Botia fish (Chrombotia macracanthus), known as the clown loach, is a species of freshwater ornamental fish from the Cobitidae family whose distribution is limited to the islands of Borneo and Sumatra. The limitations of Botia fish distribution make it necessary to increase the maturity of the gonadal Botia fish to increase the breeding of these fish. The results of the evaluation of the effect of gonadotropin hormone on fish Botia carried out for four days and on the first female parent produced as many as 15,898 eggs with FR (Fertilization Rate) of 57.5% and HR (Hatching Rate) of 60.5%. The second Botia parent produces 10,872 eggs with FR (Fertilization Rate) of 96.5% and HR (Hatching Rate) of 13.7%. HCG serves to homogenize the size of the egg and accelerate gonadal maturity. Ovaprim serves to accelerate the ovulation process and stimulate spawning.

An experiment was conducted to observe some biological aspects including growth, sex ratio, gonadal maturity, artificial insemination, fecundity, fertilization, hatching and larval development of O. pabda in a private hatchery. Total weight of the sampled fish varied from 1.60±0.43 to 111.12±6.83 g and length varied from 3.57±0.65 to 21.22±1.84 cm with the SGR 2.85±0.18 and ADG 0.73±0.05. The length and weight of the fish had a strong correlation (r²=0.966). Female dominance over male has been observed in the species. The male to female ratio was 1:1.48. Females were 16.8 cm in length at first maturity, while males were 16.6 cm in length. The GSI of female were ranged from 2.93 to 4.77 with the mean of 3.77±0.60 during the study period. The fecundity of O. pabda was ranged from 5675 to 19626 with the mean of 12503±4192 for the corresponding length 21.23±1.71, body weight 111.12±7.6 and gonad weight 4.19±0.87. Fertilization rate, hatching rate and larval development observed during the experiment. Scattered diagram for length-weight, fecundity-length, fecunditybody weight and fecundity-gonad weight relationship shows a perfect correlation both arithmetically and logarithmically.

The objectives of this research was to evaluate the inheritance of albino slayer phenotype in brushmouth (Hypostomus plecostomus, Linn 1758) through the crosses and reproduction performance. The crossing scheme consisted of reciprocal crosses between albino slayer and albino non slayer (SN, NS) and between albino slayer (SS), each spawning in pairs (1:1) with three replications and twice spawning. The fish used in this study were brushmouth fish (Hypostomus sp.) albino Slayer males 9.07 ± 0.5 cm, albino slayer females 8.96 ± 0.4 cm, albino non slayer males 8.87 ± 0.17 cm, and albino non slayer female 8.86 ± 0.16 cm. Slayer phenotype category was identified based on the caudal length fin with 4.43 ± 0.64 cm. Parameters determined included the phenotype distribution of albino slayer, total number of eggs, fertilization rate, hatching rate and survival rate. The results showed that all crossing schemes produced four phenotypes classes including normal slayer, normal non slayer, albino slayer and albino non slayer. The slayer phenotype of albino brushmouth was highest percentage (75%) in crossing with male albino slayer (SN, SS) and highest number of eggs, while the reciprocal crossing with female albino slayer (NS) produced albino slayer 55% and lower egg count. The ratio of tail fin length to body length in albino slayer phenotype was lower than normal phenotype of broom fish. The fertilization and hatching rates were not significantly different in all crosses; however the number of eggs decreased in the second spawning. The similar phenotype cross between albino slayer phenotypes (SS) resulted the best average of survival rate (92%).

This study aimed to determine the effects of fermented feed using probiotics and laser-firing to accelerate the mature broodstocks and seed productions of African catfish (Clarias gariepinus). Fish has used male and female broodstocks of catfish. The method was used a completely randomized design with three treatments: unfermented feed as control, probiotic-fermented feed (PFF), and probioticfermented feed+laser firing (PFF+Li). In the first study, a laser-firing dose of 1.125 Joule was performed on fish broodstocks every 15 days. The gonadal maturity time of male and female broodstocks was observed. The second study, treated female broodstocks, was mated with mature male broodstocks without any prior treatments (control). Fertilization rate, hatching rate, and seed production performances such as survival rate and total length were measured. The results showed that treatment of PFF+Li has a significant effect (P<0.05) on the gonadal maturity time of males and females. This treatment reaches the fastest time to mature of the female gonad (31-41 days) and the male gonad (32-37 days) than other treatments (P<0.05). This treatment also produced the highest fertilization, hatching, and survival rates of more than 90%, respectively, and the highest seed yield of 2.1-3.0 cm size compared to other treatments (P<0.05) in African catfish.

Abstract Background Parental investment by birds is limited by the habitat environment, and a male parent increases its effort to reproduce in birds that live in high-altitude areas. Methods A study of the reproductive behaviour of the Saxaul Sparrow (Passer ammodendri) and the Isabelline Shrike (Lanius isabellinus) was carried out at the Gansu An’xi Extremely Arid Desert National Nature Reserve in northwest China to determine the reproductive input of passerine species in desert habitats. Results In Saxaul Sparrows, compared to the female parent, the male parent exhibited a significantly higher frequency of nest-defense behaviour (chirping and warning) during nesting, hatching and feeding periods. In addition, in comparison to the female parent, the male parent exhibited almost equal frequencies of nesting and incubation but fed nestlings significantly more times. Similar to the male sparrows, the feeding rates of the male Isabelline Shrikes were significantly higher than those of the females. The hatching rate and fledging rate of the Saxaul Sparrow on average in this study were 81.99 and 91.92%, respectively, while those of the shrike were 69.00 and 96.53%, respectively. Conclusions These two different passerine species living in the same desert environment exhibited the same trend in their reproductive investments. Adapting to desert environments is a strategy that may have evolved in passerines where male parent birds put more effort than females into reproduction to ensure high reproductive output.

Sedangkan nilai jumlah telur yang berhasil ovulasi dan derajat pembuahan yang relatif lebih baik ditemukan pada perlakuan dosis 0,7 mL/kg dibandingkan dengan dosis 0,3 dan 0,5 mL/kg.Asian redtail catfish (Hemibagrus nemurus) has a good prospect to be developed as aquaculture commodity in Indonesia. It was proved by the demand of consumers regarding to its delicious flesh taste. Recently, efforts to increase seedling production could be implemented through artificial spawning with hormonal manipulation. This study was conducted to evaluate the production of broodstocks through artificial spawning with different doses of GnRH-a. Study was conducted at Research Institute for Freshwater Fisheries Germplasm, Cijeruk, Bogor in November, 2017. The broodstock used in this study was 465.0 ± 71.8 g for females, and 426.3 ± 46.8 g for males. Induction was performed by injection of GnRH-a hormone with three different doses on female broodstocks (0.3, 0.5 and 0.7 mL/kg of body weight), and male broodstocks with a dose of 0.4 mL/kg of body weight. Each treatment consisted of three females as replications. The hormone was injected intramuscularly, given twice injection: 35% of the total dose is given at the first injection, and the remaining 65% was given at the second injection, with an injection time interval of eight hours. The results showed the observed parameters of number of the ovulated eggs, fertilization rate, hatching rate, and larval survival for seven days, treatment dosage of 0.5 mL/kg showed better results (P<0.05) than the dosage of 0.3 mL/kg and 0.7 mL/kg. Parameters observed were number of ovulated eggs, fertility rate, hatching rate, and survival rate for seven days. The results showed that the dosage of 0.5 mL/kg GnRH-a injection to the broodstock during artificial spawning resulted in higher hatching rate compared to 0.3 and 0.7 mL/kg and better larval survival rate than the dosage of 0.7 mL/kg. Meanwhile, the number of ovulated eggs and fertility rate was relatively better in the treatment of 0.7 mL/kg compared with the dosage of 0.3 and 0.5 mL/kg.

This experiment was conducted to determine the dietary n-3 fatty acid requirement for reproduction of broodstock zebrafish, Brachydanio rerio. Three isonitrogenous (39% crude protein) and isocaloric (3,260 kcal digestible energy/kg diet) practical diets, namely diets A, B, and C, with different levels of fatty acids were fed to zebrafish broodstock. The broodstock were cultivated in aquaria. Diet A contained low dosage of n-3 fatty acids (0.4%) and 2% n-6 fatty acids, while diets B and C contained 2% n-6 fatty acids, combined respectively with 1% and 1.5% n-3 fatty acids. Fish were fed ad satiation for 60 days using these diets. During feeding periode, gonade maturation stages were examined. The n-3 and n-6 fatty acids affected fecundity, fertilization rate, and hatching rate. On the other hand, fish fed on diets A, B, or C did not show any significance differences in the gonade somatic index and total Survival Rate (SR) of larvae produced. Fish fed on diet B produced the highest fecundity (616 eggs/g of fish), fertilization rate (94.6%), and hatching rate (93.8%). The total lipid content of eggs were significant, ranging from B (29.7%), C (23.7%), and A (16.1%). At a dosage of 2% n-6 fatty acids, zebrafish require 1% of dietary n-3 fatty acids in the diet for reproduction. Excess dosage of n-3 fatty acid in the diet adversely affected fecundity, fertilization rate, and hatching rate.

Oryzias sp. from Tunda Island, Indonesia has the potential as a model organism in laboratories and also ornamental fish. Basic information regarding maintenance during adaptation post-transportation from its habitat in nature, embryo incubation and maintenance of larvae is needed as a basis for breeding activities. The results showed that Oryzias sp. from Tunda Island can adapt, spawning and produce a total 262 eggs (diameter 0.88-1.02 mm) in a controlled environment. Eggs from spawning in nature begin to hatch on the 11th incubation day, the hatching peak occurs on the 13th day with a hatching process 4-9 days at 25-27oC. The hatching rate ranges from 57.14-100% and the survival of 5 days old lavae after hatching is 72.72-100.00%. The transportation technique in this study has not been able to suppress fish mortality during post-transportation rearing.

Cryopreservation of Curimba semen (Prochilodus lineatus) is ecological and commercial importance. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of different concentrations (2, 5, 8 and 11%) of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) diluted in Betsville Thawing Solution (BTS) on the quality of post-thaw semen Curimba. We analyzed the rate and period motility, sperm viability, membrane integrity and DNA, mitochondrial functionality, and fertilization and hatching rate. The plasma membrane and DNA integrity of a DMSO concentration of 11% obtained better results than the concentration of 5% (p <0.05). However, treatment of 5% DMSO resulted in a longer latency and a higher fertilization rate and hatching, in other sperm quality equal to that of fresh semen. The results of this study indicate that 5% DMSO is ideal for cryopreservation of semen Curimba.

AbstractArgopecten irradians concentricus (Say), one of four geographic subspecies of the bay scallop, has become the major cultured species in southern China since its introduction in 1995. However, its population has been significantly reduced due to high mortality. Also, poor growth rate has been observed following decades of culture. Therefore, the introduction or creation of new varieties is an urgent need. This study describes the first introduction of the new strain, Bohai Red, from the north to southern China. Hybridization trials were conducted between the recently introduced new strain and the local specie, A. irradians concentricus (Say). The success of hybridization was confirmed by SSR maker. The adult and juvenile Bohai Red cannot tolerate high temperatures compared to A. irradians concentricus (Say), whether in natural waters or under laboratory conditions. Fertilization rate for A. irradians concentricus (Say) × Bohai Red exceeded 80%, and hatching rate was 70%. The hybrids exhibit heterosis in survival rate, growth rate, and high-temperature tolerance, demonstrating substantial potential to replace A. irradians concentricus (Say) in southern China.
