The social, economic and religious pressures encountered by Eastern European Jews who emigrated to North America have been well documented. But focus on these areas has mostly failed to take into account the relationship between Orthodox Judaism and the process of adaptation to the New World. At the turn of the century, Orthodox rabbis, immigrants themselves, actively wrestled with the competing demands of Orthodox tradition and modern society. One such rabbi, Judah (Yudel) Rosenberg, brought with him to Canada a background combining both traditional Hasidism and secular learning. Rosenberg sought to draw the people closer to tradition by making it more accessible to them. Mysticism, especially, he viewed as the key to the preservation and regeneration of Judaism amongst a population that found it easier to make excuses than to follow the letter of religious law.

Tulisan ini menggambarkan tentang terjadinya peristiwa G 30 septemberyang sempat mengguncang kehidupan politik Indonesia yang berakibat pula terhadap kehidupan sosial, ekonomi dan budaya masyarakat Indonesia, khususnya di Daerah Nusa Tenggara Barat yaitu Desa Labuhan Haji Kecamatan Labuhan Haji Kabupaten Lombok Timur ikut merasakan dampak dari peristiwa G 30 september tahun 1965. Sebelum terjadinya G 30 September masyarakat Labuhan Haji pernah melakukan hubungan sosial, ekonomi dan budaya dengan Etnis Cina, hubungan tersebut tidak berjalan lama, pada tahun 1965 para pengusaha Cina diusir secara paksa oleh masyarakat Lombok, karena dianggap sebagai antek PKI, hal ini disebabkan karena di Negara Cina berkembang partai Komunis. Karena adanya peristiwa G 30 september tahun 1965 para pengusaha Cina yang ada di Desa Labuhan Haji di curigai   sebagai   antek   PKI   dan   diusir   dari   daerah   Labuhan   Haji   yang mengakibatkan terpuruknya kehidupan masyarakat Labuhan Haji dan sekitarnya khususnya masyarakat Desa Labuhan Haji. This paper describes the occurrence of the events of G 30 September which had shook the Indonesian political life that also affected the social, economic and cultural life of Indonesian people, especially in West Nusa Tenggara, Labuhan Haji, Labuhan Haji Sub-District, East Lombok Regency, felt the impact of the September 30, 1965 G. events. September Labuhan Haji community once conducted social, economic and cultural relations with the Ethnic Chinese, the relationship did not go long, in 1965 Chinese businessmen were forcibly expelled by Lombok society, because it is considered as PKI's henchman, this is because in the developing Chinese Party Communist. Because of the events of G 30 September 1965 the Chinese businessmen in Labuhan Haji Village were suspected of being PKI's henchmen and expelled from Labuhan Haji area which resulted in the decline of Labuhan Haji and surrounding communities, especially the people of Labuhan Haji Village.

This paper attempts to rethink the relationship between the practice of shamanism and the political-economic ‘context’ it is held to emerge from in contemporary Mongolia. In the face of an extraordinary ‘revival’ in shamanism, anthropologists have sought explanations for the phenomenon that centre around a concern with how to locate it in relation to the social, economic and political structures alongside which it manifests. Authors tend to produce accounts that either reduce shamanism to an expression of more fundamental material realities, or explore the cosmo-ontological parameters of the practice itself, in turn masking its articulation with other processes in the social field. This point will be illustrated with reference to a novel ethnography of the making of the shamanic gown in Ulaanbaatar. Yet more than this, it will be suggested that a more sustained reflection upon the nature of the shamanic gown, and consideration of new information regarding the processes that contribute to its creation, might provide the means to theorise in a rather different fashion. The shamanic gown and the people and things mobilised in its emergence do not simply collect social and theoretical contexts, but rather flow outward. As such, while being both intimately reactiveandirreducible to the adjacent realities, Mongolian shamanism also engages in themakingof these very structures. Shamanism and the making of shamanic gowns do not simply emerge from, or deny, contexts; they assemble them.

AbstractAlthough Max Weber does not specifically analyze the topic of esteem, his investigation of the Protestant ethic offers interesting insights into it. The change in mentality it engendered essentially contributed to enhancing the meaning and importance of esteem in modern society. In his analysis, Weber ascertains that esteem was fundamental to being accepted and integrated into the social life of congregations. Nevertheless, he also highlights that esteem was supported by a form of self-esteem which was not simply derived from a good social reputation, but also achieved through a deep and continual self-analysis as well as a strict discipline in the ethical conduct of life. The present analysis reconstructs the different aspects of the relationship between social and self-esteem and analyzes the consequences of that relationship by focusing on the exemplary case of the politician’s personality and ethic.

Historic gardens are important parts of humanity’s built heritage within the designed landscape, providing many environmental, economic and socio-cultural benefits. Management is a key part of their conservation, perhaps the most difficult because it is costly, must be continual, and requires a skilled workforce. This systematic review looks at the literature addressing historic garden management, with special attention regarding the social, economic and environmental aspects of sustainability. Academic studies on this subject come from many different disciplines, making it both stimulating and fragmented. It is now time to consolidate these interdisciplinary efforts into a clear vision, including a framework of key themes and research methods so as to better coordinate efforts and make the information and innovation generated more accessible to the garden managers “in the trenches”. With this aim, reviewed studies are classified according to 10 criteria: supply or demand orientation; management phase involved; primary sustainability processes addressed; geographic criteria; number of sites covered; policy documents referred to; kind of data collected; study methods employed; possibility of bias specifically regarding historic gardens; garden use. An analysis of these criteria shows that historic garden management literature focuses on describing the gardens themselves, with few studies interested in the people supporting them. Future research should follow recent policy documents’ lead and pay more attention to community value and involvement.

The article deals with methodological aspects of the development of ecological culture of schoolchildren in a multicultural educational environment. The authors identify two acute problems in modern society – multiculturalism and ecology. The Russian Federation is a multicultural country. Multicultural education is aimed at preserving the diversity of Russian society, carries the potential and tool for protecting ethnic and national communities in a multi-ethnic Russia, promotes the integration of all territorial-economic, political and national-cultural communities into a single Russian nation, allows a person to adapt to a multicultural world, helps a person understand himself and the people around him and promote the social role of a cultural person in society. The authors consider the relationship between multiculturalism and ethnopedagogy, identify the main pedagogical approaches and principles of development of multicultural education. The article notes the importance of integration of two significant areas in education and in the world - ethnology and ecology. Together they make an ethno-cultural module and an eco-cultural module which form the values for the society sustainable development. The possibility of using the technology of project activity through the implementation of ethno-ecological projects of students is considered. The authors note that ethnoecological projects on the dominant activity of students can be of different directions: research, educational, creative or practical ones. The most effective way to work on projects is through the implementation of a system of eco-oriented multicultural project weeks. Authors pay an important attention to the projects aimed at studying the ethnoecological traditions of the native land, the peculiarities of its geography, climate, natural landscape, flora and fauna, reflected in folklore, folk crafts, cults, rituals, holidays, legends, myths, etc.

El objetivo de este artículo es analizar la formación inicial del profesorado de Educación Física, incorporando elementos de reflexión y propuestas para considerar tanto en los planes de estudio como a nivel de las materias que componen el mismo. Todo esto, desde el convencimiento de que las cuestiones más importantes en nuestro campo se decidirán en un marco político que prioriza las cuestiones económicas y sociales ante la investigación y las opiniones de los expertos. Se desarrollará de acuerdo a la siguiente estructura:(1) Justificaremos que los procesos de innovación y cambio están influenciados principalmente por el contexto social, económico y político (más que por los resultados obtenidos desde la investigación); (2) analizaremos la evolución de la formación docente, prestando especial atención a la «nueva formación del profesorado» (docentes informados, críticos y capaces de promover el cambio); (3) defenderemos la necesidad de concebir y realizar una formación del profesorado capaz de prepararlos para ser eficaces; (4) nos referiremos a los desafíos para una formación de calidad del profesorado de Educación Física, centrándose en aspectos tales como: ¿Qué papel deben jugar las características de las/los estudiantes que quieren acceder a los programas de formación inicial del profesorado de educación física (FIPEF) y como transformar las creencias de los futuros docentes? ¿Qué tipos de programas contribuyen a la formación de un profesional más cualificado? ¿Cómo definir e impartir la materia dentro de los programas de FIPEF?, y ¿Cuáles son las características de los FIPEF de calidad? y, (5) concluiremos haciendo algunas recomendaciones para la formación inicial del profesorado de educación física.Palabras clave. formación inicial del profesorado, profesorado de educación física, educación física, innovación educativa.Abstract. The aim of this paper is to analyse the Physical Education in Teacher Education (PETE) in introducing elements of reflection and proposals considering both the curriculum and the contents used in this curriculum. We will do this based on the conviction that the most important issues in our field will be decided on a policy framework that prioritizes social and economic issues grounded on research and expert opinions. This article has the following structure: (1) we will introduce the topics of the article emphasising that the processes of innovation and changes are mainly influenced by the social, economic and political context (rather than the results obtained from research); (2) we will analyse the evolution of teacher education, giving special attention to the «new teacher education» (informed, critical and able to promote change); (3) we will defend the need to conceive and perform a PETE able to prepare teachers to become effective teachers; (4) we will refer to the challenges for PETE, trying to answer the following relevant questions: What role should PETE candidates’ attributes play in the PETE curriculum and what is the relationship between effective PETE and student achievement in physical education? What programmatic structures or curricular frameworks are most promising for preparing effective teachers? How should we define and deliver subject matter within PETE? What pedagogical strategies within PETE promote effective teaching? And, (5) we will conclude making some recommendations to PETE.

People continue to believe in the efficacy of magic in the era of science and technology. Mythology pertaining to curative aspect of magic which is believed to solve the social, economic and medical problems of the people. Initially, a socio-economic survey of the households was conducted in Rawalpindi at Dhok Ratta and Dhok Khabba, which tapped 796 households. Later, 44 people who confessed using magic were interviewed with the help of an interview guide and participant observation at the aastaanas of the aamils. Mostly people who believed in the magical practices were inflicted with health, domestic, social and economic problems and sought magical cure as a last resort. The efficacy of magic is determined by socio-economic status, sex, marital status and education of the people rather than their belief in religion and fatalism.

The article analyzes the processes of intensive informatization and technologization of modern society, affecting the vector of development of the social, economic, political and military spheres of the state. In this context, the problem of informational impact on a human personality, his consciousness, mindset, spiritual and value orientations is considered. On the scale of the geopolitical interaction of the world community at the information-psychological level, this problem is revealed through the prism of describing the nature and content of the information war carried out in the interests of achieving political and military goals. Areas of informational influence on police officers are specified. In this regard, the need for the formation of information literacy of law enforcement specialists is being updated; the directions of information and psychological counteraction and protection against information attacks are highlighted. Psychological resistance, critical thinking, information security are named among the priority solutions to the highlighted issue.

The study which is descriptive qualitative in nature, aims to investigate preference of politeness strategies by Balinese Hindu-community in traditional marriage ritual. Data was collected using interview and observation methods. Based on the results of data analysis, this research shows that the form of politeness that arises can be seen in terms of place, time, to the leaders of the people, during preparation, implementation, disclosure of the relationship with the Almighty, and after the completion of the ritual. The different forms of politeness that emerge can be seen from the use of Balinese in various levels which are adjusted to the social distance and speech situation. Besides being seen from the use of language, linguistic politeness is also evident from the attitude, intonation, and tone of the speaker. The difference in the form of politeness is intentionally raised to cause certain psychological impacts on the interlocutor.

This chapter examines the role of imagination and the arts in helping social scientists to theorize well. However deep one's basic knowledge of social theory is, and however many concepts, mechanisms, and theories one knows, unless this knowledge is used in an imaginative way, the result will be dull and noncreative. A good research topic should among other things operate as an analogon—that is, it should be able to set off the theoretical imagination of the social scientist. Then, when a social scientist writes, he or she may want to write in such a way that the reader's theoretical imagination is stirred. Besides imagination, the chapter also discusses the relationship of social theory to art. There are a number of reason for this, including the fact that in modern society, art is perceived as the height of imagination and creativity.
