Abstract The aim of the study was to assess the atrioventricular conduction in the model of porcine pacing induced tachycardiomyopathy. Fifty-one swine were examined: 27 were paced and 24 served as a control group. Every 4 weeks, the animals were anaesthetised for 1 h and an ECG Holter was performed. Thirty minutes after the onset of anaesthesia, P-R and R-R intervals were measured. Each result was assigned to the subgroup according to the animal’s weight and the presence or absence of previous pacing. P-R interval was longer in animals after at least 4 weeks of rapid ventricular stimulation than in adjusted group of the animals according to the body mass. Multivariate analysis has showed that longer P-R interval was related to male gender, higher body mass, slower heart rate, and history of previous pacing. Chronic ventricular pacing led to the slowing of atrioventricular conduction. The presence of differences in the duration of R-R intervals between groups was only found in swine weighing 120-139 kg. The R-R interval was shorter in paced animals, whereas PR interval was longer in that group, indicating that PR prolongation is related to electrical or structural remodelling of the cardiac conductive tissue but not increased sympathetic nervous system activity, which is expected to produce corresponding changes in PR and R-R intervals.

Summary Background: It has been reported that obesity is associated with metabolic syndrome, insulin resistance, cardiovascular risk but also with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). The prevalence of obesity in children and adolescents is increasing rapidly all over the world. The aim of this study was to analyze the value of liver enzymes: AST, ALT and γGT in a group of obese students in order to establish their correlation to anthropometric parameters such as: BMI (body mass index), WC (waist circumference), HC (hip circumference), and WHR (waist-to-hip ratio) compared to non-obese students who comprised the control group (CG). Methods: In this study, 238 students from the University of Novi Sad of both sexes (126 men and 112 women) with a mean age of 22.32 ± 1.85 years were included. According to the body mass index (BMI) lower and higher than 25 kg/m2 and waist circumference (WC) lower and higher than 94 cm (80 cm for females) the whole group of 238 students was divided into 2 subgroups: the obese group at increased risk for CVD (Group 1) and the group at lower risk for CVD (Group 2). AST, ALT and γGT activities were determined in fasting blood samples. Results: Statistical processing data revealed significantly higher values of AST, ALT and γGT in the group of students with BMI>25 kg/m2, WC>94 cm for males and WC>80 cm for females, HC>108 cm for males and HC>111 cm for females, and WHR>0.90 for males and WHR>0.80 for females (P<0.001). Significant association was established between anthropometric parameters and liver enzyme levels (P<0.0001). Conclusions: Obese students with higher BMI, WC, HC and WHR values have higher liver enzyme activites and a higher chance to develop NAFLD in the future.

AbstractWeight gain during interpregnancy period is related to hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP). However, in interpregnancy care/counseling, the unpredictability of the timing of the next conception and the difficulties in preventing age-related body weight gain must be considered while setting weight management goals. Therefore, we suggest considering the annual change in the body mass index (BMI). This study aimed to clarify the association between annual BMI changes during the interpregnancy period and HDP risk in subsequent pregnancies. A multicenter retrospective study of data from 2009 to 2019 examined the adjusted odds ratio (aOR) of HDP in subsequent pregnancies. The aORs in several annual BMI change categories were also calculated in the subgroups classified by HDP occurrence in the index pregnancy. This study included 1,746 pregnant women. A history of HDP (aOR, 16.76; 95% confidence interval [CI], 9.62 − 29.22), and annual BMI gain (aOR, 2.30; 95% CI, 1.76 − 3.01) were independent risk factors for HDP in subsequent pregnancies. An annual BMI increase of ≥ 1.0 kg/m2/year was related to HDP development in subsequent pregnancies for women without a history of HDP. This study provides data as a basis for interpregnancy care/counseling, but further research is necessary to validate our findings and confirm this relationship.

A total of 11 cases of red man syndrome collected among 650 children who had received vancomycin in our hospital between 1986 and 1988 (estimated prevalence 1.6%) were retrospectively analyzed. These 11 children were compared with 11 age-matched children who received vancomycin in whom red man syndrome did not develop. Of the patients with red man syndrome, 73%, and of the patients with no reaction, 45.4% received vancomycin for penicillin-resistant Staphylococcus epidermidis-positive cultures, or because of history of penicillin allergy. No difference was observed in the dose per kilogram given to both groups (12.9 ± 3.5 mg/kg per dose in those with red man syndrome vs 12.3 ± 6.9 mg/kg per dose in control childrens. The duration (mean ± standard deviation) of vancomycin infusion was 45.9 ± 16.7 minutes (range 10 to 90 minutes) in patients with red man syndrome and 54.5 ± 7.6 minutes (range 45 to 65 minutes) in the control group (P = .07). In the 5 children with red man syndrome rechallenged with vancomycin, slower infusion rates prevented or reduced the syndrome, which emphasized the fact that the rate of administration is the important determinant of red man syndrome in susceptible cases. Clinically, the syndrome developed at the end of the infusion in most patients, but appeared as early as 15 minutes after initiation of the infusion. It was mostly manifested as a flushed, erythematous rash on the face, neck, and around the ears. Less frequently, the rash was distributed all over the body. Pruritus was usually localized to the upper trunk but was also generalized (2 of 11 children). Associated signs and symptoms were hypotension, watery puffy eyes, tachycardia, respiratory distress, dizziness, agitation, and mild temperature increase. A premature infant with the red man syndrome had skin rash associated with poor perfusion, cold extremities, increased need for oxygen, and severe hypotension. The rash disappeared within 20 minutes (range 5 minutes to 7 hours) after vancomycin infusion was stopped. There was no association between serum vancomycin concentrations and red man syndrome; in both groups of patients therapeutic as well as subtherapeutic concentrations were observed, suggesting that this is an idiosyncratic and not a concentration-dependent phenomenon.

BACKGROUND: The most common cause of female infertility is ovulation disorders, and the most common non-ovulatory cause is polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). AIM: The aim of the study was to define the reproductive hormone levels in women with infertility due to PCOS, depending on the body mass index (BMI). PATIENTS AND METHODS: The present study involved 100 women aged 25–39 years with infertility due to PCOS (PCOS group) and 30 women of the same age with infertility due to tubal-peritoneal causes (control group). Infertility due to PCOS was diagnosed according to the Rotterdam criteria. Hormone levels (anti-Müllerian [AMH], follicle-stimulating [FSH], luteinizing [LH], prolactin, estradiol, and testosterone) in blood serum were determined by ELISA. RESULTS: We detected a correlation between BMI and sex hormone levels as well as LH/FSH ratio. Notably, the ratio of LH/FSH in women with PCOS was significantly different compared to the control group, while at the same time, PCOS was significantly more frequent in overweight and obese patients compared to those with normal BMI. For instance, the LH/FSH ratio was 30.35% higher in women with Class 2 obesity than in the group of women with normal weight. However, in women with both PCOS and Class 3 obesity, the LH/FSH ratio was the lowest among those with a BMI of 25.0-39.9. CONCLUSIONS: We found a hormonal imbalance in women with infertility caused by PCOS: Increased levels of AMH and LH, estradiol, and testosterone and decreased FSH levels. Analysis of the relationship between the concentration of reproductive hormones and BMI showed a weak inverse relationship between BMI with FSH levels, as well as a direct correlation with the levels of LH, prolactin, estradiol, and testosterone, and LH/FSH ratio. Thus, obesity exacerbates the hormonal imbalance in women with infertility caused by PCOS.

Contemporary anthropological research confirms the fact that body composition is one of the basic elements differentiating athletes from persons not practising sport. Among athletes representing various branches of sport there are also significant differences in their body composition. Internal proportions of the body composition of an athlete, or a selected group of athletes, is an especially important yet little researched issue of sports anthropology. This problem is still topical in sports games, especially in tennis. Therefore, the aim of the study was to determine internal proportions of the body composition of female tennis players from the Polish national team in comparison to persons who do not practice sport professionally. The study involved female athletes of the Polish national tennis team (n = 10). The study was carried out in a training camp from 28 September to 9 October 2002 in Zakopane — Centre of Sports Preparation. Athletes’ age was 16—20 (18.1 ± 1.4) years, and the training experience 8—12 years (10.5 ± 1.8). The mean body height for the group members was 171.9 ± 6.7 cm and the mean body mass 59.7 ± 6.3 kg. The results of research by Piechaczek et al. (1996) constituted the reference point for the results of measurements of Polish tennis representatives. The authors studied 153 female students of Warsaw Technical University aged 20.2 ± 1.09 years. They were randomly chosen students of the first and the second year of various departments at this university. The mean body height of the students was 166.2 ± 6.2 cm and the mean body mass 57.4 ± 7.72 kg. Anthropometric measurements were taken using standard instruments (Drozdowski, 1998). The analysis involved 11 somatic features which determined three so-called factors of body composition: length (m1), stoutness (m2) and obesity (m3). The assessment of proportions of the body composition was made by means of Perkal’s natural indices (1953) with Milicerowa’s modifications (1956). We determined the following: composition factors (m), index of total body size (M), internal proportions of the body composition, evenness of composition, the code of internal proportions; also the assessment of internal proportions of the body composition within each of the factors.Taking into consideration the mean values of the studied somatic features in the control group and the comparative group we found differences in their body composition. The representatives of the Polish national tennis team showed substantially longer upper and lower limbs, and the body height was greater. They also had much greater forearm perimeter and shorter pelvic width. As to the total body size, the tennis players slightly exceeded the students (M = 0.24). The total body size (M) resulted from high values of length features (m1 = 1.01), low ones of stoutness (m2 = –0.39) and medium ones of obesity (m3 = 0.1). The value of the intragroup variability index (harmony of composition) amounted to 1.4 and the code of internal proportions of tennis players’ body composition — to 6—2—4. The proportions of internal features of the stoutness index (natural indices of features within a factor) showed the advantage of the forearm perimeter (1.62) and elbow width (0.36). The knee width (–1.30) and pelvic width (–0.60) were disproportionate to the total value of this factor. The input of features characterizing the length factor was relatively proportional. Keywords: tennis, training, body composition, internal proportions.

Sport is regularly seen as one of the forms of activation of the body that provide motor skills and contribute to healthy health, however it is important to appreciate it from the point of view of knowledge, so its contribution in aspects of academic competencies in students was analyzed upper middle level. In the first part, the history of sport was discussed, as well as the contributions of authors about educational sport and the learning generated. Subsequently, a comparison was made in young upper-middle-level students divided into two groups: the experiential group (they practice and perform exercise, sport and physical activity) and the control group (individuals who are totally sedentary), in order to observe performance. in school performance, class participation, decision making as well as knowing how influential or manipulable their peers can be to analyze and solve problems, in the study a questionnaire was applied to both groups using the Likert scale to know these results. The information obtained shows the positive influence that sport has on the development of educational capacities in students.

Aim. To evaluate the effectiveness of the developed special sports complex in the prevention of hypodynamia and obesity among firefighters-rescuers.Materials and methods. A survey of 490 men with no history of chronic infectious and non-infectious diseases aged 20-59 was conducted. 328 people were the main group, 162 people were the control group. The baseline data included anthropometric development indicators, bioimpedance test results, the extraction of biochemical blood test results; the body mass index (BMI) and the ratio of waist and hip circumference were determined. A questionnaire was conducted to identify hypodynamia (according to the IPAQ questionnaire) and the nutrition structure (according to the questionnaire on the food label literacy questionnaire, past). Both questionnaires were adapted to the Russian Federation. Statistica for Windows 8.0 was used for statistical processing. We used a comparison of the means of the Student method. To compare the values expressed in percent, the method of inverse trigonometric Fisher transformations was used.Results. We have developed and proposed for firefighters-rescuers, included in the main group, special sports complexes, which were used for 6 months. These complexes represent additional physical training by the developed method. There are two of them: one with an emphasis on the prevention and rehabilitation of people with osteochondrosis of the lumbar spine, and the other for cervical and thoracic localization, including with a syndrome of shoulder-scapular periarthritis.Classes were held 3 times a week, the duration of 1 session was 45-50 minutes. The choice of the complex was carried out at the request of firefighters-rescuers. The first complex was selected by 52 people. Based on the results of the study, against the background of the use of sports complexes, there was a 2-fold decrease in the incidence of obesity. Such a high efficiency is due to the fact that obesity of the I degree prevailed among the firefighters-rescuers. In addition, the frequency of occurrence of dyslipidemia, hyperglycemia, and hypodynamia decreased.Conclusion. The use of this sports complex can reduce the risk factors for development of disability among rescue firefighters by preventing hypodynamia and reducing the incidence of hyperglycemia and dyslipidemia, as factors in the development of obesity.

The aim of this study was to describe the effects of nickel (NiCl2) on murine testicular structure. Experimental animals were injected intraperitoneally with a single dose of 20 mg NiCl2 per kg of body mass (group A, n = 5) and 40 mg NiCl2 per kg b. m. (group B, n = 5). The group without injection (n = 5) was the control (C). Animals were killed 48 hours after administration of nickel. The body mass of animals, the mass of testes and the testes : body mass ratio were not significantly affected. In both experimental groups a significant (p < 0.001) decrease of germinal epithelium in comparison with control group was observed. The relative volume of the interstitium was increased but not significantly in both experimental groups. An increase in the relative volume of the lumen was registered in both experimental groups in comparison with the control group. The qualitative analysis detected a dilatation of blood vessels in the interstitium, undulation of the basal membrane and several empty spaces in the germinal epithelium. The diameter (n = 150) of the seminiferous tubule was markedly (p < 0.05) decreased in both experimental groups (A, B) compared to control group. The height of the germinal epithelium showed a significant decrease (p < 0.05 - 0.001) after nickel administration. Evaluation of the lumen diameter in the seminiferous tubule showed a significant increase in both experimental groups. The data of the perimeter of seminiferous tubules corresponded with those of the seminiferous tubule diameter. TUNEL assay detected a higher frequency of localized apoptosis in the interstitium of nickel-administered animals compared to control group. Our findings clearly suggest a negative effect of nickel on the structure as well as on the function of the seminferous epithelium at the site of spermatozoa production.

Objective: This study aims at examining the body composition of male football players who perform regular football training by Bioelectrical Impedance (BIA) method and comparing it with a healthy control group and investigating the effect of regular exercise on body composition.Materials and Methods: A total of 60 people participated in the study, including 30 volunteer male football players performing football trainings regularly from 11 Nisan Football Club playing in Turkey Football Federation Regional Amateur League (BAL) and 30 healthy volunteer control group consisting of male students from Harran University Medical Faculty. Both groups’ ages and body mass indexes are similar to each other.  Bioelectrical Impedance (BIA) method was used for Osseosis, skeletal muscle weight (SMM), body mass index (BMI), body fat percentage (BFP), waist hip ratio (WHR), and basal metabolism parameters of the participants. The data obtained were evaluated with SPSS 23.0 statistical package program, and the significance level was evaluated as p < 0.01 and p < 0.05.Findings: There was no statistically significant difference between the values of age, height, weight, intracellular fluid, extracellular fluid, protein, mineral, skeletal muscle weight (SMM), body mass index (BMI) and muscle ratios of the experimental and control groups (p > 0.05). When the parameters of basal metabolism, Osseosis and skeletal muscle weight of the experimental group were discussed, no significant relationship was detected, although they were high numerically (p > 0.05). It was determined that the body fat percentage (BFP) of the experimental and control groups was correlated at p < 0.01 level and waist-hip ratio was correlated (WHR) at p < 0.05 level, which was statistically significant. As a result, although there was no significant difference between BMI values between the football players and the control group, the fact that the players' lower BMI values and lower waist-hip ratios showed that regular training reduces the risk of developing chronic diseases.
