The literacy program had a positive impact on students, including shaping character, increasing knowledge, developing special talents related to communication and writing, adding experience, building positive relationships between librarians and students, and intellectual recreation. Communication competence in foreign languages was one of the lifelong learning competencies that the school library program did not accommodate. The purpose of this study was to investigate, through fieldwork, a school library as a gathering place for Japanese middle school students. We predicted that students would browse alone, silently. The research used cases studies based on a micro-ethnography method taken from observation data. Data were analyzed from three points of view, informal, public, and gathering, which was referred to as “the third place.” Oldenburg (1989), on which the study was based, focused on the role of bookshelves. We determine that bookshelves provide students with the public place open to all. Second, we suggest that bookshelves serve students as an informal place to spend time alone. Finally, while some students enjoy conversations with friends while among the shelves, others avoid interaction by using the shelves as barriers. Therefore, the bookshelves are not always a gathering place for a students.

The Literature on Information Literacy often assume that there is some inherent relation between Information Literacy and Information Technology and the concept of information literacy has been developed to meet the challenges generated by Information Technology in the form of Information Explosion. Such assumption also reflected in Information Literacy programs which are offered in the academic institutions. This paper argues that the concept of Information Literacy has been in use before the Information Explosion and it should be treated as an ability to understand the intricacies of information, as a tool for lifelong learning and a skill to use information effectively rather than giving more emphasis on technology, which can only make a computer literate who may be expert in using computer, but may not be able to evaluate and use the available information effectively.

In the field of Slovenian school libraries, we join many of those wide spaces of literacies through our international cooperation between schools involving pupils in different multicultural and international activities. For this occasion, we will represent two examples of Empowering Transliteracy in the School Libraries of Slovenia. The first one involves activities of transliteracy in the school curricula by celebrating International School Library Month, which takes place every October. The second example of empowering Transliteracy in the School Library was established in the Elementary School Litija through Erasmus plus activities. Not only do these activities strengthen all levels of competence of modern times, but as we strongly believe, help creating critical readers who will insist on lifelong learning.

There are many school library activities that can be planned and implemented collaboratively with classroom teachers or be designed as library-only activities to build students’ self-confidence, develop responsible citizens, and improve students’ interpersonal skills. A survey was conducted to determine which activities were planned and implemented by twenty school librarians to develop these life skills and to determine four hundred students’ perception of the impact of these activities in the development of these life skills. The findings show that the activities implemented in these school libraries made a positive impact on the target life skills for the majority of students. However, it was discovered that certain important activities were not implemented by some school librarians and that a collaborative approach was not always used in the planning and implementation processes.

For a long time library services of the elementary schools developed slowly due to the deficiency of funds and human resources. The phenomenon is also easily ignored or neglected by the public. The emergence of the blog brings new opportunities for the elementary school libraries with its attributes of low cost, low technique and easy interactions. The purpose of this study is to probe into the blog applied in an information literacy program in elementary school libraries from different perspectives: students’ uses of the blogs ,students’ learning behavior during the program, and opinions of students and the librarian-teacher toward the program.
