The article discusses the morphological changes of birch trees (Betula pendula Roth.) due to bacterial cancer that grow in the artificial forest «Green Belt» surrounding the city of Nur — Sultan. Kernel samples were taken from diseased tree trunks, isolated bacterial cultures were grown in nutrient medium and given cultural and morphological characteristics. Extraction of cores from diseased birch trunks, isolation of pure strains of the pathogen, molecular identification of ribosomal RNA 16S nucleotide chains and comparison of these results with relevant data from the international database Gene Bank are carried out using modern methods in the field of bacteriology and botany. The molecular characteristics of the isolated bacterial strains corresponded to 96.72 % of the typical strain Dickeya dadantii based on the international Gene Bank.

INTRODUCTION. Among systemic vasopathies in children, IgA vasculitis Henoch Schoenlein (HS) is the most common, according to various authors, kidney damage is noted in 25-80 % and usually determines the prognosis of the disease.THE AIM of the study was to analyze clinical, laboratory, immunological, morphological characteristics, features of the course and treatment of nephritis associated with IgA vasculitis HS in children, as well as factors affecting the prognosis.PATIENTS AND METHODS. The study included 31 patients with morphologically verified nephritis due to IgA vasculitis HS (18 – boys, 13 – girls) aged 3 to 17 years, who were monitored at the Nephrology Department of the "2nd Children's City Clinical Hospital" of the National Center for Pediatric Nephrology and Renal Replacement therapy in Minsk from 2010 to 2019 yrs.The following parameters were analyzed: the clinical variant of kidney damage, laboratory tests (including the study of BAFF, RANTES lymphocyte activation molecules, pro-inflammatory IL1β, caspase1, TNFα, growth factors VEGF, TGF), 24 hours monitoring and office blood pressure measurements, ECHO cardiography with indicescalculation, ultrasound of the carotid arteries with the thickness of intima-media complex, morphological changes in the renal tissue, as well as treatment regimens.RESULTS. The contribution of deGal-IgA1, markers of T and B lymphocytes activation, pro-inflammatory and profibrotic molecules in the development of the disease is shown. Arterial hypertension was registered in 42 % of children, signs of heart remodeling according to the calculated indices in 19,3 %. Decrease level of adiponectin, vitamin D, leptin, increase concentration of obestatin, Pro-BNP, hs-CRP, and TSAT indicator classify patients with nephritis due to IgA vasculitis HS at moderate risk for the developmentof cardio-vascular disorders, which suggests the need for timely correction.CONCLUSION. In most cases, nephritis with IgA vasculitis HS has a benign course with rare relapses and progression to the end stage of chronic kidney disease (6,5 %).

Forest health problems arising from climate change, pests and pathogens are a threat to the main timber tree species. As a result, silver birch (Betula pendula Roth) has become a precious asset for meeting oncoming forestry challenges in western Europe. However, silviculture guidelines to produce high-value birch logs in this region are lacking. Producing large-sized birch trunks requires crown release, i.e., removing crown competitors around selected target trees. These interventions are currently seldom carried out or else too late when the growth potential of the trees has already diminished. This study set out to ascertain the diameter at breast height (dbh) that could be reached by crown-released birch, determine dbh-associated crown diameters, and further characterize the gain obtained from early crown release on birch dbh growth. We measured 704 birch trees that had undergone crown release in 38 naturally regenerated pure birch stands in southern Belgium and in northeastern France. We then evaluated the variation in stem and crown diameter, and analyzed increments in response to the earliness of the interventions in three subsamples, also compared with control target birch. We found that trees with a dbh of 50 cm could be grown within 60 years. Based on crown diameter, to produce 40, 50 and 60 cm dbh trunk, the distance required between target birch trees at the end of the rotation was around 8, 10 and 12 m. With no intervention and in ordinary dense birch regenerations, the dbh increment was found to decline once the stand reached age 4–7 years. Starting crown release in stands aged 4–5 years can double the dbh increment of target trees and provide a continual gain that may last up to 20 years. When birch crowns are released after 9–12 years, it may already be too late for them to recover their best growth rate. Our contribution should help complete emerging guidelines in support of birch silviculture development.

The morphological changes that occur in myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD) involve various components, ultimately leading to the impairment of mitral valve (MV) function. In this context, intrinsic mitral annular abnormalities are increasingly recognized, such as a mitral annular disjunction (MAD), a specific anatomical abnormality whereby there is a distinct separation between the mitral annulus and the left atrial wall and the basal portion of the posterolateral left ventricular myocardium. In recent years, several studies have suggested that MAD contributes to myxomatous degeneration of the mitral leaflets, and there is growing evidence that MAD is associated with ventricular arrhythmias and sudden cardiac death. In this review, the morphological characteristics of MAD and imaging tools for diagnosis will be described, and the clinical and functional aspects of the coincidence of MAD and myxomatous MVP will be discussed.

The article presents data on the long-term effect (nine months) of a silicon compound supplied with drinking water – nonahydrate sodium metasilicate (10 mg/l in terms of silicon), on CD68-positive macrophages in the liver and spleen of laboratory rats. Changes in the morphological characteristics of this cell population were found. There was a decrease in the average cell area (in the liver of the control group of rats, the average macrophage area was 179.23±5.94 microns2, and in the group receiving silicon with drinking water – 117.04±3.35 microns2; in the spleen-136.02±3.93 microns2 and 103.44±2.8 microns2, respectively). Macrophages in the liver preparations of the experimental group of rats had a fewer processes and a darker cytoplasmic membrane. The number of macrophages in the liver per unit area was comparable, for the control group of rats it was 18.78±1.24, and for the rats that received with water with the addition of silicon – 19.41±0.75 cells. CD68+ macrophages of the red splenic pulp in laboratory rats that received silicon also underwent the following morphological changes: they were located in a denser way and had fewer processes, while the number of macrophages per unit area was 73.7±2.3 for the control group, 91.6±5.0-for the experimental group, respectively. The distance between them did not change. There was a change in the intensity of CD68 expression on the surface of the cytoplasmic membrane and in the cytoplasm of liver and spleen macrophages. These changes can be interpreted as the adaptive ability of liver and spleen macrophages to silicon introduced with drinking water. Given the heterogeneity of the macrophage population in the liver and spleen, further studies using markers for different subpopulations of macrophages are needed to clarify their role in the response of tissues to silicon supplied with drinking water.

Blueberry (Vaccinium virgatum), an economically important small fruit crop, is characterized by its highly nutritive compounds and high content and wide diversity of bioactive compounds (Miller et al. 2019). In September 2020, an unknown leaf blight disease was observed on Rabbiteye blueberry at the Agricultural Science and Technology Park of Jiangxi Agricultural University in Nanchang, China (28°45'51"N, 115°50'52"E). Disease surveys were conducted at that time, the results showed that disease incidence was 90% from a sampled population of 100 plants in the field, and this disease had not been found at other cultivation fields in Nanchang. Leaf blight disease on blueberry caused the leaves to shrivel and curl, or even fall off, which hindered floral bud development and subsequent yield potential. Symptoms of the disease initially appeared as irregular brown spots (1 to 7 mm in diameter) on the leaves, subsequently coalescing to form large irregular taupe lesions (4 to 15 mm in diameter) which became curly. As the disease progressed, irregular grey-brown and blighted lesion ran throughout the leaf lamina from leaf tip to entire leaf sheath and finally caused dieback and even shoot blight. To identify the causal agent, 15 small pieces (5 mm2) of symptomatic leaves were excised from the junction of diseased and healthy tissue, surface-sterilized in 75% ethanol solution for 30 sec and 0.1% mercuric chloride solution for 2 min, rinsed three times with sterile distilled water, and then incubated on potato dextrose agar (PDA) at 28°C for 5-7 days in darkness. Five fungal isolates showing similar morphological characteristics were obtained as pure cultures by single-spore isolation. All fungal colonies on PDA were white with sparse creeping hyphae. Pycnidia were spherical, light brown, and produced numerous conidia. Conidia were 10.60 to 20.12 × 1.98 to 3.11 µm (average 15.27 × 2.52 µm, n = 100), fusiform, sickle-shaped, light brown, without septa. Based on morphological characteristics, the fungal isolates were suspected to be Coniella castaneicola (Cui 2015). To further confirm the identity of this putative pathogen, two representative isolates LGZ2 and LGZ3 were selected for molecular identification. The internal transcribed spacer region (ITS) and large subunit (LSU) were amplified and sequenced using primers ITS1/ITS4 (Peever et al. 2004) and LROR/LR7 (Castlebury and Rossman 2002). The sequences of ITS region (GenBank accession nos. MW672530 and MW856809) showed 100% identity with accessions numbers KF564280 (576/576 bp), MW208111 (544/544 bp), MW208112 (544/544 bp) of C. castaneicola. LSU gene sequences (GenBank accession nos. MW856810 to 11) was 99.85% (1324/1326 bp, 1329/1331 bp) identical to the sequences of C. castaneicola (KY473971, KR232683 to 84). Pathogenicity was tested on three blueberry varieties (‘Rabbiteye’, ‘Double Peak’ and ‘Pink Lemonade’), and four healthy young leaves of a potted blueberry of each variety with and without injury were inoculated with 20 μl suspension of prepared spores (106 conidia/mL) derived from 7-day-old cultures of LGZ2, respectively. In addition, four leaves of each variety with and without injury were sprayed with sterile distilled water as a control, respectively. The experiment was repeated three times, and all plants were incubated in a growth chamber (a 12h light and 12h dark period, 25°C, RH greater than 80%). After 4 days, all the inoculated leaves started showing disease symptoms (large irregular grey-brown lesions) as those observed in the field and there was no difference in severity recorded between the blueberry varieties, whereas the control leaves showed no symptoms. The fungus was reisolated from the inoculated leaves and confirmed as C. castaneicola by morphological and molecular identification, fulfilling Koch’s postulates. To our knowledge, this is the first report of C. castaneicola causing leaf blight on blueberries in China. The discovery of this new disease and the identification of the pathogen will provide useful information for developing effective control strategies, reducing economic losses in blueberry production, and promoting the development of the blueberry industry.

Morpho-molecular identification and pathogenicity test on fungal parasites of guava root-knot nematode eggs in Lampung, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 21: 1108-1115. This study aimed to obtain and discover the identity of the species of fungal egg parasites of root-knot nematodes (RKN), which have a high pathogenic ability causing major losses in vegetable crops. The exploration of the fungi was carried out in 2016 and 2018 from Crystal guava plantations in East Lampung, Central Lampung, Tanggamus, and NirAma, a commercial product that has been used for controlling Meloidogyne sp. in Indonesia. Identification was carried out based on morphological characteristics and molecular-based gene sequential analysis of Intergenic Transcribed Spacer (ITS) 1 and ITS 4. A pathogenicity test was carried out in vitro and in a greenhouse using tomato plants as indicator plants. In the in vitro test, observations were made on the percentage of infected RKN eggs. The observations in the greenhouse test were carried out on RKN populations in the soil and roots of tomato plants, root damage (root knots), and damage intensity due to RKN infection. The exploration resulted in five isolates of fungal egg parasites of RKN from the guava plantations in East Lampung (2), Central Lampung (1), Tanggamus (1), and from the isolation results of commercial products (1). The isolates were given codes as B4120X (PT GGP PG1), B3010 (PT GGP PG4), B412G (PT GGP PG 4), B01TG (Tanggamus), and BioP (Commercial products). Based on their morphological characteristics, the isolates were classified into the genus of Paecilomyces. The results of molecular identification showed that the discovered fungi were Purpureocillium lilacinum (Thom.) Luangsa Ard. (Syn. Paecilomyces lilacinus (Thom.) Samson.). Based on the in vitro tests, the five fungal isolates were able to parasitize RKN eggs at 86.4-100%. In the greenhouse test, all isolates significantly suppressed nematode populations in the soil and tomato roots, inhibited the formation of root knots, and produced lower damage intensity compared to controls. Among all the isolates tested, B01TG had the best ability to infect nematode eggs (99.5%), suppressing the formation of root knots, nematode population in the soil and the roots of tomato plants, and the damage intensity compared to other isolates.

Sweet potato [Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam], is an extremely versatile vegetable that possesses high nutritional values. It is also a valuable medicinal plant having anti-cancer, antidiabetic, and anti-inflammatory activities. In July 2020, leaf spot was observed on leaves of sweet potato in Nanchang, China (28°45'51"N, 115°50'52"E), which affected the growth and development of the crop and caused tuberous roots yield losses of 25%. The disease incidence (total number of diseased plants / total number of surveyed plants × 100%) was 57% from a sampled population of 100 plants in the field. Symptomatic plants initially exhibited small, light brown, irregular-shaped spots on the leaves, subsequently coalescing to form large irregular brown lesions and some lesions finally fell off. Fifteen small pieces (each 5 mm2) of symptomatic leaves were excised from the junction of diseased and healthy tissue, surface sterilized in 75% ethanol solution for 30 sec and 0.1% mercuric chloride solution for 2 min, rinsed three times with sterile distilled water and incubated on potato dextrose agar (PDA) plates at 28°C in darkness. A total of seven fungal isolates with similar morphological characteristics were obtained as pure cultures by single-spore isolation. After 5 days of cultivation at 28°C, dark brown or blackish green colonies were observed, which developed brown, thick-walled, simple, or branched, and septate conidiophores. Conidia were 18.28 to 24.91 × 7.46 to 11.69 µm (average 21.27 × 9.48 µm, n = 100) in size, straight or slightly curved, middle cell unequally enlarged, brown to dark brown, apical, and basal cells slightly paler than the middle cells, with three septa. Based on morphological characteristics, the fungal isolates were suspected to be Curvularia plantarum (Raza et al. 2019). To further confirm the identification, three isolates (LGZ1, LGZ4 and LGZ5) were selected for molecular identification. The internal transcribed spacer region (ITS), glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate-dehydrogenase (GAPDH), and translation elongation factor 1-alpha (EF1-α) genes were amplified and sequenced using primers ITS1/ITS4 (Peever et al. 2004), gpd1/gpd2 (Berbee et al. 1999), EF-983F/EF-2218R (Rehner and Buckley 2005), respectively. The sequences of ITS region of the three isolates (accession nos. MW581905, MZ209268, and MZ227555) shared 100% identity with those of C. plantarum (accession nos. MT410571-72, MN044754-55). Their GAPDH gene sequences were identical (accession nos. MZ224017-19) and shared 100% identity with C. plantarum (accession nos. MN264120, MT432926, and MN053037-38). Similarly, EF1-α gene sequences were identical (accession nos. MZ224020-22) and had 100% identity with C. plantarum (accession nos. MT628901, MN263982-83). A maximum likelihood phylogenetic tree was built based on concatenated data from the sequences of ITS, GAPDH, and EF-1α by using MEGA 5. The three isolates LGZ1, LGZ4, and LGZ5 clustered with C. plantarum. The fungus was identified as C. plantarum by combining morphological and molecular characteristics. Pathogenicity tests were conducted by inoculating a conidial suspension (106 conidia/ml) on three healthy potted I. batatas plants (five leaves wounded with sterile needle of each potted plant were inoculated). In addition, fifteen wounded leaves of three potted plants were sprayed with sterile distilled water as a control. All plants were maintained in a climate box (12 h light/dark) at 25°C with 80% relative humidity. All the inoculated leaves started showing light brown flecks after 7 days, whereas the control leaves showed no symptoms. The pathogenicity test was conducted three times. The fungus was reisolated from all infected leaves of potted plants and confirmed as C. plantarum by morphological and molecular identification, fulfilling Koch’s postulates. To our knowledge, this is the first report of C. plantarum causing leaf spot on sweet potato in China. The discovery of this new disease and the identification of the pathogen will contribute to the disease management, provide useful information for reducing economic losses caused by C. plantarum, and lay a foundation for the further research of resistance breeding.

The fluctuating asymmetry (FA) in Betula pendula Roth was estimated as an integrated measure of five morphometric characteristics of a lamina. Samples were collected in seven cities that differ both in climatic conditions, moderately to sharply continental. In total, 33 ecotopes were distinguished with various level of anthropogenic load. The statistical data processing involved correlation, one-way and factorial ANOVA, regression analyses, and principal component analysis (PCA). The impact of 25 climatic and anthropogenic factors on the FA value was considered. In most urban ecotopes, the integrated fluctuating asymmetry (IFA) value was higher than in natural biotopes of the same region. No significant inter-annual differences in IFA values were found. FA dependence on traffic load is noted to be statistically significant. The covariation analysis of IFA, climatic, and anthropogenic variables in various urban ecotopes revealed the impact of three groups of factors that together explain 93% of the variance in environmental parameters. The complex analysis clearly arranged the studied ecotopes by pollution gradient and climatic patterns. The primary effect of the total anthropogenic load on the developmental stability of B. pendula results in an IFA increase. IFA can play a key role in bioindication assessment of environmental quality. The climatic factors have no significant effect on the developmental stability of B. pendula in urban conditions.

The world’s largest macroalgal blooms, Ulva prolifera, have appeared in the Yellow Sea every summer on different scales since 2007, causing great harm to the regional marine economy. In this study, the Normalized Difference of Vegetation Index (NDVI) index was used to extract the green tide of Ulva prolifera from MODIS images in the Yellow Sea in 2016–2018, to investigate its spatiotemporal patterns and to calculate its occurrence probability. Using the standard deviational ellipse (SDE), the morphological characteristics of the green tide, including directionality and regularity, were analyzed. The results showed that the largest distribution and coverage areas occurred in 2016, with 57,384 km2 and 2906 km2, respectively and that the total affected region during three years was 163,162 km2. The green tide drifted northward and died out near Qingdao, Shandong Province, which was found to be a high-risk region. The coast of Jiangsu Province was believed to be the source of Ulva prolifera, but it was probably not the only one. The regularity of the boundary shape of the distribution showed a change that was opposite to the variation of scale. Several sharp increases were found in the parameters of the SDE in all three years. In conclusion, the overall situation of Ulva prolifera was still severe in recent years, and the sea area near Qingdao became the worst hit area of the green tide event. It was also shown that the sea surface wind played an important part in its migration and morphological changes.

Rice is used as a staple food in different areas of world, especially in China. In recent years, rice seedlings have been affected seriously by symptoms resembling bacterial palea browning (BPB) in Heilongjiang Province. To isolate and identify the pathogenic bacteria responsible for the disease, 40 bacterial strains were isolated from diseased rice seedlings collected from the four major accumulative-temperature zones of rice fields cultivated in Heilongjiang Province, and these were identified as 13 species based on morphological characteristics and 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) gene sequences. Inoculation of all the isolates on healthy rice seedlings showed that the nine Enterobacter cloacae isolates were the pathogens causing typical symptoms of BPB, including yellowing to pale browning, stunting, withering, drying, and death. Moreover, the nine E. cloacae isolates could also cause symptoms of bacterial disease on the seedlings of soybean (Glycine max), maize (Zea mays L.), and tomato (Solanum lycopersicum). Phylogenetic analysis based on the 16S rRNA gene sequences and phenotypic and biochemical characteristics indicated that these nine pathogenic isolates were E. cloacae. In addition, analysis of the sequences of four housekeeping genes (rpoB, gyrB, infB, and atpD) from the selected strain SD4L also assigned the strain to E. cloacae. Therefore, E. cloacae is the pathogen causing disease of rice seedlings in Heilongjiang Province, which we propose to classify as a form of BPB. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to identify E. cloacae as a causal agent of BPB in rice.
