This chapter discusses Dickens’s treatment of industry, technology, and invention, forces that were reshaping not only the culture, economics, and geography but also the texture of daily life in nineteenth-century Britain. While the growth of London and other cities demanded innovations in sanitation and public health, revolutionary technologies in transport and communication reshaped the very experience of space and time. Some of Dickens’s most vocal contemporaries saw machinery and factory production as embodying the evils of the age, but Dickens approached technology with a more hopeful sense of its ability to magnify human power, to provoke dreams and wonder, and ultimately perhaps to offer a kind of spiritual meaning. Dickens expresses this rich vision in a range of works, from novels and stories to the essays he wrote and commissioned for his journals.

One of the most influential Turkish literature authors after the post-republic period, Sait Faik Abasıyanık pursued virtue and morality in his literary work, although literary critics have not underlined this aspect of his work. In his non-didactic and open-ended stories, the perception of morality he adopted is quite evident. Analyzing Sait Faik’s selected stories in the context of their temporal and spatial settings, this study aims to resolve the moral equation manifested. In this paper, three randomly selected short stories by Abasiyanik were studied to understand how he perceived morality and how the subject of morality is treated in his select short stories. His short stories The Old Teenager, The White Gold, and Just a Story were studied in terms of how the selected subject, morality, appears in these texts. While analyzing these stories, it is recognized that the author was affected from the space and time in and during which he lived and wrote in Istanbul.

This paper presents a reading of Enrique Lihn’s Diary of Death prioritising how the author inscribes the agony of the poetic subject in relation to the disease of the biographical subject, taking advantage of the possibilities that the autobiographical genre gives to represent death in a situated way and expose the limitations of language. Notion that Lihn developed in his literary work through self-reflexivity, situated poetry, foreignness and reflective intertextuality. Also this paper analyses the dislocation Lihn makes of the private journal, transgressing the space and time of enunciation.

The American poet, novelist and editor, Jeff Vande Zande’s Landscape with Fragmented Figures (2009) is a novel that deals with the contemporary world of art, which brings forth the intricacies of the art forms such as collage, action paintings, and drop cloths that have established a crucial distance between the present and the past world of pre-modern art. As the novel revolves around the world of postmodern visual arts and brings this subject into the literary world, it necessitates an interdisciplinary approach, which not only brings the two different academic disciplines of arts together for a critical appreciation, but also creates a new aesthetic experience in the reader, wherein visual arts is seen through the lens of literature, which helps foreground the hidden patterns and motives behind the art work, and the literary work is appreciated with a greater knowledge and understanding of the practices in and theories of the modern and postmodern art. By looking at the symbiotic relationship between visual art and literature through the novel, this study makes an attempt to contribute to the aesthetic appreciation of the engaging confluence of postmodern visual arts and literature in the contemporary world of art. By analysing the text, the study explores the phenomena that have reduced the difference between the original and copy in the contemporary art-world wherein the artist’s aesthetic sensibility seems to derive from other sources, and thus brings into critical discourse those factors that have determined the use of parody, pastiche, irony, and collage in contemporary art forms.

Manâzilus-Sâ`irîn ilâ al-Haqqil-Mubîn is a literary work of tasawuf which contains 100 steps of climbing to the pleasure of Allah which must be passed by man to seek His pleasure. The 100 maqâmât is divided into ten levels, each level there are ten maqam, and each maqam has their own meanings and functions. For the purposes of this study, only 20 ladders were studied due to space and time constraints. The problem in this research is how the researchers interpret and analyze the 20 steps of climbing based on the perspective of Sufism. The theory used in this research is the Islamic literary theory Taufiq Al-Hakim model that says that Islamic literature comes from Allah, dimension of worship, and mission of Islamic da'wah. Islamic literature comes from God because God is the source of all sources. The method of analysis used in this research is tasawuf method and moral method. The tasawuf method is directed at how the reader expresses the elements of the formal object contained in material objects to hone and educate the human soul and heart in worshiping God and in associating with fellow human beings. The moral method is oriented on how literature regulates human experience and assesses the extent to which experience affects its activities, namely the literary activity that produces Islamic literary works containing contents of Sufism that are suitable for the guidance of human life. The superiority of this book is also seen in the unique writing techniques because the author is able to integrate the verses of the Qur'an with his imagination so that this book of tasawuf looks strong from the way of processing the substance and from the side of the moral message. Thus, the teachings of Sufism in this book become more practical and easier to understand by the reader
