  Shigella dysenteriae is bacteria that caused diarrhea with high morbidity and mortality. Resistance and toxicity has reported in some antibiotics therapy towards S. dysentriae. Therefore, alternative therapy based on herbal plants is needed. Chymbopogon citratus oil can be used as an antibacterial to Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Streptococcus mutans, all strains Staphlylococcus sp, Bacillus cereus and Bacillus subtilis. This study aimed to investigate antibacterial activity of C. citratus oils on the growth of S. dysentriae and its minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC). This type of research was a quasi experimental. Antibacterial activity test performed by diffusion method. Subjects in this study were S. dysentriae. C. citratus oil concentration used were 15 μl/ml, 20 μl/ml, 25 μl/ml, 30 μl/ml, 35 μl/ml and 40 μl/ml. Positive control group was given ciprofloxacin 5 μl/ml and a negative control group was given tween-80. Inhibition zone was observed at a concentration of 25 µl/ml (P3). The MIC of C. citratus oils againts S. dysentriae was at a concentration of 25 µl/ml. Kruskal Wallis analysis showed that p=0.000 and α=0.05, it was revealed that there were differences between antibacterial activity amoung tested group with different concentration. Introduction: Staphylococcus aureus infection can cause pyoderma. These days there is a shift in Staphylococcus aureus sensitivity to antibiotics that is marked by the existence of Methicillin-Resistant Staphyloccus aureus, so alternative therapy that is herbal medicine might be needed. There are a lot of medicinal plants in Indonesia, but until today the usage is still minimum. One of the plant genus that is already being used is allium that had been known to have antimicrobial activity. The genus allium that is consumed a lot by Indonesians especially people of North Sumatra is bawang batak (Allium chinense G.Don.). This study is conducted to assess the antimicrobial activity of bawang batak bulbs in several concentrations to MRSA. Methods: This research is an experimental research with agar diffusion method. The extracts were divided into six groups: extracts in concentration level of 6.25%, 12.5%, 25%, 50%, 100% and a negative control (DMSO). The sample size is four per group with total sample of 24. Results: The results showed that the inhibition of bacterial growth occured at the concentration levels of 50% and 100% with inhibition zone diameters of 8.695 mm and 10.545 mm respectively. Extracts with concentration levels of 25%, 12.5% and 6.25% did not show any inhibition. Conclusion: Bawang batak bulbs extract can be used to inhibit the growth of MRSA

Abstract: Akar kuning (Fibraurea tinctoria Lour.), an original plant from Kalimantan, is often used by the community as traditional medicine. Previous studies showed that akar kuning contains active compounds such as alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, and terpenoids that have antibacterial properties. This study aims to analyze the difference in antibacterial potency of the infusion of akar kuning against the growth of Shigella dysenteriae (S. dysenteriae) and Salmonella typhi (S. typhi) in vitro. This was a true experimental study with a post-test method only with control group design using the infusion of akar kuning with concentrations of 16%, 32%, and 64%, 5 µg ciprofloxacin as the positive control and aquadest as the negative control. The data were analyzed using the One-Way ANOVA test, LSD’s Post-hoc test, and independent T test with a 95% of confidence level. This study showed that the higher the concentration of the infusion of akar kuning, the larger the inhibition zone of the infusion at the concentration of 64% had a larger inhibition zone for S. typhi (16,32 mm) than S. dysenteriae (15,59 mm). However, there was no statistical difference in antibacterial potency of  the infusion of akar kuning against S. dysenteriae and S. typhi.  Keywords: antibacterial potential, infusion, akar kuning, Fibraurea tinctoria Lour., Shigella dysenteriae, Salmonella typhi

Background:Infectious diseases are the main cause of high morbidity and mortality rates, especially in developing countries such as Indonesia.Indonesia is abundant with plants that can be used as herbal medicine. Garlic is known as having antibacterial elements, one of them is for Staphylococcus epidermidis  which is one cause of dermal disease. This disease is often ignored in Indonesia because the price of the drug is not affordable by the community. So that garlic should be used as an alternative medicineObjective: This study aims to determine the antibacterial effect of garlic extract (Allium sativum L.) retarding the growth of Staphylococcus epidermidis.Methods: This study is experimental laboratory using plate diffusion method of "Postest Ony Control Group Design" design. There are 7 groups, 5 treatment groups and 2 control groups. The concentration of treatment group was 100%, 50%, 25%, 12,5%, 6,25% while for positive control using chloramphenicol and aquadest as negative control. The bacteria used were Staphylococcus epidermidis.Results: The results showed that garlic extract (Allium sativum L.) had an antibacterial effect in inhibiting the growth of Staphylococcus epidermidis. The inhibitory zone concentration in the statistical results shows there are significant differences with values p = 0.000 or p <α.Conclusion: The conclusion of the study showed that Garlic Extract (Allium sativum L.) had an antibacterial effect to retarding the growth of Staphylococcus epidermidis..Keywords: Staphylococcus epidermidis, garlic, antibacteria

<p><strong>ABSTRACT</strong></p><p><strong>Background</strong>; In Indonesia, most diarrhea disease in 1995 to 2001 are caused by Shigella spp. Shigella spp infection can cause various symptom dan complication. Generally, the treatment by using antibiotic can cause antibiotic resistance. Sea cucumber (Holoturia scabra) is an herb that known, available, and easy to consume by society and has an antibacterial effect. Therefore, further research to study the effect of Holoturia Scabra on <em>Shigella Dysentriae</em> growth in vitro is needed.</p><p><strong>Objectives</strong>: The goal of this research is demonstrate the effect of sea cucumber (Holoturia scabra) to the growth of the <em>Shigella dysentriae</em> bacteria in vitro.</p><p><strong>Method</strong>: The method in this research is Posttest Only Control Group. There are 6 groups, 4 types of and 2 control groups. The concentration of the treatment group is 100%,50%, 25%, and, 12.5% while for positive control tests using chloramphenicol and aquadest as a negative control.</p><p><strong>Result</strong>: The result showed there is an influence on the intake of sand cucumber to the growth of the Shigella dysenteriae.</p><p><strong>Conclusion</strong>: Sea cucumber (<em>Holoturia scabra</em>) inhibit the growth of <em>Shigella dysenteriae</em>.</p><p><strong>Key words</strong>: <em>Shigella dysenteriae</em>, sea cucumber (<em>Holoturia scabra</em>), antibacterial</p>

ABSTRACT Background : Gastrointestinal infections, especially caused by Shigella dysenteriae bacteria is still a health issue in Indonesia. The number of ampicillin resistance to S. dysenteriae has been widely reported. Garlic (Allium sativum) is a traditional medicine that efficacy as an antibacterial. Garlic contains an organosulfur compound  Allicin. Research Purpose: This study aimed to determine the antibacterial activity of garlic rule extract on the growth of S. dysenteriae bacteria that are resistant to ampicillin. Research Methods: This study used the experimental with post test only control group design. The antibacterial activity test was determined based on the diameter of clear zone formed. Test  were performed  on garlic filtrate, ciprofloxacin as a positive control and aquades as a negative control. Each treatment was performed three times. Research Result: This research showed that rule extract of garlic (A. sativum)  had a clear zone against S. dysenteriae that was resistant to ampicillin. Conclusion: The conclusion of this research was that rule extract of garlic (A. sativum) had an antibacterial activity against S. dysenteriae which resistant to ampicillin.  Keywords : Antibacterial activity, Garlic (A. sativum), S. dysenteriae

Streptococcus pyogenes is one of the pathogenic bacteria that causes pharyngitis. Natural treatment to overcome these problems is to use cardamom seeds. The purpose of this study was to test the antibacterial activity, determine the concentration of inhibitory zone and phytochemical compounds from  ethanol 96% extract of Java cardamom seeds (Amomum compactum Soland. Ex Maton) against Streptococcus pyogenes. The method is used   solid dilution and paper disc diffusion method. The solid dilution method is used for the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) test with a concentration of 1.25%, 2.5%, 5% and 7.5% while the paper diffusion method is used for the Inhibition zone Diameter (IZD)  using five treatments namely three concentrations of ethanol 96% extract of Java cardamom seeds (7.5%, 10% and 12%), one positive control of amoxicillin 0.01 mg/mL and one negative control of sterile distilled water. IZD data were  analyzed using ANOVA with a confidence level of 95% and α = 0.05 and Duncan's further tests to determine differences between treatments. The results showed that the MIC  was at a concentration of 7.5% while for the IZD test which had the highest activity there was a concentration of 12% with an average inhibition diameter of 12.03 ± 0.14 mm. In addition, ethanol 96% extract of Java cardamom seeds contain alkaloids, flavonoids, terpenoids and tannins which function in antibacterial activity.

Noni juice can inhibit the growth of Escherichia coli bacteria. Noni juice extraction needs concentration to extract so that the preparation is more stable in the storage process. The purpose of this study was to determine the antibacterial activity and the amount of the minimum inhibitory concentration of noni juice extract from E. coli bacteria in vitro. This type of experimental research with a completely randomized one-way design. The extract was obtained by concentrating the Noni leaf extract. Extract quality control parameters include organoleptic, yield, drying shrinkage, and qualitative tests of flavonoid and anthraquinone compounds. Antibacterial activity test using the disc diffusion method with an extract concentration of 1.56%; 3.12%; 6.25%; 12.5%; and 25% with 3 replications. Positive control of amoxicillin and negative control of distilled water. Inhibition is known from the zone formed around the paper disc. The data obtained were statistically analyzed using Kruskall Wallis followed by Mann Whitney with a 95% confidence level. The results showed that the variation in the concentration of the noni juice extract had a significant effect (p <0.05). The biggest inhibitory zone was seen at 25% concentration of 10.16 mm and included in the strong category. The minimum inhibitory power was produced at a concentration of 3.12% at 2.50 mm with a weak treatment category.

Previous in vitro studies showed that nanoparticle extract of turmeric, zedoary, and garlic exhibit antibacterial activity against Mycoplasma gallisepticum (M. gallisepticum) which causes chronic respiratory disease (CRD) in chicken. This research aimed to determine the antibacterial activity of nanoparticles of Curcuma longa, Curcuma zedoaria, and Allium sativum extract to CRD infected chicken. In vivo test of antibacterial activity of turmeric, zedoary, and garlic nanoparticle in combination was conducted on chicken infected by M. gallisepticum and Escherichia coli (E.coli). Antibiotic control used was enrofloxacin. As many as 75 chickens were divided into 5 groups containing 15 chickens each. Group one consisted of healthy chickens (positive control); group two consisted of chickens that have been inoculated by bacteria (negative control); group three (treatment) were chickens inoculated by bacterium and given extract nanoparticle combination on day 7 of infection for 7 days; group four (prevention) were chickens inoculated by bacterium and given combination of extract nanoparticles on day 5 before infection for 14 days; group five were chickens inoculated with bacterium and given enrofloxacin antibiotics for 7 days. In vivo research results showed increased body weight and performance indicated by improvements in clinical signs, and gross pathology changes. The combination of three extract nanoparticles showed the best activity in controlling CRD in chicken, both as preventive and curative means.

Aims & Methods: The present study was undertaken to compare the antibacterial activity of a cephradine derivative with that of the parent antibiotic cephradine. Cephradine was converted to its benzoyl derivative by Schotten-Baumann method for the first time. Disc diffusion method was employed to find out the antibacterial activity against EPEC, ETEC, E. Agg, Salmonella typhi, Salmonella group B, Shigella boydii, Shigella dysenteriae 1, Shigella dysenteriae 2, Shigella flexinariae and Shigella sonnei. Melting point, TLC, HPLC, UV, FTIR and <sup>1</sup>H NMR studies were carried out to check the purity and confirm that the derivative was cephradine benzoate. Results: The benzoyl derivative showed promising activity against tested bacteria. The results obtained from the study demonstrate that the benzoyl derivative could be a potential antibacterial agent. Kematian akibat infeksi Shigella, terutama Shigella dysenteriae dapat mencapai lebih dari 10% terutama pada anak dan lanjut usia pada kondisi tanpa pemberian terapi yang efektif. Siprofloksasin merupakan lini pertama untuk pengobatan infeksi Shigella, akan tetapi obat ini memiliki beberapa kekurangan di antaranya harga yang mahal dan resistensi. Daun mengkudu merupakan tanaman tradisional yang diduga memiliki efek antimikro dan diharapkan dapat menjadi alternatif terapi antibiotik bagi Shigella dysenteriae yang saat ini sudah banyak mengalami resistensi. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah mengetahui efek antimikro ekstrak air daun mengkudu (Morinda citrifolia L.) terhadap bakteri Shigella dysenteriae. Penelitian ini bersifat eksperimental laboratorium murni. Zona hambat ditentukan melalui metode difusi cakram. Objek penelitian yang digunakan adalah Shigella dysenteriae ATCC nomor 13313. Sampel uji berupa ekstrak air daun mengkudu konsentrasi 100%, kontrol positif (siprofloksasin) dan kontrol negatif (aquadest) dengan 9 kali pengulangan. Hasil uji antimikro dengan metode difusi cakram menunjukkan tidak terbentuk zona hambat pada ekstrak air daun mengkudu konsentrasi 100%. Hal tersebut menunjukkan ekstrak air daun mengkudu konsentrasi 100% tidak memiliki efek antimikro terhadap bakteri Shigella dysenteriae. Kadar flavonoid, tanin, dan alkaloid yang terdapat dalam ekstrak air daun mengkudu konsentrasi 100% pada penelitian ini kemungkinan belum cukup untuk menghasilkan efek yang diharapkan. Antimicrobial Effect of Water Extract of Noni (Morinda citrifolia L.) Leaves against Shigella dysenteriae In VitroDeath due to infection with Shigella, especially Shigella dysenteriae, can reach more than 10%, especially in children and the elderly in conditions without effective therapy. Ciprofloxacin is the first line for the treatment of Shigella infection, however this drug has several disadvantages including high price and resistance. Noni leaf is a traditional plant that is thought to have antimicrobial effects and is expected to be an alternative antibiotic therapy for Shigella dysenteriae which is currently experiencing a lot of resistance. The purpose of this study was to determine the antimicrobial effect of the water extract of noni leaves (Morinda citrifolia L.) on Shigella dysenteriae bacteria. This research is a pure laboratory experimental study. The zone of inhibition is determined by the disc diffusion method. The research object used was Shigella dysenteriae ATCC number 13313. The test sample was a water extract of noni leaves with a concentration of 100%, positive control (ciprofloxacin) and negative control (aquadest) with 9 repetitions. The results of the antimicrobial test using the disc diffusion method showed no inhibition zone was formed in the water extract of noni leaves with a concentration of 100%. This shows that a water extract of noni leaves with a concentration of 100% did not have an antimicrobial effect against the Shigella dysenteriae bacteria. The levels of flavonoids, tannins, and alkaloids contained in the water extract of noni leaves with a concentration of 100%  in this study may not be sufficient to produce the expected effect.
