This teaching note describes how using the requirement of a literature review helped students become critical thinkers. Literature reviews, as assignments, are often difficult for students because of the need for intense writing, analysis, and evaluation. As part of a larger assignment, students read 7 to 10 research articles and discussed them in class. The students were then assigned the task of writing their own literature reviews using the same research articles. The authors explain how using the practice of critical reading and critical writing helped students engage their review of the literature with a critical thinking mindset.

Critical thinking has become an important skill in today’s intensive information flow. Because individuals need to reach the right source by evaluating the information. The development of critical thinking requires the acquisition of critical reading skills. Critical reading is the reading of individuals by questioning and evaluating text. In this research, critical reading self-efficacy of pre-service teachers were examined in terms of variables of gender, grade level, the department studied, mothers’ educational background, fathers’ education background and daily internet usage time. The sample of the current research was composed of 345 pre-service teachers. The data collection process, Critical Reading Self-Efficacy Perception Scale was used. To analyze data, Mann Whitney U and Kruskal Wallis H-tests were used. As a result of Mann Whitney U-test, a significant difference was defined in critical reading self-efficacy according to the department studied. As a result of Kruskal Wallis H-test a significant difference was defined in critical reading self-efficacy and questioning, inference, analysis and evaluation sub-dimensions according to mothers’ educational background, and in critical reading self-efficacy and finding similarities and awareness sub-dimension according to daily internet usage time.

It is important to demonstrate and critically analyse your understanding of the literature within your chosen field of study or research. The chapter highlights the different types of literature reviews: the traditional literature review versus the systematic literature review. The literature review is often essential in establishing what is known about a subject area, and by association what is not yet known, allowing you to understand and explore gaps in knowledge by appraising, encapsulating, comparing, contrasting, and correlating scholarly books, research articles, reports and various other sources of information. This chapter provides guidance on undertaking a literature review by highlighting the key stages of the process: selecting a topic, searching the literature, reading and reviewing the literature, critiquing the literature, evaluating the literature, and finally writing the literature review. The aim of this chapter is to offer a clear, concise and structured way of undertaking a literature review to establish your theoretical framework and methodological focus.

This article offers a semi-systematic literature review on the concept of food values. Specifically, 36 relevant research articles were analyzed. The results underscore the novelty and rapid popularity of this concept in different professional, scientific, and academic fields. Among the findings, the article highlights how the concept of food values has evolved to accommodate the features and behaviors of specific markets. Nonetheless, one can group food values into three distinct clusters. This article expands our understanding on the evolution of food values along different dimensions (various clusters and segments related to geographic regions and social classes). It also identifies several research gaps and translates them into different research proposals.

Cirrhotomimetic hepatocellular carcinoma is a recognized pattern exhibiting cirrhosis-like growth and a reputation for evading pretransplant detection. Five cases encountered from our institution were retrospectively reviewed. Clinicopathologic and literature reviews were performed. All five patients were male, aged 50–66. Diffuse, innumerable nodules were seen grossly, exhibiting predominantly well-to-moderate differentiation with pseudoglandular and trabecular patterns microscopically. By immunohistochemistry, the tumor was diffusely positive for Glypican-3, showed sinusoidal capillarization by CD34 and slightly increased MIB-1 proliferation index. At up to 3.25 years of follow-up, our cohort of cirrhotomimetic hepatocellular carcinoma had no recurrence in 60% (3/5), solitary recurrence in 20% (1/5) and one patient had died of disease in 20% (1/5). Literature review suggests that these tumors recurred at a frequency of 50% (19 of 38 patients).

This article discusses the integrative review of the literature as a distinctive form of research that uses existing literature to create new knowledge. As an expansion and update of a previously published article on this topic, it acknowledges the growth and appeal of this form of research to scholars, it identifies the main components of the integrative literature review, and summarizes guidelines for organizing and writing integrative literature reviews. Not addressed elsewhere in the literature, this article describes five reasons and purposes for writing literature reviews and discusses these purposes in relation to the methods for writing literature reviews. The article concludes that aligning the integrative literature review's methods with its purpose provides unity and coherence to the review.

This paper extends previous literature reviews focusing on fundraising and the mechanisms motivating charitable giving. We analyze 187 experimental research articles focusing on fundraising, published in journals across diverse disciplines between 2007-2019. Interest in studying fundraising spans many disciplines, each of which tends to focus on different aspects, supporting earlier claims that fundraising has no single academic “home.” Most of the literature focuses on two key areas: the philanthropic environment in which fundraising occurs, largely focused on potential donors’ experiences, preferences, and motivations; and testing fundraising tactics and techniques that result in different behavior by potential donors. More than 40% of the experiments were published in Economics journals. Correspondingly, topics such as warm glow and mechanisms such as lotteries, raffles, and auctions are well represented. Experimental studies largely omit the practical and the ethical considerations of fundraisers and of beneficiaries. For instance, studies focusing on the identified victim phenomenon often stereotype beneficiaries in order to foster guilt among donors and thereby increase giving. We identify several opportunities for research to examine new questions to support ethical and effective fundraising practice and nonprofit administration.

Conclusão: Bichectomia é um procedimento estético-funcional, que apresenta riscos de complicações potencialmente graves, destacando-se lesão do ducto de Stenon ou do ramo bucal do nervo facial, que provocam, respectivamente, sialocele, fístulas salivares e paralisia bucal temporária ou definitiva, além de hematomas, assimetria facial e infecções pós-operatórias.---Bichectomy is a surgical procedure in which the part corresponding to the fat pad of Bichat is removed, with aesthetic and functional purposes. Such procedure is increasingly popular in dentistry. Objective: To present a narrative review of the literature on complications associated with bichectomy surgery. Materials and Methods: A search for publications was performed without restriction regarding the year of publication, including scientific articles, clinical case reports, literature reviews, descriptive and observational studies and excluding letters to the editor, editorials, theses and manographies from the health descriptors (DeCS) “anatomy” (anatomy), “bichectomy” (bichectomy), “dentistry” (dentistry). Using Lilacs, SciELO and Pubmed databases. Conclusion: Bichectomy is an aesthetic-functional procedure that presents risks of potentially serious complications, especially  damage to the Stenon's   duct  or  the  buccal branch of the facial nerve, which   cause, respectively, sialocele, salivary fistulas and temporary or permanent buccal paralysis, in addition to bruises, facial asymmetry and postoperative infections.

The aim of this article is to present a systematic literature review of literature reviews (a meta-study) of gamification topics in e-learning with a purpose to present a high-level overview of the state of the development of the selected field. The systematic literature review of literature reviews (2010 - 2019) was performed. The academic papers (literature reviews) from several academic databases such as DOAJ, ScienceDirect, Google Sholar and WOS were examined and filtered for further study. The selected articles were analysed for sub-topics (e.g. the efficiency of gamification mechanisms) and summarized. In last 5 years, the research of gamification in various fields (mobile apps, e-health, human resource management, business development, e-learning) is getting traction and the number of research articles and systematic reviews of research articles is increasing. After filtering literature review articles, we have found out that only a handful of them – 19, which summarizes 2631 studies, are directly related to gamification in e-learning. This study shows that the following gamification mechanisms in e-learning proved themselves efficient in almost all underlying studies, but there is no broad consensus on terminology and how to group of different gamification related concepts. The research is limited to the following scholarly databases: DOAJ, Elsevier, Google Scholar, and WOS. We are aware that there is a possibility we missed some systematic literature reviews on this topic, which was indexed in other well-known databases or published using different terminology in the title or abstract. The article can serve as a starting point for the research for the scholars and especially post-graduate students who are getting familiar with the e-learning, gamification and performing systematic literature reviews. Also, developers of e-learning systems and course designers could benefit from this article by finding out which gamification mechanisms are most researched, most efficient and worth implementing. To our knowledge, this kind of meta-analysis of the literature reviews hasn’t been done in the field of gamification in e-learning for the year 2019.

The research is based on the lack of research and publications related to macro sports policy in Indonesia. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to analyze research articles related to sports policy in Indonesia. This study uses a systematic literature review (SLR). The research population uses research articles related to sports policy and the research sample uses the purposive sampling technique using inclusive and exclusive criteria. The results of this study indicate that the direction of sports policy in Indonesia is still leading to achievement sports that focus on the development of the sport itself. It can be concluded that sport has not been able to become an important aspect in wider development (development through sport) and the results of the Literature Review, it can be concluded that the Evaluation Analysis of sports policy is still very minimal.

AbstractReports of incidental pneumomediastinum in infants secondary to inflicted trauma are limited. A retrospective review of infants with pneumomediastinum and history of inflicted trauma was performed. A comprehensive literature review was performed. Three infants presented with pneumomediastinum associated with inflicted trauma. Mean age was 4.6 weeks. All patients underwent diagnostic studies, as well as a standardized evaluation for nonaccidental trauma. All patients with pneumomediastinum were resolved at follow-up. Review of the literature identified other cases with similar presentations with related oropharyngeal injuries. Spontaneous pneumomediastinum in previously healthy infants may be associated with inflicted injuries. Clinicians should be aware of the possibility of an oropharyngeal perforation related to this presentation.
