AbstractBasically, a human is a social being that needs to have interaction one and another. Kwitang as one of the busiest and most densely populated areas in Jakarta As a result, basic human needs that are not met causes the people in the Kwitang area to have a business in front of their homes. However, nowadays people getting to be more individualistic because of their business and routine. They easily forget the importance of their social life and taking care of themselves. It makes the needs of existence the Third Place higher in society. The existence of the third becomes a solution for people to escape from their routine and have a better social life. Considering the problems and potency in the area, Literature Park and Activity Hub is designed to accommodate and solve people’s problems by trying to meet the basic needs of the community such as socialization and mutual relations between people and become a character in the form of selling books. The program will be processed in the form of a method approached with observation and survey then starting from location analysis until product of architechture. Using Form runs Together, and cross programming method, and also design method in the form of continuity and welcoming space on the project. So the conclution is the design of this building could provide a third space in Kelurahan Kwitang so humans can interact to help the process of socialization between humans and their environment. Therefore, this project and concept could be implemented and create the Third Place in Kwitang.AbstrakPada dasarnya masyarakat adalah makhluk sosial yang membutuhkan interaksi antar sesama. Kawasan Kwitang merupakan salah satu kawasan permukiman yang padat dan sibuk di Jakarta. Akibatnya kebutuhan dasar manusia yang tidak terpenuhi menyebabkan masyarakat pada kawasan Kwitang memiliki usaha di depan rumah masing-masing. Muncullah sikap individualis karena kesibukan dan rutinitasnya yang kadang membuat mereka lupa akan pentingnya bersosialisasi dan beristirahat dari kesibukannya, karena ruang pada kawasan sedikit bagi mereka untuk melakukan kegiatan selain rutinitas seperti untuk bersosialisasi atau melakukan hubungan timbal balik. sebagaimana tentu membutuhkan kehadiran ruang ketiga yang dapat menjadi solusi untuk masyarakat melepas penat dari rutinitasnya dan saling bersosialisasi antar sesama. Dari beragam potensi dan masalah yang ada, Wadah aktivitas dan taman bacaan masyarakat bertujuan mampu mengakomodasi atau mewadahi aktivitas masyarakat dengan berusaha memenuhi kebutuhan dasar masyarakat seperti sosialisasi dan hubungan timbal balik antar orang dan menjadi karakter kawasan yang berupa penjualan buku-bukunya. Kwitang dengan pendekatan metode tahap observasi dan survei kemudian pada tahap perancangan dimulai dari analisis lokasi serta potensi konsep desain bangunan sampai hasil akhir berupa bangunan. Program diolah dengan metode form and function runs together, dan cross programming serta metode desain berupa kontinuitas dan welcoming space pada proyek. Kesimpulan pada proyek bangunan ini dengan berusaha memberikan ruang ketiga pada Kelurahan Kwitang agar manusia dapat berinteraksi, dan timbal balik antar manusia maupun dengan lingkungannya. Wadah aktivitas dan taman bacaan di Kwitang ini dapat diterapkan dalam menghasilkan sebuah 3rd Place pada sebuah kawasan.

The conflict between the two social understandings between individualism and collectivism does not need to be clashed, but instead it needs to be managed according to values, morals and ethics. So that it can become a social force for social life. In this issue, architects can play a role in cultivating a 'space' that is fit to the problem of individualism-collectivism. The research method used is a comparative and synergistic method. Literature in the form of journals and books on the phenomenon of individualism-collectivism is used as a reference and comparison. To be able to change a person's attitude, it is necessary to have an environmental role that creates events and events that occur repeatedly and continuously, gradually being absorbed into the individual and influencing the formation of an attitude. In order for this approach to be applied easily, this approach must be applied to basic human needs. In basic human needs there is a hierarchy of the most basic, namely physiological needs, the most basic needs to be fulfilled because they include things that are vital for survival, namely, clothing, food, and shelter. So in order to answer this issue, the vertical housing function is fixed. In addition, vertical housing is considered important because it responds to limited land and the increasing human population. Vertical housing with a collaborative space in grouped dwelling unit concept, because offers many possibilities, from people who live together sharing physical space to communities that share values, interests and philosophies of life. Grouping system is also be an important value and in community prefer to live in small community amount 4-10 members with various background. Consisted by good quality personal space and supporting facilities to develop self-potential as self-actualization. Keywords:  collaborative; collectivism; individualism; monodualism; self actualization Abstrak Konflik dua paham sosial antara individualisme dengan kolektivisme tidak perlu dibenturkan, tetapi justru perlu dikelola menurut nilai-nilai, moral, dan etika, sehingga dapat menjadi kekuatan sosial bagi kehidupan bermasyarakat. Dalam isu ini, arsitek dapat berperan dalam mengolah ‘ruang’ yang fit terhadap permasalahan individualisme-kolektivisme. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah metode komparatif dan sinergis. Literatur berupa jurnal dan buku tentang fenomena individualisme-kolektivisme, dijadikan sebagai acuan dan pembanding. Untuk dapat mengubah sikap seseorang diperlukan peran lingkungan untuk menciptakan kejadian-kejadian dan peristiwa-peristiwa yang terjadi berulang-ulang dan terus-menerus, lama-kelamaan secara bertahap diserap kedalam diri individu dan memengaruhi terbentuknya suatu sikap. Agar pendekatan ini dapat diterapkan dengan mudah maka pendekatan ini harus diterapkan pada kebutuhan dasar manusia. Pada kebutuhan dasar manusia terdapat hierarki yang paling dasar yaitu kebutuhan fisiologis (physiological needs), kebutuhan yang paling dasar untuk dipenuhi karena meliputi hal-hal yang vital bagi kelangsungan hidup yaitu, sandang, pangan, dan papan. Sehingga untuk menjawab isu ini, ditetapkan fungsi hunian vertikal. Selain itu, hunian vertikal dinilai penting karena untuk mejawab keterbatasan lahan dan semakin tingginya populasi manusia. Hunian vertikal dengan mengusung konsep ruang kolaboratif pada setiap unit hunian yang dikelompokkan, karena menawarkan banyak kemungkinan, mulai dari orang-orang yang tinggal bersama dengan berbagi ruang fisik hingga komunitas yang juga berbagi nilai, minat, dan filosofi hidup. Sistem pengelompokan penghuni juga menjadi nilai penting dan dalam komunitas lebih menyukai jumlah yang sedikit 4-10 orang dengan latar belakang yang berbeda. Ditunjang dengan kualitas ruang pribadi yang baik dan fasilitas penunjang yang dapat mengembangkan potensi sebagai bentuk aktualisai diri.

It is commonly known that in this present days technology has been heavily linked with daily life with various affects. These influences has made basic human needs also changed functionally. For example the existence of smartphone has become one of the most crucial thing on supporting daily life activities. Smartphones are only 1 of the various types of gadgets (devices) that have specific functions for users for the sake of facilitating their activities. The existence of gadgets slowly over time began to change into one of the primary needs of millennial society today. A concrete example that we can see is the ease of transportation, transactions, and interacting with the help of smartphone usage. Not only in terms of practical functions, gadget technology also has functions of entertainment & hobbies such as digital cameras, drones, game consoles, 3D printing, etc. Based on concrete statements and phenomena of human civilization now, the existence of the gadget trend center is considered important. And also based on a design method that discusses data and analysis of weaknesses and strength of site locations and approved programs, the Jakarta Gadget Trend Center is produced. This project is designed to have the maximum level of space efficiency and has a contextual response to the style and topography of the area in the form of mass, interior, and facade. AbstrakSudah diketahui secara umum bahwa di masa kini teknologi sudah melekat dengan kehidupan sehari - hari masyarakat umum dengan pengaruh yang beragam. Pengaruh tersebut membuat kebutuhan dasar manusia juga berubah secara fungsional. Contohnya keberadaan smartphone atau ponsel pintar menjadi benda paling krusial dalam mendukung kemudahan dan kelancaran beraktivitas sehari - hari. Smartphone hanya 1 dari sekian jenis gadget (gawai) yang memiliki fungsi tertentu bagi penggunanya untuk kepentingan yang memudahkan kegiatan mereka. Keberadaan gadget perlahan seiring berjalannya waktu mulai berubah menjadi salah satu kebutuhan primer masyarakat milenial kini. Contoh konkrit yang dapat kita lihat fenomenanya adalah kemudahan bertransportasi, bertransaksi, dan berinteraksi dengan penggunaan smartphone. Bukan hanya dari segi fungsi praktis, teknologi gadget juga memiliki fungsi entertainment & hobby seperti kamera digital, drone, game console, 3D printing, dsb. Berdasarkan pernyataan dan fenomena konkrit dari peradaban manusia kini, keberadaan pusat tren gawai dirasa penting. Dengan berbasis metode perancangan yang mengacu pada data dan analisis mengenai kelemahan dan kelebihan lokasi tapak maupun program yang disarankan, maka dihasilkanlah Jakarta Gadget Trend Center. Proyek ini didesain untuk memiliki tingkat efisiensi ruang semaksimal mungkin dan memiliki respons kontekstual terhadap langgam serta topografi kawasan dalam bentukan massa, interior, maupun fasad.

AbstractThe main problem in this research  how to find out about the form and function of personal references in the novel Rembulan Tenggelam di Wajahmu in order to determine the differences contained in the novel especially those on personal references contained therein. This research was a literature review of research that contains one topic that contains some ideas or propositions related and must be supported by the data obtained from literature sources. This research procedure included planning, action and analysis. Subjects in this study was the novel of  Rembulan Tenggelam di Wajahmu. The results showed that the observation of novel moon sinking in the face are analyzed on personal references indicate that there are a lot of words including personal references such as personal pronoun first (referring to himself), pronouns second person (referring to the speaker) , and the third person pronoun (which refers to the person in question). Based on these results above, it can be concluded that the words include references persona there are differences both in writing and in speech.Keywords: Novel, personal referencesAbstrakMasalah utama dalam penelitian ini yaitu bagaimana mengetahui tentang bentuk dan fungsi referensi personal di dalam novel Rembulan Tenggelam di Wajahmu dengan tujuan untuk mengetahui perbedaan yang terdapat di dalam novel tersebut terkhusus pada referensi personal yang terdapat di dalamnya. Jenis penelitian ini adalah penelitian kajian pustaka yang berisi satu topik yang memuat beberapa gagasan atau proposisi yang berkaitan dan harus didukung oleh data yang diperoleh dari sumber pustaka. Prosedur penelitian ini meleputi perencanaan, pelaksanaan tindakan, dan analisis. Subjek dalam penelitian ini adalah novel rembulan tenggelam di wajahmu. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa pada pengamatan terhadap novel rembulan tenggelam di wajahmu yang menganalisis tentang referensi personal menunjukkan bahwa terdapat banyak kata-kata yang termasuk referensi personal seperti pronomina persona pertama( yang mengacu pada diri sendiri), pronomina persona kedua (yang mengacu pada lawan bicara), dan pronomina persona ketiga (yang mengacu pada orang yang dibicarakan). Berdasarkan hasil penelitian tersebut diatas, dapat disimpulkan bahwa kata-kata yang mencakup referensi persona terdapat perbedaan baik didalam penulisan maupun didalam tuturan.  Kata kunci: Novel,referensi personal

Most people are trapped by their monotonous activities, they tend to look for more practical entertainment through smart phones, the internet or television. That might  reduce  the real meaning of social interaction. The existence of public space itself is one of many factors that encourgage people to do social interaction. Therefore, as what the author has read in  a literature study, that third place able to be one of the bridges of social interaction. Third Place provides a catalyst space between home and work, making the third place a comfortable haven. Third Place is not a place of work or home, but a place to relax that can allow you to have a open community life. The selection of a cultural center as a third place because the cultural center can pour various expressions of human needs, dreams and desires. In addition, the location of the site is next to Taman Ismail Marzuki. Seeing that there are several programs that cannot be accommodated by Taman Ismail Marzuki and the need to reintroduce Betawi cultural values that are starting to fade in the present,  encouragge us to create programs that can support this. The design method used by this project is the dis-programming method, a program that is mutually contaminating with other programs, The location is close to the education center and cultural the center which drives both programs to support one another, here the writer combines programs in the cultural center with educational programs such as dance studios, music studios and libraries. AbstrakSebagian besar masyarakat terjebak dengan aktivitas mereka yang monoton, mereka cenderung mencari hiburan yang lebih praktis melalui ponsel pintar, internet atau televisi. Hal tersebut mengurangi esensi dari interaksi sosial yang seharusnya dilakukan. Keberadaan ruang publik sendiri merupakan salah satu faktor yang dapat mendorong terjadinya interaksi sosial. Oleh karena itu penulis melakukan studi literatur, berdasarkan hasil studi penulis dapat menyimpulan bahwa third place dapat menjadi salah satu jembatan interaksi sosial. Third Place menyediakan ruang katalis antara rumah dan tempat kerja, menjadikan third place sebagai tempat singgah yang nyaman. Third Place bukanlah tempat kerja ataupun rumah, melainkan tempat bersantai yang dapat memungkinkan kehidupan komunitas yang terbuka. Pemilihan pusat kebudayaan sebagai third place dikarenakan pusat budaya dapat menuangkan berbagai ekspresi kebutuhan manusia, mimpi dan keinginan. Selain itu, lokasi tapak berada disebelah Taman Ismail Marzuki. Melihat ada beberapa program yang belum dapat diakomodir oleh Taman Ismail Marzuki dan perlunya pengenalan kembali akan nilai-nilai budaya betawi yang mulai pudar di zaman sekarang, mendorongnya diciptakan program – program yang dapat mendukung hal tersebut. Metode perancangan yang digunakan proyek ini adalah metode dis-programming, program yang sifatnya saling mengkontaminasi dengan program lainnya. Letak tapak yang dekat dengan pusat pendidikan dan pusat kebudayaan mendorong terjadinya program yang saling mendukung satu sama lain, disini penulis menggabungkan program yang ada di pusat kebudayaan dengan program pendidikan seperti studio tari, studio musik dan perpustakaan.

ABSTRACT This article examined the nature of prosperousness as the foundation of life of the Indonesian nation towards a prosperous society so that a philosophical approach was realized in a practical level (operational) through the national development. The research used the method of approach philosophical; stages of research, the study of literature; and data analysis, descriptive philosophical.The study results could be stated that fairness and prosperousness were terms that could not be separated, even though both of them were the object of study of science that it was different. Fairness or justice was the study of law and one of the objectives of the law while the prosperousness focused on meeting basic human needs. It was one of economic studies. Fair and prosperous were related to the time, place and the philosophy was adopted by a group of people who called himself as a country. Thus the implementation of both institutions in national development must be understood in the context and could not be separated from the culture, ideology, philosophy of life and philosophy of the nation that was followed. The essence of prosperousness based on Pancasila was social justice and social prosperity through national development in all fields for all the people of Indonesia proportionally and equally and it was inspired by the values of Pancasila unanimously and intactly.ABSTRAKKajian ini membahas hakikat adil dan makmur  sebagai landasan hidup  bangsa Indonesia menuju  masyarakat yang sejahtera, sehingga  pendekatannya lebih bersifat filosofis tetapi kemudian diwujudkan dalam tatanan praktis (operasional) melalui pembangunan nasional.Metode penelitian yang digunakan yaitu metode pendekatan filosofis ; tahap penelitian, studi kepustakaan; dan analisis data, deskriptif filosofis.Hasil kajian yang dapat dikemukakan adalah bahwa adil dan makmur adalah istilah yang tidak dapat dipisahkan, meskipun kedua hal  tersebut merupakan obyek kajian dari ilmu yang berbeda. Keadilan  atau adil adalah kajian hukum dan merupakan salah satu tujuan dari hukum, sedangkan makmur lebih menitikberatkan pada pemenuhan  kebutuhan pokok manusia, sehingga merupakan kajian ekonomi.  Adil dan makmur bersifat relatif, bergantung pada waktu, tempat serta falsafah yang dianut oleh sekelompok masyarakat yang kemudian menamakan dirinya sebagai negara. Dengan demikian penerapan kedua pranata tersebut dalam pembangunan nasional harus dipahami dalam konteks yang tidak dapat dipisahkan dari budaya, ideologi, pandangan hidup serta  falsafah bangsa yang dianutnya. Hakikat adil dan makmur berdasarkan Pancasila merupakan keadilan sosial dan kemakmuran sosial melalui pembangunan nasional di segala bidang untuk seluruh rakyat  Indonesia  secara proporsional (sebanding) dan merata yang dijiwai oleh nilai-nilai  Pancasila secara bulat dan utuh.

Reality of paradoxical in Indonesian existence shows that the corruption achievements is improve as wll as the diversity of the people. It shows that the pattern of religious people still in the theoretical-formalistic stage. It seems the religius leader attempts to tease the religion doctrin to destroy the social structure of community life. Corruption has become a cultural and traditions that haunting destruction the character of Indonesian nation because people who have distort the authority given by the people of Indonesia. That they do corruption can the resulted crisis economical, crisis politic and also poornes, jobles and criminalty, starvation, hardness with others. Majority the people Indonesia regarded as people who are religious. This phenomenon can build character and religious morality to apply teachings of religion to eradicate corruption. This paper seeks to analyze the role and function of religion as a source of kindness and instructions in social life in order to building the character and morality of religion to eradicate corruption.

Rawa Bunga population is constantly increased as time goes by. The increasing population in Rawa Bunga is leading to a change in land-use planning. The initial planning which create a balance between commercial and housing is forced to change into domination of housing. Although the housing community is constantly increased, but the government didn’t increased the community facility or third place in Rawa Bunga. This condition is causing a huge problem for the community to satisfy their daily basic needs. Even more, they started to occupy every vacant place for their activity and making problems for other people. The objective of this design is making a third place for the community of Rawa Bunga that can help them to socialize and interact with each other. The design method is divided into two parts, the first part is collecting data from observation, urban study, and analysis. The second part is start from the program and follow the theory of activity tipology. The design idea is a community facility or third place for interactive sport, sport and interactive technology is chosen because the community in Rawa Bunga loves sports. In addition, the third place will inserted by Betawi culture to introduce the genius loci of Rawa Bunga. Keywords:  interactive sports; Rawa Bunga; Third Place AbstrakKelurahan Rawa Bunga memiliki jumlah penduduk yang selalu meningkat seiring berjalannya waktu. Peningkatan jumlah penduduk yang terjadi berdampak kepada perubahan fungsi lahan yang tidak semestinya seperti Rancangan zonasi awal yang mempunyai komposisi yang seimbang antara komersial dan hunian. Tetapi pada kenyataannya, fungsi lahan yang ada didominasi oleh hunian. Walaupun fungsi hunian bertambah, tetapi tidak diiringi pertambahan third place yang memadai. Akibatnya adalah masalah beruntun berupa kebutuhan dasar manusia yang tidak terpenuhi. Dampak yang dihasilkan adalah pelaksanaan aktivitas masyarakat di tempat – tempat yang tidak semestinya sebagai ganti fasilitas lingkungan yang tidak memadai. Tujuan dari perancangan ini adalah berusaha memenuhi kebutuhan dasar masyarakat di Kelurahan Rawa Bunga akan aktivitas penunjang seperti sosialisasi dan interaksi baik antar manusia maupun dengan lingkungannya melalui third place. Metode Perancangan yang dipakai dibagi menjadi dua tahap, pertama tahap pencarian data dengan metode empiris yaitu observasi, studi kota dan analisis. Tahap kedua, Tahap perancangan dimulai dari hasil yang didapat dari analisis berupa program. Program akan diolah dengan pendekatan metode desain tipologi kegiatan. Ide dari perancangan ini adalah fasilitas lingkungan atau third place dengan aktivitas olahraga yang memakai teknologi interaktif untuk membantu proses sosialisasi dan interaksi baik antar manusia maupun dengan lingkungannya. Olahraga dipilih karena masyarakat di Rawa Bunga senang dengan aktivitas yang bersifat olahraga dan tidak lupa juga disisipi elemen kebudayaan Betawi untuk memperkenalkan genius loci kawasan Rawa Bunga.

Jelambar, Grogol Petamburan, with Jelambar Baru and Wijaya Kusuma, are one united district with a high density of residential population, that have hobby and habit on culinary business, that form many culinary centers and spread unevenly until Jelambar that caused Jelambar to have no culinary center like other districts have. Pawon Jelambar is designed to resolve issues of Jelambar that has no third place that needed by the district with a high density of population; also the low intensity of culinary. However, there are so many neglected small culinary businesses, because of many factors, one of them is a less strategic location. Pawon Jelambar wants to realize Jelambar’s unconsciously need of forming a place of culinary that integrated and has a clarity, by substitute all the small culinary businesses with Pawon Jelambar, with the purpose to increase culinary needs quality of Jelambar. This project is designed through designing stages as a method of design, such as understanding the district segment of Grogol Petamburan; arranging a diagram of issues of Jelambar and issues solving concept; design concept as the result of questionnaire answers analysis; zoning and space programs; analysis of project’s site determination; site analysis. All these analyses form building mass concepts; exterior and interior design; architectural details. The design result is Pawon Jelambar that uses the design concepts, such as green contemporary design, form and function runs together, and contextualism in responding site; with variants of culinary, mini market, culinary workshops, temporary exhibition, and food gallery, as the main architectural programs. Keywords: Architecture; Culinary; Jelambar; Pawon Jelambar; Third place AbstrakJelambar, Grogol Petamburan, bersama Jelambar Baru dan Wijaya Kusuma adalah satu-kesatuan kawasan padat penduduk hunian yang memiliki hobi dan kebiasaan berdagang kuliner, sehingga muncul beberapa pusat-pusat kuliner, namun penyebarannya tidak merata sampai Jelambar, sehingga Jelambar tidak memiliki sebuah pusat kuliner layaknya di titik kawasan lain. Proyek Pawon Jelambar dirancang untuk mengatasi isu-isu yang diangkat, yaitu tidak adanya third place yang menjadi kebutuhan padat penduduk Jelambar; dan intensitas rendah kuliner, namun banyak usaha kuliner kecil yang dibangun warga, tetapi banyak yang mati karena faktor tertentu, seperti lokasi yang kurang strategis. Pawon Jelambar ingin mengwujudkan keinginan tidak sadar Jelambar dalam membentuk sebuah tempat kuliner yang terintegrasi dan jelas, salah satunya dengan cara mensubstitusikan usaha-usaha kecil kuliner tersebut dengan Pawon Jelambar, yaitu untuk meningkatkan kualitas kebutuhan kuliner di kawasannya. Metode perancangan menggunakan serangkaian tahapan perancangan, yaitu pemahaman segmen kawasan Grogol Petamburan; penyusunan diagram isu kawasan dan konsep penyelesaian isu; konsep perancangan hasil analisis jawaban kuisioner; zoning dan program ruang; analisis pemilihan tapak; analisis tapak; menghasilkan konsep massa bangunan; desain eksterior, interior, dan detail arsitektur. Kesimpulan hasil perancangan adalah Pawon Jelambar yang menerapkan konsep green contemporary building design (sustainable architecture), form and function runs together, dan contextualism in responding site; dengan program utama tempat varian kuliner, mini market, pelatihan kuliner, eksibisi temporer dan food gallery.

The public sphere is a social entity with an important function and powerful effects in modern, democratic societies. The idea of the public sphere rests on the conviction that people living in a society, regardless of their age, gender, religion, economic or social status, professional position, sexual orientation, ethnicity, race, or nationality, should be able to publicly express their thoughts, ideas, and opinions about issues that matter to them and impact their lives. This expression should be as free as possible in form and function and should operate through means and methods that people themselves deem suitable, so not via channels that are official or state-sanctioned. The classic Habermasian idea of the public sphere is that it is used by private individuals (not officials or politicians) who should be able to converse with each other in a public-spirited way to develop opinions that impact state or public-body decisions and policies. Also contained within this classic idea is the conviction that public sphere conversations should be rational (i.e., logical, evidence-based, and properly motivated and argued using an acceptable set of rhetorical devices) in order to convince others of the usefulness of a position, statement, or opinion. In commonsensical, political, and journalistic understandings, the public sphere is a critical component of a democracy that enables ordinary citizens to act as interlocutors to those who hold power and thereby hold them to account. As such it is one of the elements whereby democracy as a system is able to claim legitimacy as the “rule of the people.” Journalism’s imbrication in the social imaginary of the public sphere dates back to 17th- and 18th-century Europe when venues like coffee houses, clubs, and private homes, and media like newspapers and newsletters were being used by a mixture of gentry, nobility, and an emerging middle class of traders and merchants and other educated thinkers to disseminate information and express ideas. The conviction that journalism was the key vehicle for the conveyance of information and ideas of public import was then imbedded in the foundations of the practice of modern journalism and in the form exported from Western Europe to the rest of the world. Journalism’s role as a key institution within and vehicle of the public sphere was thus born. Allied to this was the conviction that journalism, via this public sphere role and working on behalf of the public interest (roughly understood as the consensus of opinions formed in the public sphere), should hold political, social, and economic powers to account. Journalists are therefore understood to be crucial proxies for the millions of people in a democracy who cannot easily wield on their own the collective voices that journalism with its institutional bases can produce.

The correct starting point in the analysis of any economic unit is to pose the following three questions: What are the needs of the people? What resources are available? How adequately are these resources being mobilised for these needs ?1These questions are applicable to a continent or a country (or for that matter a county, a city, or a village); they can also be applied to the world as a whole. If they are, a picture emerges which, if it does not appal us, because it is so familiar and so easily taken for granted, would certainly astonish a visitor from another planet. The basic human needs for nourishment and for protection from the weather are not great, and the resources known to be available could, with current levels of technique, easily permit a comfortable living standard for everyone. Yet these resources are very largely unexploited or wasted, and miserable poverty is the typical human condition.
