Present study was conducted through systematic survey of 18 villages in three districts (Kamrup, Nagaon and Darang) of Asom, India, using stratified random sampling technique. Total 52 Khutis (open herds) having 3310 buffaloes of different age and sex under farmers management, were purposively selected for utility and morphometrical studies of the breed and socio-economic status of the breeders in its home tract. The morphometrical traits, viz. Length of forehead ranged 23.81±0.70 to 48.42±0.94cm, neck length (22.91±0.66 to 39.82±1.02 cm), horn length (8.00±0.25 to 67.10±0.64 cm), space between two horns at base (9.14±0.24 to 18.52±0.64 cm) and tips (18.12±0.24 to 43.43±0.75 cm), tail length (44.60±0.45 to 80.60±0.85cm), and length of switch of the tail (8.09±0.20 to 15.89±0.20cm) were observed for the animals of both the sexes belonging to the age groups of up to 6 months, 6-12 m, 1-2 year, 2-3 years, 3-4 years and 4 years and above. The study shows that the animals are being utilized for milk only (82.69%) and milk and meat (17.31%). It was also found that 40.38% breeders are receiving an income ranges from Rs 50,000 to 75,000 and 28.85% breeders getting more in between 75,000 to 1,00,000 per year out of these animals, besides age, education level, land holding, family size and number of paid graziers were also studied. The Assamese buffalo breed is a very good source of livelihood for tribals, nomads and poor farmers, hence immediate steps should be taken to save this valuable breed in its natural habitat.

AbstractEvidence from literature shows that deviant behavior is on high side among undergraduates in Nigeria whereas some certain psychosocial factors causing this phenomenon have not been fully explored. This study examined whether age, gender, socio-economic status and attitude towards drug abuse determine deviant behavior among the undergraduate students. It adopted ex-post facto design. Simple random sampling technique was used to sample 269 participants. The Prescription Drug Attitudes Questionnaire (PDAQ) and Deviant Behavior Variety Scale (DBVS) were used to gather data from the participants. T-test analysis and multiple regression were used to test the formulated hypotheses. The results revealed that age, monthly allowance and attitude towards drug abuse have significant joint prediction of deviant behavior (R=.358 R2 =.128, F=10.594, p<.05) while only attitude towards drug abuse independently predicted deviant behavior (R=.236, R2 =.056 F = 17.112; p<.01). Also, there was a significant gender difference on deviant behavior [t (293) = 4.196, p<.01], where male respondents scored high significantly (M=4.09, SD=3.44) compared to female respondents (M=2.53, SD=2.31) on deviant behavior. It is therefore recommended that policy makers in educational sector and the governing council of tertiary institutions need to create awareness on the debilitating effects of drugs on students’ behavior, especially among males.

Abstract Background Socio-economic factors are considered as main determinants causing disparities in oral health across different countries. The aim of the present study was to investigate the associations of social and economic factors with dental caries experience among 6- and 12-year-old Iranian children. Methods In this cross-sectional study, a total of 31,146 students, aged 6 and 12 years old, were enrolled from all (31) provinces in Iran. Based on the standardized World Health Organization (WHO) criteria for oral health surveys, dental caries indices in primary and permanent teeth were assessed by clinical examination in schools. Data on socio-economic status was obtained from the modified WHO questionnaire and national data bank. The decayed, missing and filled teeth (dmft/DMFT) indices for primary and permanent dentition were compared at the individual and provincial levels using multilevel regression analysis. Poisson regression analysis was used to evaluate the association of social (demographic and behavioral) determinants with dental caries indices among individuals. To assess the causes of difference in dental caries indices across provinces, justifiable economic factors were also analyzed using poisson regression analysis. Results The mean (SE) of dmft and DMFT were 5.84 (0.05) and 1.84 (0.03), for 6-and 12-year-old children, respectively. The differences of dental caries indices were statistically significant among provinces. Higher level of parental education was negatively related to dental caries indices of both age groups. Rural residency was positively and dental flossing was reversely associated with dmft index of 6-year-old children. Negative associations were found between frequency of tooth brushing and preventive dental utilization with dmft and DMFT indices. Gross Domestic Product (GDP) index had negative and Consumer Price Index (CPI) had positive associations with dmft and DMFT indices in both age groups. However, positive relationships were observed between Gini index with DMFT index among 12-year-old children; as well as between the number of dentists per capita with dmft index among 6-year-old children. Conclusion Socio-demographic and behavioral factors were found to be associated with dental caries experience. However, economic indicators had the greatest importance.
