Objective: Phytochemical is naturally present in the seaweeds which biologically play a significant role. The intention of this study was designed to screen the phytochemical constituents and antimicrobial potential of selected seaweed collected from Rameshwaram and Tuticorin Southern coast of India.Methods: The present study investigated the presence of phytochemical constituents and also total phenol, total carbohydrate and total protein quantity of the brown seaweed. Dictyopteris delicatula, Padina gymnospora, Acanthophora spicifera, Portieria hornemannii and Ulva faciata were extracted with solvents having different polarities like methanol, ethanol, chloroform and water and screened for the phytochemical constituents, total phenol, total carbohydrate, total protein and DPPH with standard procedure. The antibacterial activities of the seaweeds were examined by agar well diffusion method.Results: Among the five seaweeds, U. faciata showed the maximum number of active constituents in the methanol extract likewise P. gymnospora was found to have a number of diligent compounds in ethanol extract. A. spicifera showed minimum compounds in ethanol as well as chloroform extract. Moreover A. spicifera, P. hornemannii have shown the superior quantity of protein and carbohydrate when compared to other species. The scavenging activity of methanol extracts at 5 mg/ml concentration P. hornemannii shows 18.2% and A. spicifera possess 17.1%. In the antibacterial activity, methanol extracts of all the seaweed showed a potential inhibitory activity against B. cereus and P. aeruginosa compared to other pathogens.Conclusion: The crude extract of seaweed manifest preferable antimicrobial and antioxidant activities, hence in the future, it would be good if it is further taken for treatment of human diseases or as new antimicrobial agents to replace synthetic antimicrobial agents.

Alginates extracted from brown seaweed have a variety of prospective applications such as thickeners, stabilizers, or restructuring agents. Due to its properties as a natural polysaccharide, alginate is very potential to be used as edible films for food packaging purposes. Edible films are developed for food protection being excellent barriers to gases but not to moisture. Incorporation of antimicrobial agents into edible film formulation can extend product shelf life and reduce the risk of pathogenic bacterial growth on food. Therefore, this study was aimed to develop an alginate based antibacterial edible film. Antibacterial agent extracted from lemongrass leaves using ethanol was employed. The study was conducted by varying the addition levels of lemongrass ethanol extract to the alginate based edible films, i.e. 0.5%, 1.0% and 1.5%. Before being added to the alginate based edible films, the lemongrass ethanol extract was investigated for its antibacterial activity. The edible films obtained were analyzed in terms of physical, mechanical and chemical and microbiological parameters, including thickness, water vapor transmission rate (WVTR), brightness, tensile strength, elongation, moisture content, water solubility and antibacterial activity. Results showed that the higher addition levels of lemongrass ethanol extract tended to produce alginate based edible films with lower WVTR and brightness value as well as higher elongation, moisture content and water solubility. Edible film added with lemongrass ethanol extract resulted in this study demonstrated antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus. The addition of lemongrass alcohol extract at 0.5% was considered as a recommended concentration level for producing alginate based antibacterial edible films.

Objective: The present study was on the analysis of the phytochemical constituents of Coleus forskohlii which was collected from five different areas in Tamil Nadu, where it is grown for commercial purposes.Methods: C. forskohlii tubers were collected from five areas (Thiruvannamalai, Kanchipuram, Kallakuruchi, Salem, and Vandalur) of Tamil Nadu. Dried tubers were extracted with different solvents such as aqueous, ethanol, and acetone (polar) and petroleum and chloroform (non-polar). Extracts were evaluated for total phenol and flavonoid content and antioxidant activity evaluation by 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) reduction.Results: The highest DPPH radical scavenging activity (87.6%) was observed in ethanol extract of rhizome collected from Thiruvannamalai area. Total phenol and flavonoid contents were found to be, respectively, 38.82±0.22 mg gallic acid equivalents/g and 21.34±0.32 quercetin equivalent/g.Conclusion: The study clearly indicated the antioxidative potential of different extracts of C. forskohlii and this property may be useful in the preparation of drug formulations, health tonics, and cosmetics.

Astract Muntingia calabura plant is a plant in Indonesia that has a variety of functions. It is used as a herbal ingredient to treat certain diseases and also as an antibacterial as well as natural antioxidants. Because inside the leaves there are various bioactive compound that can be used for the sake of herbal making. The purpose of this study is to do early screening of Muntingia calabura leaf extract using ethanol and aquos solvent. The method used in extraction is maceration exaction. The phytochemical analysis performed are total phenols, total flavonoids and antioxidants (IC50). The results showed a total phenol in the ethanol extract was 361.22 mg of GAE/g total flavonoids was 42.46 mg QE/g and antioxidant activity (IC50) was 131.22 μg/mL. At the aquos extract, total phenol was 267.61 mg of GAE/g, total flavonoids was 16.22 mg QE/g and antioxidant activity (IC50) was 129.31 μg/mL. By seeing the total phenol and antioxidants in both the extract (ethanol and aquos), the Muntingia calabura leaves have the potential to be used as herbal ingredients and antimicrobial agents.

Free radicals in the body are responsible for physiological stress and deterioration of the body functions. The antioxidants are used to fight the oxygen-free radicles and neutralize them. Apart from the potency of the drugs as antioxidants, there had been many reported side effects of synthetic drugs. Herbs are used as alternatives for the treatment of many diseases which are devoid of side effects. The current research focusses on the comparison of the antioxidant profile of the ethanol and methanol extracts of leaves of Tectona. Tectona grandis extracts were tested for antioxidant activities and compared with ethanol and methanol extracts in various methods. The results showed that the methanol extract showed better activity than that of the ethanol extract and when compared to the standard extracts showed higher antioxidant activity.

Crab apple (Malus baccata (L.) Borkh.) was mainly distributed in Europe as an ornamental plant, but the nutritional properties of its edible fruits were not fully revealed. The aim of the current study was to characterize the phytochemical composition of ripen carb apple fruits and to evaluate their nutritional and antioxidant potentials. The fruits were assayed for moisture and ash content, proteins, lipids, carbohydrates, titratable acidity (TA), pH, total phenolic compounds and natural pigments. Among the analyzed carbohydrates cellulose was found in the highest content (6% dw), followed by sugars (sucrose, glucose and fructose) and 1.8 % dw uronic acids. The total chlorophylls and carotenoids contents in their fruits were 6.51 and 4.80 μg/g fw, respectively. Total monomeric anthocyanins were not detected. The highest content of total phenolic compounds (2.67 mg GAE/g fw) was found in 95 % ethanol extract from fruits, while the total flavonoids were relatively low – 0.1 mg QE/g fw. DPPH assay (17.27 mM TE/g fw) and FRAP assay (14.34 mM TE/g fw) demonstrated in vitro antioxidant activities of crabapple. Malus baccata fruits were evaluated as a rich source of dietary fibers and phenolic compounds with significant antioxidant potential that could be used in human nutrition.

Background: Marine sponges provided a great source of natural products with promising biological activity. This study was aimed to investigate the chemical constituents of methanol extracts of selected Indonesian marine sponges (Callyspongia sp., Clathria sp., Melophlus sarasinorum, and Xestospongia sp.), collected from the Saponda Islands, Southeast Sulawesi, Indonesia as well as to evaluate their antimicrobial and antioxidant activities. Methods: LCMS/MS analysis used to identify the compounds. Agar well diffusion and DPPH assays were used to evaluate the antimicrobial and antioxidant activities. Results: Chemical screening reported alkaloids, terpenoids, steroids, and saponins from all investigated sponges. The LC-MS/MS analysis identified various compounds which mainly contained steroids. Antimicrobial activity (against Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli, Salmonella enterica, and Candida albicans) was only shown by the Xestospongia sp. extract. Meanwhile, extracts of M. sarasinorum, Xestospongia sp., and Callyspongia sp. exhibited potent radical scavenging activity. Conclusion: The study concluded that the selected sponges could provide various groups of compounds. Methanol extracts of these sponges could be used as sources of antimicrobial and antioxidant agents.

Makhana is an important aquatic, annual and seed propagated crop with gigantic floating leaves. It is known as Gorgon nut (Euryale ferox Salisb) belongs to family Nympheaceae. Swarna Vaidehi has been released as an ever first variety of makhana originated from selection-6. Nutritional profiling was undertaken for popped seeds of Swarna Vaidehi and local cultivar along with raw seeds of “Swarna Vaidehi”. Standard procedure was applied for nutritional profiling of the Makhana samples. Results reveled that maximum moisture content (34.7%) %) was recorded in case of raw seeds of swarna vaidehi. Maximum ash content (0.4%) was recorded in case popped seeds of both tested samples i.e. swarna vaidehi, lowest value (0.3%). Maximum seed protein (8.7%) was obtained by the swarna vaidehi. Maximum crude fiber (0.5%) was obtained in the raw seeds of swarna vaidehi as compare to popped one. Maximum total carbohydrate (79.8%) was recorded in popped seeds of swarna vaidehi; however the lowest value (57.0%) was also noticed in raw seeds of swarna vaidehi. It worth to notice that maximum calorific value (358) was recorded in popped seeds of swarna vaidehi. Maximum (18.5mg) calcium content was recorded in case of popped seeds of swarna vaidehi. Likewise maximum (1.3) manganese content was recorded in case of popped seeds of swarna vaidehi. It was worth to mention that maximum (1.1) zinc content was recorded in case of popped seeds of swarna vaidehi.

AbstractSample particle size is an important parameter in the solid–liquid extraction system of natural products for obtaining their bioactive compounds. This study evaluates the effect of sample particle size on the phytochemical composition and antioxidant activity of brown macroalgae Sargassum cristaefolium. The crude ethanol extract was extracted from dried powders of S.cristeafolium with various particle sizes (> 4000 µm, > 250 µm, > 125 µm, > 45 µm, and < 45 µm). The ethanolic extracts of S.cristaefolium were analysed for Total Phenolic Content (TPC), Total Flavonoid Content (TFC), phenolic compound concentration and antioxidant activities. The extract yield and phytochemical composition were more abundant in smaller particle sizes. Furthermore, the TPC (14.19 ± 2.08 mg GAE/g extract to 43.27 ± 2.56 mg GAE/g extract) and TFC (9.6 ± 1.8 mg QE/g extract to 70.27 ± 3.59 mg QE/g extract) values also significantly increased as particle sizes decreased. In addition, phenolic compounds epicatechin (EC), epicatechin gallate (ECG), epigallocatechin (EGC), and Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) concentration were frequently increased in samples of smaller particle sizes based on two-way ANOVA and Tukey’s multiple comparison analysis. These results correlate with the significantly stronger antioxidant activity in samples with smaller particle sizes. The smallest particle size (< 45 µm) demonstrated the strongest antioxidant activity based on DPPH, ABTS, hydroxyl assay and FRAP. In addition, ramp function graph evaluates the desired particle size for maximum phytochemical composition and antioxidant activity is 44 µm. In conclusion, current results show the importance of particle size reduction of macroalgae samples to increase the effectivity of its biological activity.
