Since the end of the 1980s Indonesia’s property business has been growing rapidly, especially in Jakarta. The growth has transformed green open space gradually to commercial uses. Along with that, there has also been a social shift in Jakarta and its satellite cities. Citizen maximizes their earnings from working at the office and trading in order to maintain (and upgrade) their welfare. As a result, their leisure time (including enjoying the park) worn off. Taman Spot Budaya Dukuh Atas (TDA) has been a Jakarta provincial government’s solution to such issues, i.e decreasing number of parks and open spaces, and the limited time available to enjoy them. A review in user appreciation, adaptation to current and upcoming trends, and its compatibility as public space and third space will be a benchmark for modern public space development. This study applies a qualitative research approach with a case study method. TDA proves to be one of the people’s option to hang out at public space, especially in a crowded city district. TDA also fulfilled public space, third space, and Jakarta government’s goals. But better maintenance and improvement are needed to ensure its sustainability. The concept of public space that can be enjoyed in a short time are expected to be replicated to several other crowd points in Jakarta and other major cities in the future. Keywords: Dukuh Atas; green open space; user appreciation; modern public space AbstrakSejak akhir 1980-an bisnis properti berkembang pesat di Indonesia, khususnya di Jakarta.

A number of socio-psychological factors cause accessibility problems of public open spaces such as parks and playground. However, for ensuring a healthy urban life, some open spaces are essential as taking breath to give a child some fresh air, a little scope of giving the chance of playing. A public open space becomes successful only when it is accessible to each and every person of society. Accessibility is now not only the concept based on the close proximity but also the most important concern for people to make any open space successful with its purpose. Class dynamics and public versus place dichotomy are creating all the possible changes of accessibility condition at any public space. Since this study tries to focus on public accessibility rather than place accessibility, all factors like social, economic, cultural and environmental factors for creating inaccessibility and prohibiting people from using the open space have been identified and analyzed in detail. Factors like social, economic, cultural and environmental factors are responsible for deciding a person’s decision to use an open space. This research is an attempt to find out all the prohibiting factors that influence a person to go a community open space.

The use of outdoor (open) spaces in public buildings is vast and has significant roles ranging from individual (users) perception of the development of urban centers and cities to the satisfaction of the various functions they perform. However, little research is available on the use of the outdoor spaces in these Public buildings environment and the activities that take place thereof. This study investigates the factors that take users of public buildings to the outdoor environment and the physical factors that constitute their uses within the spaces. Using both qualitative and quantitative research approach, the paper examined the importance of restructuring the outdoor spaces for quality of the surrounding of the built environment. The study adopts a purposive sampling where participants were selected based on the outdoor use only. A total of seventy (75) questionnaires were administered to the various users of public buildings within specific open spaces. Only seventy (70) representing (93.33%) of the total population were returned and subjected to data analysis using the relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, Mean Weighted Score (MWS) and Relatively Important Index (R.I.I) were used to rank features obtained. The study concludes that proper restructuring of landscape elements is necessary within public buildings, in order to provide human comfort, well-being and improved productivity. It was recommended that revitalizing the environmental features of these public building necessitates the insufficiency of outdoor features in government own buildings. Therefore, the user’s satisfaction of this outdoor (open) space in public buildings should be key consideration and emphasized on right from planning and design stages to it implementation.

Urban open spaces (e.g. urban parks) play a pivotal role in improving the quality of life of city dwellers through accommodating various physical and social activities, while further creating social coherence for sustainable development. Due to the shortage of open green spaces in the city, caused by rapid urbanization in developing countries, some big, long-standing urban public spaces such as district parks have been retained, and improved to serve as the main public space for local people. However, such spaces commonly provide outdated, low quality facilities that discourage people from using the park. To satisfy users’ needs, local governments have launched campaigns to improve parks based on the ideas of domestic or foreign designers. The purpose of this research is to explore different behaviors of residents in an open space in Da Nang (Vietnam) which can support the future development and improvement of local open space in accordance with environmental behavior theory. User behaviors were identified and categorized based on their activities in the open space, collected using the place-centered behavior mapping method. Results of the statistical analysis revealed that this open space could be divided into three types, each of which had four dimensions: public facilities setting; openness; accessibility; and recreational facilities. The findings showed some aspects that need to be considered during the development process of open space as follows: 1) increasing the quantity and quality of public amenities; 2) separating accessible space and/or buffer space from already used space inside the park, particularly in the entrance zone; 3) providing space adjacent to the lake; and 4) removing obstacles (e.g. walls around the park) to give a clearer view from inside the park to the streets outside and vice versa. Also, the calculation model of evidence-based designs provides input data for re-planning or creating public space/parks to help designers, planners and authorities improve or design better open spaces in the future.

With one of the highest population densities in the world, Hong Kong suffers from a lack of public open space. Despite this situation, open spaces provided by government authorities or private developers often do not meet residents’ needs or include residents in the planning and design process. To explore one way that this issue is being addressed, this chapter describes an ongoing placemaking project within Hong Kong’s interstitial network of laneways (里) and alleys (巷). The key historical, sociocultural, and physical features, opportunities, and constraints of these in-between spaces are discussed. This is followed by an in-depth exploration of the case study Magic Lanes, a pilot project that aims to provide more inclusive public open spaces through placemaking and community co-creation.

G-level open space is an effective way to create more open space for public congregation and community life in densely populated cities like Chong Qing, and compact neighborhoods like NFHY. One prototype for modern G-level open space of NFHY was the traditional housing in southeast China; the other was the worldwide modern architectural movement, especially Le Corbusie’s work. Compared to other kinds of open space, G-level open space is distinctive in its dualism; it has the qualities of both interior space and public space. Findings in NFHY show that, with it peculiar space quality, G-level open space integrated private life and public life, making the space more attractive to the residents, especially seniors and children. In order to encourage the developers to incorporate more of this kind of open space in their projects, the government needs to make some compromise on building regulations.

Abstract: Public open spaces are spaces that can be accessed for free and can accommodate a variety of peoples and activities. Therefore, both if in each residential area or at a certain radius there is at least one public open space, no exception in urban villages with a characteristic population density that has become the root of settlement culture in Indonesia. This research then took a case study in one of the villages in the city of Yogyakarta, namely Kampung Gampingan, which despite entering into a slum arrangement according to Mayor Decree Number 216 Year 2016, but still has one existing public open space that still exists utilized by residents around every day, both by children until adults. Related to these findings, this study was conducted as a basic study whose results can be used as a foundation for the arrangement of slums in the future. In its design, public open space must also pay attention to the times and various aspects and needs for the convenience of its users. Although comfort is very difficult to define, at least comfort can be assessed through people's preferences through the responsiveness of each individual. For this reason, through a qualitative-exploratory method using a questionnaire filled out by users of public open spaces in Kampung Gampingan, this study aims to find citizens' preferences for aspects of the comfort of public open spaces based on comfort theory; what matters that must be prioritized or must be avoided in the design for the creation of the convenience of citizens. From this study it was found that in order to achieve the comfort of a public open space, aspects of governance needed include cleanliness, safety, circulation, shape / dimension, noise, lighting, smell, natural/ climate power, and supporting facilities such as the free internet access, parks, CCTV, drink water, trash cans, streetlights, children's games, and furniture.

On the last Accounting National Symposium at Banjarmasin, a quantitative accounting research approach was still dominating in the paper presentation, eventhough this event had been conducted more than a decade. So, why the quantitative approach or positive paradigm is still strong enough in its position and having a good track of development during the penetration of a qualitative approach? By understanding the positivist accounting researcher’s thought about qualitative approach, a gap could be seen and then used for developing both approaches simultaneously. This research is on the area of an interpretive paradigm and using case study method. By using in-depth interview, data are collected from informan at Gadjah Mada University, Brawijaya University, and Airlangga University. The results, all informan accept the qualitative approach or a multiparadigm accounting research with a certain note, especially regarding to the research stages. Besides, they think about the need for a dialogue between quantitative and qualitative researchers.
