Background: Autism disorder in children is characterized by problems in social functioning, communication, and the existence of repetitive and stereotyped behaviors. The pervasive and severe disabilities of children with autism are a difficult experience for their parents and families and are often accompanied by a range of challenges for caregivers. Therefore, designing appropriate programs to improve distress tolerance and reduce alexithymia is needed as a priority in health care plans. Mindfulness training is an effective way to teach a variety of skills to mothers of children with autism. Objectives: The aim of this study was to determine the effect of mindfulness training on distress tolerance and alexithymia in mothers with autistic children. Materials & Methods: In this quasi-experimental study, the study population included all mothers of children with autism in Rasht city who referred to Negah-e No Psychological Counseling Center in Guilan Province, Iran, in 2019. From this statistical population, 30 people were selected by convenience sampling and were randomly assigned to the experimental and control groups. The research instruments were Simmons and Gauher Confusion Tolerance Questionnaire (2005) and Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS) (1994). Data were analyzed using multivariate analysis of covariance (MANCOVA) by IBM SPSS v. 24. Results: There was a significant difference between the groups in terms of distress tolerance (P<0.001, F=59.45) and alexithymia (P<0.001, F=20.52). Conclusion: Mindfulness training increased distress tolerance and decreased alexithymia in mothers with autistic children.

Background: Cancer causes psychological problems, such as anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress, feelings of sadness, and anger, and family problems. Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of schema therapy on psychological capital and vulnerable attachment in women with breast cancer. Methods: The research method was quasi-experimental with a pretest-posttest design and a control group. The statistical population included all women with breast cancer admitted to the Imam Khomeini Hospital, Tehran, Iran, from 23/07/2019 to 20/11/2019. The total number of the patients was 51, of whom 30 were purposefully selected and randomly assigned to an experimental and a control group (15 people in each group). The experimental group was exposed to schema therapy for 11 weekly 90-minute sessions, while the control group did not receive any training. The Luthans Psychological Capital Questionnaire and the Vulnerable Attachment Questionnaire were used to collect data. The collected data were analyzed using multivariate analysis of covariance in SPSS-21 software. Results: The results of paired t-test showed a significant difference between the mean scores of the components of psychological capital and vulnerable attachment in the two experimental and control groups. Therefore, it can be stated that the effectiveness of schema therapy was associated with increased self-efficacy (P = 0.013), hope (P = 0.001), resilience (P = 0.034), optimism (P = 0.001), and decreased vulnerable attachment (P = 0.029). Conclusions: Based on the findings of this study regarding the effect of schema therapy on improving psychological capital and reducing vulnerable attachment, it can be concluded that schema therapy can be used as an effective intervention along with other therapies to reduce the problems of women with breast cancer.

Background and Objective: Suicide is not an uninvited guest entering unannounced rather it always occurs following a previous background. Suicide is interpreted as an action in order to accredit life or give up everything. Suicide happens because of determinism or full anxiety and depression. The present study aimed to investigate the effect of Choice Theory training on the suicidal tendency of first high school male students in Sonqor County, Kermanshah Province, Iran. Materials and Methods: This quasi-experimental study was conducted using a pretest-posttest design with a control group. The statistical population of the study consisted of all boys of the first high school in Sonqor County, Kermanshah Province, Iran, in the academic year of 2017-18. According to available statistics, about 500 students were studying at six male high schools from which one high school was selected randomly. After implementing the Multiple Attitude Questionnaire of suicidal tendency in adolescents, 30 students were divided into two groups (15 cases per group) randomly. The obtained data were then analyzed through single-variable and multivariate analysis of covariance. Results: The results of this study showed that the implementation of the Choice Theory Education to first high school male students influenced their suicidal tendency (P<0.01), and suicidal tendency decreased in the students of the experimental group. Furthermore, the results from the comparison of the attraction to death at posttest in two groups by controlling the pretest effect indicated no significant difference between the two groups in terms of the attraction to death scores (F=0.175; P<0.01). Conclusions: Considering the findings, this intervention is a suitable method to modify the behavior and improve adaptation in male students.

The aim of this study was to investigate whether there was significant difference on the students’ reading comprehension of narrative text between those who were taught through Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition (CIRC) method and those who were not. Forty-nine students were selected as the sample and quasi-experimental, non-randomized pre-test and post-test design were employed. The analysis of covariance showed that the students who were taught by using CIRC method statistically outperformed those who were not on their reading comprehension of narrative text, (F (1, 48) = 13.56, p < .05). This result implies that CIRC is an effective method to teach reading comprehension, particularly on narrative text. Since this study only focused on narrative text, future researchers might be interested to seek the effect of CIRC on other text genres. Similar study though may be conducted with a randomized design of larger population.

The performance in biology at the secondary level has not been as good as expected. This has been a matter of concern. Thus, there has been a continuous focus on exploring newer innovative learner-centered and friendly instructional strategies to enhance understanding and retention in biology. This study, therefore, determined the effects of Concept Mapping (CM) and Cooperative Mastery Learning (CML) on fostering retention in photosynthesis among secondary schools in Nyamagabe district, Rwanda. A pre-test and post-test non-equivalent control group quasi-experimental design was used. Data were obtained from 151 students taught with CM, 144 students taught with CML, and 154 students taught with Conventional Teaching Methods (CTM). The Photosynthesis Retention Test (KR-21= 0.82) was used for data collection. The data were mainly analyze d using mean and Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA). The results showed that the CM and CML treatment groups outperformed the CTM group in retention in photosynthesis. There was a statistically significant difference in favor of the CM between the two experimental groups. The male and female students taught using CM retained equally in photosynthesis while gender difference was revealed in the mean retention scores of the students exposed to the CML, with females retained significantly higher than males. The study concluded that the CM and CML strategies were more effective than CTM. It was suggested, among other things, that teachers should be encouraged to apply CM and CML strategies when teaching biology.
