opportunities for remote work for the teaching staff. The article provides the data obtained in the study (survey) of the impact of the use of distance learning technologies on the health of the full-time and part-time students of the 1st – 5th year of studies of the area of training 44.03.05 Pedagogical education (with two training profiles) of the Institute of Psychology and Pedagogy Bunin Yelets State University.

Today social media has been commonly used by everyone especially the young people and the institutions too are getting in to this modern medium of communication rapidly. It has created a new world of collaborations and communication. And it has also facilitated an easy and economical way of communication between friends and families across the world. On the other side, social media has dragged the youngsters and students into it and to the extent that it fritters away their valuable time, energy and money. Many students spent most of the time in those sites which ultimately does not contribute to their lives as well as in their academic life.Now-a-days, many social media have been invented from local and multinational company in national and international level. The purpose of this research paper is to assess the impact of social media on Navodit College students. The researcher tries to examine and identify the impact of social media in the research. The objective of this study was to explore and investigate the factors compelling the college students to using social media. Qualitative and Quantitative, both research methods were used while conducting the research and this research is done in Navodit College (Tribhuvan University, Nepal). 109 Bachelors level students was involved to fill up the questionnaire of the academic year of 2019/2020. Research upon social media is more important because it has both positive and negative impact upon the students in their psychological and physical aspect.

The article deals with the problem of the influence of distance learning on the level of physical fitness of students. The use of modern information and communication technologies has led to the creation of a new educational environment, which, as part of the training, has provided students with the opportunity to independently acquire knowledge in the context of constantly updated information. The discipline «Physical Education» is one of the main practical classes in the university program, and in order to assess how the new proposed training conditions will affect the quality of physical fitness of students, we will conduct a study within the framework of physical education classes. The aim of the study is to analyze the impact of distance learning on the level of physical fitness of students. Objectives of the study: to consider the content of distance learning, to analyze the passing of the standard running 100 m., to conduct an experiment and check the impact of distance learning on the level of physical fitness of students, to draw conclusions and make recommendations. The research methods are the generalization of scientific and methodological literature, the method of mathematical statistics, and the pedagogical experiment. Organization and results of the study. The study was conducted with students of the 1st year of full-time study at the Perm State Technical University. As a result of the experiment, it was revealed that during distance learning, the theoretical part of the students mastered better, and in the practical part (running 100 m.), the results deteriorated, since most of the physical culture program was presented in the form of theoretical and methodological-practical sections, and there was no possibility of active and systematic running, mastering technical and tactical training techniques and improving them.

The article is devoted to the examination stages of the emotional response of students in university education and communication, in connection with the transition to distance education in the context of the spread of coronavirus infection and the peculiarities of their adaptation to modern realities. The basis was taken 5 stages of response to changes according to E. Kübler-Ross, which the psychologist described in her book "On Death and Dying" (1969) emotional reactions of seriously ill and dying people and modified for adaptation of students to the transition from full-time education to distance learning in connection with the current epidemiological situation and the peculiarities of their response. The analysis of each stage helps to diagnose difficulties at a certain stage in students and helps to provide timely help and support.

Abstract Objectives To assess changes in working patterns and education experienced by radiology residents in Northwest Italy during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods An online questionnaire was sent to residents of 9 postgraduate schools in Lombardy and Piedmont, investigating demographics, changes in radiological workload, involvement in COVID-19-related activities, research, distance learning, COVID-19 contacts and infection, changes in training profile, and impact on psychological wellbeing. Descriptive and χ2 statistics were used. Results Among 373 residents invited, 300 (80%) participated. Between March and April 2020, 44% (133/300) of respondents dedicated their full time to radiology; 41% (124/300) engaged in COVID-19-related activities, 73% (90/124) of whom working in COVID-19 wards; 40% (121/300) dedicated > 25% of time to distance learning; and 66% (199/300) were more involved in research activities than before the pandemic. Over half of residents (57%, 171/300) had contacts with COVID-19-positive subjects, 5% (14/300) were infected, and 8% (23/300) lost a loved one due to COVID-19. Only 1% (3/300) of residents stated that, given the implications of this pandemic scenario, they would not have chosen radiology as their specialty, whereas 7% (22/300) would change their subspecialty. The most common concerns were spreading the infection to their loved ones (30%, 91/300), and becoming sick (7%, 21/300). Positive changes were also noted, such as being more willing to cooperate with other colleagues (36%, 109/300). Conclusions The COVID-19 pandemic changed radiology residents’ training programmes, with distance learning, engaging in COVID-19-related activities, and a greater involvement in research becoming part of their everyday practice. Key Points • Of 300 participants, 44% were fully dedicated to radiological activity and 41% devoted time to COVID-19-related activities, 73% of whom to COVID-19 wards. • Distance learning was substantial for 40% of residents, and 66% were involved in research activities more than before the COVID-19 pandemic. • Over half of residents were exposed to COVID-19 contacts and less than one in twenty was infected.

Simplified classifications have often led to college students being labeled as full-time or part-time students. However, student enrollment patterns can be much more complicated at many universities, as it is common for students to switch between full-time and part-time enrollment each semester based on finances, scheduling, or family needs. While previous studies have identified part-time enrollment as a risk factor to students’ academic success, limited research has examined the impact of enrollment patterns or strategies on academic performance. Unlike traditional methods that use a single-period model to classify students into full-time and part-time categories, in this study, we apply an advanced multi-period dynamic approach using a Hidden Markov Model to distinguish and cluster students’ enrollment strategies into three categories: full-time, part-time, and mixed. We then investigate and compare the academic performance outcomes of each group based on their enrollment strategies while taking into account student type (i.e., first-time-in-college students and transfer students). Analysis of undergraduate student records data collected at the University of Central Florida from 2008 to 2017 shows that the academic performance of first-time-in-college students who apply a mixed enrollment strategy is closer to that of full-time students, as compared to part-time students. Moreover, during their part-time semesters, mixed-enrollment students significantly outperform part-time students. Similarly, analysis of transfer students shows that a mixed-enrollment strategy is correlated with similar graduation rates as the full-time enrollment strategy and more than double the graduation rate associated with part-time enrollment. This finding suggests that part-time students can achieve better overall outcomes by increased engagement through occasional full-time enrollments.
