Are anemia, gastrointestinal disorders, and pregnancy outcome associated with pica behavior?

OBJECTIVE: This study was conducted to determine the relationship between pica and anemia, gastrointestinal disorders, as well as pregnancy outcomes in pregnant women. METHODOLOGY: This study was a prospective study carried out between January 2016 and June 2017 and was performed on 226 pregnant women who attended four different health care centers to receive routine prenatal care. Sampling was done considering the inclusion criteria, in two steps: cluster sampling and random sampling. Data collection was done using a researcher-made checklist. The significance level was set at p = 0.05. RESULTS: The average age of the participants was 26.10±6.27. The prevalence of pica in pregnant women in the first, second, and third trimesters was 9.3, 8, and 2.1%, respectively. The most common pica craving among pregnant women was for ice and frozen materials (68.2%). There was a statistically significant relationship between gastrointestinal disorders and anemia with pica (p < 0.001). There was also a significant relationship between birth weights of babies born to mothers with pica and those without pica (p = 0.005). CONCLUSION: Pica in pregnant women had a significant relationship with gastrointestinal disorders and anemia during pregnancy and pregnancy outcomes. Thus, in addition to providing healthcare services, health care professionals should consider patients’ pica practices and make the necessary interventions.

Pregnancy is characterized by complex physiological changes which may adversely affect the oral health and pregnancy outcomes. This study reports a survey on assessing the knowledge, attitude and practice behaviours of gynaecologists and oral health care professionals towards prenatal oral care and barriers limiting the utilization of prenatal oral care health care to pregnant women. The study population comprised of 3 groups: A- Gynaecologists, B- oral health care professionals and C – Pregnant women, 100 in each group. The prevalidated questionnaire included questions about their knowledge, attitude, beliefs and practices regarding oral health care for pregnant women. The data obtained was subjected to statistical analysis using ANOVA test and Pearson’s correlation test. The response rate was 100%. Regarding the association of periodontal disease and adverse pregnancy outcomes, Group A (75%) have high degree of knowledge than B (61%) and C (36%) but the attitude and practice behaviors were significantly high in Group B as compared to Group A and Group C Two-thirds of respondents in both Group A and B (75%) were interested in receiving continuing dental education (CDE) regarding the care of pregnant women.The self-assessed maternal barriers evaluated in this study were lack of knowledge, lack of perceived need.

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends that women exercise throughout pregnancy unless they have a condition-related contraindication. This study’s purpose was to determine if pregnant women perceive receiving exercise counseling by their providers with details of frequency, intensity, type, and time (FITT principle). Women in 2 postpartum care units of a large health care system were invited to complete a voluntary, anonymous survey regarding whether they received exercise counseling during their prenatal care. Survey results were descriptively reported, stratified by demographic variables, and analyzed using Fisher’s exact tests. Of 224 postpartum women surveyed, 130 (58.0%) perceived receiving exercise counseling during pregnancy; 119 (91.5%) did not recall receiving counseling on exercise frequency. Though 165 (73.6%) exercised before becoming pregnant, 64 (38.8%) ceased exercise during pregnancy. Eighty-eight (39.3%) received advice from other sources/non–health care professionals. Privately insured women reported receiving exercise counseling at a higher rate (70.1%) than those on Medicaid (44.8%) or uninsured (40.0%; P = .004). A disproportionate number of pregnant women perceived not receiving adequate prenatal exercise counseling or received incomplete counseling. Women at a socioeconomic disadvantage may be vulnerable. As social determinants of health, structural barriers, and socioeconomic status likely contribute, women may benefit from more targeted inclusive and equitable messaging.

Background: The practices of various health-care professionals have been improvised to accommodate the on-going covid-19 pandemic situation. Different guidelines have been set in place to ease the process of re-opening of non-elective healthcare services like out-patient physiotherapy clinics. Although the measures taken should be guided by evidence based information, major consensus amongst practicing therapists needs to guide the India physiotherapy clinics. Objective: To identify and present the opinions of different physiotherapists about the various strategies for re-opening the out-patient physiotherapy clinics. Methods: An online cross-sectional survey was conducted. Over 169 participants were selected to participate in the survey according to the pre-decided inclusion and exclusion criteria. The data was collected and saved via google forms. Result and conclusion: A majority of respondents had a consensus over different strategies for re-opening the physiotherapy OPDs. These were regarding different measures to be adapted including modifications in the clinic infrastructure and the practice pattern. This would help in smoothly re-instating the physiotherapy services post the covid-19 lockdown.

Abstract Background The Covid-19 pandemic response is influencing maternal and neonatal health care services especially in developing countries. However, the indirect effects of Covid-19 on pregnancy outcomes remain unknown. The aim of the present study was to compare pregnancy outcomes before and after the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic in Iran. Methods We performed a retrospective analysis of the medical records of 2,503 pregnant women with singleton pregnancies, admitted to the maternity department of a women’s hospital in Tehran, Iran, during the pre-Covid-19 pandemic (February 19 to April 19, 2019) and the intra-Covid- 19 pandemic (February 19 to April 19, 2020) period. Results We included 2,503 women admitted to the hospital; 1,287 (51.4 %) were admitted before the Covid-19 lockdown and 1,216 (48.6 %) during the Covid-19 lockdown. There were no significant differences in stillbirth rates (p = 0.584) or pregnancy complications (including preeclampsia, pregnancy-induced hypertension and gestational diabetes) (p = 0.115) between pregnant women in the pre- and intra-pandemic periods. However, decreases in preterm births (p = 0.001), and low birth weight (p = 0.005) were observed in the pandemic period compared to the pre-pandemic period. No significant difference in the mode of delivery, and no maternal deaths were observed during the two time periods. Conclusions In our study we observed a decrease in preterm births and low birth weight, no change in stillbirths, and a rise in the admission rates of mothers to the ICU during the initial Covid-19 lockdown period compared to pre-Covid-19 lockdown period. Further research will be needed to devise plan for immediate post-pandemic care and future health care crises.

Objective: Spontaneous abortion is the most common complication of early pregnancy, affecting up to 20% of recognized pregnancies. Kisspeptin is predominantly released by placental syncytiotrophoblasts, and regulates their placental invasion into the uterine matrices. We aimed to establish an association of serum kisspeptin levels with pregnancy outcomes during the early gestational stage of the first trimester. Method: In this prospective study, 90 pregnant women in their 7 to 8 6/7 gestational weeks were classified into three groups: (i) The control group, consisting of healthy pregnant women (n=30), (ii) the threatened abortion group (n=30), and (iii) the spontaneous abortion group (n=30). The maternal serum samples were analyzed for complete blood count parameters and kisspeptin levels. Results: There was no statistical difference regarding body mass index (BMI) and gestational age (p=0.370). Regarding detailed obstetric notations, including gravida, parity, abortion, and living children, socioeconomic levels, and employment rates, all study groups were comparable (p>0.05, for all). No significant association was found regarding the biochemical parameters of complete blood count, including neutrophil, lymphocyte, and platelet concentrations, as well as neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratios (NLR) and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratios (PLR) (p>0.05, for all). The median serum kisspeptin levels of the study groups did not differ between the groups (p=0.153). Correlation analysis revealed no significant relationship between serum kisspeptin levels and other study parameters in any study groups (p>0.05, for all) Conclusions: We found no statistically significant relationship between serum kisspeptin concentrations and pregnancy outcomes in the early gestational stage of the first trimester, and serum kisspeptin concentrations did not seem to be a reliable marker to distinguish abortion status from viable pregnancy

Abstrak Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk: (1)mendeskripsikan dan menjelaskan hubungan antara motivasi belajar dengan hasil belajar kimia siswa. (2) mengetahui dan menjelaskan besarnya koefisien korelasi antara motivasi belajar dengan hasil belajar kimia siswa. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kuantitatif. Populasi penelitian ini adalah seluruh siswa kelas XI MIPA di SMA Negeri 2 Negara tahun pelajaran 2017/2018 dan sampel penelitian berjumlah 72 orang dengan menggunakan teknik cluster sampling. Data dikumpulkan menggunakan instrumen penelitian berupa kuesioner motivasi belajar yang terdiri dari 20 pernyataan positif dan 15 pernyataan negatif dan data hasil belajar siswamenggunakan nilai UAS siswa. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa(1) terdapat hubungan yang positif dan signifikan antara motivasi belajar siswa pada pembelajaran kimia dengan hasil belajar kimia siswa. (2) Besarnya koefisien korelasi yang diperoleh yaitu sebesar 0,391, yang berarti r hitung yang diperoleh lebih besar dibandingkan dengan r tabel yang telah ditentukan pada taraf signifikansi 5% yaitu 0,229, sehingga Hipotesis Nol (H0) dalam penelitian ini dapat ditolak.Berdasarkan hasil pemaparan diatas, dapat disimpulkan bahwa terdapat hubungan yang positif dan signifikan antara motivasi belajar pada mata pelajaran kimia dengan hasil belajar kimia siswa. Kata kunci: Hasil Belajar, Motivasi Belajar, Pelajaran Kimia AbstractThis study aims to: (1) describe and explain the relationship between learning motivation and student chemistry learning outcomes. (2) knowing and explaining the magnitude of the correlation coefficient between learning motivation and student chemistry learning outcomes. This study uses a quantitative approach. The population of this study was all students of class XI MIPA in SMA Negeri 2 Negara the academic year 2017/2018 and the study sample amounted to 72 people using the cluster sampling technique. The data were collected using the research instrument in the form of a learning motivation questionnaire consisting of 20 positive statements and 15 negative statements and student learning outcomes data using the student UAS value. The results showed that (1) there was a positive and significant relationship between students' learning motivation in chemistry learning and student chemistry learning outcomes. (2) The magnitude of the correlation coefficient obtained is equal to 0.391, which means that the calculated r is greater than the r table that has been determined at the 5% significance level of 0.229, so the Zero Hypothesis (H0) in this study can be rejected. This chapter examines the use of drugs—both legal and illegal–by pregnant women, noting increased medical and legal supervision of pregnancy and women’s substance use and abuse. Many states require health care professionals to report pregnant women who admit to, or are suspected of, using alcohol or other drugs. The result can be involuntary detention commitment for “treatment.” Women have been prosecuted for homicide after they suffer a stillbirth despite weak evidence that the stillbirth was caused by drug use. Prosecution of these women is counterproductive, because it drives pregnant drug users underground, away from both prenatal care and drug treatment.

Abstract Background The results of some studies have indicated the association between food insecurity and certain adverse pregnancy outcomes. The present study aimed to investigate the prevalence of food insecurity in pregnant women and its association with pregnancy outcomes and complications. Methods The present cross-sectional study was conducted on 772 mothers who visited comprehensive health service centers during the first 10 days after delivery in 2018. The tools included the demographic and midwifery information questionnaire and an 18-item questionnaire devised by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The significance level was considered to be 0.05. Results 67.5% of pregnant women had food insecurity. The multivariate analysis showed that birth weight decreased with the increase in the severity of food insecurity, but the reduction was not statistically significant. Based on the results, food insecurity had no statistically significant impact on the mothers’ weight gain pattern (p = 0.13). The risk of hypertension/preeclampsia and anemia was not related to food insecurity. Compared with the food-secure group, the probability of gestational diabetes was 56% lower in the food-insecure group without hunger and 61% lower in the food-insecure group with moderate hunger; however, in the food-insecure group with severe hunger, this probability was 1.5 times more than the food-secure group, which is not statistically significant. Conclusions The prevalence of food insecurity was high in pregnant women. Maternal weight gains during pregnancy and birth weight (despite being statistically insignificant) were affected by this condition; therefore, it is necessary to identify women with food insecurity on their first pregnancy visit; it is also crucial to take steps towards improving their health through allocating a family food basket and nutritional support for these women at least during pregnancy. Due to the limited sample size and inability to control the potential confounders, the association between food insecurity during pregnancy and the incidence of pregnancy complications could not be reached, hence the need for more studies.

Introduction: Breastmilk is the first food for newborns and is the main nutrition for babies. The low level of exclusive breastfeeding is due to the lack of knowledge of mothers about exclusive breastfeeding. Therefore, in order for mother's knowledge to be good, it can be done by providing education about exclusive breastfeeding. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of providing education using online media for pregnant women on the knowledge of mothers in breastfeeding, self-efficacy and the success of breastfeeding alone for one month. Methods: This study used a quasi-experimental design with a pre and post-test nonequivalent control group approach. The sampling technique used probability sampling, which consisted of 44 pregnant women in the third trimester. Collection using a questionnaire and analyzed using the chi square test with a significance level of α ≤ 0.05. Results: This study shows that there is no significant relationship between the provision of online education and maternal knowledge with a p value of 0.056 (α ≥ 0.05). There is a significant relationship between providing online education with maternal self-efficacy with a p value of 0.001 (α ≤ 0.05). There was no significant relationship between the provision of education and the success of breastfeeding for 1 month with a p value of 0.186 (α ≥ 0.05). Conclusion: It is suggested that health walkers can increase educational activities regarding exclusive breastfeeding by using any method and in an appropriate, structured and continuous way with direct or indirect interactions so that the knowledge and self-efficacy of mothers about exclusive breastfeeding will be better.
