Tuak is a distinctive traditional drink of the Batak Toba community culture that has been running for years and becoming a daily form of consumption. The purpose of this research is to identify the process of creating tuak and to analyse the values and the role it possessed in the life of the Batak Toba community. This study was conducted using qualitative research. This study showed previous research which discusses different things related to the role of Tuak as a culture in the Batak Toba community. Previous research showed that there are pros and cons concerning cultural preservation which is only limited to the scope of the Batak Toba community. However, of course this culture has its own value for the Batak Toba community, so the community still preserves the socio-cultural values possessed by Tuak.

Irrigation systems were the first source of great abundance that stemmed from the Agricultural Revolution. They were also humanity's first great environmental curse. Long before issues of global warming and freshwater shortages haunted the modern world, irrigation systems blessed and bedeviled humans with their promise and peril. While a well-ordered functional irrigation system provided inhabitants with seed-to-yield ratios that were the envy of any dry-farming regime, these same irrigation systems could collapse in toto, bringing disaster on a scale never seen in rain-fed agricultural systems.

Abstract Immigration from the Global South is a recent phenomenon in Italy, which is turning from a prevalently homogenous Catholic country into a multi-faith one. This transformation is evident too in prisons, where people from different religious traditions share space. The long road from religious diversity to social acceptance of differences is difficult. The public debate concerns essentially Muslim inmates, and the arguments swing from ‘securitarian’ views to an inclusive approach as an alternative way to prevent radicalisation. The lack of meaningful relationships between inmates of different faiths and their religious communities can be a serious obstacle to social reinsertion. An analysis of the Italian prison system with statistical data and qualitative research enables us to outline a model of the evolution of the penitentiary systems.

AbstractThe conceptualization of interrelations between biological and cultural diversity since the 1980s indicates a biocultural turn in discourses and policies regarding nature conservation, sustainable development, and indigenous peoples. These interrelations frequently manifest as conflicts between local communities who derive their livelihoods and identity from their lands and resources, and external actors and institutions who claim control over these areas, invoking superior interests in nature conservation, development, and modernization. In these asymmetric conflicts over biocultural diversity, framed in discourses that demand the preservation of both biological and cultural diversity, the opportunities for local communities to assert their claims crucially depend on external discursive and legal frameworks.Based on a study of the Karen ethnic minority groups in the Thung Yai World Heritage Site in Thailand, this article explores challenges and chances for local communities to assert claims and rights to lands, resources, and self-determination in the context of the biocultural turn in environment and development discourses as well as heterogeneous legal frameworks. Human rights as individual rights are widely recognized, but may be difficult to enforce and of limited suitability in conflicts over biocultural diversity. Group rights like indigenous rights are increasingly devised to protect ethnic minorities and perpetuate cultural diversity, but are often disputed on the national level and may be ambiguous regarding heterogeneous communities. In Thailand and globally, community rights provide another promising framework with regard to conflicts over biocultural diversity if the claims of communities to livelihoods and self-determination are respected.

The local media market in Poland developed in very particular social conditions, conditions which Nowak 1979, 1981 described as a “social void”. As a result, it might be presumed that it was more likely that the new forms of society including local media were formed on the basis of the “bonding” type of social capital rather than the “bridging” type. Th is might be one of the reasons why tight and complex relationships between the local media and other social actors still exist. On the basis of my own qualitative research case studies conducted in four small towns in Poland, this article shows how complex the local relations are and describes the involvement of local journalists and local media owners in these networks of relations which might often be a cause of conflicts of interest individual or institutional or media bias.

A number of Javanese women have taken jobs as migrant workers in Hong Kong. This feminization of migrant workers, specifically informal work, has developed in part because of the established patriarchy in Javanese culture. Little research has been done to analyze the cross-national patterns of domestic worker transformation abroad. This research aims to fill this gap by describing and analyzing how Javanese women construct reality as migrant workers, forming a sense of connectivity with their female peers through networking and interaction. This study uses qualitative research for seventeen Javanese subjects, adopting the phenomenological approach with Foucault’s theory. Conducted in several districts of Hong Kong, this research applied area sampling. This research found that Javanese woman created their own careers by breaking the rules of the established patriarchal system by migrating to Hong Kong. Javanese women assumed self-autonomy and, once in Hong Kong, formed their own local communities. Keywords: Migration, Power, Connectivity, Javanese Women

Abstract   The Indian subcontinent is one of the first regions into which Islam entered since the era of the Righteous Caliphs. The Indian territory also witnessed the advancement of Islamic civilization due to the emergence of Islamic powers in the area. Nevertheless, the historical accounts of Islam’s entry into India which focused more on futuhat (Islamic expansion) movements gave rise to the view that Islam came to the region only through expansionist policies. In light of those, this study aims to examine Islam’s expansion into India and its impact on the geopolitics of the region. In general, this study used a qualitative research method via approaches of historical study and content analysis in collecting and analyzing information from the relevant primary and secondary sources. The findings of the study showed that the spread of Islam into the Indian territory was achieved via two ways, namely by trade and by futuhat. The wise approach and good conduct of Muslim preachers, traders and armies towards the local communities enabled the spread of Islam to India. Furthermore, India was also host to the emergence of a number of Islamic kingdoms, beginning from the Ghaznavid dominion to the emergence of the Mughal Kingdom.   Keywords: Futuhat, Umayyad-era India, Muhammad ibn al-Qasim, Arab-Indian trade, Islamic military history   Abstrak   Wilayah India merupakan antara kawasan yang awal menerima Islam, iaitu sejak era Khulafa’ al-Rashidin.
