The study of the needs of the elderly and the possibilities to activate their life position and improve their well-being and social security was carried out using the methods of a questionnaire, expert survey, interviewing, and testing. The results were tested in a socio-pedagogical experiment. The conclusions derived as a result of the study show that the potential of the elderly is used to a lesser extent than required by the elderly themselves and society as a whole. At the same time, the level of education directly affects the quality of life, the level of well-being of older people, and the degree of their involvement in professional activities and social activity. Overall, there is a direct correlation between the level of education of older people and their adaptation in modern society, as well as between senior citizens’ level of education and satisfaction with life.

ABSTRACT Objective: To understand the reasons that lead Brazilian and Spanish seniors to enroll in a university for the elderly. Method: A qualitative study that used Symbolic Interactionism as a theoretical reference and the Grounded Theory as a methodological reference. We interviewed 44 seniors enrolled in universities for the elderly from two countries (Brazil and Spain) between October 2014 and May 2016. Results: The motivations were related to the necessity of occupying the free time, even for improving health; to the opportunity of access to university learning bypassing formal education criteria; to the expansion of social relations, sought through the creation of new friendships, the desire to know other people’s life experiences, and the exchange of knowledge. Final considerations: Older people have sought in universities for the elderly a pleasurable way of learning and occupying the free time.

AbstractThe Clock Drawing Test (CDT) has been recognized as an effective tool for dementia detection. This study investigated the clock drawing performance of 240 non-demented elderly Korean people with a wide-range of educational levels and 28 patients with mild dementia of the Alzheimer’s type (DAT). We examined the effects of demographic factors, including education, and established norms for the elderly population. We found that the educational attainment and literacy status of older people influenced performance on the CDT significantly (p < .001). Furthermore, qualitative error analysis revealed that normal participants with low educational background committed errors similar to errors of the DAT patients. The DAT patients performed significantly worse than the non-demented participants in the CDT Total score (p < .001). However, the CDT has better criterion validity in participants with more than 6 years of education. In conclusion, the CDT performance in older people who are either illiterate or with 6 or less years of education should be interpreted with caution. Conceptual errors in the CDT can be the result of not only dementia but also lack of education. (JINS, 2010, 16, 1138–1146.)
