Mosquitoes are potentially harmful and vectors of pathogens. They compromise the rest and well-being of humans and animals. The main goal of this study is to determine the composition of mosquitoes responsible of human biting at the Faculty of Sciences and Technics of Bamako-Mali. Longitudinal monitoring with monthly cross-sectional visit was carried out from September to December 2019, in order to collect the endophilic and endophagic mosquitoes. The spray-catch was used as a collection methodin 21 rooms selected randomly at the FST. Mosquitoes were identified morphologically andthen by PCR. ELISA-CSP test was used for Plasmodium infection index and the ELISA blood-meal test was to determine mosquitoes blood origin. In total, 802 mosquitoes were collected: 794Culex and 8Anopheles. There were 200 males and 602 females. Female mosquitoes were separated by gonotrophic stages: 231 unfed, 223 fed, 80 semi-gravid and 68 gravid. Up to 34% of Culex and 67% of Anopheles had a preference for human blood, but no female tested positive for Plasmodium infection. This result would be due to the small number of Anopheles captured. An. coluzzii is the only Anopheles species collected.This study shows that mosquitoes are linked to serious problems of nuisance and risk of pathogens transmission in the university. They highly prefer to feed on human host.

Simultaneous polydrug use in undergraduate students was studied in one university in Kingston, Jamaica. The study was a cross-sectional, and used a survey method of data collection. We examined protective and risk factors associated with simultaneous polydrug use in a sample of 295 undergraduate students from the health and medical science departments in the university. Our results suggest that continued residence with family, family support, and students' emotional well-being are protective factors. On the other hand, ease of access of substance and limited emotional support may be considered risk factors. Our findings may inform preventive programs, though further research is required.

Background: Results of previous studies examining the impact of the SARS-CoV-1 epidemic in 2003 on university students' mental well-being indicated severe mental health consequences. It is unclear how the current COVID-19 pandemic and the changes in study conditions due to federal regulations affected mental well-being in the German student population. We examined university students' perceptions of study conditions during the COVID-19 pandemic and investigated associations between study conditions and depressive symptoms.Methods: A cross-sectional online survey was conducted in Germany in May 2020 at four universities (N = 5,021, 69% female, mean age: 24 years, SD: 5.1). Perceived study conditions, as well as sociodemographic information, were assessed with self-generated items and the CES-D 8 scale was used to determine depressive symptoms. Associations between perceived study conditions (academic stress and academic satisfaction), in general, and confidence to complete the semester, in particular, and depressive symptoms were analyzed using generalized linear regressions.Results: Fifty-four percent of survey participants felt that the university workload had significantly increased since the COVID-19 pandemic; 48% were worried that they would not be able to successfully complete the academic year; 47% agreed that the change in teaching methods caused significant stress. Regarding depressive symptoms, the mean score of the CES-D 8 scale was 9.25. Further, a positive association between perceived study conditions and depressive symptoms was found (p < 0.001), indicating that better study conditions were associated with fewer depressive symptoms. Results of the generalized linear regression suggest that better student mental well-being was related to higher confidence in completing the semester.Conclusions: This study provides first insights into perceived study conditions and associations with depressive symptoms among students during the COVID-19 pandemic in Germany. Findings underline the need for universities to provide intervention strategies targeting students' mental well-being during the course of the pandemic.

Social anxiety (alternatively: social-contact uncertainty) in the university context can lead to reduced health, well-being, and performance, and can even cause premature leaving of education. With the present study, we intended to supplement cross-sectional studies on students' autistic traits and social anxiety with longitudinal findings. We measured autistic traits and social-contact uncertainty of 118 university students on two occasions, roughly 1 year apart. Correlation, multiple regression, and cross-lagged analyses showed that more pronounced autistic traits predicted higher future social-contact uncertainty. Social-contact uncertainty did not predict autistic traits. We conclude that university students who are high in autistic traits tend not only to be more socially anxious at the moment but have a heightened risk of still being so in the future.

  El estilo de vida es concebido como un comportamiento cotidiano y que permanece en el tiempo, el cual evidencia los patrones individuales de conducta de una persona; además, y está determinado por factores sociales, culturales y personales. La etapa universitaria se constituye en este sentido, en una oportunidad para promover la modificación de hábitos por conductas saludables. El objetivo del estudio fue determinar los estilos de vida en estudiantes universitarios y las diferencias según el sexo y el estatus socioeconómico. Se realizó un estudio cuantitativo, descriptivo de corte transversal con 508 universitarios a quienes se les aplicó una encuesta auto administrada sobre sus condiciones sociodemográficas, mientras que los estilos de vida fueron evaluados mediante el cuestionario de Perfil del Estilo de Vida de Pender II (PEVP-II). Se observó que solo el 24,02% (n=122) de la muestra controla frecuentemente los niveles de azúcares y de grasas el 21,85% (n=111), en su alimentación; más del 20% (n=102) no realiza actividad física, entre el 20 (n=102) y 30% (n=152) no regulan los azúcares o incluyen frutas y vegetales en sus dietas; los promedios inferiores al 60%(n=305) en los factores asociados contemplados en el estudio, infieren que los encuestados no mantienen un estilo de vida saludable. En el período de la vida universitaria, el estilo de vida está influenciado por cambios de comportamientos asociados a la formación personal, al entorno familiar y al contexto cultural y social en que desarrolla cada individuo. Los bajos niveles de práctica de actividad física y la presencia de hábitos considerados riesgosos en la dimensión nutricional, pueden estar relacionados con los estilos de vida, y propiciar el desarrollo de enfermedades no transmisibles que conllevan a incrementar la morbilidad y mortalidad en las etapas del curso de la vida del ser humano.  Abstract. Lifestyles are everyday behaviors that show an individual's way of life and are usually maintained over time. The university stage is an important period to establish healthy habits for the rest of life. The objective of the study was to determine the lifestyles of university students and the differences according to sex and socioeconomic status. A cross-sectional study was carried out in 508 university students to whom a self-administered survey was applied on their sociodemographic conditions, while their lifestyles were evaluated using the PEVP-II questionnaire. It was observed that only 24.02% of the sample frequently controlled the levels of sugars and fats, 21.85%, in their diet; more than 20% do not perform physical activity, between 20 and 30% do not regulate sugars or include fruits and vegetables in their diets; the averages lower than 60% in the associated factors contemplated in the study, infer that the respondents do not maintain a healthy lifestyle. Finally, it is concluded that low levels of physical activity practice and the presence of habits considered risky in the nutritional dimension, may be related to lifestyles, making this identification in the university environment can help decision-making for design of intervention strategies supported in the well-being of students.

(1) Aim: To assess the attitude toward Lifestyle Medicine and healthy behaviours among students in the healthcare area and to demonstrate its association to psychological well-being; (2) Methods: A cross-sectional study is conducted among 508 undergraduates of the University of Palermo (140 (27.6%) in the healthcare area and 368 (72.4%) in the non-healthcare area), during the academic year 2018–2019. Psychological well-being is measured through two dimensions of eudaimonia and hedonia, using the 10-item Hedonic and Eudaimonic Motives for Activities-Revised (HEMA-R) scale, with answers coded on a 7-point scale. The association between demographic and modifiable behavioural risk factors for chronic diseases is assessed through crude and adjusted Odds ratios with 95% confidence intervals; (3) Results: Orientation to both hedonia and eudaimonia is significantly associated to the Mediterranean diet (ORAdj = 2.28; 95% CI = (1.42–3.70)) and drinking spirits less than once a week (ORAdj = 1.89; 95% CI = (1.10–3.27)) and once a week or more (ORAdj = 6.02; 95% CI = (1.05–34.52)), while these conditions occur together less frequently for current smokers (ORAdj = 0.38; 95% CI = (0.18–0.81)). Students inclined to well-being consider healthcare professionals as models for their patients and all people in general (OR = 1.96, 95% CI = (1.28–3.00)); (4) Conclusions: The positive relation found between a virtuous lifestyle and psychological well-being suggests the construction, development and cultivation of individual skills are a means to succeed in counteracting at risk behaviours for health.

Background: University students have increased levels of depression and its complications. Aggression is a serious problem among the university students in Jordan, while spiritual well-being is associated with many psychosocial issues. The purpose of this study was to identify the relationship between depression, aggression, and spiritual well-being among the university students. Methods: A quantitative approach using cross-sectional descriptive-correlation design was used to carry out on convenience sample of 919 students at the University of Jordan. Results:  Almost 55.7% of the university students exhibited some degrees of depression. 51.3% of the students reported high aggression, while 48.7% of the students reported low aggression. The Pearson correlation coefficient test showed positive correlation between depression and aggression (r= .364, p< 0.001), and negative correlation between spiritual well-being and both of depression and aggression (r=-.533, r=-.288, p<0.001) respectively. Conclusions: Depression, aggression, and spiritual well-being were significantly correlated. Psychological counselors, social workers, and teachers at the universities should provide continuous psychological assessment and interventions for the students who reported high levels of aggression and depression. Spiritual well-being should be included in their interventions through various form of community services to enhance the sense of meaning of life, peace, and faith among university students.

Abstract. About one third of university students drop out from their undergraduate studies. The fit between students’ self-construal and university norms has been suggested to contribute to academic success. Building on this idea, we tested a student-university fit model in a cross-sectional online study among 367 German university students. Results support a P-E fit effect, showing that students with a high dignity self-construal and who perceived the university norms to be highly independent indicated the greatest sense of belonging to the university. In turn, belonging positively predicted well-being and academic motivation and reduced dropout intention. In sum, this study suggests that a person-environment fit analysis can contribute to the understanding of healthy student life and academic success.

Abstract Background Defense mechanisms have been a central concept in the field of mental health and psychotherapy. Recently, there has been some research interest in defence mechanisms in empirical psychology. Causes of procrastination are shown to be related to defence mechanisms in terms of students’ dilatory behaviour. Furthermore, the causes of procrastination seem to affect students’ well-being. The aim of the present study is to investigate the effect of defence mechanisms and causes of procrastination on well-being, separately for each gender. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted in Greece with 628 college students at the University of Ioannina (490 females and 138 males). Specially designed and validated instruments were used to record students’ sociodemographic characteristics, defence mechanisms (DM), causes of procrastination (CP) and well-being (WB). Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and Covariance (ANCOVA) was used to investigate the effect of DM and CP on students’ WB separately for each gender. Results Students’ defence mechanisms and causes of procrastination had a statistically significant effect on their well-being. More specifically, female students with a lower percentage of fear of success/ influence of peers (p &lt; 0.001) and maladaptive defense style (p &lt; 0.001) as well as those with higher image-distorting (p &lt; 0.001), self-sacrificing (p = 0.004) and adaptive defense styles (p &lt; 0.001) seemed to have a significantly higher percentage of well-being. On the other hand, male students with a lower percentage of lack of duty/ tolerance of frustration (p = 0.039) and maladaptive style (p &lt; 0.001) but a higher percentage of image distorting (p &lt; 0.001) and adaptive defence styles (p &lt; 0.001) had a significantly higher percentage of well-being. Conclusions Students’ causes of academic procrastination in the combination with the use of defence mechanisms significantly affect their well-being despite, being differentiated according to their gender. Key messages Defense mechanisms play a crucial role in students’ adaptation at the university as well as in their mental health. Emphasis should be given on the design of intervention on students’ procrastination involving non-conscious processes and more structural elements of personality.

Physical activity is important at any time of life. Particularly in the university, people tend to have more sedentary life, due to their studies. Eating habits are another health factor to consider. In addition, the Multiple Intelligences theory is a proposal that seeks the integral development and well-being of people. A descriptive, cross-sectional, and non-experimental research with the purpose of this study is to establish the relationships between practice of physical activity and the intelligences and determine the relationship between diet and the different types of intelligence in 215 university students. Findings indicate higher adherence to Mediterranean Diet in women and higher physical activity scores in men. Regarding multiple intelligences, men have higher indices in Bodily-kinesthetic, Interpersonal, Logical-mathematical, Musical, and Spatial intelligences, while women show higher levels in relation to Linguistic, Intrapersonal, and Naturalistic intelligences. Main conclusions from this study suggest the relationship between multiple intelligence and healthy habits, while also highlighting the need to improve eating habits and achieve greater adherence to Mediterranean Diet.

The new infection by coronavirus has supposed a challenge to all health systems worldwide, affecting our psychosocial health. Education as we knew it has changed, which is why university students, attending Health Sciences courses in this case, have been affected by the pandemic. This study aimed to analyze the impact of the preventative measures and restrictions associated with COVID-19 on multiple mental health and psychological well-being indicators in Health Sciences students at the University of Seville. A descriptive and cross-sectional pilot study in the University of Seville by means of an online questionnaire elaborated was conducted. Of the final sample (n = 68), more than 60% of the students acknowledged having received specific training by their university and/or health institution where they perform practices on COVID-19 measures; however, they negatively emphasized not having received psychosocial aid or support in most of the cases (94.12%). As the health situation imposed by COVID-19 is considered long-lasting, the proposal is to plan short- and long-term strategies for promotion and intervention in the mental health of students and future health care workers.
