Sorghum is the first cereal grown in Burkina Faso. It is produced in all regions of the country, however yields in the field are very low. In view of this low productivity, new hybrid varieties have been introduced from Brazil and Mali. Our study aims to evaluate their agro morphological and nutritional characteristics in order to disseminate the most efficient genotypes. A completely randomized block device with three (03) repetitions has been set up at the Farako-Bâ research station. Observations focused on five (05) agro morphological traits such as the semi-flowering cycle, plant height, panicle length, weight of a thousand grains and yield and six (06) biochemical traits including total water, total sugar, protein, fat and mineral content. Analysis of variance and heritability in the broad sense were performed. Our results showed both agro morphological and biochemical variability between the varieties evaluated. Heritability in the broad sense has also shown that all traits studied are under the influence of genetic rather than environmental factors. In general, hybrids obtained semi-dwarf sizes and yields above 4000 kg/ha. The control variety KAPELGA recorded the highest values of protein and mineral content. The highest sugar content is obtained in the hybrid XBS60015 with 17.82 μg Glu/100mgMS. Correlation analyses have shown that there is a negative and very highly significant correlation (-0.86) between yield and protein content. The most efficient hybrids will be able to be disseminated following participatory selection tests on different sites nationwide.

The watermelon (Citrullus lanatus, THUNB. Matsum & Nakai.) is an important and valuable vegetable crop that has the 3rd largest cultivated area in open field in Hungary. Our experiment was set up in the largest and most intensive melon growing area in Hungary, at Dombegyháza in Békés County. Our investigations were carried out with the Grizzly watermelon variety and during the experiment 5 different colors of plastic mulch (purple, transparent, green, black, and butter coloured) were used, the control was uncovered. In the field we measured the average weight of the fruits, and during our laboratory measurements we examined the following nutritional characteristics: invert and reducing sugar content, refraction and acidity. Based on the results of the two years of our study we can state that the different color of the plastic mulch did not show significant differences in the examined quantitative and qualitative parameters. Using plastic mulch soil covering between the rows in the watermelon production is likely to continue due to the fact that the fruits remain clean, between the rows the soil remains weed-free, and the problem of labor shortage can be solved with this technology.

The experiment was set up on two types of the soil: Mollic Gleysols (FAO, 1998) and Eutric Cambisols where the presence of pathogenic fungi – sugar beet root decay agent – Rhizoctonia solani has been detected since 2005. In a two year study (2008, 2009), the experiment was set up by completely randomized block design in 4 repetitions and 16 different variants. Two beet varieties, Belinda, sensitive to pathogenic fungi R. solani, and Laetitia, tolerant to pathogenic fungi R. solani), were grown. The microbiological preparation BactoFil was applied in different amounts in autumn and spring. In addition, the nitrogen fertilizer application, based on the results of soil analysis, was varied. The following parameters were tested: amount of infected and decayed plants, root yield, sugar content, sugar in molasses and sugar yield. The best results were obtained by applying the microbiological preparation BactoFil, and by 30% reduced nitrogen fertilizer application. Preparation dosage and time of application depended on soil properties.

Yam (Dioscorea spp.) is a valuable food security crop in West Africa, where 92% of the world production occurs. The availability of quality seed tubers for increased productivity is a major challenge. In this study, minitubers weighing 1, 3, and 5 g produced from virus-free single-node vine cuttings of two improved yam varieties (Asiedu and Kpamyo) growing in an aeroponics system were assessed for suitability in seed production at a population of 100,000 plants ha−1. A 3 × 2 factorial experiment with randomized complete block design and three replications was set up during the cropping seasons of 2017 to 2019 at the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture Research Station in Kubwa, Abuja, Nigeria. Results showed field establishments of 87%–97.8%. Yields differed with minituber size, variety, and cropping season; the highest was 31.2 t ha−1 in 2019 and the lowest, 10 t ha−1 in 2018 from 5 and 1 g Kpamyo minitubers, respectively. The estimated number of tubers produced per hectare by 1, 3, and 5 g minitubers was 101,296, 112,592, and 130,555, with mean weights per stand of 159.2, 187.3, and 249.4 g, respectively. We recommend using less than 6 g minitubers for seed yam production due to their high multiplication rates.

Hemp flour from Dacia Secuieni and Zenit varieties was added to bread in different proportions (5%, 10%, 15% and 20%) to improve its nutritional properties. The purpose of this paper was to present the advanced nutritional characteristics of these bread samples. The selected varieties of hemp, accepted for human consumption, met the requirements for the maximum accepted level of THC in seeds. The protein content of new products increased from 8.76 to 11.48%, lipids increased from 0.59 to 5.41%, mineral content from 1.33 to 1.62%, and fiber content from 1.17 to 5.84%. Elasticity and porosity decreased from 95.51 to 80% and 78.65 to 72.24%, respectively. K, Mg, Ca, P, Mn and Fe are the main mineral substances in bread with addition of hemp flour from the Dacia Secuieni and Zenit varieties. The total amount of unsaturated fatty acids in the bread samples with hemp flour ranged from 67.93 g/100 g and 69.82 g/100 g. Eight amino acids were identified, of which three were essential (lysine, phenylalanine, histidine). Lysine, the deficient amino acid in wheat bread, increased from 0.003 to 0.101 g/100 g. Sucrose and fructose decreased with the addition of hemp flour, and glucose has not been identified. The amount of yeasts and molds decreased in the first 3 days of storage. Regarding the textural profile, the best results were obtained for the samples with 5% addition. In conclusion, bread with the addition of hemp flour has been shown to have superior nutritional properties to wheat bread.

Abstract Mango (Mangifera indica L.) can be characterized as a greatly accepted fruit due to its sensory attributes of flavor and aroma. However, it has a large production during the harvest season and requires preservation through processing. Osmotic pretreatment, followed by drying, provides products with higher quality and stability. The present study explored the effects of osmotic pretreatment with and without addition of calcium chloride in the nutritional characteristics and sensorial acceptance of dehydrated mango. Four different osmotic treatments were applied in mango slices followed by drying. Drying without osmotic treatment was considered control. Dried samples pre-treated with calcium had lower sugar content and higher retention of acids in the fruit. The increase of sucrose and glucose content during osmotic treatment contributed to maintaining nutritional quality and color of the product when compared with control treatment. Products dehydrated with osmotic pre-treatment were the most preferred, presenting higher purchase intention. The combination of osmotic pretreatment with convective drying provided higher acceptance of dehydrated mango due to its higher quality.

Labile pools of soil organic matter (SOM), including soil sugars, are important to the formation and stabilization of soil aggregates and to microbial activity and nutrient cycling. The effects of cropping systems at farm level in tropical areas on SOM labile pool dynamics have not been adequately studied and the results are sparse and inconsistent. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of soil management intensity on soil sugar monomers derived from plant debris or microbial activity in cotton (Gossypium herbaceum)-based cropping systems of western Burkina Faso. Thirty-three (33) plots were sampled at 0-15 cm soil depth considering field-fallow successions and tillage intensity. Two pentose (arabinose, xylose) and four hexose (glucose, galactose, mannose, glucosamine) monomers accounted for 2 to 18% of soil organic carbon (SOC) content. Total sugar content was significantly less with tillage, especially for the hexose monomeric sugars glucose and mannose, the latter of microbial origin. Soil mannose was 63 and 80% less after 10 years of cultivation, without and with annual ploughing respectively, compared with fallow conditions. Soil monosaccharide content was rapidly restored with fallow and soon approached the equilibrium level observed under old fallow lands. Therefore, the soil monosaccharides, in particular galactose and mannose from microbial synthesis are early indicators of changes in SOC.

The experiment was conducted at Horticultural Research Station, Mondouri, BCKV during 2015-2017 to find out the effect of mulching and supplementary irrigation on physical and chemical properties i.e fruit weight, length, diameter, pulp percentage, TSS, acidity, vitamin-C, anthocyanin etc. of Bael (Aegle marmelos Correa.) The experiment was put on factorial RBD consist of nine treatments viz.  M0I0 -  No mulch + no irrigation (Control). M0I1 - No mulch + basin irrigation with 15 litres/plant at 10 days interval, M0I2 - No mulch + basin irrigation with 15 litres/plant at 20 days interval, M1I0 - Black polythene mulching + no irrigation M1I1 - Black polythene mulching + basin irrigation with 15 litres/plant at 10 days interval, M1I2 - Black polythene mulching + basin irrigation with 15 litres/plant at 20 days interval. M2I0 - Dry leaves mulching + no irrigation, M2I1 - Dry leaves mulching + basin irrigation with 15 litres/plant at 10 days interval, M2I2 - Dry leaves mulching + basin irrigation with 15 litres/plant at 20 days interval. Which are interaction of two factor i.e. mulching and irrigation and each treatment has three replications. Mulching with black polythene followed by basin irrigation with 15 litres/plant at 10 days interval was most effective in improving fruit weight (1089.17g), size (length 12.89cm and diameter 39.18cm) and pulp content (56.16%) followed by dry leaves mulching + basin irrigation 15 litres/plant at 10 days interval. The fruit quality like vitamin C and anthocyanin content were also improved by mulching with black polythene followed by basin irrigation 15 litres/plant at 10 days interval but TSS, acidity whereas total sugar content in the fruits were not affected due to mulching and supplementary irrigation

The paper presents the results of the researches carried out at the Agricultural Research Station Oradea, Bihor County, between 1994 and 2002, regarding millet and wheat yields from a haplic luvosoil polluted under control with oil brought from the exploitation site at Suplacu de Barcău. Phytoremediation is a recent technology that is used to stabilize or remove wastes from soils, groundwater or other medium by using living plants. The experimental device was made out of micro parcels of 1 m², set up in a randomized manner, in a Latin square, polluted with a concentration of: 0, 1, 3, 5 and 10 % (0, 3, 9, 15, and 30 l/m²), oil in the ploughed layer, in four repetitions. The experience was than cultivated with in the first three years with millet (1993-1995), a plant that is considered to be resistant to pollution, and than until 2002 with spring wheat. The tendency of relative yields of polluted plots show that in the time of research period of ten years, the pollutant was phyto degraded, without any ameliorative measures. For the plot variants polluted with different concentration of crude oil, between the relative yields and time of research period was established second degree polynomial correlations, distinct and very significant statistically. The shape of the curves indicates the fact that after a minimum of relative yields, registered in the first or the second year of research period these increases continuously in time, until the finish of the experiment. The intensity of soil pollution, in the last year of research period, using the yield losses, in the plots with 1 % oil concentration is unpolluted, in the plots with 3 % oil concentration is weakly polluted, in the variant plots with 5 % oil concentration is moderate polluted and respectively in the plots with 10 % oil concentration is yet strong polluted. The time of phytodegradation, evaluated with help of equations, through the condition for relative yields to be 95 %, when the soil pollution characterization became unpolluted results that: on the 1 % variant the soil became unpolluted after 5,4 years, on the 3 % after 7,8 years, on the 5 % variant after 9,6 years, and on the 10 % variant the soil became unpolluted after 10,8 years.

His work aims to develop a mathematical model of incident solar radiation on all the walls of a sloping roof habitat for a typical climate in the Ouagadougou region. Subsequently, we set up a program for the calculations of the essential parameters of illumination and the various components of solar radiation under the Fortran Programming Language and to plot our curves using the Origin software. This work allowed us to estimate the amount of solar flux that each wall of a habitat receives during a day, to know the importance of the orientation of the main facade of the habitat to the south and to find out how often the roof is exposed to solar radiation.

ABSTRACT Kale is a vegetable that has high nutrition content, and balanced fertilization is essential to ensure high yield and quality of agricultural products. Curly kale, less known than regular leaf kale, is a new possibility for consumption. However, little is known about the influence of the type of fertilization on nutritional characteristics. This study aims to evaluate the influence of using organic fertilizers on the productivity, microbiological, and physico-chemical characteristics of Darkibor hybrid curly kale. The treatments consisted of three sources of organic fertilizers, one of organomineral fertilizer, and the control (without fertilization). The highest productivity was observed for kale that was treated with fertilizer in the organomineral composition in all harvests. For microbiological analyses, there was no contamination in all treatments, following legislation. There was no significant difference between treatments for the physicochemical composition, highlighting the high levels of phenolic compounds and proteins in curly kale. There was no difference between treatments regarding the mineral content of the leaves. Organic and organomineral fertilizers made it possible to produce curly kale with adequate physicochemical composition, free from microbiological contamination and heavy metals.
