Maja (Crescentia cujete L) is a plant that has medicinal properties for various diseases. Leaves of Maja contain some compounds such which are thought to have the potential to be antibacterial. The purpose of this study was to determine the potential of maja leaf extract in cream dosage form and to prove the presence of Antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus. The cream of Maja leaf extract was made into several formulations; (5, 10, 15 %) The results was the cream of Maja leaf extract was able to inhibit the growth of S. aureus with the largest inhibition zone at a concentration of 15% with an average of 11.52 ± 0.95mm. Cream formulations were evaluated physically; organoleptic was resulting F1 in brownish-green, F2 in brown, and F3 in dark brown. Homogeneity tests show that all formulations were homogeneous. The pH value of all formulations following the cosmetic standard was about 4.5 – 6.5. The standard viscosity value was between 2000 – 4000 cps. The stability test of cream preparations shows no changes in the form of low-temperature storage (4ºC), room temperature, and high temperature (40ºC), so that maja leaf extracts can be formulated in cream preparations and cream formulations

The effects of low-temperature storage on the viability of Lactobacillus casei and the stability of antibacterial activity in green grass jelly synbiotic drinks. Biodiversitas 21: 3826-3831. Synbiotic drinks from green grass jelly have shown antibacterial activity against pathogenic bacteria. These are usually stored at low temperatures to maintain their characteristics. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of storage at low temperature of 10°C on the viability of lactic acid bacteria (Lactobacillus casei) and the stability of the antibacterial activity in synbiotic drinks made of green grass jelly. Antibacterial activity of green grass jelly synbiotic drink was conducted against pathogenic bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella sp., Bacillus cereus, and Escherichia coli). The products were stored for 28 days at 10°C temperature. Observations on the antibacterial activity, pH value, total acid, and total lactic acid bacteria were carried out every 7 days. Antibacterial activity was evaluated using agar well diffusion method. The results showed that storage at low temperature (10 ± 2°C) for 28 days decreased the antibacterial activity and pH value but sharply increased total lactic acid bacteria (at 0 to 7 days of storage) in green grass jelly synbiotic drinks. Salmonella sp. showed the highest inhibition caused by the antibacterial agents in green grass jelly synbiotic drinks while the lowest inhibition was found on Staphylococcus aureus. During storage at low temperature, green grass jelly synbiotic drinks had a total of lactic acid bacteria that ranged from 9.51 to 10.10 (Log CFU/mL) or equal to 3.24x109-1.26x1010 CFU/mL; a total of lactic acid that ranged from 0.48% to 0.87%; and pH values that ranged from 3.78 to 4.08.

Jatropha multifida L. contains alkaloids, tannins, flavonoids, saponins and phenolic acids that differ from each part of the plant and the content of these substances is what makes L. multifida Jatropha has a function as an antibacterial so that the leaf extract and the gap of chinese distance ( Jatropha multifida L.) allegedly capable of inhibiting the growth of Staphylococcus aureus bacteria. The aim of this research was to know the effectivity of leaf extract and gum of Jatropha multifida L. to the growth of Staphylococcus aureus bacteria in vitro.Penelitian used true experimental post test design. Using disc diffusion method with concentration 25; 50; 75; and 100% v / v leaf and gum china distance. Positive control was used Clindamycin 5μg drip antibiotic paper disc. The data were analyzed descriptively. The result of the research showed the difference of different inhibition zone between treatments. In chinese leaf extracts showed different mean diameters, at concentrations of 25%, 50%, 75% with inhibit zone formed respectively 0 mm, 9.32 mm, and 17.48 mm and the highest inhibition zone at concentration of 100% with an average diameter of 22.24 mm. In the gap of chinese distance showed a different mean diameter, at concentrations of 25%, 50%, 75% with the inhibit zone formed respectively 16.08 mm, 18.15 mm, and 18.63 mm and the highest inhibition zone at a concentration of 100% with an average diameter of 21.91 mm. Clindamycin positive controls show an average inhibit zone of 23.31 mm. It was concluded that there was an effect of leaf extract and resin of chinese distance plant (Jatropha multifida L.) on growth of Staphylococcus aureus bacteria, and the best concentration was 100% concentration and almost closer to the inhibitory zone of Clindamycin antibiotics as positive control.

Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) is a round-shaped Gram-positive bacteria that caused infection in the human body. S. aureus infection can be inhibited by the use of antibiotics. However, these bacteria displayed resistance to some antibiotics. The purpose of this study is to determine the effects of Tembelekan (Lantana camara L.) and Kopasanda (Chromolaena odorata L.) leaf extracts against S. aureus. The method used in this study is the disc method to determine the inhibition zone. The test results showed there was no significant difference in the sensitivity of Tembelekan leaf extract (L. camara L.) and Kopasanda leaf extract (C. odorata L.) against S. aureus (P0.8>α0.05). However, based on the average value of the inhibition zone, Kopasanda leaf extract was showed higher inhibition zone compared to Tembelekan leaf extract. In conclusion, Tembelekan leaf and Kopasanda leaf at a concentration of 100% were produced inhibition zones of 0.6 cm and 0.8 cm respectively against S. aureus.

A study was carried out to screen for phytochemical constituents and assess the antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of Senna alata and Senna tora leaf extracts. The leaves were first dried at room temperature and 50°C in an oven prior to solvent extraction using ethanol and methanol. The in-vitro qualitative assays showed that both S. alata and S. tora leaf extracts contained bioactive and secondary metabolites components such as tannins, steroids, saponin, terpenoids, glycosides, flavonoids and phenols. The antioxidant activity and capacity test were carried out by conducting free radical of 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) scavenging activity and Ferric reduction antioxidant plasma (FRAP) assays. Both assays showed S. tora leaf extract has higher antioxidant capacity than S. alata leaf extract. The efficacy of these leaf extracts were tested against skin pathogens through agar well diffusion method. S. alata extract showed an inhibition zone (1.15 – 1.59 mm) against Pseudomonas aeruginosa while S. tora extracts exhibited a strong antimicrobial activity against S. epidermidis (inhibition zone of 12 – 16.94 mm) followed by P. aeruginosa (inhibition zone of 1 – 1.59 mm). Nonetheless, no inhibition zone was observed for S. aureus by both leaf extracts. The phytochemicals and antioxidant constituents as well as inhibitory potential on skin pathogens possessed by S. alata and S. tora leave highlighted their potential utilization in the development of natural drugs or cosmetics to treat skin related diseases or infections.

The use of antimicrobials from plant extracts has not been used optimally to control pathogenic agents in dragon fruit plants. The purpose of this research was to determine the antimicrobial activity of zodia (Evodia suaveolens) leaf extracts on pathogenic agents of dragon fruit plants in vitro. The research method is laboratory research with Completely Randomized Design (CRD). The antimicrobial concentrations of zodia (E. suaveolens) leaf extract used six types including 50%, 60%, 70%, 80%, 90%, and 100% with four replications. The research sample was the leaf of zodia (E. suaveolens), Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Fusarium oxysporum strain Malang. Test the antimicrobial activity of zodia (E. suaveolens) leaf extracts on the growth of P. aeruginosa and F. oxysporum using the disc-diffusion method and wells method. The research instrument was used the observation sheet of the diameter of inhibition zone indicated by the clear zone. The diameter of inhibition zone data were analyzed using the One Way ANOVA test. The results showed that the antimicrobial activity of zodia (E. suaveolens) leaf extract significantly inhibited the growth of P. aeruginosa and F. oxysporum (P <0.05). These results recommend zodia (E. suaveolens) leaf extract as an antimicrobial agent for dragon fruit plant pathogens.

Introduction: Endodontic treatment failure can be caused by the bacterium E. faecalis, which has a prevalence of up to 90%. E. faecalis is difficult to eradicate because it forms a biofilm to defend itself against antibacterial agents. Lime leaves are one of the many herbal products available in Indonesia (Citrus hystrix DC). Lime leaf extracts include antibacterial components such as essential oils, phenolics, alkaloids, saponins, and tannins. The purpose of this study was to investigate the antibacterial activity of lime leaf extract against E. faecalis bacterium. Material and Methods:The agar diffusion technique was used for four experimental groups, using lime leaf extract at 4% (group 1), 8% (group 2), and 16% (group 3) as the negative control. Each group was repeated six times on Muller Hinton Agar (MHA) medium with a paper disc, and the diameter of the inhibitory zone was measured with a caliper. Results and Discussions: The results revealed that a 4 % concentration of lime leaf extract had an average inhibition zone diameter of 7.31 mm, an 8 % concentration had an average inhibition zone diameter of 8.59 mm, and a 16 % concentration had an average inhibition zone diameter of 11.41 mm. The difference in the inhibition zone was statistically significant (p= 0,000) evaluated using the one-way ANOVA. Conclusion: It can be concluded that lime leaf extract is antibacterial potential against E. faecalis bacteria in the endodontic treatment.

1. Silver nitrate or sodium merthiolate can be used for the sterilization of suspensions of B. typhosus and neither have any immediate destructive effect on the Vi, O or H antigens.2. Two methods of employing silver nitrate as a sterilizing agent are described.3. Physiological saline solution with silver nitrate added is bactericidal for B. typhosus and the staphylococcus but has no inhibitory action on the growth of moulds.4. Vaccines sterilized and preserved with silver nitrate after storage for 6 months at 7° C. were found to have retained their Vi antibody stimulating properties.5. A vaccine sterilized and preserved with “katadyn” after storage for 18 months at 7° C. still contained some Vi antigen and was superior as an immunogenic agent to a freshly prepared heat-killed-phenolized vaccine.6. It would appear that the stability of Vi antigen is increased by the addition of silver within certain limits, but this effect is only obtained if low temperature storage conditions are maintained.7. A vaccine sterilized and preserved with sodium merthiolate after 6 months' storage at 7°C. failed to stimulate any Vi antibody in the rabbit.

Abstract: Currently, oral health requires comprehensive handling by dentists and other health professionals. Osteomyelitis is an infection that occurs in bone tissue and bone marrow of the jaw and/or cortical bones, predominantly caused by Staphylococcus aureus. Medicinal plants in Indonesia have been widely used as traditional medicine inter alia stevia (Stevia rebaudiana Bertoni M.). This stevia plant has components that are typical natural sweetener and stevioside which has the characteristics as antibacterial, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antifungal, and other active substances including tannins, alkaloids, flavonoids, and phenol. This was an experimental laboratory study with the post test only group design. Subjects were Staphylococcus aureus bacteria. The results showed that stevia leaf extract had inhibition zone to Staphylococcus aureus growth of 10.32 mm which was categorized as strong according to Davis and Stout 1971. Conclusion: Stevia leaf extract (Stevia rebaudiana Berrtoni M.) had strong inhibition to Staphylococcus aureus.Keywords: osteomyelitis, stevia (Stevia rebaudiana Bertoni M.), Staphylococcus aureusAbstrak: Dewasa ini kesehatan gigi dan mulut memerlukan penanganan secara komperhensif oleh dokter gigi maupun tenaga kesehatan lainnya. Salah satu penyakit yang sering dijumpai yaitu osteomielitis pada jaringan tulang dan sum-sum tulang rahang dan/atau korteks tulang dengan penyebab utama ialah bakteri Staphylococcus aureus. Tanaman herbal di Indonesia telah banyak digunakan sebagai obat tradisional; salah satunya ialah tanaman stevia (Stevia rebaudiana Bertoni M.). Tanaman stevia memiliki komponen yang bersifat pemanis alami, stevioside yang berefek antibakteri, antivirus, antiinflamasi, antifungsi, dan antimikroba, serta zat aktif di antaranya ialah tannin, alkaloid, flavonoid, dan fenol. Jenis penelitian ini ialah eksperimental laboratorik dengan post test only group design. Subyek penelitian ialah bakteri Staphylococcus aureus. Hasil penelitian memperlihatkan bahwa ekstrak daun stevia (Stevia rebaudiana Bertoni M.) mempunyai rerata zona hambat terhadap pertumbuhan bakteri Staphylococcus aureus sebesar 10,32 mm yang tergolong kuat menurut Davis dan Stout 1971. Simpulan: Ekstrak daun stevia (Stevia rebaudiana Berrtoni M.) memiliki daya hambat yang kuat terhadap bakteri Staphylococcus aureus.Kata kunci: osteomielitis, stevia (Stevia rebaudiana Bertoni M.), Staphylococcus aureus

BACKGROUND Azadirachta indica, commonly known as neem, neem tree or Indian lilac, Limbo, Nim, Nimba, Medusa and Vempu. It is typically grown in tropical and subtropical regions. Neem belongs to family meliaceae. Neem is a native tree of India. It is also called “village pharmacy of south Asia” (India) because of its enormous medicinal properties and people use it most of the time without knowing its multiple advantages. This study was done to know the efficacy of medicinal plant named Azadirachta indica (Neem) against pathogenic microorganisms and about its utility as disinfectant and floor cleaner. METHODS Agar well diffusion method, Culture plate method, inoculum preparation & its subculture methods were used to determine the antimicrobial activity of the neem leaf extract. Different concentrations of neem leaf extracts in culture plates were used for the study. In this method inhibited zones were measured. RESULTS Neem leaf extracts showed considerable antimicrobial activity against four target pathogens. In agar well diffusion method it showed maximum antimicrobial activity against Enterococcus and Staphylococcus aureus. Growth of inhibition was increased as the concentration of the neem extract in agar media increased and was maximum for Staphylococcus aureus. CONCLUSIONS The extract of A. indica, has antimicrobial activity against target pathogens Enterococcus, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas, and E.coli. With the old medicinal knowledge on neem, better economic and therapeutic utilization can be done by using modern approaches of drug development. This research aimed to know the shelf life of mullet fillet with basil leaves extract treatment in different concentration based on the amount of bacteria contained on mullet fillet during low temperature storage. The research was conducted at The Central Laboratory and The Laboratory of Fishery Product Processing, Padjadjaran University, Jatinangor. The method used in this research was experimental with four treatments by duplo. Basil leaves extract treatment concentrations were given in 0%, 1.5%, 3% and 4.5% concentrations, soaked for 30 minutes and stored at low temperature (5-10℃). The observations for grey mullet fillet with 0% concentration (without soaking on basil leaf extract treatment) were made on the 1st, 3td, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th day of research. The observations for 1.5%, 3% and 4.5 concentrations were made on the 1st, 3rd, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th day of storage period. The parameters observed in this research was the amount of bacteria. The result of research showed that the use of basil leaf extract in concentration of 3% on mullet fillet during low temperature storage has the longest shelf life, that was until 11 days with total amount of bacteria about 4.55 x  cfu/g.
