The ability to detect nanoscale objects is particular crucial for a wide range of applications, such as environmental protection, early-stage disease diagnosis and drug discovery. Photonic crystal nanobeam cavity (PCNC) sensors have attracted great attention due to high-quality factors and small-mode volumes (Q/V) and good on-chip integrability with optical waveguides/circuits. In this review, we focus on nanoscale optical sensing based on PCNC sensors, including ultrahigh figure of merit (FOM) sensing, single nanoparticle trapping, label-free molecule detection and an integrated sensor array for multiplexed sensing. We believe that the PCNC sensors featuring ultracompact footprint, high monolithic integration capability, fast response and ultrahigh sensitivity sensing ability, etc., will provide a promising platform for further developing lab-on-a-chip devices for biosensing and other functionalities.

This paper presents an active accelerator pedal system based on an integrated sensor and actuator using shape memory alloy (SMA) for speed control and to create haptics in the accelerator pedal. A device named sensaptics is developed with a pair of bi-functional SMA wires instrumented in a synergistic configuration function as an active sensor for positioning the accelerator pedal (pedal position sensing) to control the vehicle speed through electronic throttle and as a variable impedance actuator to generate active force (haptic) feedback to the driver. The reaction force emanated from the pedal alerts the driver and takes appropriate control action by slowing down the vehicle, in harmony with the road’s condition. The design is developed as a proof-of-concept device and is tested and evaluated in a real-time common rail diesel system for rail pressure regulation and over speeding tests, and the responses and performances are found to be promising.

In this paper, the performance, modelling and application of a planar electromagnetic sensor are discussed. Due to the small size profiles and their non-contact nature, planar sensors are widely used due to their simple and basic design. The paper discusses the experimentation and the finite element modelling (FEM) performed for developing the design of planar coils. In addition, the paper investigates the performance of various topologies of planar sensors when they are used in inductive sensing. This technique has been applied to develop a new displacement sensor. The ANSYS Maxwell FEM package has been used to analyse the models while varying the topologies of the coils. For this purpose, different models in FEM were constructed and then tested with topologies such as circular, square and hexagon coil configurations. The described methodology is considered an effective way for the development of sensors based on planar coils with better performance. Moreover, it also confirms a good correlation between the experimental data and the FEM models. Once the best topology is chosen based on performance, an optimisation exercise was then carried out using uncertainty models. That is, the influence of variables such as number of turns and the spacing between the coils on the output inductance has been investigated. This means that the combined effects of these two variables on the output inductance was studied to obtain the optimum values for the number of turns and the spacing between the coils that provided the highest level of inductance from the coils. Integrated sensor systems are a pre-requisite for developing the concept of smart cities in practice due to the fact that the individual sensors can hardly meet the demands of smart cities for complex information. This paper provides an overview of the theoretical concept of smart cities and the integrated sensor systems.

AbstractSensors for structural health monitoring (SHM) need to be permanently integrated on structures and withstand the harsh service environments, which has been a big challenge for the application of SHM in aircrafts. This paper focuses on the durability of flexible eddy current array (FECA) sensors in harsh service environments of aircrafts, including vibration environment and several typical exposed environments. First, a kind of FECA sensor is illustrated and its integration method is proposed. Moreover, in order to study the durability of the sensor in vibration environment, the modal analysis is performed by the finite element method. According to the simulation results, the durability experiment in vibration environment is carried out under the fourth order vibration mode, which makes the sensor suffer the harshest vibration loads. During the vibration experiment, output signals of the sensor keep stable and the sensor is well bonded to the structure, which shows the integrated sensor has high durability in vibration environment. Finally, the durability of integrated sensors is separately tested in three exposed environments, including salt fog corrosion environment, fluid immersion environment, as well as hygrothermal and ultraviolet-radiation environment. After these environmental exposure experiments, all sensors are well bonded to structures and can effectively monitor fatigue cracks, which shows great durability. Therefore, FECA sensors can survive in harsh service environments of aircrafts, which provides important support for the engineering applications of FECA sensors.

In the current study, a simulated online parturition detection model is developed and reported. Using a machine learning (ML)-based approach, the model incorporates data from Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) tracking collars, accelerometer ear tags and local weather data, with the aim of detecting parturition events in pasture-based sheep. The specific objectives were two-fold: (i) determine which sensor systems and features provide the most useful information for lambing detection; (ii) evaluate how these data might be integrated using ML classification to alert to a parturition event as it occurs. Two independent field trials were conducted during the 2017 and 2018 lambing seasons in New Zealand, with the data from each used for ML training and independent validation, respectively. Based on objective (i), four features were identified as exerting the greatest importance for lambing detection: mean distance to peers (MDP), MDP compared to the flock mean (MDP.Mean), closest peer (CP) and posture change (PC). Using these four features, the final ML was able to detect 27% and 55% of lambing events within ±3 h of birth with no prior false positives. If the model sensitivity was manipulated such that earlier false positives were permissible, this detection increased to 91% and 82% depending on the requirement for a single alert, or two consecutive alerts occurring. To identify the potential causes of model failure, the data of three animals were investigated further. Lambing detection appeared to rely on increased social isolation behaviour in addition to increased PC behaviour. The results of the study support the use of integrated sensor data for ML-based detection of parturition events in grazing sheep. This is the first known application of ML classification for the detection of lambing in pasture-based sheep. Application of this knowledge could have significant impacts on the ability to remotely monitor animals in commercial situations, with a logical extension of the information for remote monitoring of animal welfare.

Pyroelectric infrared sensors are often based on lead-containing materials, which are harmful to the environment and subject to governmental restrictions. Ferroelectric Hf1−xZrxO2 thin films offer an environmentally friendly alternative. Additionally, CMOS integration allows for integrated sensor circuits, enabling scalable and cost-effective applications. In this work, we demonstrate the deposition of pyroelectric thin films on area-enhanced structured substrates via thermal atomic layer deposition. Scanning electron microscopy indicates a conformal deposition of the pyroelectric film in the holes with a diameter of 500 nm and a depth of 8 μm. By using TiN electrodes and photolithography, capacitor structures are formed, which are contacted via the electrically conductive substrate. Ferroelectric hysteresis measurements indicate a sizable remanent polarization of up to 331 μC cm−2, which corresponds to an area increase of up to 15 by the nanostructured substrate. For pyroelectric analysis, a sinusoidal temperature oscillation is applied to the sample. Simultaneously, the pyroelectric current is monitored. By assessing the phase of the measured current profile, the pyroelectric origin of the signal is confirmed. The devices show sizable pyroelectric coefficients of −475 μC m−2 K−1, which is larger than that of lead zirconate titanate (PZT). Based on the experimental evidence, we propose Hf1−xZrxO2 as a promising material for future pyroelectric applications.
