The authors present the results of a study of a three-way international collaboration project among one Hungarian class and two classes from Michigan and Washington, respectively. This multifaceted study focused on business planning, web design, and accessibility with the aim of investigating the effect of accessibility instruction on the production of business plans and websites. The distinguishing feature of this study was its emphasis to orient the three student groups on disability and accessibility issues from the perspective of the critical social model of disability advanced by disability studies theorists. The researchers collected quantitative and qualitative pre/postproject survey data from their three classes. They combined this data with the text of student emails sent among the project teams and instructor notes about their teaching to arrive at conclusions about the effectiveness of the collaboration using a mixed-methods approach. The results from the data analyses revealed significant benefit of the client–provider relationships among the three classes and the accessibility instruction provided by the Washington class to the other two classes on the business plans and websites.

Business models have made a breakthrough both in the academic and in business community in the area business development. Old fashioned business plans are in many cases considered as a waste of time and resources. Particularly start-ups and SMEs have a great potential to take advantage of business model approach which allows lean and agile product and service development. However, the existing widely used business model frameworks are lacking the new service logic orientation. They mostly see the world in terms of goods logic. Since all sizes of businesses in all industries are increasingly adopting the service logic or service-dominant logic, there was a clear need to develop a new service logic based business model framework. Based on an extensive empirical study with both practitioners and academics, a new Service Logic Business Model Canvas was developed to fill this need. This chapter explains the theoretical foundations of this framework in SME and start-up context, as well as the framework itself and its application.

Business plan has been one of the most popular management categories in our economy over the last two years. Popularity of business plan has been created from the outside. It is not the result of our managersz belief in its usefulness, but of the creditors request for potential debtors. In that way, business plan is becoming the main negotiating tool in providing financial resources for expanding capacities of the existing firms or start-ups. Creating business plans with this purpose only poses the biggest threat to its implementation. For these reasons, the concept, purposes and business planning process are also presented.

The Tier 2 Program of the Project P.A.T.H.S. (Positive Adolescent Training through Holistic Social Programmes) is designed for adolescents with significant psychosocial needs, and its various programs are designed and implemented by social workers (program implementers) for specific student groups in different schools. Using subjective outcome evaluation data collected from the program participants (Form C) at 207 schools, the program implementers were asked to aggregate data and write down five conclusions (n = 1,035) in their evaluation reports. The conclusions stated in the evaluation reports were further analyzed via secondary data analyses in this study. Results showed that the participants regarded the Tier 2 Program as a success, and was effective in enhancing self-understanding, interpersonal skills, and self-management. They liked the experiential learning approach and activities that are novel, interesting, diversified, adventure-based, and outdoor in nature. They also liked instructors who were friendly, supportive, well-prepared, and able to bring challenges and give positive recognition. Most of the difficulties encountered in running the programs were related to time constraints, clashes with other activities, and motivation of participants. Consistent with the previous evaluation findings, the present study suggests that the Tier 2 Program was well received by the participants and that it was beneficial to the development of the program participants.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to establish the main causes of early failure of small recently established fundraising charities. Design/methodology/approach – Heads and ex-heads of small recently established British charities that had either shut down within two years of registration with the Charity Commission or had survived for two years following registration were surveyed to determine the sorts of issue they believed were particularly problematic at the time their charities were formed or shortly thereafter. The research combined ideas from human capital theory, organisational ecology, and the survivor principle to investigate the mortality of new charity start-ups. Information was obtained from the ex-heads of 182 charities that had been removed from the Charity Commission’s register and from 356 heads of charities that were still in operation. Findings – Participants in both groups reported that they had experienced major difficulties relating to funding, the development of plans, lack of marketing and management skills, and personal workload. Differences between the groups emerged with respect to their perceptions of problems involving competition from other charities (both for donations and for clients), internal conflict within their organisations, networking, and the need for background research. Start-ups run by people with prior experience of working in charities had a significantly better chance of survival than start-ups managed by individuals lacking such experience. Research limitations/implications – The data used in the investigation were self-reported and less than a majority of the sampling frame participated in the study. Practical implications – Prospective founders of small new charities need to recognise competitive realities and the competencies required for success before commencing operations. Government and nonprofit support organisations should arrange short work experience placements and shadowing activities for individuals contemplating starting a new charity. Originality/value – This was the first research ever to examine reasons for small enterprise collapse within the nonprofit domain.

The development of student entrepreneurship at the University of Kanjuruhan Malang is starting to show results. This is very supportive of government programs in their development in line with increasing economic growth. Furthermore, it has an impact on student entrepreneurial actors to be more creative and innovative in effective marketing strategic planning. Most entrepreneurial students have difficulty developing because they do not understand how to market a product effectively, display product packaging attractively so that it has high selling value and manages their business well. On this occasion, we aim to provide solutions through the Entrepreneurship Development Program of the University of Kanjuruhan Malang which collaborates with micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in Malang City and Regency, in the form of a digital marketing strategy, namely e-commerce. The method we use in this activity is conducting workshops by forming student groups according to their target products and market reach, and providing assistance to these student groups. The investment that we provide is in the form of e-commerce applications. The results of the investment show a significant change in marketing among entrepreneurial students at Kanjuruhan University of Malang.
