Abstract Background Exposure to discrimination can have a negative impact on health. There is little robust evidence on the prevalence of exposure of people with disabilities to discrimination, the sources and nature of discrimination they face, and the personal and contextual factors associated with increased risk of exposure. Methods Secondary analysis of de-identified cross-sectional data from the three waves of the UK’s ‘Life Opportunities Survey’. Results In the UK (i) adults with disabilities were over three times more likely than their peers to be exposed to discrimination, (ii) the two most common sources of discrimination were strangers in the street and health staff and (iii) discrimination was more likely to be reported by participants who were younger, more highly educated, who were unemployed or economically inactive, who reported financial stress or material hardship and who had impairments associated with hearing, memory/speaking, dexterity, behavioural/mental health, intellectual/learning difficulties and breathing. Conclusions Discrimination faced by people with disabilities is an under-recognised public health problem that is likely to contribute to disability-based health inequities. Public health policy, research and practice needs to concentrate efforts on developing programs that reduce discrimination experienced by people with disabilities.

Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF) is a type of infectious disease caused by the dengue virus which is transmitted through the bite of the Aedes Aegypti mosquito. DHF can appear throughout the year and can affect all age groups. Karya Wanita Public Health Center is an endemic area, namely an area that is easily infected by large numbers of diseases, one of which is DHF. Efforts from the government to overcome the transmission of dengue disease by implementing a dengue control program. This control program takes the form of eradicating mosquito nests, epidemiological investigations and focus repetition. This activity has the main objective of reducing morbidity, reducing mortality, and preventing outbreaks of dengue fever. The purpose of this study was to analyze the implementation of the DHF control program at Karya Wanita Public health center Pekanbaru City in 2020. This research is a descriptive qualitative research with a case study approach. The subjects of this study consisted of 1 key informant, namely the Head of the Puskesmas, 2 main informants, namely the DBD Program Holder, a Health Promotion Officer, and 2 supporting informants namely Cadres and the Community. The technique used in this research is in-depth interviews using interview guides and data analysis is done descriptively and presented in narrative form. The results of this study indicate that the implementation of the DHF control program is not optimal, this is due to the lack of funds to implement this program, and also the lack of community participation in carrying out the Mosquito Nest Eradication (PSN) program. It is hoped that the public health center will be able to collaborate with related parties such as the City / Provincial Health Office in funding for all DHF control activities and to further motivate the community to participate in the DHF control process

In view of the widely varying compositions of fixative solutions used for studying spiders, five different fixative formulas were tested for fixing male brown-spider (Loxosceles intermedia) gonad tissues. The brown spider represents a public health problem in Curitiba (Paraná State, Brazil). Morphological study of its gonads may aid in understanding the reproductive strategies of this species, and possibly in developing a reproduction control program. The fixatives tested contained glutaraldehyde alone or combined with paraformaldehyde, and the buffers cacodylate or phosphate, with or without the addition of sucrose or sodium chloride as osmolytes. Those containing 2.5% glutaraldehyde and 2% paraformaldehyde in 100 mM phosphate buffer with 200 mM sucrose, or in 200 mM sodium cacodylate, satisfactorily preserved mitochondria, the Golgi apparatus, and the membranes in general. These formulas were nearly isosmotic (439 mOsm/kg H2O and 455 mOsm/kg H2O respectively) to brown spider hemolymph (478 mOsm/kg H2O). With respective to the fixative agents, a glutaraldehyde-paraformaldehyde combination resulted in optimal fixation of Loxosceles intermedia cells. For other species of spiders, hemolymph osmolality should be considered, but the fixative formulas cited above would also probably yield good results.

The incidence of dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) is still a public health problem in Indonesia. Observations over a period of 20 to 25 years since the beginning of the discovering of the disease, has show the increase of the diseases incidence every five years. The purpose of this study are 1) study the diversity of Aedes’s mosquitoes in Sukabumi City, 2) measure the Aedes population based on the number of eggs and ovitrap index, and 3) to know the correlation between ovitrap index and house condition. Aedes eggs were collected from 14 villages in Sukabumi City that has the highest incidence rate, started from May 2015 until August 2015. Collecting eggs is done by setting a trap eggs (ovitrap) as many as 230 pieces in 115 homes (indoor and outdoor). The results showed that Ae. aegypti were found inside houses and Ae. albopictus were outside houses. The number of eggs collected from ovitrap inside the houses were three times more than those collected from outside. Ovitrap index inside houses was 60%, or 1.6 times more than the ovitrap index outside the houses (37%) in 14 villages in Sukabumi. Houses with poor ventilation and sanitation increased the risk 3.09 times of number of ovitrap index. The results of this study could be use as basic information for the communities to improved environment hygiene through reduced mosquito breeding sites, thus degraded the incidence of dengue

Background. Morocco hopes to eliminate leishmaniases by 2030. These diseases exist in cutaneous and visceral forms and constitute a serious public health problem. The fight against these parasitoses is carried out within the framework of a national program to control leishmaniases, which offers free treatment. However, the screening rate in public health structures does not exceed 35%. Objective. To determine the knowledge and experience of the social actors directly involved in the fight against leishmaniasis to contribute to analyse and understand the factors of this underreporting and to draw scientific recommendations to improve screening and control activities. Methods. Using a self-administered questionnaire, we conducted an exploratory survey during April and May 2019 among all health professionals working in public health structures in the province of ELHajeb in central Morocco. Results. We found that most of the health professionals had good knowledge about the clinical signs of each form of leishmaniasis, but they had erroneous information about the true vector of the disease, the reservoirs, and the mode of transmission. 76% recognized the national leishmaniases control program and only 17% received continuing education. 85% of these professionals focused on the curative aspects of the program. 47% stated that patients do not adhere to the antileishmaniasis treatment, and 25% stated that the population uses the concept of “Hboub of Chniwla” to refer to cutaneous leishmaniasis. Conclusion. The study concluded that the operationalization of the activities of the leishmaniases control program recognizes some weaknesses which explain the underscreening of cases. Improvement of this situation requires the implementation of continuous training programs for caregivers and awareness-raising programs for citizens which should focus on the mode of transmission, preventive measures against reservoirs, sand flies bites, and recognition of lesions using the popular names of the disease as a starting point.
