Several therapeutic benefits of medicinal plants are attributed to antioxidant properties, since antioxidant compounds play an important role in the prevention of various diseases and aging. Many products have synergistic action from combinations of plant extracts that contain natural antioxidants. The present study aimed to evaluate the synergistic effect of Pfaffia glomerata extract with Arrabidaea chica extract for antioxidant action. In the study the extract of the inflorescences of P. glomerata and the extract of the leaves of A. chica were used. The synergism between P. glomerata extract and A. chica extract was evaluated using the ratio between experimental and theoretical antioxidant activity, which was determined using the DPPH method and the potential total reactive antioxidant method (TRAP). The combination of P. glomerata extract and A. chica extract showed a synergistic effect, in which the antioxidant property of this combination was substantially superior to the sum of the individual antioxidant effects. This demonstrates that the combined extracts can be important for the development of products that have a high antioxidant potential.

Beer is one of the most consumed drinks around the world, containing a variety of compounds that offer both appreciated sensorial characteristics and health advantages. Important healthy compounds in beer are those with antioxidant properties that attenuate the content of free radicals produced as by-products in the human metabolism, exerting an appreciable effect against cancers or cardiovascular diseases. This work details a study of antioxidant compounds present in beer, focusing on the two main groups: phenols (including polyphenolic forms) and melanoidins, formed specifically during brewing as Maillard products. The fundaments of the most important methods to evaluate beer antioxidant activity, the main antioxidant compounds present in beer—especially those with healthy properties—and the new trends to increase beer antioxidant activity are also discussed.

Nitrogen containing heterocyclic compounds such as oxindoles especially isatins and their derivatives have excellent biological properties such as anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, anticancer activity. In addition, this is first time ever we would like to report the antioxidant properties of the said class of compounds. To determine such an important bioactivity a number of halogenated oxindoles 1-3, their diaza-biphenyl derivatives (4-6), ring extended biphenyl (7) and bis-amide (8) were synthesized by classical heating method. The antioxidant activity of all the synthesized compounds was screened by DPPH method with respect to ascorbic acid. In our present investigation some of the synthesized compounds (1, 2, 3, 5 and 6) were found to be active. Keywords: Antioxidant; Isatin; OxindoleOnline 12 August 2009DOI: 10.3329/bmrcb.v35i2.2564Bangladesh Med Res Counc Bull 2009; 35: 49-52

Objective: The aim of this study was to analyze phytochemicals, antioxidant potential and phenolic profiling of leaf and fruit extracts of Diplocyclos palmatus. Methods: The leaves and fruits were subjected for sequential extraction with hexane, chloroform, methanol and water. All extracts were subjected to biochemical studies such as phenols, tannins, flavonoids, terpenoids and antioxidant assays such as 1,1-diphenyl-1-picryl hydrazyl (DPPH), 2,2’ Azinobis (3-ethyl-benzothiozoline-6-sulfonic acid (ABTS), ferric reducing antioxidant property (FRAP), metal chelating and phospho- molybdenum reduction assay. Further methanolic extract was used for phenolics characterization by reversed phase-high performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC).Results: It was observed that methanol fruit extract showed significantly higher phenolics (9.29±0.01 mg tannic acid equivalent (TAE)/g extract), flavonoids (15.02±0.96 mg catechin equivalent (CE)/g extract) and terpenoids (276.73±0.76 mg ursolic acid equivalent (UAE)/g extract). However, chloroform extracts of leaf and fruit exhibited a high amount of tannins (22.07±0.06, 6.99±0.10 mg CE/g extract) respectively. The extracts were subjected to assess their antioxidant potential using various in vitro systems such as DPPH, ABTS, FRAP, metal chelating and phospho- molybdenum reduction. Among the various extracts, methanol fruit extract had highest DPPH radical scavenging activity (26.73±0.14 mg ascorbic acid equivalent (AAE)/g extract), metal chelating activity (0.80±0.01 mg EDTA equivalent (EE)/g extract) and phospho- molybdenum activity (291.24±2.19 mg AAE/g extract). In ABTS radical scavenging assay, aqueous leaf extract (12.11±0.07 mg trolox equivalent (TE)/g extract) showed the best response. The effective ferric reducing antioxidant property (141.54±10.12 mg Fe (II)/g extract) was exhibited by aqueous fruit extract. Overall, methanol and water were found to be the best solvents for the extraction of antioxidant compounds from fruit and leaf. In the RP-HPLC analysis, the major bioactive phenolic compounds such as catechin (CA) and hydroxybenzoic acid (HBA) were recorded in leaf as compared to fruit. In leaf, CA and chlorogenic acid (CLA) were principal compounds in leaf and fruit respectively. However, gallic acid (GA), HBA, CLA and vanillic acid (VA) were widespread in leaf and fruit. Conclusion: On the basis of the results, it was found that D. palmatus may serve as a novel and rich source of natural antioxidants and it can be further explored for pharmaceutical purposes.

Mulberry (Morus spp. L., Moraceae) fruits, leaves, bark and branch have been used in traditional medicine as diuretic, hypoglycemic and hypotensive. The mechanism of their effects is correlated with the content of active components. Objective of this work was to evaluate and compare antioxidant properties of different extracts of two Morus species growing in Serbia: Morus alba L. (white mulberry) and Morus nigra L. (black mulberry). Potential antioxidant activity, content of antioxidant compounds (phenolics and flavonoids) and radical scavenging capacity, tested by DPPH method, were evaluated. The phenolic and flavonoid composition of different Morus extracts was determined by the HPLC method. The extracts prepared from fruits, leaves and roots of M. alba and M. nigra exhibited different characteristics. The highest extraction yield was achieved by M. alba leaves extraction (23.40%). M. nigra roots extract shown the highest total phenolics (186.30 mg CAE/g), while highest total flavonoids content (67.37 mg RE/g) was determined for M. nigra leaves extracts. In addition, black mulberry leaves extracts with the highest antioxidant activity had the highest phenolic acids contents. The dominant phenolic components in the samples were rutin and chlorogenic acid. All investigated mulberry dry extracts shown high content of phenolic compounds and significant antioxidant activity. This work contributes to knowledge of the antioxidant properties of Morus species. The obtained results may be useful in the evaluation of new dietary supplements and food products.

Since their discovery in 2004, carbon dots have attracted strong interest in the scientific community due to their characteristic properties, particularly their luminescence and their ease of synthesis and derivatization. Carbon dots can be obtained from different carbon sources, including natural products, resulting in a so-called ’green synthesis’. In this work, we obtain carbon dots from tomato juice in order to obtain nanoparticles with the antioxidant capabilities of the natural antioxidants present in that fruit. The obtained material is characterized regarding nanoparticle size distribution, morphology, surface functional groups and optic properties. Antioxidant properties are also evaluated through the DPPH method and their cytotoxicity is checked against human dermal fibroblast and A549 cell-lines. The results indicate that carbon dots obtained from tomato have a higher antioxidant power than other already-published antioxidant carbon dots. The bandgap of the synthesized materials was also estimated and coherent with the literature values. Moreover, carbon dots obtained from tomato juice are barely toxic for healthy cells up to 72 h, while they induce a certain cytotoxicity in A549 lung carcinoma cells.

The effect of fenugreek and lingonberry supplements, containing natural antioxidants and a lot of important nutrition components, on the chemical composition and antioxidant content of flour mixture based on whole oat flour were investigated. Oat flour was produced using hydrothermal treatment, which included intensive moistening of the grain in the vacuum unit, standing, and drying. In addition to whole oat flour, the highgrade wheat flour, dry wheat gluten, and fenugreek seed powder or dried lingonberry powder were added to the flour composite mixture. The chemical composition of raw material and flour composite such as protein, carbohydrates, fat, and moisture was determined. Besides, antioxidant components, like Vitamin C and flavonoids in raw material and flour composites were investigated. From results, it has been established that adding fenugreek seed powder and dried lingonberry powder to flour composite based on oat flour leads to significant enhancing in the chemical composition and antioxidant compounds: the addition of the fenugreek seed powder led to the increase of protein content in the flour composite. Furthermore, adding dried lingonberry powder and fenugreek seed powder led to a slight effect on carbohydrates. The addition of fenugreek seed powder has the greatest effect on the content of flavonoids. In addition, vitamin C was significantly increased by the addition of lingonberry. According to, the results of our research can recommend the addition of fenugreek seed powder and lingonberry to oatwheat flour composite leading to improvement of its nutritional and antioxidant properties.

Lactobacilli and bifidobacteria are an important part of human gut microbiota. Among numerous benefits, their antioxidant properties are attracting more and more attention. Multiple in vivo and in vitro studies have demonstrated that lactobacilli and bifidobacteria, along with their cellular components, possess excellent antioxidant capacity, which provides a certain degree of protection to the human body against diseases associated with oxidative stress. Recently, lactobacilli and bifidobacteria have begun to be considered as a new source of natural antioxidants. This review summarizes the current state of research on various antioxidant properties of lactobacilli and bifidobacteria. Special emphasis is given to the mechanisms of antioxidant activity of these bacteria in the human gut microbiota, which involve bacterial cell components and metabolites. This review is also dedicated to the genes involved in the antioxidant properties of lactobacilli and bifidobacteria strains as indicators of their antioxidant potential in human gut microbiota. Identification of the antioxidant biomarkers of the gut microbiota is of great importance both for creating diagnostic systems for assessing oxidative stress and for choosing strategies aimed at restoring the normal functioning of the microbiota and, through it, restoring human health. In this review, the practical application of probiotic strains with proven antioxidant properties to prevent oxidative stress is also considered.
