Ancestral land or tana sangkol in Madura is a significant material asset possessed by the Madurese people, with attached social and cultural values that link the living and the dead. Massive development on the island, however, has seen people selling their tana sangkol to foreign investors for conversion into shrimp ponds and hotels. This study aimed to analyze tana sangkol’s representation in three short stories, “Anak Cangkul,” “Kutukan Tanah Leluhur,” and “Tanah Warisan,” by Zainul Muttaqin, an author from Sumenep, Madura. The discussion mainly focused on the dramatic contribution of poverty to the sale of tana sangkol to investors, an act that is believed to bring bad luck to the sellers. Furthermore, tana sangkol epitomizes pride to the Madurese people, making them more willing to resist the intrusion of foreign investment. A qualitative research method with a close reading technique was applied and the data were analyzed using the post-colonial ecocriticism theory of Graham Huggan and Helen Tiffin. The results showed that there has been a shift in how the Madurese view their tana sangkol, with them no longer regarding it as sacred ancestral land. Moreover, it is considered to have social and cultural contexts due to its close relationship with the Madurese people’s identity. Meanwhile, the oppression toward farmers is seen as structural and hierarchical.

Abstract This research focuses on the issue of state-minority contestations involving transforming and reconstituting each other in post-independent Sri Lanka. This study uses a qualitative research method that involves critical categories of analysis. Migdal’s theory of state-in-society was applied because it provides an effective conceptual framework to analyse and explain the data. The results indicate that the unitary state structure and discriminatory policies contributed to the formation of a minority militant social force (the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam – The LTTE) which fought with the state to form a separate state. The several factors that backed to the defeat of the LTTE in 2009 by the military of the state. This defeat has appreciably weakened the Tamil minority. This study also reveals that contestations between different social forces within society, within the state, and between the state and society in Sri Lanka still prevail, hampering the promulgation of inclusive policies. This study concludes that inclusive policies are imperative to end state minority contestations in Sri Lanka.

The article is devoted to the analysis of folk mythology from the region of Pčinja, located on the Serbian-Macedonian border and preserving the archaic features in the local tradition at the turn of the 21th century, when we have an ethnolinguistic expedition in the village of Jablanica (1998). It is shown that the specificity of folk mythological representations is related to the location of the region at the intersection of the main traditions of the Eastern part of South Slavia. However, a number of recorded mythological names connect the region with the Central and Western parts of Southern Slavia. The features of the tradition that have parallels in Eastern, South-Eastern and Southern Serbia (including Serbian Kosovo villages), Macedonia and Western Bulgaria are analyzed in detail. The paper uses an ethnolinguistic research method aimed at studying language phenomena in close relationship with the extralinguistic context, which is especially important for the analysis of folk mythological representations, when the same demonological image may have different names, and vice versa, heterogeneous in genesis and functions mythological characters are designated by one common name for the demon. The study uses еtymological and dialect dictionaries, the ethnolinguistic Kosovo archive, as well as ethnographic works from different regions of South Slavia.

In 1880, when the British moved their Federated Malay States administrative centre to Kuala Lumpur, the Padang quickly became a symbol of British economic and administrative colonisation, and a nucleus of the socio-cultural development of Kuala Lumpur. This paper discusses the layers of history, symbolism and cultural values that the Padang contributes to the socio-cultural tapestry of both Kuala Lumpur and Malaysia, and the lack of relevant planning and heritage measures to conserve these attributes and characteristics. The conclusions offer avenues to engage with pre- and post-colonisation that enable re-making and the conservation of the iconic space of Kuala Lumpur. Keywords: Urban open space; Merdeka Square; Kuala Lumpur City Hall; National Heritage Act 2005eISSN: 2398-4287 © 2019. This lecture is in three main parts. The first describes the author’s background in a provincial middle class family and the leftish values he absorbed from what is now called “cultural radicalism”. His discontent with his life in urban, capitalist society led him to study anthropology in the belief that “natural” societies of “happiness” could be found far out in the world. The second part briefly characterizes cultural radicalism as a field of progressive intellectual movements in Denmark from the 1920s that fought for the liberation of women, sexuality and the education of children. Danish cultural radicals took an interest in anthropology already during the 30s, when Malinowski’s discovery of free sex in the Trobriands was celebrated, and throughout the 1950s when books by Benedict and Mead on cultural relativity and child training were translated. With the great expansion of the middle class from the 50s the ideas of cultural radicalism deeply changed modern Danish cultural values and institutions. The third part is a critique of what I call “left-wing orientalism”. Cultural relativism was used as a cultural critique of our own society in order to call for reforms. In left-wing orientalism this stance is petrified so that only our society is “wrong” while all the “others” must not be criticized. I discuss three examples of this in anthropology: the general uncritical acceptance of the policies of indigenous movements; the post-colonial “retrospective retouching” of unseemly earlier practices such as cannibalism and, finally, the readiness of anthropologists in Denmark to put the blame for ethnic tensions in the country on the Danes only and their reluctance to take a critical stance to the patriarchal suppression of women and its religious legitimation that young immigrants now themselves speak out against.
