This article focuses on the role of sexuality and intimate relationships during women’s exit processes from drug abuse. Drawing from qualitative interviews with Swedish women the article explores how their sexual practice is played out both during drug use and in the new drug-free life situation. The conflictual transition process evolves around the individual’s attempts to adapt to various sexual scripts made available to them. An element of shame regarding past sexual experiences is enforced by a strong desire to create a new identity as ‘ordinary’. The safest option then is to abstain from sex even if it may lead to frustration and longing. To some, toning down sexuality is a welcome respite, to others a meaningless wait. Why does the beautiful, lovely sexuality never come?

The paper describes the situation of drugs and drug sources found available at the village level in Thailand. It concludes, from village-survey data (N = 195) and village case studies (N=15), that drugs are available in abundance. A vast variety of drugs, including prescription drugs, are available at various sources, of which the most common ones are grocery stores. The situation reflects the failure of the drug regulation system as well as the influence of commercial pharmaceutical sector in drug provision. This situation hampers attempts to rationalize drug use by consumers.

Foods that are rich in fats ans sugars are pleasurable because they stimulate our reward circuits, the same ones that are activated by drugs. In a context in which unhealthy diets and drug abuse are common from adolescence, it is important to investigate its consequences. This article reviews the relationship between especially tasty food, our brain’s reward system, and drug use. The present status of drug abuse patterns among the elderly is complex. As we learn more about drug dependence, stereotyped ideas have given way to the realization that medical, psychiatric, environmental and socioeconomic factors play a major role in the way drugs are perceived and misused by the elderly. While opiates use persists, many elderly are now in methadone treatment programs where the median age continues to rise. Presently the principal drugs of abuse for the aged are in the category of depressants including alcohol. Mixed drug use is particularly hazardous. Hallucinogens, marijuana and stimulants are primarily drugs of the youth culture.
