Abstract This paper aims to describe women’s role with active participation in waste management within their communities. The environmental awareness education of citizens combined with the application of the ‘4Rs’ principle (reduce, reuse, recycle, and replant) is necessary to develop waste banks to resolve the issue of waste. Waste bank management is predicted to be the best solution for the municipal waste management and increases the public’s awareness of recycling household waste as a waste management strategy. An increase in awareness begins at the community level. Women can be as social capital in community with the capacity to move the community through their active role in waste management activities. This study considered citizens in Karang Resik, Tasikmalaya, West Java, Indonesia and used the emancipatory participation methods of counselling, educating, and training. The results showed that the presence of a waste bank educated residents to be disciplined in managing their waste and provided extra income from waste collection. Moreover, it strengthened the social cohesion for women within the community. This study shows that local female administrators in family welfare empowerment programmes can be used as role models for other women and can provide a significant impact on waste management.

Abstract Improper waste management is a global concern, especially in developing countries where population growth is increasing. Improper waste management is increasingly becoming a global problem that requires a holistic approach to avert health consequences. This research aims to estimate the generation, reduction and disposal of solid waste from households in Sukuta Nema, The Gambia, in the next 25 years. An analytic observation with a cross-sectional design and a dynamic model approach and data from observations in the field were used—a sample size of 125 households was drawn using random sampling. The results showed that household waste generation in Sukuta Nema was 2.07 kg/house/day or 0.0083 m3/house/day. Household waste from Sukuta Nema is predominantly organic, with a proportion of 80.71%. Inorganic waste constitutes about 19.29%. Based on the model scenario for 25 years (2021-2046), the results show that the estimated average rate of waste reduction through waste banks is 5.84%, the rate of waste reduction through composting scenarios is 64.20%, and the rate of waste reduction through a combined scenario between a waste bank and composting is 70.04%. The best waste management tool to use ineffective waste reduction is the combination scenario.

ABSTRACT Sanur Kaja Village has a special waste management facility for processing waste produced by the village community, namely Depo Cemara. Based on previous research, it is known that activities that are running at Depo Cemara are less efficient because not all village communities sort waste and apply the 3R (reduce, reuse, and recycle) principle in household waste management. This study aims to identify the effectiveness of the waste management system that has been implemented by the people of Sanur Kaja Village by comparing the amount of waste managed by households with the 3R principle with the amount of waste wasted in order to obtain a percentage of waste reduction. Data collection was obtained by distributing questionnaires to respondents who were determined by purposive sampling technique. The data obtained were then calculated by analyzing the mass balance of waste and then further analyzed using descriptive statistical analysis methods. The results of research on 96 households show that community-based waste management is still not effective because the percentage of waste reduction that occurs in one day only 22,5 percent and respondents who sort household waste are 44 percent. The community agreed to the plan to implement the 3R principle in household waste management and considered it important to add supporting facilities for waste management.

Currently, there are still problems occurring in waste management activities in Pangkalpinang City. Solid waste that is scattered in the City of Pangkalpinang is caused by waste that has not been transported and handled. TPA Parit Enam's capacity, which serves solid waste in Pangkalpinang City, will decrease every year due to an overload of incoming waste generation. Currently, the City of Pangkalpinang aggressively implements a waste management policy at the source or the 3R program, including waste bank activities and waste processing at reduce, reuse and recycle (3R) landfills. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of household waste reduction activities on the current use of the Parit Enam landfill in Pangkalpinang City in each of the scenarios that were compiled. The compilation model uses Powersim Studio 2005. The dynamic analysis shows that the activities that follow the waste at the source and respect what happens in TPS 3R Pangkalpinang City can affect TPA Parit Enam's useful life and produce a suitable scenario to be applied in the waste management activities of Pangkalpinang City. Scenario C (Optimistic), the valuable life of Parit Enam Landfillreaches 2023, and scenario C (Optimistic) can reduce the amount of waste transported by 29.65% compared to scenario A (Business as Usual). Besides, the proportion of household waste reduction reached 48% at the end of the simulation year.

As rural and subsistence households in the Global South take on the consumption habits of industrialized countries, shifting consumption patterns have contributed to cascades of nonbiodegradable solid waste overwhelming the ability of households, municipal authorities, and governments to manage. As global capitalism expands around the world, spiritual ecology approaches to waste and pollution can provide deeper insight into the attitudes and practices that create a “throw away” society. In rural southern Bhutan, the revered Buddhist teacher, Dzongsar Jamyang Khyentse Rinpoche, initiated a waste reduction project based on Bhutan’s guiding development philosophy of Gross National Happiness. Through engaging cultural and spiritual values, and drawing on the inspirational qualities of social and spiritual leaders, the Samdrup Jongkhar Initiative’s Zero Waste project is an example of spiritual ecology activism for household waste management and waste reduction.
