Snakehead (Channa striata) is a fish that grows relatively slowly, but is a typical Sumatran fish with high albumin content and economic value. This makes this fish a very prospect to be developed. Meanwhile, dragon fruit peel is one of the wastes that can be used for diet raw materials and contains vitamins and minerals that have the potential to be useful for increasing growth in fish. This study aims to determine the growth performance of snakehead fed by adding dragon fruit peel flour. This study used test animals, namely snakehead fish juvenile with the size of 1.06 ± 0.02 g/fish. The experiment of fish reared in aquarium measuring of 35cm x 45cm x 90 cm, filled with water as high as 15 cm without aeration. The experiment diets consisted of 5 types, namely feed added with 0% dragon fruit flour (control); 0.5; 1.0; 1.5 and 2.0% of feed. Each treatment was repeated three times. Snakehead was reared for 60 days and fed three times a day on an ad satiation basis. The parameters observed in this study were the survival rate and growth performance of snakehead fish. The results showed that the survival rate between treatments was not significantly different, namely in the range of 97.76 - 100%. Meanwhile, the specific growth rate and feed efficiency of snakehead which added 2% to the diets were the highest, namely 8.66 ± 0.04%/day and 67.83 ± 2.31%/day. The conclusion of this study was the addition of dragon fruit peel flour at 2% enhanced the growth performance of snakehead.

Study on chemical content of swamp fishes from Merauke has been conducted to obtain nutritional status  of these fishes. Sampling was conducted  twice (August and November 2015) in Merauke. There were six dominant fish species, namely striped snakehead (Channa striata), nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus), tade gray mullet (Liza tade), philippine catfish (Clarias batrachus), barramundi (Lates calcarifer), and climbing perch (Anabas testudineus). Result on proximate analysis showed that the fishes had moisture content of 75.73±0.25%-81.45±0.04%, ash 0.94±0.01%-1.26±0.21%, protein 17.11±0.09%-18.92±0.05%, and lipid 0.59±0.19%-3.80±0.63%. The dominant essential amino acid of 6 swamp fishes from Merauke was lysine followed by leucine. Meanwhile the dominant non-essential amino acid was glutamic acid (32.26+0.61 mg/g), followed by aspartic acid. Calcium (Ca) was the dominant macro mineral for all fishes studied, being the highest was in nile tilapia (328.76±8.14 mg/100 g). Micro mineral was dominated by the presence of Selenium (Se) which the highest was in nile tilapia (0.084±0.005 mg/100g). These fishes were also rich in albumin, being the highest was stripe snakehead (138.59±1.68 mg/g). The average of total fatty acid showed that the fishes had saturated fatty acid (SFA) content of 46.30±0.27%, monosaturated fatty acid (MUFA) 9.20±1.6%  and polyunsaturate fatty acid (PUFA) 34.49±0.44% of total fatty acid. From the result, it can be concluded that fish harvested from swamp of Merauke and surrounding area had a good nutritional value.

Sainfoin (Onobrychis viciaefolia Scop.) and alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) were seeded in 1978 and 1979, respectively. Weed control treatments initiated in sainfoin in 1979 and in alfalfa in 1980 included annual applications of terbacil, metribuzin, simazine, hexazinone and chlorsulfuron until 1985 plus an untreated check. Dandelion (Taraxacum officinale Weber) was the main weed infesting check plots in the sainfoin and alfalfa stands. Quackgrass (Agropyron repens L. Beauv.) and nonpalatable weeds such as foxtail barley (Hordeum jubatum L.) produced 4.5 and 4.0% of the total yield, respectively, where chlorsulfuron selectively controlled broadleaf weeds. In hexazinone, metribuzin and chlorsulfuron treatments, alfalfa and sainfoin stands were almost free of dandelions. In sainfoin plots, dandelion control produced large increases in sainfoin and total herbage yield. In alfalfa plots, dandelion control had no effect on alfalfa yield or total yield. In sacco dry matter digestibility in a 72-h experiment was higher for dandelions than for alfalfa, whereas protein digestibilities were similar for these herbages. The protein content was less in dandelions than in alfalfa at the first harvest. Thus, dandelion control in sainfoin may increase yield, whereas dandelion control in alfalfa does not seem to increase yield but may increase protein content and marketability.Key words: Control, protein, digestibility, hexazinone, terbacil, metribuzin

SUMMARY A simple method is described for concentrating thyrocalcitonin from plasma by adsorption onto finely divided silica gel. An approximately 20-fold increase in biological activity with respect to protein content has been obtained with recoveries of added material of about 80%, allowing subsequent fractionation and bioassay of the fractions. Porcine thyrocalcitonin was added to either porcine or human plasma to give concentrations within the range observed in porcine thyroid venous plasma. Concentration on silica gel followed by gel filtration on Sephadex G 50 resulted in separation of the biological activity into two fractions, one of which was associated with the plasma proteins. A similar result was obtained with porcine thyroid venous plasma containing endogenous thyrocalcitonin. Preparative ultracentrifugation of plasma rich in thyrocalcitonin also provided evidence suggestive of some protein binding of the hormone. It is concluded that thyrocalcitonin is carried in plasma partly free and partly bound to plasma protein.

Treatment of the eggs of the sea urchin with a 1 M solution of glycerol at fertilization allows the recovery from this solution of the protein released from the cortical granules, including that which would normally give rise to the hyaline layer. The calcium-gelable protein previously extracted from whole eggs and from isolated cortical material was found to be present in the glycerol solution, confirming its localization in the cortical granules and its role in the hyaline layer. Quantitative measurements on the eggs of two Hawaiian species, Colobocentrotus atratus and Pseudoboletia indiana, which have the widest variation in the gel protein content, demonstrated that a proportionate amount of this material was released at fertilization in these species, which correlates with the thickness of the hyaline layer in the two cases. In addition, the calcium-insoluble fraction of Sakai can be extracted from these eggs after removal of the hyaline protein by glycerol, showing that this is a different material. A simple method for the separation of the hyaline protein from the calcium-insoluble fraction in solution is provided.

ABSTRACTThe study proposed to discover the optimum protein content and energy-protein ratio in practical diet for snakehead, Channa striata. The experiment applied complete randomized design, consisted of six treatments with four replications on each treatment. The treatments were: A (32.5%; 11.82 kcal GE/g), B (32.5%; 13.32 kcal GE/g), C (37.17%; 10.64 kcal GE/g), D (37.33%; 12.07 kcal GE/g), E (43.08%; 10.02 kcal GE/g), and F (42.88%; 10.66 kcal GE/g). Snakehead with average weight of 6.21 ± 0.03 g were reared for 8 weeks. The treatments showed significant results. Increased protein dietary level had increased the growth rate and treatment with high energy-protein ratio at the same protein dietary level provided better growth performance. However, increased energy-protein ratio at E and F treatments caused a decline in growth performance. The improvement of energy-protein dietary ratio had positive correlation with the level of lipid and protein content in fish body. Similar finding was found in liver and muscle glycogen. The results also showed that the increament of energy-protein dietary ratio was significantly and positively correlated with cholesterol, triglyceride, HDL, glucose, and albumin, yet it had no significant effect on LDL. It can be concluded that excellent growth performance was achieved by protein dietary level of 37.33% and energy-protein ratio of 12.07 kcal GE/g.Keywords: energy-protein ratio, growth, snakehead ABSTRAKPenelitian ini bertujuan untuk memperoleh kadar protein dan rasio energi-protein pakan buatan yang optimum bagi performa pertumbuhan ikan gabus.
