Background: Previous studies found that low levels of magnesium can increase the risk of several diseases including cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and hypertension which are associated with cognitive dysfunction. Objective: Examine the association between serum magnesium and cognitive function among Qatari adults. In addition to assessing the interaction relation between low serum magnesium, hypertension, and diabetes in relation to cognitive function. Methods: Data from 1000 Qatari participants aged ≥20 years attending the Qatar Biobank Study were analyzed. Serum magnesium was measured by an automated calorimetric method and suboptimal magnesium was characterized by <0.85 mmol/L. Cognitive function was measured by a computer-based selfadministered test focusing on mean reaction time (MRT). Multivariable linear regression and logistic regression were used. Results: The prevalence of suboptimal magnesium was 57.1%. Across the quartiles of serum magnesium from high to low, the regression coefficients (95% CI) for MRT were 0, -17.79, -18.27, and -31.93 (95%CI 2.38–3.05), respectively (p for trend <0.033). The presence of hypertension and diabetes significantly increased the MRT along with a wide range of low serum magnesium. Women with diabetes or hypertension were affected the greatest by low magnesium levels. Conclusion: There was a positive association between serum magnesium and cognitive function. Low magnesium levels were associated with a longer MRT.

Background: Cognitive impairments has become a global public concern. A limited number of studies suggest a positive association between nuts intake and cognitive function. Objectives: The aim of this study is to investigate the association between nuts consumption and cognitive function and to test whether hypertension and diabetes mediate this association among adults in Qatar. Methods: Data from 1000 participants aged 20 and above who attended Qatar Biobank (QBB) were used. Nuts consumption was assessed by a Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ). Blood samples were measured for magnesium and glucose. Cognitive function was assessed using computer self-administrated test to measure Mean Reaction Time (MRT). Linear regression was used to assess the association. Results: A total of 21.1% of the sample reported consuming nuts more than 4-6 times/week (high consumption) while 40.2% reported the consumption ≤1 time/month (low consumption). The mean MRT was 715.6 millisecond (SD 204.1). An inverse association was found between nuts consumption and MRT. Compared with those with a low consumption, high consumption of nuts had a regression coefficient of -36.95 (-68.09 to -5.82) after adjusting for sociodemographic and lifestyle factors. The inverse association between nuts and MRT was mainly seen among those aged >50 years. There was an interaction between nuts consumption and hypertension. The association between nuts consumption and MRT was not mediated via hypertension, diabetes, and serum magnesium. Conclusion: There is a positive association between nuts consumption and cognitive function, especially among old adults.

Aim: To determine the frequency of hypomagnesaemia in children with hypocalcemic seizures. Study Design:  Cross sectional descriptive study. Place and Duration: Department of Pediatrics, Liaquat University Hospital, Jamshoro / Hyderabad. From November 2017 to April 2018. Methodology: Children (06 months to 06 years age and of either gender) having Two or more than two hypocalcemic seizures within 12 hours duration were included in the study . The children with hypocalcemic seizure were assessed for magnesium deficiency (hypomagnesaemia). The evaluation of hypomagnesaemia was done according to the cut off / reference values for hypomagnesaemia (<1.8 mg/dl). The data was collected on pre-structured proforma (attached). Results: Total 147 children with hypocalcemic seizures were taken in this study, among them 49 (33.3%) patients had found low magnesium level and 98 (54.4%) patients had normal magnesium level. Conclusion: Seizures associated with hypocalcaemia is one of the common type of convulsion in children. In our study, a positive relation was found between low levels of serum magnesium and hypocalcemic seizures.

Canada's rate of suicide varies from province to province. The classical theory of suicide, which attempts to explain the social suicide rate, stems from Durkheim, who argued that low levels of social integration and regulation are associated with high rates of suicide. The present study explored whether social factors (divorce, marriage, and birth rates) do in fact predict suicide rates over time for each province (period studied: 1950-1990). The results showed a positive association between divorce rates and suicide rates, and a negative association between birth rates and suicide rates. Marriage rates showed no consistent association, an anomaly as compared to research from other nations.

Background and objectives: Mortality may increase in hypouricemia as well as inhyperuricemia. We assessed the predictive value of low serum uric acid (SUA) levels on the risk of overall mortality or a composite endpoint of death and nonfatal events. Materials and Methods: In 1013 community-based middle-aged adults, free of uncontrolled diabetes and coronary heart disease at baseline, the association of sex-specific SUA tertiles with defined outcomes was evaluated prospectively by logistic regression, stratified to gender and presence of type-2 diabetes, using recent criteria. Results: Totally, 43 deaths and additional incident nonfatal events in 157 cases were recorded at a median 3.4 years’ follow-up. Multivariable linear regression disclosed SUA to be significantly associated among non-diabetic individuals positively with creatinine, triglycerides, and body mass index in women further with fasted glucose. In multivariable-adjusted logistic regression analysis, sex-specifically dichotomized baseline uric acid (<5.1 and <4.1 mg/dL vs. higher values) significantly predicted the non-fatal events in the whole sample (relative risk (RR) 1.51 [95% confidence interval (CI) 1.02; 2.26]), as well as in men, while composite endpoint in the whole sample tended to rise (RR 1.38). Compared with the intermediate one, the top and bottom SUA tertiles combined tended to confer mortality risk (RR 2.40 [95% CI 0.89; 6.51]). Adverse outcomes in diabetic women were predicted by tertiles 2 and 3. Conclusions: Inverse association of SUA with adverse outcomes, especially in men, is consistent with the involvement of uric acid mass in autoimmune activation. The positive association of uric acid with adverse outcomes in diabetic women is likely mediated by concomitant high-density lipoprotein dysfunction.

In-person schooling has proved contentious and difficult to study throughout the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. Data from a massive online survey in the United States indicates an increased risk of COVID-19-related outcomes among respondents living with a child attending school in-person. School-based mitigation measures are associated with significant reductions in risk, particularly daily symptoms screens, teacher masking, and closure of extra-curricular activities. A positive association between in-person schooling and COVID-19 outcomes persists at low levels of mitigation, but when seven or more mitigation measures are reported, a significant relationship is no longer observed. Among teachers, working outside the home was associated with an increase in COVID-19-related outcomes, but this association is similar to other occupations (e.g., healthcare, office work). While in-person schooling is associated with household COVID-19 risk, this risk can likely be controlled with properly implemented school-based mitigation measures.

Parental warmth plays an important role in the development of adolescents’ physical and mental health. There are numerous empirical studies indicating a relationship between parental warmth and prosocial behavior among adolescents, although the underlying mechanisms of this association remain unclear. Adopting a longitudinal design across two time points, the present study proposes a moderated mediation model to explore the mediating role of gratitude and the moderating role of the school climate between parental warmth and prosocial behavior. The sample consisted of 943 participants (483 boys and 451 girls) who participated in the second assessment and completed questionnaires assessing gratitude, school climate, and prosocial behavior in April 2019. Their parents participated in the first assessment and completed a questionnaire pertaining to parental warmth in October 2018. After controlling for the gender and age of the adolescents, the results showed that the positive association between parental warmth and prosocial behavior is mediated by gratitude, and school climate does play a moderating role in the second half of the mediating path. Specifically, the school climate can play a protective role in adolescents with low levels of gratitude. For adolescents with less gratitude, a strong school climate can promote more prosocial behaviors and can effectively alleviate the negative prediction of low levels of gratitude. This study provides a theoretical explanation for the generation of adolescents’ prosocial behavior and provides theoretical guidance for the interventions of schools and parents.

Same-sex sexual behaviour (SSB) has been documented in a wide range of animals, but its evolutionary causes are not well understood. Here, we investigated SSB in the light of Reeve's acceptance threshold theory. When recognition is not error-proof, the acceptance threshold used by males to recognize potential mating partners should be flexibly adjusted to maximize the fitness pay-off between the costs of erroneously accepting males and the benefits of accepting females. By manipulating male burying beetles' search time for females and their reproductive potential, we influenced their perceived costs of making an acceptance or rejection error. As predicted, when the costs of rejecting females increased, males exhibited more permissive discrimination decisions and showed high levels of SSB; when the costs of accepting males increased, males were more restrictive and showed low levels of SSB. Our results support the idea that in animal species, in which the recognition cues of females and males overlap to a certain degree, SSB is a consequence of an adaptive discrimination strategy to avoid the costs of making rejection errors.
