Various environmental problems that have occurred lately are more or less caused by the problem of garbage and waste from various activities of living things, especially humans. Therefore, good waste management is one of the solutions to current environmental problems. One of the main problems faced by partners is plastic waste management. Based on a preliminary field study conducted by the team, it was found that until now there had been no waste management activities carried out by the residents of Baros Village, both plastic waste management related to waste banks and plastic waste sorting. In this regard, one of the innovative solutions for plastic waste management is to apply the circular economy principle by sorting plastic waste and then managing and developing it to create a circular economy, which is recycling plastic waste into a product of economic value, so that can help people's economic life. In this case, through a circular economy approach, karang taruna gets socialization of a circular economy as a foundation in managing plastic waste. The activity began with coordination with officials in Baros Village and the board of the Setia Youth Organization, pretest, counseling, and continued with a posttest. The implementation of outreach activities is carried out online and only involves the karang taruna administrators due to the COVID-19 pandemic condition. From the results of the activities carried out, members of the karang taruna understand the importance of managing plastic waste to make it a commodity with economic value. One of the growing industries in Indonesia is the woodworking industry. Wood waste is waste or parts of the wood that no longer has economic value but may still be used at different processes and times. The woodworking industry produces wood waste in 22% wood scraps, 8% wood chips, and 10% sawdust. The fundamental problem in the woodworking industry at Sindangmekar Village was the lack of understanding and practice in wood waste management. Through the socialization of wood waste management as planting media, community service aims to increase knowledge regarding wood waste management. In addition, it can improve practice to manage sawdust as a planting media. Furthermore, it has economic value and becomes one of the solutions to financial problems during the COVID-19 pandemic. The socialization presented materials related to wood waste management and practiced making planting media from sawdust. Thirty participants attended this activity. There was a significant increase in pre-and post-test scores after socialization. In conclusion, socialization regarding wood waste management increases knowledge levels in wood artisans and youth alliance at Sindangmekar Village. In addition, participants can manage wood sawdust as a planting medium. As a result, it can increase the selling value of wood waste, and the surrounding environment becomes clean and healthy.

ABSTRACT Sanur Kaja Village has a special waste management facility for processing waste produced by the village community, namely Depo Cemara. Based on previous research, it is known that activities that are running at Depo Cemara are less efficient because not all village communities sort waste and apply the 3R (reduce, reuse, and recycle) principle in household waste management. This study aims to identify the effectiveness of the waste management system that has been implemented by the people of Sanur Kaja Village by comparing the amount of waste managed by households with the 3R principle with the amount of waste wasted in order to obtain a percentage of waste reduction. Data collection was obtained by distributing questionnaires to respondents who were determined by purposive sampling technique. The data obtained were then calculated by analyzing the mass balance of waste and then further analyzed using descriptive statistical analysis methods. The results of research on 96 households show that community-based waste management is still not effective because the percentage of waste reduction that occurs in one day only 22,5 percent and respondents who sort household waste are 44 percent. The community agreed to the plan to implement the 3R principle in household waste management and considered it important to add supporting facilities for waste management.

Solid waste consists of household waste, construction and demolition debris, sanitation residue, and waste from streets. This garbage is generated mainly from residential and commercial complexes. With rising urbanization and change in lifestyle and food habits, the amount of solid waste has been increasing rapidly and its composition changing. Solid waste throws back a light on the culture that produces it and affects the health of the people and the environment surrounding it. Globally, people are discarding growing quantities of waste, and its composition is more complex than ever before, as plastic and electronic consumer products diffuse. Solid wastes are hazards as they adversely affect the living as well as nonliving components of the environment. Advanced and new methods of disposal of solid waste such as pyrolysis, pulverization, incineration, and development of sanitary landfills, etc. are used to solve the problem of managing solid waste. Dumping and burning waste is not acceptable practice from environment and health perspective.

The purpose of this article is to study the factors that affect the participation in management of community waste. Studying the factors affecting community participation in waste management might become a way to find how to manage wastes in the community of the Khaerai Sub-district, Katumban District, Samutsakorn Province of Thailand. This research is designed as a mixed research, that is, both qualitative and quantitative. The tools used to collect quantitative and qualitative data were as follows: 1) The tool used in quantitative collection is a questionnaire divided into 4 sections as follows. Part 1: Analysis of public data on the Khaerai Sub-district Administration Organization. Part 2: Analysis of knowledge on waste management in the community of Khaerai Sub-district. Part 3: Analysis of the factors affecting people’s participation in waste management in the sub-district in question. Part 4: Analysis of household solid waste management in Khaerai Sub-district. 2) Tools used for collection of qualitative data included observations and in-depth interviews on the issues related to community’s involvement in waste management. Our research results demonstrate that most of the people in the sub-district in question are involved in reducing the volume of household waste. They always participate in separation of waste types before disposing them. The study on the solid waste management system of Khaerai Sub-district Administration Organization found that the Administration applies comprehensive community waste management, integrated with waste management. To manage the garbage at its source, dividing the garbage into four categories is used (thus, there are four cans). This helps collecting solid waste more efficiently and thus reduce the contamination of that waste that potentially can be reused. The focus should be maintained on waste sorting and also on organization of the related projects and activities. Additional measures may include providing a new waste facility for future solid waste and also promoting more ways to get rid of waste at its source. Using the participatory principles in waste management gives people more freedom in options’ selection, and this, in its turn, may boost the efficiency of waste collection and waste management overall.
