Ginger extract as an alternative to thrips (Thrips tabaci) control in hydroponic lettuce

Ginger has a large number of essential oils, zingiberene is the major substance found in it, which may be linked to the insecticidal activity of the plant. Therefore, it can be a viable alternative to replace the use of pesticides for pest control. The objective of this work was to evaluate the use of this ginger-based extract in hydroponic lettuce as an alternative to thrips control. The experiment was carried out in a randomized block design, with five treatments and four replications. The treatments used were the concentrations of 0 %, 20 %, 40 %, 60 %, and 80 % weight/volume of aqueous extract. After 45 days of sowing, the ginger plant extract was applied to the lettuce plants every seven days. A population of thrips was monitored using adhesive traps attached above each experimental plot once a week until harvest. In addition, fresh mass weight, shoot height, and incidence of direct damage to the crop were evaluated. Regarding thrips monitoring, no differences wereobserved indicating the uniformity of the population level among the lettuce parcels. For the evaluation of weight and fresh mass, no differences were observed regarding the treatments. However, from the concentration of 60 %, it was observed the lowest averages of plants with direct damage, showing that the higher the concentration of the solution the lesser insect feeding. Accordingly, the use of ginger plant extract in hydroponic lettuce becomes a promising alternative for reducing thrips feeding on lettuce.

ABSTRACT: Cultivars of the genus Nopalea are known in Brazil for being tolerant to cochineal carmine attacks, thus making the cultivation of this genus a promising alternative for mitigating the negative effects of this insect on the production of biomass. With the objectives of characterizing morphologically spineless forage cactus varieties and identify morphological characteristics that may be the focus in spineless forage cactus breeding programs, an experiment was conducted in a completely randomized block design with 11 treatments and four replications. The variety Alagoas showed the highest values of weight, area and volume of cladodes. The varieties Negro Michoacan F7 and V7, Tamazunchale V12 showed the highest values of the cladode area index, the total volume of cladodes and total fresh mass production. The varieties Negro Michoacan V7 and F7 presented the highest water use efficiency and dry mass yield. Cladode volume showed the highest correlation coefficients with the fresh weight of cladodes. Aiming the release of varieties for biomass production, varieties Negro Michoacan F7, V7 and Tamazunchale V12 may substitute the Miúda variety. The number and cladode area index may be used as criteria for selection of superior varieties in breeding programs.

ABSTRACT The use of humic substances and plant extract has been increasing mainly in organic crop systems without scientific-based recommendations. Research is necessary to evaluate the feasibility and the recommendations of these substances. The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of humic substances (humic and fulvic acids) applied by fertigation with and without saponin-based plant extracts on growth and yield of ‘BRS Princesa’ banana. The experiment was carried out using the banana cultivar ‘BRS Princesa’, at a spacing of 2.0 × 2.5 m, fertigated by drip irrigation in a Dystric Densic Xantic Ferralsol, at the Recôncavo da Bahia, Brazil. Treatments consisted of five doses of humic substances (0.0; 70; 105; 140, and 210 L ha-1cycle-1) applied with and without a saponin-based plant extract in a randomized block design in split-plot scheme. The following growth variables were evaluated: number of leaves, pseudostem height, pseudostem diameter, and length and width of the third leaf. The number of fruits/hand and hands/bunch, hand and bunch yield, and length and fruit diameter of the second central hand were evaluated during harvest. The doses of humic substances influenced only pseudostem height. Hand yield, as well as fruit length and diameter of ‘BRS Princesa’ banana were higher in plants fertigated with humic substance and plant extract in comparison with plants fertigated with only humic substance.

ABSTRACT The aim of this research is to control environmentally friendly soybean pod borer by utilizing plants in swamps as a vegetable insecticide, namely Kepayang (Pangiumedule). The study was conducted on tidal land in the Village of Kiri Dalam, Barambai District, Barito Kuala Regency, South Kalimantan Province. The study was designed in a randomized block design with 5 replications. The treatment is; 1. Kepayang leaf extract, 2. Without control, 3.Neem plant extract, 4. Chloriliprol insecticide. The results showed that the Kepayang leaf extract can be used as a botanical insecticide controlling soybean pod borer because it can suppress soybean pod attack by up to 62% and is no different from the Chloriliprol insecticide treatment by 64%. Effect Storage In Criopreservasi On Type And Old South Crioprotektan Different Conditions Of Seeds Against Growth of Mangosteen Seeds (Garcinia mangostana L). The aim of the study was to determine the type, duration of soaking and the different conditions of mangosteen seeds and their interaction with the growth of mangosteen seeds (Garcinia mangostana L). This research was carried out at the Laboratory of Applied Sciences in Seed Technology of Labuhanbatu College of Agricultural Sciences (STIPER), starting March to July 2018, using factorial randomized block design with 3 treatment factors namely cryoprotectant type, cryoprotectant immersion and mangosteen fruit flesh. Parameters observed were number of shoots (fruit), shoot height (cm), root length (cm), and sprout dry weight (g). The results showed that the highest application of the parameters was the use of non-fruit flesh with cryoprotectant PVS2 and 180 minutes soaking time. The results of the research were used to develop mangosteen seed storage for the needs of the community, especially mangosteen farmers in Indonesia.

The usage of herbal insecticide for leafminer control is based on the principle that organic compounds that are produced by plants to survive from the leafminer are selective, can be digested by the organism, and also can be broken down by heat, oxygen,  and sunshine. This study was to test the activity of  15 plant extracts to find out which kinds of plant extracts had insecticide activity to  Liriomyza Sativa. The study design was a randomized block design, with 17 treatments (15 kinds of plant extract and two controls), and was replicated five times. The trials were done at the glasshouse of Pest and Plant Disease Department of Agricultural Faculty at Udayana University. The results of the study showed that each plant extract that was used in this trial had different insecticide activity to  L  Sativa. The seed coat extract from the seed A. occidentale L. and the extract of P. retrofractum Vahl had the highest insecticide activity to L sativae.

ABSTRACTInduced systemic resistance in rice plant with plant extract to rice root-knot nematode (Meloidogyne graminicola Golden and Birchfiels)Rice is one of important crop that constantly infected by various pathogens. Root-knot nematodes (Meloidogyne graminicola) can decrease rice productivity in Southeast Asia. These nematodes have been reported in Indonesia. Currently nematode control is focused on biological control, application of organic and inorganic materials, natural nematicide, and induction of resistance. The study was conducted in the greenhouse Department of Plant Pest and Disease, Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Padjadjaran. The purpose of this study was to obtain an effective type of plant extract as an inducer of rice plant resistance to M. graminicola. The experiment used experimental method with Randomized Block Design consisting of 6 treatments and 4 replications. The treatment consists of application of plant leaf extract: kirinyuh (Chromolaena odorata), beluntas (Plucea indica), water hyacinth (Eichornia crassipes), spinach thorn (Amaranthus spinosus), control (without plant extract), and carbofuran. The experimental results showed that the extract of beluntas (P. indica) and spinach thorn (A. spinosus) can decrease the amount of gall on the roots of rice plants, and can suppress the amount of juvenile II M. graminicola in 100 ml of soil.Keywords: Induced systemic resistance, Meloidogyne graminicola, Plant extract, RiceABSTRAKTanaman padi merupakan tanaman serealia penting di dunia. Patogen tanaman seperti jamur, bakteri, virus, dan nematoda merupakan faktor pembatas pada budidaya tanaman padi. Nematodabengkak akar (Meloidogyne graminicola) dapat menurunkan produktivitas padi di Asia Tenggara, dan nematoda ini telah dilaporkan terdapat di Indonesia. Pengendalian nematoda parasit tanaman sangat sulit, umumnya menggunakan nematisida kimia yang berbahaya bagi manusia dan lingkungan. Saat ini pengendalian nematoda difokuskan pada pengendalian secara biologi, aplikasi bahan organik dan inorganik, nematisida alami, dan induksi resistensi. Penelitian ini dilakukan di rumah kaca Departemen Hama dan Penyakit Tumbuhan, Fakultas Pertanian Universitas Padjadjaran, Jatinangor. Tujuan penelitian adalah untuk memperoleh jenis ekstrak tumbuhan yang efektif sebagai bahan penginduksi ketahanan tanaman padi terhadap M. graminicola. Penelitian menggunakan metode percobaan dengan Rancangan Acak Kelompok terdiri dari 6 perlakuan dan 4 ulangan. Perlakuan terdiri dari kontrol (tanpa ekstrak tumbuhan), aplikasi ekstrak daun tumbuhan kirinyuh, beluntas, eceng gondok, bayam duri, dan karbofuran. fek ekstrak tumbuhan sebagai bahan penginduksi tanaman diuji terhadap jumlah gall pada akar, jumlah juvenile tingkat kedua (J2) M. graminicola dalam tanah, berat basah bagian atas tanaman, berat basah akar, dan tinggi tanaman padi. Hasil percobaan menunjukkan bahwa aplikasi ekstrak daun tanaman bayam duri dan beluntas dengan metode seed treatment (perendaman benih padi) dan soil drench (penyiraman pada tanah sekitar tanaman padi) dapat menurunkan jumlah gall pada akar padi dan tanaman padi resisten terhadap M. graminicola. Ekstrak daun bayam duri dan beluntas dapat menekan jumlah J2 M. graminicola dalam tanah dan meningkatkan berat basah akar dan tinggi tanaman padi.Kata Kunci: Ekstrak tumbuhan, Ketahanan sistemik terinduksi, Meloidogyne graminicola, Padi

To improve the quality of pepper products through organic cultivation using organic growth regulators. This Research aims to investigate concentration and long immersion effect of golden snail meat (Pomacea canaliculata L.) on the growth of pepper cuttings (Piper nigrum L.). the method was experimental with a randomized block design (RAK) Factorial design with two factors namely various golden snail meat concentrations and long immersion ranging from several hours. The parameters observed in this study was Growth Percentage (%), Bud Height (cm), Number of Leaves (Strands), Root Length (cm), and Root Volume (ml). The results showed that the treatment of snail meat zpt concentration did not significantly affect the shoot height parameters but significantly affected the percentage of growth, number of leaves, root length and root volume where the effective zpt concentration was 50%. The long immersion treatment significantly affected the percentage of growth and shoot height where the best treatment at w1 was 3 hours’ immersion. The treatment combination of ZPT golden snail meat (Pomacea canaliculata L.) and long immersion did not significantly affect all observations parameters.

ABSTRACT The long residual period of pre-emergent herbicides can interfere with successor crops, causing a phenomenon named carryover. This study evaluated the residual effect of imazapyr + imazapic herbicides on cotton crop grown in succession to soybean. The experiment was conducted between September 2016 and March 2017, in a randomized block design with 4 replicates, where the treatments were four doses of imazapyr + imazapic, 75, 150, 225 and 300 g a.i. ha-1, and the control. The analyzed variables were chlorophyll a fluorescence, shoot height, root length and volume, dry shoot mass and root dry mass. The data were submitted to analysis of variance and Tukey’s test, at p ≤ 0.05. The reduction in photosynthetic performance indexes for treatments of 150, 225 and 300 g a.i. ha-1 at 15 days after emergence (DAE) and of 75 g a.i ha-1 at 60 DAE indicated a photoinhibitory effect of these herbicides on plants. However, shoot height, length, volume and root dry mass were not affected in the treatments tested. Therefore, the persistence of the herbicide in the soil was not enough to characterize a carryover effect in cotton 135 days after application (DAA).

The water in semiarid regions contains salts in excess. When good quality water is not available it is necessary to use strategies that can make feasible the use of saline water. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of the application of the plant growth regulator on the culture of basil stressed with salt. The experiment was carried out in a randomized block design by the matrix “Central Box Compound”. Shoot height, stem diameter, leaf area, dry masses and soil chemical characteristics were evaluated. The salinity of the irrigation water causes reduction of the basil growth parameters, with the exception of the inflorescence dry mass. Plant growth regulator applications have effect on basil growth when plants are irrigated with saline water.

ABSTRACT Cut flowers are delicate products whose quality and longevity depends on growing and postharvest conditions. The aim of the study was to evaluate the anthochron and the postharvest of gladiolus stems produced under different growing seasons and irrigation levels. The experiments were carried out in a greenhouse in the State of Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) during the winter/spring 2018 and autumn/winter 2019 periods. A randomized block design with 5 replications was used, considering irrigation levels of 45%, 60%, 80% and 100% of the crop water requirement. Irrigation management was performed by the automatic irrigation controller, installed in the 100% irrigation level treatment. As they reached the harvest point, considered to be “showing the color” of the three basal florets, the floral stems were harvested, always in the morning, and immediately taken to the laboratory for standardization of size (75 cm). During the storage period, the stems were kept at a temperature of 25 ºC, with the base immersed in a container with 300 mL of water. Fresh mass, water absorption, anthochron and longevity evaluations were performed daily, in addition to a visual evaluation, performed using a proposed senescence scale. The occurrence of severe water deficit during cultivation interferes with the fresh mass of the stems in postharvest and increases the opening speed of the flowers. The floral stems’ longevity is reduced when gladiolus is produced under the 45% irrigation level. There are no significant differences in the longevity of flowers grown in the different seasons and the anthochron value is influenced by the water availability, being lower in the stems kept in field condition (0.70 to 0.80) in comparison to the postharvest condition (0.83 to 0.92).
