scholarly journals Evaluation of the Development of Gross Motor, Fine Motor, Language, and Personal-Social Skills of Children 6 to 18 Months in Khorramabad based on Denver II Developmental Screening Test

Background: Developmental and behavioral disorders are highly prevalent health conditions in pediatrics. The development of motor, language, and social skills is one of the important issues in developing fundamental skills during the early years of life which can cause the prevalence of developmental disorders if not properly evaluated. The use of standard tools with proper validity and reliability is one of the most important factors that lead to scientific achievements. Therefore, the present study aimed to evaluate the development of gross motor, fine motor, language, and personal-social skills of children 6 to 18 months in Khorramabad based on the Denver II Developmental Screening Test (DDST II). Materials and Methods: A total of 120 (55 girls and 65 boys) children 6 to 18 months participated in the present study in Khorramabad. DDST II (Frankenburg and Dodds, 1990) was used to assess the development of gross, fine motor, language, and individual-social skills. Sampling was performed using the convenience method. Results: No significant difference was observed between gross and fine motor development scores of children in Khorramabad and Denver. Children in Khorramabad were more mature in developing personal-social skills than those in Denver, however, they had a developmental delay in obtaining language skills. Conclusion: DDST II covers a wide range of developmental aspects from birth to 6 years which is recommended to use in health, educational and counseling centers.

ABSTRAK Angka penyimpangan perkembangan pada anak saat ini semakin meningkat. Faktor yang penting untuk mendeteksi penyimpangan perkembangan adalah skrining perkembangan. Sejauh ini beberapa literatur lebih banyak membahas perkembangan pada anak di daerah perkotaan, dan sedikit sekali hasil penelitian yang memaparkan  perkembangan pada anak di daerah pedesaan. Penelitian ini dilakukan untuk mengetahui gambaran perkembangan anak usia 1 bulan – 6 tahun dalam aspek perkembangan personal sosial, adaptif motorik halus, bahasa, dan motorik kasar. Jenis penelitian ini adalah deskriptif kuantitatif. Penelitian dilakukan di Kecamatan Cibiuk Kabupaten Garut. Pengambilan sampel dengan cara purposive sampling, didapatkan 130 responden. Tingkat perkembangan diukur menggunakan Denver Development Screening Test II (DDST II). Analisis data dengan menggunakan distribusi frekuensi. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa sebagian besar anak mengalami perkembangan normal, yaitu usia 1-12 bulan 74% normal, usia >1-3 tahun 64% normal, dan usia >3-6 tahun 65% normal. Sedangkan berdasarkan empat aspek perkembangan didapatkan data bahwa persentase terbesar suspect (dicurigai adanya gangguan) terdapat pada aspek perkembangan personal sosial dialami anak usia >3-6 tahun, presentase suspect perkembangan adaptif-motorik halus terbesar dialami anak usia >3-6 tahun, presentase suspect perkembangan bahasa terbesar dialami anak usia >3-6 tahun, dan presentase suspect perkembangan motorik kasar terbesar dialami anak usia >1-3 tahun. Suspect (dicurigai adanya gangguan) pada tiap aspek perkembangan dipengaruhi oleh berbagai hal, yang paling berperan diantaranya adalah stimulasi. Sehingga gambaran perkembangan saat ini mungkin akan berbeda dengan gambaran perkembangan di masa yang akan datang, apabila anak dilakukan stimulasi. Peneliti merekomendasikan agar perawat meningkatkan diseminasi informasi mengenai stimulasi untuk mengoptimalkan perkembangan pada anak. ABSTRACT Developmental disorders in children is increasing. One of the factors that are important to detect developmental disorders are developmental screening. However, literature mainly discussed on child development in urban areas, and very little research that explained the development of children in rural areas. The aim of this study was to describe children developmental level age 1 month until 6 years in rural areas. The sub variabel that are studied personal social aspect, fine motor-adaftive, language, and gross motor development. The childen development screening can use Denver Development Screening Test II (DDST II), in which categories as normal and suspect. This study conducted in District of Cibiuk, Garut Residence. There were 130 respondent was taken with purposive sampling techique in this study. Design of this study was descriptive. Child development was measured by Denver Developmental Screening Test II. Data analysis was used distribution of frequency. This result of this study showed that most children had normal development level, there were 74% in children age 1-12 month, 64% in children 1-3 years old, and 65% in children >3-6 years old. Based on the developmental aspect, the result showed that the higher precentage of suspect on the personal sosial aspect were in children age >3-6 years old, higher precentage of suspect of the fine motor-adaftive aspect were in children age >3-6 years old, higher precentage of suspect of language aspect were in children age >3-6 years old, and higher precentage of suspect of the gross motor aspect were in children age >1-3 years old. The suspect in  developmental children were influenced by various factor, such as stimulation. Researcher recommend that nurses need to intensified dissemination of information about stimulation in children to optimize growth developmental in children.

There are previous studies in the literature conducted on the effect of play-based math activities on the mathematical skills, language, and cognitive development of preschool children. However, the number of studies conducted to determine the effect of play-based math activities on different areas of development in preschool children was too few. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of play-based math activities on different developmental areas (personal-social, fine motor, language, and gross motor development) of children 48 to 60 months of age. The pretest/posttest quasi-experimental research design with control and experimental groups was employed in this study. The research group of this study is composed of 45 children 22 of whom (10 girls and 12 boys) were in the experimental group and 23 (10 girls and 13 boys) in the control group. Denver II Developmental Screening Test was used as the data collection tool. As a result, it was determined that there was a significant difference between the subscales and pretest-posttest total scores concerning personal-social, fine motor, and language areas in the experimental group, while there was no statistically significant difference in the gross motor subscale. In addition, it was observed that there was statistically no significant difference between pretest–posttest scores concerning personal-social, fine motor, language, gross motor subscales and total scores of the control group. The result revealed that play-based math activities have a positive effect on personal-social, fine motor, language, and gross motor developments of children. Further studies can be planned to investigate the effects of play-based mathematics education integrated with different activities where children can have fun and be physically active on children’s developmental areas.

Early childhood development relies on various micronutrients. We recently reported that home fortification of complementary foods using spirulina reduced the time to attain motor milestones in Zambian infants. The objective of this study is to estimate the long-term associations between spirulina supplementation during the first 1000 days and child gross motor development, fine motor development, language, and personal–social skills at preschool age. We used longitudinal data from a randomized trial conducted in Zambia. In 2015, 501 infants (age, 6–18 months) were provided daily supplements of maize-soy-based porridge with spirulina (SP) and without spirulina (CON). Supplementation period lasted for 16 months. In January 2018, children who participated in the initial trial were resurveyed (CON: 182 children; SP: 188 children; now aged 36–48 months). We assessed the infants’ gross motor development, fine motor development, language, and personal–social skills using a modified version of Malawi Development Assessment Tool. The initial clinical trial registration number was NCT03523182. Children in the SP group had higher scores in gross and fine motor development, language, and social skills than those in the CON group. Home fortification of complementary foods using spirulina during the first 1000 days improved development among Zambian children at preschool age.

Abstract Background: Detecting developmental delays in infants is an ongoing world commitment, especially for those below three years old. it provides appropriate services to them, early inspection enhances the communal quality of resolving difficult issues of this critical period of age. Thus, our main objective lies in developing a sufficient screening test for early evaluation of mental and motor development for infants.Methods: 54 items of motor and mental developmental milestones were adopted from the Baroda Screening Test. Then, researchers enrolled 1600 subjects based on certain inclusion and exclusion criteria. 97 pass level of developmental achievements resembles the threshold of which infants below which, infants are considered delayed.Results: The designed Egyptian Developmental Screening Tool (“EDST”) from birth up to 30 monthswith 50% and 97% pass level curves proves efficacy, reliability, cultural adaptability, and simplicity to use when compared with other peer screening tools. Results revealed a statistically significant difference between Egyptian and Baroda chart at 50% and 97% pass level. A z-score chart for motor and mental development follow up designed by calculating each age group.Conclusions: Developmental screening tests from birth up to 30 months proved consistent reliability and versatility to use in Egypt for early development delay detection. The wide variation of Egyptian infants 'developmental ages on both Egyptian and Baroda charts underpins the Egyptian chart to the Egyptian public. The z-score chart is a rapid and easy follow-up chart for Egyptian infants' development.

A preliminary developmental survey (using DDST) of 1442 Bangkok children who were between the ages of two weeks and six years was conducted between June 1983 and December 1987. The results of this study showed that the 25th percentile for the development of Bangkok children in the areas of personal-social, fine motor adaptive, language and gross motor skills were comparable to the children in original samples in Denver. Although the Bangkok group seems to have passed many test items at earlier ages, the 75th-90th percentile in each test item was generally more delayed in the Bangkok group. The investigative team suggests that further research for the purpose of establishing a norm for the DDST be pursued on the basis of geographical sampling more than socioeconomical sampling that was used in this study. AbstractBackground:Thyroid hormones are essential for growth and brain development in childhood. Although congenital hypothyroidism (CH) is the most common reason for mental retardation, normal neurological development can be achieved through early and effective treatment. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the neurological development of CH patients aged 24–56 months.Methods:The study included a total of 116 healthy control subjects and 112 patients aged 24–56 months who were diagnosed with CH during the neonatal period and were being followed up at the Pediatric Endocrinology Department, Keçiören Training and Research Hospital, between 2012 and 2015. Demographics and clinical data of interventions and outcomes were retrieved for each patient. Statistical analysis was performed using an unpaired Student’s t-test to compare means and χResults:There were no significant differences between the CH and control groups with respect to gestational age, birth weight, height standard deviation scores (HSDS) and body weight standard deviation scores (BWSDS) (p>0.05). When the groups were compared according to the Denver Developmental Screening Test (DDST), no significant differences were found in terms of personal-social, fine motor skills, or language development (p=0.325, p=0.087 and p=0.636, respectively). However, a significant difference was found between the two groups with respect to gross motor development and the result of the DDST (p=0.001). No statistical difference was found between the control and patient groups on the day of starting treatment but the number of patients with an abnormal result in the DDST starting treatment at >15 days was found to be significantly higher than the number of patients starting treatment ≤15 days. No associations were found between the DDST results of the CH group and the following factors: initial L-thyroxine (LT4) level, initial LT4 dose and the onset of treatment.Conclusions:The findings of this study indicate that the DDST results in patients with CH are generally good. Initiating treatment immediately after diagnosis and during the first days of life is absolutely imperative. However, in contrast to timing, we could not find strong evidence for determining the precise optimal dosage of LT4 to initiate treatment in children diagnosed with CH. Both the American Academy of Pediatrics and the European Society for Pediatric Endocrinology recommend 10–15 μg/kg/day as the initial dose.

The first five years of a children’s age is the period of rapid growth with physical and motor development. Those process will develop well if stimulated continuously. Early childhood always identic with high activity requires the opportunity to express their abilities. Therefore playing method is very urgent inchildren’s gross motor skills and fine motor skills development through a variety of playing activities both indoors and outdoors. Playing is an activity that cannot be separated from early childhood’s world. All playing activities will be carried out happily. By the same token learning by playing will be done happily without any sense of being forced or oppressed.

The aim of this study was to determine the developmental retardation of infants of two years of age who were delivered by vacuum extraction. This cross-sectional study examined 44 infants delivered by vacuum extraction, comprising 25 males and 19 females who were born in Tembakau Deli and St. Elizabeth Hospitals, between August 1993 until February 1994. The examination included interview and physical examination in the patient's house. Chi-square statistics analysis was used with a significant level of 95% (1'=0.05). The results showed Ihat of the 44 infants delivered by vacuum extraction. 28 (32%) had had were found with mild asphyxia, while 2 infants (5%). whose mothers work as private clerk and entrepreneur, had development retardation. We concluded that there was no significant difference in development between infants delivered by vacuum extraction and those who were born spontaneously. Developmental retardation was found in infants whose mothers lack time to communicate.

Identify the associtation among personal and environmental characteristics on the motor development of children with probable developmental coordination disorder (DCD). The participants were 42 parents, 32 teachers and 42 preschoolers’ (3.4±0.5years). As measurement instruments: The Movement Assessment Battery for Children 2 (MABC2), the Columbia Mental Maturity test (EMMC), the Questionnaire of the Brazilian Association of Research Companies (ABEP), the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ), the Swanson Nolan and Pelham IV Scale (SNAP-IV), Structured Questionnaire for parents on motor, academic, emotional and behavioral skills and Early Years Movement Skills Checklist were used. For data analysis, the Shapiro Wilk test and Binary Logistic Regression were used, adopting p <0.05. Results shown statistically significant difference for the personal characteristics associated with children with persistence DCD: 1) birth weight, age to sit, cognitive development, language problems and conduct problems; 2) For home characteristics: quality of the home environment and the parents' stable union were taken into account; 3) For day care center, the education of the classroom teacher was considered. In conclusion, children who were born with greater weight, who had higher cognitive development, live with parents in a stable relationship and who have a specialized classroom teacher were less likely to persist in DCD.

Background: Rett syndrome-RS comes under Autism spectrum disorder-ASD which is a neurodevelopmental syndrome. It is diagnosed by the main differentiating features of lack of interpersonal and communication skills, poor eye contact, delayed speech with pervasive abnormal body movements. Aim and Objectives: This case report is aimed at dissemination of comprehensive role of Ayurveda in management of ASD, Rett syndrome. Material and Methods: RS is the severe form of ASD. This case study of 2.3 year’s girl presented with RS and global delay, being treated with wholistic approach. It comprises Ayurveda chikitsa and other therapies like Yoga, hydrotherapy, occupational, music, physiotherapy and many more. Observation and Result: Patient has shown promising results in all developmental milestones such as gross motor, fine motor and personal social in 6 months duration except language. Different varieties of massage therapy, diet and Basti, Nasya (Panchkarma) procedures, Omkar mantra chanting, passive Yogasana were done. Conclusion: In this case report, mainly Ayurveda interventions were implemented with wholistic approach as an adjuvant, received good result in gross motor development which is very difficult in RS, hence it is a unique case. It also opened the door of wholistic approach with the hope to deliver the good result in similar disorders.
