Objectives: The purpose of this study was to determine burn wound healing activity of Acalypha indica L. in oinment formulated. Design: This study uses an experimental laboratory design. This study used rabbits as test animals induced by burns with hot iron plates on the back. Extract ointment applied to the wound then observed the development of healing. Interventions: The extract was formulated in ointments with concentrations of 3, 5 and 7%. positive control used was ointment containing sesame oil and negative control used is an ointment base. Main outcome measure: The results showed a concentration of 3% had a slow and low effect, at a concentration of 5% it had a moderate healing phase, and a concentration of 7% had a good healing phase. Conclusion: The ointments containing Acalypha indica leaf extracts have good activity in healing burns in rabbits.

Burn wound healing process consists of three phases of inflammation, proliferation and remodelling. The number of fibroblasts has increased during the proliferation phase. Oxidative stress in burn may disrupt proliferation through TGF-β inhibition, result in decreased number of fibroblasts and poor burn wound healing. Genistein in edamame seeds has anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and antioxidant properties. Edamame contains vitamins A, C, and E which is also have antioxidant properties. Edamame has been suggested to protect burn wound healing from oxidative stress. This study aimed to understand the effectiveness of edamame seed (Glycine max L. Merril) ethanolic extract (ED) to fibroblast count in second degree burn wound healing. This is true experimental research with post test only control group design. The study was conducted at University of Jember during November until December 2017. The sample of this research was 24 rat models of second degree burn which was made by attaching hot metal (60 ° C) for 5 seconds on the shaved back of the rats. The sample was divided into 6 groups with topical treatment, among others: positive control group (silver sulfadiazine), negative control group (Na CMC 0.5%), group with ED 20%, ED 40%, ED 60%, and ED 80%. Treatment was given for 15 days and skin sample was taken on the 16th day. Observation of the number of fibroblasts was done by taking pictures of histhologic preparations in Hematoxylin and Eosin staining under 400x magnification of light microscope. The number of fibroblast of each picture was processed using Image-J software. In one way ANOVA test, significance value of 0.011 (p≤0,05) indicated that there was at least a significant difference between 2 groups. LSD’s post hoc analysis showed that there was a significant difference in the group ED 20, 40, and 60% compared with negative control.   Keyword: burn wound healing, vegetable soybean, genistein, fibroblast count, silver sulfadiazine

Full-thickness burns pose a major challenge for clinicians to handle because of their restricted self-healing ability. Even though several approaches have been implemented for repairing these burnt skin tissue defects, all of them had unsatisfactory outcomes. Moreover, during recent years, skin tissue engineering techniques have emerged as a promising approach to improve skin tissue regeneration and overcome the shortcomings of the traditional approaches. Although previous literatures report the wound healing effects of the squalene oil, in the current study, for the first time, we developed a squalene-loaded emulgel-based scaffold as a novel approach for potential skin regeneration. This squalene-loaded agar-based emulgel scaffold was fabricated by using physical cross-linking technique using lecithin as an emulsifier. Characterization studies such as X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and field emission scanning electron microscopy revealed the amorphous nature, chemical interactions, and cross-linked capabilities of the developed emulgel scaffold. The squalene-loaded emulgel scaffold showed excellent wound contraction when compared with the agar gel and negative control. In case of the histopathology and recent immunohistochemistry findings, it was clearly evidenced that squalene-loaded emulgel promoted faster rate of the revascularization and macrophage polarization in order to enhance the burn wound healing. Moreover, the findings also revealed that the incorporation of squalene oil into the formulation enhances collagen deposition and accelerates the burnt skin tissue regeneration process. Finally, we conclude that the squalene-loaded emulgel scaffold could be an effective formulation used in the treatment of the burnt skin tissue defects.

The qualitative composition of phenolic acids and burn wound healing activity of Prunella grandiflora L. extract were studied. The content of rosmarinic (621±5 mg/g), coffeic (11.2±0.2 mg/g), syringic (46.5±1.4 mg/g), n-coumaric (25.8±0.5 mg/g), and ferulic (42.7±2.9 mg/g) acids in dry extracts of P. grandiflora was determined by HPLC. Three new burn-healing agents of different composition containing 5% of the dry extract of Prunella grandiflora L. (big-flowered self-heal) were developed. The developed agents were tested on male Wistar rats with second- and third-degree thermal burns. An assessment of skin restoration was carried out in experimental and control groups of animals. It was revealed that animals treated with the developed soft dosage forms restored the epithelium and coat 6–8 days faster that those treated with compositions containing no extract under study. It was found that the developed soft dosage forms based on P. grandiflora extract exhibit anti-inflammatory and wound-healing action.

Tawas ut tuber (Ampelocissus rubiginosa Lauterb.) is empirically used in wound healing by Dayak community. The present study was undertaken to assess wound healing activity of gel from ethanol extract of A. rubiginosa tuber using parameters of the closure of wound length, tensile strength, and histopathological observations. This study used twenty-five male Wistar rats divided into five groups: positive control (Bioplacenton®), negative control (placebo gel), and three of testing groups with gel extract (concentrations of 1.5%, 2.0%, and 2.5%). Wound healing activity was evaluated to 4 cm length and ± 2 mm depth incision wound model on the back skin of rats. The measurement of wound length was observed on the day of 4th, 8th, 12th, 16th, and 20th used quantitative analyze. On the day of 20th, animal was anaesthetized and the skin has been taken for tensile strength evaluation and histopathological observations. This study showed that group treated with gel extract at the concentration of 2.5% experienced higher wound healing activity with average percentage of wound closure of 99.00% ± 0.16, tensile strength 3.8541 gram/mm2, and proved with the re-epithelization, neocapillarization, and increase collagen density appeared in histopathological observations. Based on this study, gel from ethanol extract of A. rubiginosa tuber possesses wound healing activity.

The Effect of Treatment Using Stingless Bee Propolis Extract on Burn Wound Healing in Rattus norvegicus Burn would occurs as a result of direct or indirect fire burns, exposure to sunlight and chemicals. This study aims to analyze the effect of stingless bee propolis extract (Tetragonula fuscobalteata) on the burn wound healing of the back skin of Rattus norvegicus. An experimental research was carried out using the control and experimental groups. Twenty five R. norvegicus were divided into 5 groups: the negative control group was given 70% ethanol, the positive control group was given Bioplacenton® and 3 groups were treated with propolis extract with a concentration of 50%, 70% and 100%. Measurement of burn diameter was carried out every 2 days for 21 days. Data were analyzed statistically using the one way Anova method. The results of phytochemical screening showed that the stingless bee propolis extract contained flavonoids, phenolics, tannins and saponins. The test of the effectiveness of propolis extract against burn wound obtained a sig value of 0.00 (< 0.05). stingless bee propolis extract could heal burn wound in R. norvegicus. Luka bakar dapat terjadi akibat terbakar api secara langsung atau tidak langsung, paparan sinar matahari dan bahan kimia. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis pengaruh ekstrak propolis lebah tanpa sengat (Tetragonula fuscobalteata) terhadap penyembuhan luka bakar pada kulit punggung Rattus norvegicus. Metode yang digunakan merupakan penelitian true experimental menggunakan kelompok kontrol dan eksperimen. Dua puluh lima ekor R. norvegicus dibagi menjadi 5 kelompok: kelompok kontrol negatif diberi etanol 70%, kontrol positif diberi Bioplacenton®, dan 3 kelompok perlakuan ekstrak propolis dengan konsentrasi 50%, 70%, dan 100%. Pengukuran diameter luka bakar dilakukan setiap 2 hari selama 21 hari. Data dianalisa secara statistik menggunakan metode Anova satu arah. Hasil skrining fitokimia ekstrak propolis lebah tanpa sengat positif mengandung senyawa flavonoid, fenolik, tanin, dan saponin. Uji efektivitas ekstrak propolis terhadap luka bakar didapatkan nilai sig 0,00 (< 0,05). Ekstrak propolis lebah tanpa sengat dapat menyembuhkan luka bakar pada R. norvegicus.

ABSTRACT Remek daging (Hemigraphis colorata W.Bull) have been studied and used traditionally for wound healing. This study aimed to determine the effect of topical application of remek daging leaves ethanolic extract 70% on the burn wound. The animals used for this study were 30 rats, divided into five groups, namely 20, 10, 5%  remek daging extract ointment, negative control (vaseline flavum), and positive control (silver sulfadiazine 1%). Histology observations were held on days 3, 7, and 14 after burn wound induction. Histological observations showed an increase number of macrophages, fibroblasts, collagen density, and re-epithelialization in the extract ointment group significantly compare to the negative control (p <0.05). The application of ointment extract 20% to the rats showed comparable results to silver sulfadiazine 1% (p> 0.05). It can be concluded that remek daging ointment extract can accelerate the healing of burn wounds with the best results at a concentration of 20%. Keywords: Hemigraphis colorata, burns, macrophages, fibroblasts, collagen.  ABSTRAK Remek daging (Hemigraphis colorata W.Bull) telah diteliti dan digunakan untuk penyembuhan luka secara tradisional. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh ekstrak etanol 70% daun remek daging secara topikal pada luka bakar tikus putih. Hewan yang digunakan adalah 30 ekor tikus yang dibagi menjadi 5 kelompok yaitu kelompok salep ekstrak daun remek daging 20, 10, 5% (%b/b), kontrol negatif (vaselin flavum) dan kontrol positif (silver sulfadiazine 1% (%b/b)). Pengamatan secara histologi dilakukan pada hari ke 3, 7 dan 14 setelah induksi luka bakar. Pengamatan histologi menunjukkan peningkatan jumlah makrofag, jumlah fibroblas, kepadatan kolagen dan ketebalan re-epitelisasi pada kelompok salep ekstrak daun remek daging secara signifikan dibandingkan kontrol negatif (p<0,05). Tikus yang diberikan perlakuan salep ekstrak 20% menunjukkan hasil sebanding dengan silver sulfadiazin 1% (p>0,05). Dapat disimpulkan bahwa salep ekstrak daun remek daging dapat mempercepat penyembuhan luka bakar dengan hasil terbaik pada konsentrasi 20%. Kata kunci: Hemigraphis colorata, luka bakar, makrofag, fibroblas, kolagen.

The aim of this study was to evaluate burn wound healing activity of coconut shell liquid smoke (CS-LS) in a burn wound animal model. Burn wound–induced mice were treated with CS-LS (CS-LS group), povidone iodine 10% (povidone group), or NaCl 0.9% (NaCl group). Application of CS-LS promoted wound contraction compared to that of the povidone and NaCl groups ( P < .05). This study showed a positive correlation between the number of fibroblasts and wound contraction. The number of fibroblasts was highest in the CS-LS group, compared to that of the povidone and NaCl groups ( P < .05). In conclusion, CS-LS promotes burn wound healing by one possible mechanism, by increasing the number of fibroblasts. The results indicate that further experimental trials are needed to develop CS-LS as an alternative topical drug for burn wound healing.
