The idea of providing additional assistance and support to international students is being widely popularized in the global scientific community. This is due to the fact that the number of these students is constantly increasing and they have to encounter numerous problems. There are three main areas of international students’ assistance: didactic assistance focused on the learning process; psychological assistance as the prevention and solution of psychological and emotional problems; sociocultural assistance dealing with adaptation to new environment. This article presents the results of the study directed by the following research questions: whether university teachers are involved in assisting international students, what strategies they prioritize, and what categories of teachers are more focused on providing assistance. The group survey covering 24.2% of teachers of the Interstate Educational Institution of Higher Education “Belarusian-Russian University” resulted in the following conclusions. 1. Most of university teachers are aware of international students’ problems and provide them with additional assistance and support. 2. Teachers with little pedagogical experience, female respondents, and teachers without a scientific degree are more actively involved in assisting international students. 3. The most popular strategies of didactic assistance were explaining details of students’ self-directed work, using lecture presentations and encouraging participation in individual consultations. 4. In order to psychologically support international students, teachers strive to tolerate their speech errors, help them in speaking and create a positive atmosphere in the class. 5. Within the framework of sociocultural assistance, teachers may give students the opportunity to present their homeland, encourage intercultural communication in seminars and workshops, and speak about the country of study.

This chapter discusses the purpose and role of higher education institutions in the creation of highly qualified human resources for the globalized 21st century. As technology and societies change and evolve, universities must adapt and modify their offerings to students who need to be more marketable in an ever more competitive marketplace. As economic conditions have propelled emerging economies as the main engines of growth for the next decades, it is imperative the higher education institutions in the form of business schools, both in developed and emerging markets, create the necessary background and educational opportunities for young students entering the working world. These will include skills in intercultural communication and strategy, as well as new and different ways of negotiating between countries and among companies.

There is growing interest in understanding how international students can best be enabled to adjust to, participate in and learn within Higher Education (HE). This paper explores literature and examines findings from exploratory interviews in a UK institution in order to investigate the contribution the Peer Assisted Study Sessions (PASS) scheme makes to this process.Interviews with international students were analysed using Lave and Wenger’s (1991) social-learning model, Communities of Practice (CoP), for exploring the role of PASS in supporting international students’ transition and learning in HE. Using themes of community, practice and participation, findings illuminated the role of PASS in providing international students with an intermediary CoP, providing transition support into the CoP on their course and university life. PASS facilitated their social integration with students of other nationalities, developing relationships with peers and PASS leaders, contributing to an increased sense of belonging to a community. Through the mutual engagement of attendees and leaders, students developed shared language, values and practices relating to their discipline and studying in UK HE. Established PASS leaders shared first year experiences with ‘newcomer’ international students, supporting their transition into UK HE culture and enabling their legitimate peripheral participation to develop further. Participation in PASS fostered students’ engagement with learning activities and independent study habits. Limitations to the study and suggestions for further research are discussed.

The integration of soft skills in training pre-service teachers ensures higher academic performance and provides them with better career opportunities. However, many university teachers pay insufficient attention to developing soft skills in higher education. The article aims to investigate the correlation between the soft skills included in professional teacher training and undergraduates’ viewpoint on soft skills development at university. The authors formulated three research questions: (a) How do English trainee teachers assess their soft skills? (b) How much attention, in students’ opinion, do teachers pay to developing soft skills? (c) Is there a gap between teachers’ work on developing students’ soft skills and trainee teachers’ expectations? To answer these questions, the researchers analized the empirical data received through a questionnaire. The questionnaire was completed by 153 English trainee teachers studying at H.S. Skovoroda Kharkiv National Pedagogical University, Ukraine. The respondents answered two close-ended questions regarding the level of soft skills they believe to possess and the amount of time devoted to soft skills development. The findings suggest that most students consider the level of their soft skills intermediate or high. Nevertheless, a significant number of the respondents still feel that teachers pay insufficient or hardly any attention to improving these skills. It is necessary to conduct further research to analyze university teachers’ viewpoint on improving students’ soft skills and organize the development of soft skills which would meet trainee teachers’ expectations.

This paper reveals the results of the research “Im-plementation models of mentoring and methodolog-ical support for young teachers in the practice of Moscow schools of the State Autonomous Educa-tional Institution of Higher Education of Moscow State Pedagogical University (MCU) in 2019–2020”. This article presents a description of a dual face-to-face and distance model of mentoring for a young teacher with the participation of a pedagogical uni-versity as a platform and organizer of mentoring. This model ensures the integration of a novice spe-cialist into the educational environment of the me-tropolis as a whole, not limited to intra-school men-toring. The elements of the model are the digital platform “MGPU-your mentor”, personal mentoring, full-time system of thematic meetings and discus-sions of young teachers with experts of the modern education system, master classes of university teachers, a club of young teachers, methodological and thematic consulting, refresher courses. The methodological foundations of the mentoring model are determined. The study was carried out as part of the organizational and methodological work “Im-plementation of models of mentoring and methodo-logical support for young teachers in the practice of Moscow schools in the Main Educational Institution of Higher Education MSPU in 2019–2020”. The basis for the work is the Moscow state program “Devel-opment of education in the city of Moscow (“Capital education”)” for 2012–2020.

The article analyzes the role of free choice disciplines in the formation of universal or functional competencies, which are also called soft skills. It has been proven that mastering soft skills ensures both personal success in life and professional implementation, as well as further career growth of a modern graduate of a higher educational institution. Based on the analysis of scientific sources, the main approaches to defining the essence and classification of soft skills in the works of both domestic and foreign scientists are determined and characterized. The publication analyzes and summarizes the ways of forming soft skills among students in the practice of higher educational institutions of Ukraine. Among them: the creation of a special educational environment, the restructuring of the educational process, which is dominated by such types of learning as project, problem-based, etc.; variety of forms and methods of teaching; extracurricular system, etc. It has been proven that a cycle of selective disciplines or author's courses plays an important role in ensuring the formation of soft skills. A significant place among them is occupied by the course "Pedagogy of Success", which in the 2020-2021 academic year was chosen by applicants for the first (bachelor's) level of higher education. The course is aimed at increasing the productivity of independent educational work and a positive attitude towards it among students of higher educational institutions, equipping them with strategies of self-esteem, the formation of a positive "I-concept"; effective distribution of time (time management); search, evaluation and information processing; active reading; improved memorization; submitting your own educational achievements; communication, ways to ensure personal work ability, etc.
