Are pre-service teachers well prepared to teach elementary school arithmetic? It Seems that the evidence needed to answer this question reasonably should be taken from many sources. One of these sources would be a study of pre-service teachers' knowledge of arithmetic. Fulkerson has provided some evidence regarding this. He concluded from his study “ … that far too many of the 158 prospective elementary teachers studied herein have an insufficient. knowledge of arithmetic to teach the subject effectively.”1

This quantitative study was conducted to identify the misconception between social studies and social sciences among pre-service elementary teachers. Data were collected from 122 respondents drawn by cluster sampling in Yogyakarta. Aiken's validity and Cronbach Alpha were then employed to examine the instrument's quality. Collected data were analyzed using descriptive techniques to examine the level of misconception. The popular misconceptions between social studies and social sciences were identified through the criteria developed by Abraham, Grzybowski, Renner, & Marek (1992). The results of the study show that there was a greater understanding of social studies and social sciences for the specific fields of geography, anthropology, and politics. The fields that were misconceived included economics, geography, and history. Therefore, the main emphasis should be placed on these fields. The implications of this research will eventually become the basis and guideline for social studies lecturers to give emphases on the fields of study belonging to social studies, helping students distinguish these disciplines from those of social sciences. In addition, each social science discipline adopted into social studies must receive special attention, given the greater level of misconception among the pre-service teachers in these fields.

Events in the past ten years have made it necessary and desirable for colleges and universities to increase their course requirements in mathematics for elementary school teachers. There has been little or no opposition to this trend except as one finds it in individual colleges when there is a proposal to change course requirements. In mathematics the change has been in the direction of doubling or trebling the number of credits in mathematics required of prospective elementary teachers.

Presentation of historical material in social studies learning in elementary schools, in general, still uses media in the form of textbooks. A comprehensive study has yet to be carried out depending on the historical environment particular to the Elementary Schools in Northern Cyprus. The aim of this study is hence to determine whether the coverage of historical environment subjects in elementary school social sciences textbooks is absorbed or not by the 4th and 5th Grades in the context of both content and visuals. The method of study analysed has been organised in accordance with the qualitative research. The population was not indicated pursuant to qualitative research and so purposive sampling was implemented. The textbooks used were mainly selected from the afore-mentioned grades and classes. All the data collected were based on the textbooks used during the assessment process. The data was gathered in accordance with the document analysis technique and everything was analysed in detail. The categories used were generated after the authors performed analysis by utilising textbooks. To ensure the validity of the categories, literature scanning was undertaken and expert opinion was taken. The category definitions were written for public access. Moreover, units, titles and sub-titles were chosen as registration units and studied accordingly. Thus, the texts in the textbooks were guaranteed to cover the sufficient coverage and dimension for teaching the subject. The frequency of categories used under the text in historical environment was given and the number of words for the scope was also indicated. The size of visuals used in textbooks was given in accordance with the categories. As a result of the study, while 5th Grade textbooks cover historical environment subjects, there was no indication for the 4th Grade textbooks. Keywords: social sciences, textbooks, North Cyprus, historical environment, elementary school.
