This paper proposes the semantics of product functions in a private university in Indonesia. The so-called product of the university is the Vision and Mission that carries intended and aligned message to its target readers/customers. Therefore, this research aims at mapping the semantic profile of University’s Vision and Mission. Analysing this issue, qualitative-descriptive method was implemented to break-down the message of the product function. The results showed that the product clusters the message into general structure of the product, open word class clustering, and word clustering based on meaning association. The semantics then voluntarily specifies particular strategies based on its meaning association. Additionally, the findings suggested that the product function was discovered by analysing the descriptive words in the Vision and Missions. From this discovery, the product can then be mapped into its function class and type. This then specifies possible strategies implemented in “marketing” the product. From the result, it can be concluded that mapping out the message and strategy of the product can best aid universities in improving their language design in every product they have.

For foreign students, the Mandarin time aspect “着zhe” is a common and relatively difficult grammar point to grasp. The research method used is a quantitative method and a qualitative descriptive method to describe, identify the types of mistakes made by Indonesian learners in the learning time aspect “着zhe”. The data collection technique used is purposive sampling, i.e. Mandarin language learners at the University of Nanchang, China, which had received writing, grammar and structure, and syntax courses. The purpose of this technique is to obtain relevant data in order to solve the problem of learning Mandarin, especially regarding the time aspect “着 zhe”. The results of the relevant questionnaire show that Indonesian students lack basic knowledge of time aspects and they did not understand or forget the rules of time aspect. So, they use Indonesian grammar to answer the Mandarin time aspect  “着 zhe” questionnaire. This is indicated by the results of the questionnaire given, there are 3 forms of performance errors above 50%, i.e. misuse error has 65%, a misordering error has 60%, an added error has 55% and there is 1 form error below 50% namely omission error, has 45%. The Conclusions of time aspect Mandarin "着 zhe" is a form of Mandarin grammar that is often used. This time aspect "着 zhe" has several rules in matching with other words. To understand this, Indonesian students need to learn step by step and perseverance in study and practice, so they can understand the uses of time aspect "着 zhe".

The objective of this study is to investigate morphological system of Toba Batak language from the view of generative transformational study. The major issue in this microlinguistic study is word formations through the processes of affixation, reduplication, and compounding. Most studies done morphologically are structural based theory which explore language phenomena unsatisfactorily. For instance, in Indonesian language the following forms are never found: *ambilan “something taken”, *berpesawat “go by aeroplane”, *keobatan “being dead or sick because of consuming too much medicine”. We, on the other hand, will find the words kiriman “something sent”, bersepeda “go by bicycle”, keracunan “being dead or sick because of consuming something poisonous”. In Toba Batak language, for example, we will not find the words *lehonan “a give”, *marsintua “visit a church functionary to consult something”, *mamiso “use a knife to cut something”. Whereas the forms tongosan “something sent”, mardatu “go to a shaman to ask for help”, and manakkul “use a hoe to do the farm” are actual words that have been used by Toba Batak language speakers. Based on the Toba Batak language phenomena above, the most relevant theory to be applied to treat such problems and the like exhaustively from descriptive to explanatory adequacy is generative morphology. In so doing, this study rests on the theory of generative morphology proposed by Halle (1973), Aronoff (1976), Scalise (1984), and Dardjowidjojo (1988). The theory requires four separated components, they are: (1) List of Morphemes, (2) Word Formation Rules, (3) Filter, and (4) Dictionary. Generative morphology has predictive power to generate actual words and potential words. The method of the study that will be applied is qualitative descriptive method, that is, a kind of linguistic method to describe language phenomena naturally without manipulation. This research will be conducted in 4 regencies in North Sumatra, they are: (1) Samosir Regency, (2) Toba Samosir Regency, (3) Humbang Hasundutan Regency, and (4) North Tapanuli Regency. There are three types of data that will be collected in this study, they are: (1) oral, (2) written, and (3) intuition. Oral data will be collected by observing, interviewing, listening attentively, and chatting with the informants. Written data will be originated from story books in Toba Batak language and bible in Toba Batak language. Intuition data will be based on the writer’s intuition because the writer is a native Toba Batak language speaker. The data will be analyzed using equal and distributional methods.

The research informants were the Chair of the Daily Management Board, Conductor, and Members of the USU Consolation Choir. Data analysis was performed using qualitative data analysis and with technical inductive analysis. Qualitative research is basically building theory, so in this study there is a new theory that is built namely "Service Management". Service here means that organizational management does not expect profits, but the organization still exists. USU's Consolatio Choir, an informal organization, from the outset of planning, the organization has presented the organization's vision and mission to prospective members from USU students and alumni, which in its implementation, the organization's mission went well and everything that was done selflessly and feared God . After the evaluation monitoring, there were still a few weaknesses in non-technical management by BPH. Conclusion of research, choirs can be formed from USU students, or can even be formed from any group who wants to sing in a choir.
