Abstract: This paper aims to discuss both a typology of articulation between verbal and pictorial modalities in the construal of metaphors and the potential pragmatic and rhetorical effects of the activation of multimodal metaphors in practical argumentation. To do so, we analyze six texts from governmental health campaigns in Brazil oriented towards the elimination of Aedes aegypti breeding grounds, the mosquito mainly responsible for the transmission of dengue fever, chikungunya and zika in the country. In terms of the expression of metaphorical vehicles and topics in each modality, we could identify, as a result, three main modes of articulation: autonomy, correlation and interdependence. For each mode, we showed some pragmatic and semantic effects, such as increasing metaphoricity, inducing reframing and refining referentiality. We frame this discussion by critically considering a series of different frameworks on metaphor studies, such as Lakoff and Johnson (1980), Forceville (2007), Müller (2008), Vereza (2007, 2017, 2018), Gonçalves-Segundo and Zelic (2016) and Steen (2017). In terms of argumentative roles, we concluded that multimodal metaphors were relevant in construing the Negative Consequences of inaction in regard to the elimination of breeding grounds, hyperbolizing the lethal potential of the infections; in inducing the reader’s readiness and tendency towards working collectively to achieve the campaign’s intended Goals; and, finally, in generating humor in the construal of the campaign’s Motivating Circumstances, in order to draw the reader’s attention and identification towards this necessary social action. To support this debate, we drew mainly on Fairclough and Fairclough (2012), Macagno and Walton (2019) and Gonçalves-Segundo (2019).Keywords: multimodal metaphor; multimodality; metaphor; argumentation; practical argumentation.Resumo: Nosso objetivo, neste artigo, é discutir tanto uma tipologia de articulação entre as modalidades verbal e imagética na construção de metáforas quanto os potenciais efeitos pragmáticos e retóricos da ativação de metáforas multimodais na argumentação prática. Para isso, analisamos seis textos de campanhas governamentais de saúde brasileiras orientadas à eliminação de focos de reprodução do mosquito Aedes aegypti, o principal responsável pela transmissão da dengue, da chikungunya e da zika no país. No que diz respeito à expressão de veículos e tópicos metafóricos em cada modalidade, identificamos, como resultado, três principais formas de articulação: autonomia, correlação e interdependência. Para cada uma dessas formas, mostramos alguns efeitos semântico-pragmáticos, como aumento de metaforicidade, indução de reenquadramento e refinamento de referencialidade. Tecemos essa discussão a partir de um diálogo crítico com diversas perspectivas, em especial Lakoff e Johnson (1980), Forceville (2007), Müller (2008), Vereza (2007, 2017, 2018), Gonçalves-Segundo e Zelic (2016) e Steen (2017). Em termos de funções argumentativas, concluímos que as metáforas multimodais foram relevantes na construção das Consequências Negativas da inação no tocante à eliminação dos focos de reprodução do mosquito, hiperbolizando o potencial letal das infeções; na indução de um estado de prontidão e de trabalho coletivo no sentido de atingir os Objetivos da campanha; e, finalmente, em gerar humor na construção das Circunstâncias Motivadoras da campanha, para obter a atenção e a identificação do leitor em relação a essa ação social necessária. Epidemics of dengue fever occur every 3 to 4 years in the Philippines. The risk of a dengue fever outbreak in the Philippines has been heightened since Typhoon Haiyan struck the region in November 2013 because recovery efforts have been slow to progress. The structural damage caused by the typhoon resulted in an abundance of standing water, which can serve as mosquito breeding grounds. Should an outbreak of dengue occur, infected travelers departing the Philippines pose a risk because they may introduce the dengue virus into local vector populations (of Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus) at their destinations. This study quantifies the risk posed by potentially infected travelers departing the Philippines by using a network model that incorporates predictive species distribution models, demographic features of destination areas, and air traffic volumes. The analysis reveals that a majority of travelers departing Philippine airports deplane in regions suitable for harboring Aedes aegypti or Aedes albopictus; this factor increases the likelihood of further spread of the disease if an outbreak were to occur. Because it is impractical to implement all possible monitoring and control measures at all locations connected to the Philippines, this analysis ranks the set of candidates and thus allows surveillance resources to be optimally deployed.

Introducción. Aedes aegypti y Ae. albopictus son reconocidos vectores de arbovirus como los del dengue, la fiebre amarilla, el chikungunya y el Zika, en regiones tropicales y subtropicales del mundo. En Colombia, la distribución geográfica de Ae. albopictus ha sufrido un incremento y hoy incluye ciudades como Cali y Medellín. Hasta ahora, sin embargo, no se ha recabado información concluyente sobre su infección viral y su capacidad de transmisión a los humanos.Objetivo. Determinar la infección natural por dengue en ejemplares de Ae. albopictus recolectados en un área urbana de Medellín.Materiales y métodos. Se recolectaron individuos de Ae. albopictus en el campus de la Universidad Nacional de Colombia, sede Medellín. Se confirmó su clasificación taxonómica mediante el análisis del gen citocromo oxidasa I (COI), y se extrajo el ARN total para la identificación del virus del dengue y de los respectivos serotipos. La presencia del genotipo DENV se infirió mediante el análisis del gen NS3.Resultados. El análisis del COI corroboró el estatus taxonómico de Ae. albopictus. Uno de los mosquitos procesados fue positivo para DENV-2 y el análisis del NS3 mostró una gran similitud con el genotipo asiático-americano.Conclusión. Se reporta la infección con DENV-2 en Ae. albopictus en Medellín, Colombia. La presencia del genotipo asiático-americano en una zona urbana sugiere su posible circulación entre humanos y en Ae. albopictus, lo cual alerta sobre su eventual papel en la transmisión del DENV-2, y sobre la necesidad de incluir esta especie en la vigilancia entomológica en Colombia.

A Dengue é registrada em Curitiba/PR desde a década de 1990. A incidência da doença nesta cidade tornou-se alarmante em 2002, quando os primeiros casos autóctones foram registrados no mês de abril. Aplicando a análise rítmica dos tipos de tempo, foi possível observar como as condições climáticas foram favoráveis ao desenvolvimento do vetor (Aedes Aegypti) e, conseqüentemente, da ocorrência dos referidos casos autóctones. Os resultados desta pesquisa evidenciaram que o clima da cidade tem apresentado mudanças, tornando-se mais quente (principalmente no verão e outono), o que criou condições para a ocorrência de casos autóctones de Dengue em Curitiba. Outros aspectos ambientais também foram envolvidos na análise. Dengue Fever in Curitiba/PR: a climatological approach about March/April - 2002 event Abstract Dengue Fever has been registered in Curitiba/PR since 1990 decade. Such fact went on and became alarming in 2002, when the first autocton cases was registered in April. Applying the rhythmic analysis of weather types of, it was possible observe how the climate conditions were favorable to the vector development (Aedes Aegypti) and, consequently, the autocton cases happened. This research results showed that city climate has changed, it has become warmer than before (mainly summer and autumn), and created conditions to the occurrence of autocton cases of Dengue Fever. Others environmental aspects were also involved in this analises.

Adolescents who engage in heavy episodic drinking (HED—i.e., 5+ drinks on a single occasion) increase risks for psychopathology, alcohol dependence, and similar negative consequences in adulthood. We explored associations among depressive symptoms, positive alcohol beliefs, and progression of heavy episodic drinking (HED) in 3021 German adolescents (M(SD) age at baseline = 12.4 (1.0)) followed for 30 months in 4 waves, using a conditional parallel process linear growth model, with full information maximum likelihood estimation. By wave 4, 40.3% of participants had engaged in HED more than once; 16.4% had done so ≥5 times. Depressive symptoms were indirectly related to baseline values of HED (through positive beliefs and wave 1 drinking frequency and quantity) and to the rate of growth in HED (through positive beliefs and wave 1 quantity). Adolescents with higher levels of depressive symptoms and positive alcohol beliefs drink more frequently and at greater quantities, which is associated with initiating HED at a higher level and escalating HED more rapidly than peers with similar depressive symptoms who lack those beliefs. This suggests that, to the extent that positive alcohol beliefs can be tempered through public health campaigns, education and/or counseling, HED among depressed adolescents might be reduced.

Dengue is the most important emerging tropical viral disease of humans in the world today. Aedes aegypti is a major mosquito vector responsible for transmitting many viral diseases and this mosquito that spreads major health problems like dengue fever. The resistance of Ae. aegypti to insecticides is already widespread and represents a serious problem for programmes aimed at the control and prevention of dengue in tropical countries. The search for compounds extracted from medicinal plant preparations as alternatives insecticide for mosquito control is in immediate need. Alternative approach for control Ae. aegypti dan virus dengue using the medicinal plant will be discussed in this paper.Key words: Medicinal plant, Aedes aegypti, dengue fever, dengue haemorragi fever, dengue shock syndrome

High dengue fever cases strongly influenced by the behavior of the public them self. Almost most of the territory in urban and rural areas can be considered as potentially endemic. In the development of the Center of Desease Control give serious action against the locations of the potential for development of the Aedes Aegypti. One way that can be done in order to prevent the environment to being free of dengue wiggler is through some sort of surveys. This monitoring system is designed using Waterfall methodology using the programming language such as Javascript, PHP, CodeIgniter framework, AngularJS, and Ionic also using MySQL database. A needs analysis conducted by interviewing one of the members of Center of Desease Control’s member and the Village Head of Muktiharjo so that the design could be done, appropriate and well targeted. The results of the final project is mobile and desktop applications that can change the performance of the JUMANTIK (Mosquito Eradication Officers) with more modern, neat, and systematic application so that the data obtained can meet the desired needs. The system that has been designed has been tested using black-box method and the results of these tests indicate that all the functions contained in this system has worked well.

Background: The higher incidence of dengue fever in Pakistan demands additional efforts in order to limit the disease. Despite active public health campaigns, low public awareness is one of the factors facilitating dengue virus transmission. For effective preventive measures, the assessment of the knowledge gap and then taking appropriate steps to fill the gap is required.The objective of this study is to assess knowledge about dengue fever prevention among people visiting Benazir Bhutto Hospital, Rawalpindi.Methods: The descriptive cross-sectional study of 6 months duration was conducted with 280 participants selected via nonprobability convenience sampling. After informed consent, an interview was conducted based on a questionnaire that assessed socio-demographic parameters and knowledge about dengue virus transmission and prevention. Data were analyzed through SPSS v. 22. The study was approved by the Ethical Review Board (ERB) of Rawalpindi Medical University and Allied hospitals.Results: Out of 280 respondents, 54.6% were males and 45.4% females and the mean age was 35.0 ± 13.1 years. The respondents having high knowledge scores were 66(23.6%) while those having moderate and low scores were 159 (56.8%) and 55 (19.6%) respectively. Educated respondents (p=0.03) and urban residents (p=0.05) had higher knowledge scores.Conclusion: The majority of the participants know about dengue fever. However, only one out of every four respondents has good knowledge scores for dengue fever prevention.

Background and Aim: Aedes aegypti is the vector of dengue fever, dengue hemorrhagic fever, chikungunya, and, most recently, Zika. Dengue fever is one of Indonesia's endemic diseases. The principal tool for preventing dengue is controlling Ae. aegypti by chemical insecticides since vaccine against dengue is still under research. However, Ae. aegypti developed resistance to various chemical insecticides worldwide. Therefore, research on alternate compounds as mosquito insecticides is urgently needed. This study demonstrated the efficacy of Artemisia vulgaris extract as larvicidal, ovicidal, adulticidal, repellency, and oviposition deterrent activity against Ae. aegypti. Materials and Methods: A. vulgaris was obtained from Temanggung, Indonesia, while the eggs of Ae. aegypti were collected from Yogyakarta, Indonesia, and were hatched in Laboratory of Parasitology, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Universitas Gadjah Mada. Larvicidal activity was evaluated according to the WHO protocol; adulticidal activity was performed using the Centers for Disease Control protocol. Oviposition activity was evaluated using ovitraps added with A. vulgaris extract, complete protection time in the repellent assay was defined as the number of minutes elapsed between compound application and the landing of the first mosquito. Results: A test of the larvicidal activity of A. vulgaris extract returned an LC50 of 65.8 ppm (r2=0.9014) in 1 h and 18.6 ppm (r2=0.575) in 24 h. A. vulgaris was effective as an adulticidal, demonstrating LC50 values of 11.35 mg (r2=0.875) in 90 min, 9.63 mg (r2=0.924) in 105 min, and 6.46 mg (r2=0.925) in 120 min. A. vulgaris at a concentration of 1000 ppm was able to reach 96% of oviposition deterrent effect. The ovicidal assay, a concentration of 1000 ppm resulted in 82.67% of eggs remaining unhatched. An extract concentration of 80 mg/ml achieved 63.3±3.5% biting repellency in adults. Conclusion: This study gives a clear indication that A. vulgaris extract acts on Ae. aegypti at various developmental stages and is a potential alternative bioinsecticide for controlling this disease vector.
