This study, premised on the assumption that students over-use citations in academic writing, investigated manifestations of over-citation in three PhD theses. A review of diverse pragmatic functions citations serve, helped in the identification of needless citations which lacked consonance with any of the functions. A content-context analysis of the pragmatic function of each citation in the three theses, revealed over-citation and superfluity in the theses. Manifestations of over-citation included: expressing general or common-sense information; using multiple citations to make a simple point; citing sources to express what the writer did; attributing own deductions and inferences to authors; not following-up on citations; repeating concepts and attendant citations in different parts of the thesis; making most thesis sections literature sections; citing individual words not ideas, unclear content of citation, independent citation of each source for the same idea, over-using a source within a paragraph or section, citing back to back, evincing citation density to the eye. On the basis of the varied manifestations of over-citation and the extent of its compromise on the quality of student presentations, the study recommends sustained efforts in developing sound academic writing skills even at postgraduate levels, and sensitisation of students to pragmatic purposes citations should serve.

In the academic context, lecturers often describe students’ academic writing as very poor whereas the students themselves affirm not to understand the lecturers’ expectations with regard to ‘good writing skills’. This is a report on a study conducted in Rwanda to explore students and lecturers’ expectations of good academic writing. The investigation is underpinned by recent developments in academic writing theories. Based on a qualitative approach and a case study methodology, data were collected by analysing key teaching materials, visiting classes and interviewing academics and students. The findings revealed that lecturers’ conception of teaching and learning academic writing is underpinned by an autonomous view - based on discrete skills. It is recommended that the lecturers’ understanding of the academic literacies approach should be properly developed to meet the expected literacy competence goals. Cultural differences make translators censor some parts that considered as taboo, abusive, and inappropriate in the culture of the target language. Censorship carried out by deleting and reducing words, phrases, or sentences in subtitles. The aims of this research are finding words, phrases, and sentences that censored, factors causing censorship and the impact of censorship on the quality of translation. This research uses a descriptive qualitative research method with a fixed case study form. The result shows that censorship was carried out by translators because of two main causes, namely self-censorship and translator's capacity. The results also showed that most of the data was censor because of self-censorship. The translators choose to delete or reduce because of four things, namely swearing words, emphasized, sexual references, and repetitions. Meanwhile, the impact of censorship on the quality of translation shows that most of the data is inaccurate, acceptable, and has high legibility.

Purpose All built facility begins to show signs of deterioration immediately after the facility is completed and put to use, thus necessitating routine maintenance. Increase in defects due to age, usage, and other factors, requires extensive maintenance activities known as renovation. The data used for a typical renovation plan can be collected using the condition assessment (CA) tool which depends on physical inspection of the defects or through a facility condition index which hinges on harnessing and analyzing the information in the operational history of the facility. The purpose of this paper is to examine the quality of a typical renovation plan using both tools. Design/methodology/approach The single case study of qualitative research was adopted. The data were collected through the principle of semi-structured questionnaire complemented with interviews and document analysis. The documents include periodic operational reports and a CA report used for planned renovation exercise of the Facilities Management (FM) Unit in a higher education institution in South Africa. Findings The findings revealed that although the FM Unit produces periodic reports, but there was no evidence of detailed analysis of the reports. Therefore, the programmed renovation exercises are based purely on the information from a CA. Research limitations/implications This research is a single site case study of qualitative research; the data collected are limited and not sufficient for generalization of the results. Furthermore, the lack of record of the analysis of the operational history in the periodic reports negatively affected the computation of facilities condition index (FCI). Thus it was not possible to demonstrate the strength of FCI over CA from empirical information. Originality/value The quality of a typical renovation plan is influenced by the tool used for data collection. Although the CA tool is commonly used, experience shows that the renovation exercise developed from such records is prone to many execution setbacks, such as frequent scope changes and the associated cost and time overruns. These setbacks can be minimized if the FCI is used as the tool for data collection.

Architecture is the art of shaping space, system, and technology. A close relationship is established between the building and its user, as the facility provides shelter and communicates with the inhabitants by meanings encoded in the form. The reception of architecture occurs through an ideological narrative and the quality of construction and material solutions. Contemporary pro-environmental postulates exert an increasingly clear influence on how architecture is shaped, especially on its aesthetic and semantic solutions. In this context, the article refers to the interdependence between art and technology in shaping the architecture of meanings through detail. The work aims to expand qualitative research on shaping contemporary detail in the context of pro-environmental trends in architecture. The detail was selected based on its clear message—its meaning provides the leading feature of the structure, both in technical (engineering solutions) and semantic (narrative) terms. The article provides an attempt to answer the question of how a semantic detail should be shaped, with the account to contemporary concepts on sustainable development architecture. A synthetic-comparative methodology was adopted; specific groups of completed objects were analyzed in the context of the indicated topics. The conclusions from this part of the work constitute case study guidelines, which was conducted on the example of an original project.

Kata kunci: pemuliaan stevia, partisipasi petaniABSTRACTThe need for sugar sourced from sugar cane (Sacharum oficinarum L) for household and industrial consumption at the national level occupies the second position after rice. The inability of national production forced the government to import sugar in order to meet the shortage. Import has not solved the problem, even there is an indication that food/beverage industries used synthetic sugar. Hence, desire of the community to find alternative natural low-calorie sweeteners has been growing. One of the sources of sweetener is stevia (Stevia rebudiana). Unpad researchers and breeders genetically modified stevia through induction of gamma rays in order to answer these needs. In order for this commodity to be adaptive and in accordance with the needs of users, breeders involved the community in its development. The purposre of this study was to describe the involvement/participation of users in the development of stevia seeds engineered by Unpad team, to examine factors that have to do with farmer participation in the development of stevia, and to study the factors that are considered in the use of Unpad stevia seeds. This research is descriptive qualitative research with case study techniques. The results showed that farmers' participation in the development of stevia seeds was in the form of ideas, physical contributions and financial contributions. Participation cannot be separated from several factors, namely the cooperative support, which functions as a place of results, the farmer group as a place of learning, and member farmers as actors who maintain the quantity and quality of production. The use of Unpad stevia seeds is considered if technically, developed stevia is short-lived, has a high sugar yield, is adaptive to the environment, and has quite a lot of branches. Keywords: stevia breeding, farmer participation
