Background: Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) have a huge social and economic impact all over the world. Therefore research needs to analyse emerging risk factors for CVDs. Bruxism is a health problem that has low prevalence in the community but may be associated with CVDs. It leads to poor oral health and significantly impacts the quality of life. Studies showing association of CVDs and Bruxism are sparse and, none in Indian context. Methods: This study was conducted in two hospitals of Kangra region of Himachal Pradesh between the months of April 2020 to June 2020. Due to rising infection rates of COVID-19 cases, 160 patients were enrolled in the study and divided into two groups. 80 patients with a positive history for CVD were included as cases while another 80 patients without any known history for CVD were included in the control group. Self-reporting questionnaire and tooth wear index (TWI) were used as research instruments. Results: An unadjusted odd’s ratio of 2.43 (95% CI, 1.28-4.68) and p value of 0.0069, was found when only self-reported bruxism was taken into account. But when self-reporting of bruxism was combined with TWI, an unadjusted odd’s ratio (logit OR) of 3.16 (95% CI, 1.66-6.21) and p value of 0.000529 was found, explaining that the odds of having CVD are 3.16 times higher in patients with bruxism than in those without bruxism. Conclusions: Bruxism is significantly associated with cardiovascular diseases. More studies, with larger sample size are required to firmly establish the causative relationship between bruxism and CVDs.

Many mothers who give birth to Sectio Caesarea (SC) do not Initiate Early Breastfeeding (IMD), which fails exclusive breastfeeding. This study aimed to determine the effect of IMD management in postpartum SC mothers on nutritional status, speed of milk production, and quality of breast milk protein. Method: quantitative research with quasi approach experiment. The research design used was a pre-post-test control non-equivalent control group. A sampling of this study used the Consecutive method sampling with a sample of 20 mothers who gave birth by cesarean section (SC). Hypothesis testing uses the independent t-test and the Mann-Whitney test. The study results showed an influence on the management of IMD in postpartum SC mothers on the speed of ASI production (p-value=0.004) and nutritional status (p-value=0.028). There was no effect of IMD management on postpartum SC mothers on the quality of breast milk protein (p-value = 0.543). This study recommends that the hospital implement an IMD promotion program before the abdominal wall is closed as a form of intervention to increase milk production and maternal nutritional status

AbstractRare neuromuscular diseases (NDs) are a group of inherited or acquired neurological pathologies affecting the muscles and the nervous system. Their low prevalence and high geographical dispersion can cause isolation and difficulties in social interaction between affected equals. New technologies, such as videoconferencing, offer a complementary option for improving the health of this population. The purpose of this study was to assess the effectiveness of a teleassistance program at improving health-related quality of life (HRQoL) through social interaction in adults with NDs. The sample consisted of 45 participants affected by rare NDs. Twenty-four participants were assigned to the experimental group (EG), which participated in the videoconferencing sessions, and 21 to the control group. Three questionnaires were administered: WHO-DAS II, Sickness Impact Profile, and SF-36 Health Survey. Effectiveness was assessed by a pre-post design. An online psychosocial program was applied over three-month period. Data revealed an improvement of the EG in psychosocial variables, e.g. “Getting along with people” (z = –2.289, r = –.47, p ≤ .05) or “Psychosocial Domain” (z = –2.404, r = –.49, p ≤ .05), and in physical variables, e.g. “Life activities” (z = –2.844, r = –.58, p ≤ .05). Social interaction appeared as a relevant factor at improving HRQoL levels. High levels of satisfaction about the teleassistance program were reported.

BACKGROUND: Asthma is the most prevalent chronic disease in the pediatric age group. The disease affects different aspects of the children's lives, such as physical, emotional, social and educational aspects. Thus, more focus has been on the quality of life in these patients rather than the duration of their illness in recent years.AIM: This study examined the different aspects of quality of life in asthmatic children for the first time in this geographic area.METHODS: The study was cross-sectional conducted in 2015-2016. The asthmatic group was 100 patients aged 8 to 12 admitted to the Asthma and Allergy Clinic of Ghaem Hospital (as) in Mashhad with the control group composed of 100 healthy children of the same age and gender. The standard questionnaire pedsQLTM was used for comparing the quality of life of children in the two groups. Statistical analysis was SPSS23 with P-value less than 0.05, which was statistically significant.RESULTS: In each group, 58 patients were boys, and 42 were girls. In a comparison of the quality of life of children, the asthma group with a mean total score of Peds QL 20.99 ± 12.54 compared to the healthy children with a mean total score of Peds QL of 8.8 ± 5.41 had a lower quality of life (P < 0.001). Moreover, regarding various aspects of quality of life asthma group had a lower quality of life in physical performance, emotional performance and performance in school (P < 0.001). Nonetheless, there was no significant difference between the two groups considering social function (P = 0.267). Examining the relationship between Peds QL score of patients with asthma with various variables was indicative of the fact that Peds QL scores were significantly correlated with the gender of the patients, showing better quality of life in the girls (P = 0.001).CONCLUSION: The results indicated that children with asthma have a significantly lower quality of life compared with healthy children of the same age. Also, in examining the different aspects of quality of life, these children had a lower quality of life in physical performance, emotional performance, and performance at school, and were at the level as that of healthy children only in social performance.

Abstract Introduction: Patients with Hashimoto’s often complain of persistent symptoms despite being on optimal medical therapy. Research suggests that thyroidectomy may have a role in improving this. We investigated the change in Quality of Life (QoL), symptom burden and mental health from baseline to 1 year after total thyroidectomy in patients with underlying thyroiditis. Methods: We conducted semi-structured interviews with 96 patients at baseline and 1 year to discuss their thyroid-related symptom burden. Patients utilized prompt cards to identify and rank the severity of their thyroid-related symptoms (3 being most bothersome and 0 being no effect at all). Individual symptom scores were added to calculate a Cumulative Symptom Score (CSS). Patients also completed the validated Short Form-12 (SF-12) questionnaire for mental and physical health (scored from 0-100; higher score attributing to better health) and ThyCa-QoL questionnaire (scored from 0-100; higher score attributing more complaints) at these 2 time-points. Results: Of the 96 patients with available CSS data, there were 37 patients in the Hashimoto’s group (97% had biopsy proven thyroiditis and 24% were on thyroid hormone at baseline) and 59 patients in the control group. At baseline, Hashimoto’s patients had a higher CSS than the control group (9.94 vs. 7.13, p=0.05). Overall, mean CSS, in both groups, declined from baseline to 1 year (7.74 to 6.08, p=0.04), and over half of the individual patients, had a decline in their CSS at 1 year (56% in Hashimoto’s and 54% in control). Although, the Hashimoto’s group started higher at their baseline, they also had a slightly larger decline in CSS at 1 year than the control patients (-2.2, p=0.11 vs. -1.2, p=0.19). On the SF-12, Hashimoto’s patients had a significant improvement in their mental health (+ 6.0 pts, CI 1.8-10.2, p value = 0.007) whereas the control patients did not (+2.4 pts, CI 0.3-5.2, p=0.08). On the ThyCa-QoL, Hashimoto’s patients had worse scores at baseline as compared to the control patients (20.8 vs 16.7, p=0.11) and there was a slight but clinically significant improvement from baseline to 1 year (decrease in mean of 1.18 pts, p=0.5). Analysis of the qualitative data showed that of the 10 patients who were on thyroid hormone pre-operatively, 9 described significant symptom improvement at 1 year, with fatigue being the major symptom that was reported as improved. Conclusion: Based on the data above, we see that patients with Hashimoto’s do have a higher symptom burden at baseline and thyroidectomy may play a role in symptom alleviation as well as improving mental health and QoL. Our data supports recent findings that thyroidectomy may play a role in alleviating thyroid related symptoms in this patient population and further investigation to better understand this phenomenon is warranted.

The quality of life (QoL) of patients with schizophrenia is impaired compared to the general population. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) on the quality of life of people with schizophrenia in selected Neuropsychiatric Hospitals in South-West Nigeria. A quasi-experimental research design was adopted in the study, 60 participants with schizophrenia were selected purposely, 30 participants to the intervention group and another 30 participants to the control group. Eight sessions of CBT were given to each participant in the intervention group. Data were collected with the use of the WHO Quality of life Bref questionnaire. Data collected were summarized using frequency, percentages, mean score, and standard deviation to answer research questions. The hypotheses were tested using the Mann-Whitney U Test and Wilcoxon Test at 0.05 level of significance. The outcome revealed that there was an overall post-intervention improvement in the Quality of life among the participants in the intervention group with a mean value of 3.63 ± 0.89, Z-value 3.72, p-value <0.001, unlike the control group with a mean value of 2.90 ± 0.85, Z-value= 1.77, p-value=0.08. CBT intervention with pharmacological management was effective in improving the quality of life in schizophrenic patients. CBT should be integrated into routine care given to schizophrenic clients in nursing interventions.

The survival of cancer patients is often short despite receiving therapy, but it really depends on various things including those that play an important role is the ability of patients to improve their life status in dealing with illnesses and therapy through increased self-efficacy because self-efficacy of cancer patients often experience reduction due to cancer and the therapy it undergoes. The pre–test and the first post -test and also the second post-test research design in the form of self-efficacy training of cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy used a quasi-experimental design without a control group. Data analysis used dependent t test and repeat ANOVA test. There were significant effects and differences in self-efficacy training on the quality of life of cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy with the p value dependent test was 0,000 and the repeat ANOVA test was p value 0,000. The uses of structured self-efficacy training be one of the considerations of nursing interventions to improve the quality of life of cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy.

AbstractWe conducted a case–control study to determine the effects of migraine on quality of life (QOL) in children. Participants, aged between 6 and 18 years, were assigned to migraine (n = 70) and control (n = 70) groups. We used a translated version of Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory 4.0 questionnaire. From the children's perspective, the overall QOL scores in all domains were lower in children with migraine. Children in the migraine group had significant lower scores in the social, emotional, and physical functioning (p-value < 0.05) than control group. Interestingly, a significant difference in the educational performance was not seen (p-value = 0.101). Relative to the parents' responses and children, the overall scores in all domains were lower in children with migraine. Statistically significant lower scores were found only in emotional and physical domains (p-value < 0.05). The results of this study indicate that migraine imposes a substantial negative impact on the different aspects of QOL in children.
