Effect of jelly containing of porang (Amorphophalus oncophyllus) glucomannan and inulin as a snack to the body weight, BMI, body fat, total cholesterol, and triglyceride levels in obese adultBackground: Obesity is a major risk factor for noncommunicable diseases, especially cardiovascular disease. Porang glucomannan and inulin are water-soluble fibers that have been widely studied for their health benefits. Jelly products that contain both types of fiber are expected to have the ability to support the diet program in adults with obese nutritional status. Objective: To determine the effect of giving jelly containing a combination of glucomannan porang and inulin on body weight, BMI, body fat, total cholesterol, and triglyceride levels in obese adults.Methods: This research is a randomized controlled trial using a pre and post-test design. A total of 55 subjects who live in the Special Region of Yogyakarta, participated in the study until the end of 8 weeks. Subjects were divided into 3 groups; 18 people in the group who were given jelly containing glucomannan porang and inulin (porang-inulin jelly group), 17 people in the group who were given placebo jelly (placebo jelly group), and 20 people in the negative control group who did not get jelly (negative control group). All subjects received a low-calorie diet intervention of 1,500 kcal in the first month and 1,200 kcal in the second month. Results: There was a significant reduction in body weight and BMI (p<0.05) in all groups, but there was no difference in the effect between the porang–inulin jelly group and the other groups (p>0.05). Clinically, there was a significant decrease in body fat percentage in the porang-inulin jelly group, in subjects with the category of an excess fat percent (-0.90 ± 0.49%) and obesity (-1.48 ± 0.83%). A significant decrease in fat percentage also occurred in the porang-inulin jelly group, both in male subjects (-1.42 ± 0.50%) and female (-1.15 ± 0.82%), while in the placebo jelly group and negative control, the decrease did not occur in all categories and genders. There was an increase in total cholesterol levels in the negative control group (p<0.05) after the study (+7.45 ± 13.18 mg/dL). In the porang-inulin jelly group, the increase in cholesterol levels did not occur significantly either in general or based on clinical categories and gender. Conclusion: Consumption of porang-inulin jelly may support weight loss programs, BMI, percent body fat, and inhibit the increase of total cholesterol and triglyceride levels in adults with obese nutritional status.

Abstract: This research aims to determine the effect of ethanol extract of guava leaves on levels of total cholesterol of rat that is induced propylthiouracil. This was an experimental research. The sample used was 15 rats were divided into 5 groups (1 group is consist of 3 rats), namely: 1) positive control, 2) extract dose of 200 mg/kgBB, 3) extract dose of 400 mg/kgBB, 4) extract dose of 800 mg/kgBB and 5) negative control. Group 1 to 4 are given propylthiouracil given for 14 days, then given treatment appropiate with the group. The result show that: 1) the average of total cholesterol levels increased after administration propylthiouracil from 156.34 mg/dL to 247.84 mg/dL, 2) at a dose of 200 mg/kgBB, 400 mg/kgBB and 800 mg/kgBB showed a decline in total cholesterol levels by 32.73%, 58.73% and 47.26%, 3) the positive control decreased total cholesterol levels by 39.46% and 4) total cholesterol levels on negative is unstable (there are up and some are down). The result of this research concluse that: guava leaf extract at dose of 200 mg/kgBB, 400 mg/kgBB and 800 mg kgBB have an effect in lowering total cholesterol of rat had been induced prophylthiouracil. Keywords: guava leaves, total cholesterol.     Abstrak: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui efek dari ekstrak etanol daun jambu biji terhadap kadar kolesterol total tikus wistar yang diinduksi propiltiourasil. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian eksperimental. Sampel yang digunakan berjumlah 15 tikus wistar yang dibagi menjadi 5 kelompok (1 kelompok terdiri dari 3 tikus wistar), yaitu: 1) kontrol positif, 2) ekstrak dosis 200 mg/kgBB, 3) ekstrak dosis 400 mg/kgBB, 4) ekstrak dosis 800 mg/kgBB dan 5) kontrol negatif. Kelompok 1 sampai 4 diberikan propiltiourasil selama 14 hari, kemudian diberikan perlakuan sesuai kelompoknya. Hasil penelitian yang diperoleh: 1) rata-rata kadar kolesterol total meningkat setelah pemberian propiltiourasil yaitu dari 156,34 mg/dL menjadi 247,84 mg/dL, 2) pada dosis 200 mg/kgBB, 400 mg/kgBB dan 800 mg/kgBB menunjukkan terjadi penurunan kadar kolesterol total sebesar 32,73%, 58,73% dan 47,26%, 3) pada kontrol positif terjadi penurunan kadar kolesterol total sebesar 39,46% dan 4) kadar kolesterol total pada kelompok negatif tidak stabil (ada yang naik dan ada yang turun). Hasil penelitian ini menyimpulkan bahwa ekstrak daun jambu biji pada dosis 200 mg/kgBB, 400 mg/kgBB dan 800 mg/kgBB mempunyai efek dalam menurunkan kadar kolesterol total tikus wistar yang telah diinduksi propiltiourasil. Kata kunci: daun jambu biji, kadar kolesterol total.

Introduction: Simvastatin is a primary pharmacological therapy for dyslipidemia (hypercholesterolemia). Virgin coconut oil (VCO) is a companion intake of statin drugs considered capable of lowering blood cholesterol levels. This study aimed to determine the combination effect of statin drug groups with VCO on total cholesterol.Methods: The stages of this study started with the adaptation process of animals, giving a high-fat diet (HFD), and treatment with simvastatin and VCO. The adaptation process was conducted where the experimental animals were fed pellets and drank clean water in a container. A HFD was given by mixing pork brains with distilled water with a ratio of 1:3 as much as 2 ml per day for 21 days. In simvastatin and VCO treatment for 7 days, the experimental animals were divided into 4 groups; group I was given aquades, group II was given VCO, group III was given simvastatin, and group IV was given simvastatin and VCO. The total cholesterol levels in the blood of albino rats were examined by employing a BS-300 Chemistry Analyzer through a spectrophotometric method. The total cholesterol levels data obtained were then examined for normality (Shapiro-Wilk test) and analyzed parametrically by utilizing One-way ANOVA.Results: The average total cholesterol level in the negative control group (being given a standard diet) was 45.57 mg/dL. The averages of blood total cholesterol levels were 47.28 mg/dL, 45.00 mg/dL, 46.85 mg/dL, 41.42 mg/dL, and 44.28 mg/dL in the positive control group (given an HFD), in the treatment group I, in the treatment group II, in the treatment group III, and in the treatment group IV, respectively. There were no significant distinctions in the statistical test on decreasing blood total cholesterol among the negative control group, positive controls I, II, III, and IV.Conclusion: Combination of simvastatin and VCO tends to reduce the total cholesterol level in albino rats. This is better than just giving VCO simvastatin alone.

Insulin resistance, which precedes type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), is a widespread pathology associated with the metabolic syndrome, myocardial ischemia, and hypertension. Finding an adequate treatment for this pathology is an important goal in medicine. The purpose of the present research was to investigate the effect of an extract from Aloe vera gel containing a high concentration of polyphenols on experimentally induced insulin resistance in mice. A polyphenol-rich Aloe vera extract (350 mg/kg) with known concentrations of aloin (181.7 mg/g) and aloe-emodin (3.6 mg/g) was administered orally for a period of 4 weeks to insulin resistant ICR mice. Pioglitazone (50 mg/kg) and bi-distilled water were used as positive and negative controls respectively. Body weight, food intake, and plasma concentrations of insulin and glucose were measured and insulin tolerance tests were performed. The insulin resistance value was calculated using the homeostasis model assessment for insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) formula. Results showed that the polyphenol-rich extract from Aloe vera was able to decrease significantly both body weight ( p < 0.008) and blood glucose levels ( p < 0.005) and to protect animals against unfavorable results on HOMA-IR, which was observed in the negative control group. The highest glucose levels during the insulin tolerance curve test were in the negative control group when compared to the Aloe vera extract and pioglitazone treated mice ( p < 0.05). In conclusion, Aloe vera gel could be effective for the control of insulin resistance.

Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate hypoglycemic and hypolipidemic effects of Annona muricata leaf ethanol extract. This study also investigated phytochemical analysis of the extract and improvement in the islet of Langerhans.Methods: Hypoglycemic and hypolipidemic effects were evaluated using alloxan induced diabetic rats. Twenty-five Wistar rats devided into five groups, that are normal group, control group that induced by alloxan 125 mg/kg body weight and given CMC (carboxymethyl cellulose), and three treatment group that induced by alloxan and given Annona muricata leaf ethanol extract (AMLEE) with 50, 100 and 200 mg/kg body weight. Blood glucose and total cholesterol levels were measured before and after alloxan induction, and 21 d after AMLEE treatment. At the end of the study, all of the animals experiment were sacrificed for histopathological examination.Results: Phytochemical analysis revealed that flavonoids, tannins, saponins, phytosterols and phenols were present in ethanol extract of Annona muricata L. leaf. At the end of the study, blood glucose and total cholesterol levels in all AMLEE treated group were decreased significantly (p<0.05). Final blood glucose level in the groups that given AMLEE 50 mg/kg body weight (86.7±14.6 mg/dl) was almost the same with that of the normal group (91.25±28.38 mg/dl). The result of the histopathological examination is not showed an improvement of the islet of Langerhans in AMLEE treated groups.Conclusion: In conclusion, the ethanol extract of Annona muricata L. leaf have hypoglycemic and hypolipidemic effects. However, there was no improvement in the islet of Langerhans damage.

Abstract Background Anthropometric data and dietary intake pattern are poorly known in Asian inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) patients. The aim of this study was to investigate the nutritional status and nutrient intake of IBD patients compared with control population. Methods From February to June 2018, a total of 65 outpatients, including 33 ulcerative colitis (UC) and 32 Crohn’s disease (CD) were prospectively enrolled in Gangnam Severance Hospital. As a control group, age- and gender-matched 260 subjects were included among the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) data. Anthropometry and body composition data were collected by bioelectrical impedance analysis(BIA); meanwhile, nutrient intake was measured based on diet diary. Results Based on Asia Pacific criteria, more than half of both UC and control group were obese or overweight, on the other hands, CD was relatively low, about 1/3. Compared with the UC group, body fat index including both fat mass index (FMI) and body fat percentage (BFP) were significantly lower in the CD group. Following nutrients intake including intake of energy, carbohydrate, niacin, sodium and potassium were significantly lower in UC than the control group. Meanwhile, intake of carbohydrate, thiamine, niacin, sodium, potassium and iron was significantly lower in CD than the control group. In addition, the ratio of energy intake through protein and fat was significantly higher in the IBD than the control group. Conclusion Similar to the control group, more than half of UC patients were overweight or obesity, meanwhile, the proportion of obese patients in CD was lower than in the control group. The ratio of energy intake through protein and fat was significantly higher in IBD than in the control group. Our results may have clinical implications for risk of IBD development in terms of dietary pattern and further direction of nutritional intervention.

Body mass index (BMI) is to monitor nutritional status adults, especially those related to deficiency and overweight. Body fat percentage can describe the risk of degenerative diseases.This study was conducted to measure the relationship between BMI and body fat percentage. Methods An analytical study was conducted to 41 male and 51 female participant from Universitas Teuku Umar. The body weight was measured using scales, whereas the body height was measured using microtoise. The body fat percentage was measured using Karada Scan. The BMI was calculated by dividing the body weight in kilogram divided by body height in meter square. Data was collected from 16-18th February 2021 and analyzed by Pearson’s correlation test. The results showed BMI underweight, normal, and overweight were 10,9, 57,6, and 31,5. High body fat percentage in men were 75,6% and in women were 35,5%. There is a relationship between the nutritional status of the women group and the body fat percentage with p-value is obtained = 0.021. Furthermore, for men, there is no relationship between nutritional status in the men group and the body fat percentage. There is a relationship between nutritional status and body fat percentage in women. Among this population, BMI can still be used to determine body fat percentage

Diarrhea is an increase frequency and decrease consistency of fecal when compared with the bowel condition of normal individuals. The high incidence of acute and chronic diarrhea encourages researchers to keep trying to find new antidiarrheal drugs, especially from plants. The leaves of Moringa (Moringa oleifera Lam) contain tannins which are polyphenolic compounds and has benefits as anantidiarrheal.This study aims to determine the activity of the ethanol extract of moringa leaves as an antidiarrheal by looking at intestinal motility. The extraction process was carried out by maceration method using ethanol 70%..The result research is the average value of the treatment ratio is smaller than the negative control group. The average value of the ratio of the group was given by ethanol extract of moringa leaves at a dose of 9.1 mg / 20 g body weight was 0.664; ethanol extract of moringa leaves at dose of 18.2 mg / 20 g body weight was 0.434 and ethanol extract of moringa leaves at dose of 36.4 mg / 20 g body weight was 0.389. From this value, it is known that the ethanol extract of Moringa leaves has an antidiarrheal effect by inhibiting intestinal motility. The effect of the ethanol extract of Moringa leaves in inhibiting intestinal motility is best at a dose of 36.4 mg / 20 g body weight with an average value ratio of 0.389.

Background: Obesity is known as one of the most important cardiovascular risk factors. Objectives: This quasi-experimental study was conducted to investigate the effect of an eight-week aerobic exercise and garlic extract use on the blood pressure, fat percentage, and lipid profile of patients with hypertension. Methods: A total of 50 men with a mean age of 53 ± 7.6 years were recruited from among obese patients with blood pressure. They were randomly divided into five groups of aerobic exercise, garlic extract, aerobic exercise plus garlic extract, placebo, and control. The experimental groups underwent aerobic exercise (3 sessions per week, each session for 35 - 60 min with a maximum heart rate of 50 - 75) or garlic extract supplementation (daily use of 6 g) for eight weeks. Blood samples were collected before interventions and 48 h after the last exercise session. Statistical analysis was done by the dependent t-test and ANCOVA. Results: Body weight, body fat percentage, systolic and diastolic blood pressures, and serum LDL significantly reduced in the aerobic exercise, garlic extract, and aerobic exercise plus garlic extract groups compared to the control group (P ≤ 0.05). Aerobic exercise and aerobic exercise plus garlic extract groups showed a significant decrease in total cholesterol level and serum triglyceride and an increase in serum HDL compared to the control group (P ≤ 0.05). Aerobic exercise plus garlic extract group indicated a higher increase in serum HDL and a higher decrease in the body weight, body fat percentage, and serum LDL compared with the control group (P ≤ 0.05). Aerobic exercise plus garlic extract group indicated a higher serum LDL decrease compared to the aerobic exercise group (P ≤ 0.01). Conclusions: Both aerobic exercise and garlic extract seem to be able to improve obesity, lipid profile, and hypertension. However, their concurrent use has no additional effects on the blood pressure control although it mostly influences lipid profile and body composition.

The experiment was conducted to investigate the protective effect of Petroselinum crispum leave extracted against gentamicin-induced nephrotoxicity in male rabbits by studying the body weight, clinical signs, haematological and biochemical parameters, gross lesion and histopathological changes. Twenty four rabbits male were used and divided into 4 groups. Group 1: rabbits served as a negative control, received distilled water 1 ml(orally). Group 2: rabbits served as a positive control group, received gentamicin at a dose of 80 mg/kg/day intramuscular for 15 days. Group 3: rabbits received gentamicin at a dose of 80 mg/kg/day then after one hour treated with ethanolic extract of Petroselinum crispum at dose 125 mg/kg orally for 15 days. Group 4: rabbits received gentamicin at a dose of 80 mg/kg/day then after one hour treated with ethanolic extract of Petroselinum crispum at dose 250 mg/kg orally for 15 days.The results of the gentamicin treated group( positive control group) showed clinical signs such as loss of body weight, loss of appetite and rough hair with hematuria. The body weight a significantly declined (p≤ 0.05) compared other groups. There was a significant decrease (p≤ 0.05) in WBC count, lymphocyte, GSH, SOD, CAT, and GPX levels, while it recorded a significant increase (p≤0.05) in weights of the kidneys, neutrophils, creatinine, urea, and MDA. Histological studies showed several kidney pathological changes such as pale colour, enlargement in size and weight and easy from detaching as opposed to negative control group. On the other hand, the group treated with ethanolic extractof Petroselinum crispum at dose 125 mg/kg induced improved of parameters as recorded significant increased(P ≤ 0.05) in body weight, WBC count, lymphocyte, GSH, SOD, CAT, and GPX, while significant decreased (P ≤ 0.05) in weights of the kidneys, neutrophils, creatinine, urea, and MDA compared with the positive control group whereas rabbits treated with ethanolic extract of Petroselinum crispum at dose 250 mg/kg restored the parameters and histological changes of the kidney to near normal status compared with the negative control group. These results showed that the dose-detected Petroselinum crispum extract (250mg / kg) acts as potential curative effect against gentamicin-induced nephrotoxicity in male rabbits.

Introduction: In humans, Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) can damage some tissue when the immune systems was decrease. Natural product from the plant often used to improve immune response against microorganism including virus. This study aimed to determine the potential antioxidant of lemongrass extract (C . nardus) with various dosage that can provide immunomodulatory effects and find an optimal dosage to be used.  Methods: The method used observasional analytic, using animal model of 30 male mice strain BALB/C, weight 25-30 gram, divided into 5 groups; the positive control group was given 0.05 mL of  0.05% CMC within 14 days, negative control group was given IMBOOST® tablet 200 mg/kg body weight (bw) within 14 days, treatment groups  were given C. nardus extract with various doses 50 mg/kg bw, 150 mg/kg bw, and 300 mg/kg bw.  In day 21 all group were injected with 0,2 ml of  pathogen bacterial (S. aureus). Blood samples were taken three times: 7th day, 14th day, and 21th day. Results: The results showed that lemongrass extract (C. nardus) was able to influence the leukocyte and lymphocytes count with significant different (p<0.05). The optimal dose is 150 mg/kg body weight. Conclusion: The antioxidant compounds that contain in the C. nardus extract have an ability to increasing the immune system in the dose 150 mg/kg bw , but in the dose 300 mg/kg bw became toxic that can make a skin injury or death in animal test.
