Transformations in social sciences accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic remain under-explored. The aim of the article is to analyse scientific literature on social sciences’ transformation in light of COVID-19 underpinning the elaboration of implications for teaching a Research Methodology course to the higher education students. The present research work made use of theoretical and empirical methods. The exploratory study was of qualitative nature. The study carried out in April 2021 was based on the analysis of scientific publications selected from the Web of Science and google search by indicating the key words “COVID-19” and “Social sciences’ transformation”. The conclusion is drawn that social sciences’ transformation to the remote conduct is “a new normal” in the conditions of uncertainty. Virtual fieldwork is proposed to be a new qualitative method in social sciences’ research as some populations live mostly in digital environments. Another conclusion is that there is a need for a balance, when composing the empirical study’s sample, between respondents in the digitally divided populations, namely inclusions of both groups’ - digital and non-digital - respondents. Implications for teaching a Research Methodology course to the higher education students are presented. Research limitations are identified. Directions of further research are proposed.

This article of reflection problematizes the relationships between phenomenology and hermeneutics as epistemic places of research work through a documentary approach built in two phases. First, the text reflects on the terminological use present in the paradigms, approaches, epistemological perspectives, and research methods, thereby identifying that there is no criteria univocity in its references and approaches about research methodology treaties. Likewise, it is evident that there are methodological proposals that include phenomenology and hermeneutics in a complementary, articulated, or isolated way without allowing precise places of understanding that allow to locate their application in research. Based on the aforementioned, the second phase proposes an individual approach to the background and comprehensions of phenomenology and hermeneutics, identifying particularities that characterize them, possible theoretical-practical differences and approaches that can be established in view of their relevance from the epistemic and methodological framework of research in human and social sciences. This paper describes the research work undertaken by the authors in applying action research methodology to identify the interpretation spectrum of the withholding tax provision in respect of section 4A of the Income Tax Act 1967 and the related public ruling. There has been no similar study published on using action research to improve the clarity of withholding tax provision. This study discusses the interpretation spectrum of section 4A of the Act on withholding tax. It is essential to focus on tax clarity as tax uncertainty affect both taxpayers and tax administration. The research had adopted action research method and utilised qualitative method of data gathering by way of focus group and semi-structured interviews and concludes that section 4A need improvements and policymakers should focus their attention on enacting clear law so that taxpayers understand and comply with the law.

Abstract: Creativity is nowadays seen as an essential feature in higher education. Nevertheless, there is a discrepancy between the need for creativity and what higher education classrooms provide. This study assessed the perceptions of 1599 higher education students from two countries (1059 Brazilian and 540 Portuguese students), from two academic domains (Sciences and Technologies - Sc&T; Social Sciences, Arts, and Humanities - SScA&H), about the presence of creativity in their teachers’ instruction and evaluation practices. The study’s findings evidence interactive effects between the variables country and academic domain for most of the assessed factors: encouragement of new ideas, climate for the expression of ideas, and interest in students’ learning. Brazilian Sc&T students presented more negative perceptions of their classroom environments when compared to SScA&H students; Portuguese students showed opposite patterns of results. Some hypothetical explanations are discussed and future directions for research are presented.

“Hypothesis testing” is an integral and most important component of research methodology, in all researches, whether in medical sciences, social sciences or any such allied field. Research methodology is an essential subject in higher education, however, it is challenging to instructors because of the complexity of the course material. This study aims to highlight the conceptions, difficulties and practices of the Lebanese University research methodology instructors and research work supervisors. For this purpose, research experts constructed and validated a questionnaire. 81 instructors and / or supervisors voluntarily participated. Results showed diversification in conceptions of participants with respect to some common essential concepts within the framework of research methodology, this reflects the complexity of the content and can hinder teaching research methodology (TRM) as well as supervising research work (SRW). Moreover, the participants indicated that they face many difficulties during SRW. The majority of the instructors elaborate their own resources for teaching methodology, they implement student-centered teaching methods and variety of assessment methods allowing students to explore and practice methodology concepts. In addition, they update their knowledge and practices on their own by attending conferences, performing research, discussing with colleagues, and by reflecting on their practices. Thus, our findings imply the need to precise the competencies required for TRM and SRW, and to encourage instructors and supervisors to reflect on their practices and share their experiences.

The study aimed to explore the intentions of higher education students towards conducting qualitative research in social sciences. The study included four PhD and six MPhil students from Punjab Univeristy (Institute of Education and Research) and Eduacation University who were selected through purposive sampling technique. A semi-structured interview protocol was constructed which was validated through experts’ opinion. The respondents were asked about their feelings, knowledge, skills, interests and barriers towards qualitative research. A thematic analysis was applied after obtaining the data through audio recording and field notes. The results revealed that most of the PhD scholars did not possess knowledge and skills required to conduct qualitative research. There was no visible difference between the responses of IER (PU) and EU students. But PhD and MPhil Students had different preferences towards conducting qualitative research.

The impact of technologies in all areas is one of the main points that characterize the current society. In the educational context, recently, great efforts are being made to adapt the system to characteristics and needs of the students of the 21st century. Gamification in education consist on the use of structures, characteristics, dynamics and aesthetics of games for educational purposes, to increase students participation and motivation. The escape room is a gamified activity in which one or more teams must leave a place during a limited time solving a challenge whose goal is learning. This study pretends to analyze research trends through a bibliometric study of scientific production deposited in Scopus. 32 articles were obtained for the analysis. The results indicate an increase in scientific publications in last decade, and the main mean of dissemination are journals, specially in Social Sciences field. In addition, data shows the low impact and the absence of medium and large producers. Finally, the weight of Spain highlights and the implementation of escape rooms in the Higher Education stage stands out too.

The article deals with the experience of creation, didactic possibilities and peculiarities of the use of ecological trails. Their role in the training of future biology teachers is revealed. The definition of «comprehensive educational and scientific ecological path» is substantiated.The characteristic and structure of the complex educational and scientific ecological trail «Outskirts of Pereiaslav region», created on the basis of the SHEI «Pereiaslav-Khmelnytskyi Hryhorii Skovoroda State Pedagogical University» was created and the possibilities of its use were analyzed. Some aspects of organizing research work for secondary and higher education students are covered. A set of tasks was proposed, which were carried out and carried out directly on each of the key sites of the path.It was proved that the activity of secondary and higher education students, organized on the basis of the comprehensive educational and scientific ecological trail «Outskirts of Pereiaslavl region», promoted the expansion and deepening of biological knowledge, formed the ability to analyze and compare objects of wildlife, to find causal consequences, monitoring the environment, developing abilities for research and design activities, and raising cognitive activity.

Abstract:Among the wide range of personal and contextual variables that may be associated with difficulties in students’ access to higher education (HE), academic expectations will be the focus of this study. Academic expectations represent what students hope to accomplish and achieve in their academic life. The sample was formed by 372 first-year Higher Education students, of both sexes, and with ages ranging from 17 to 57 years old. These students completed the Academic Perceptions Questionnaire (QPA), which assesses seven dimensions of academic expectations. Data analysis considers students´ gender, scientific domain of studies (social sciences and humanities, science and technology) and the levels of parental education (parents concluded or not HE studies). Results suggest more differentiation of academic expectations in function of students´ gender and parents´ educational level. This communication presents and discusses these results, and possible justifications and implications.Keywords: Higher Education, Academic Expectations, Gender, Adaptation to Higher EducationResumo:De entre o amplo conjunto de variáveis pessoais e contextuais que poderão estar associadas às dificuldades sentidas pelos estudantes ao ingressarem no ensino superior (ES), as expectativas académicas serão o foco deste estudo. As expectativas académicas representam aquilo que o estudante espera concretizar no decurso da sua vida académica. Este estudo considera uma amostra de 372 estudantes do primeiro ano do Ensino Superior, de ambos os géneros e com idades entre os 17 e os 57 anos. Estes estudantes preencheram o Questionário de Perceções Académicas (QPA), avaliando sete dimensões das expectativas académicas. Os resultados foram analisados considerando o género, a área científica (ciências sociais e humanas; ciências e tecnologias) e se algum dos pais concluiu o ES. As análises sugerem maior diferenciação do nível de expectativas em função do género dos estudantes e se os pais frequentaram ou não o ES. Nesta comunicação apresentam-se e discutem-se estes resultados, adiantando potenciais justificações e implicações.Palavras-chave: Ensino Superior, Expectativas académicas, Género, Adaptação ao Ensino Superior.
