Limiting global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels by 2050 requires achieving net zero emissions of greenhouse gases by 2050 and a strong decrease in methane (CH4) emissions. Our aim was to connect the global need for mitigation of the emissions of greenhouse gases and enteric CH4 from ruminant production to basic research on the biological consequences of inhibiting rumen methanogenesis in order to better design strategies for pronounced mitigation of enteric CH4 production without negative impacts on animal productivity or economic returns. Ruminant production worldwide has the challenge of decreasing its emissions of greenhouse gases while increasing the production of meat and milk to meet consumers demand. Production intensification decreases the emissions of greenhouse gases per unit of product, and in some instances has decreased total emissions, but in other instances has resulted in increased total emissions of greenhouse gases. We propose that decreasing total emission of greenhouse gases from ruminants in the next decades while simultaneously increasing meat and milk production will require strong inhibition of rumen methanogenesis. An aggressive approach to pronounced inhibition of enteric CH4 emissions is technically possible through the use of chemical compounds and/or bromoform-containing algae, but aspects such as safety, availability, government approval, consumer acceptance, and impacts on productivity and economic returns must be satisfactorily addressed. Feeding these additives will increase the cost of ruminant diets, which can discourage their adoption. On the other hand, inhibiting rumen methanogenesis potentially saves energy for the host animal and causes profound changes in rumen fermentation and post-absorptive metabolism. Understanding the biological consequences of methanogenesis inhibition could allow designing strategies to optimize the intervention. We conducted meta-regressions using published studies with at least one treatment with >50% inhibition of CH4 production to elucidate the responses of key rumen metabolites and animal variables to methanogenesis inhibition, and understand possible consequences on post-absorptive metabolism. We propose possible avenues, attainable through the understanding of biological consequences of the methanogenesis inhibition intervention, to increase animal productivity or decrease feed costs when inhibiting methanogenesis.

The cost of grazed grass is less than half that of grass silage (O’Kiely, 1994) and incomes from beef production are low and largely dependent on EU support schemes. Thus the income from beef production could be incresed by reducing feed costs through increasing the proportion of grazed grass in the diet and optimising the use of the various support schemes. The objective of this two-year study was to examine the effects on the performance of yearling cattle of turnout to pasture three weeks earlier than normal. This was examined within two suckler beef production systems. One was a standard system similar to that outlined by Drennan (1993) and the second was compatible with the Rural Environment Protection Scheme (REPS).

In Brazil, the delivery of homes for low-inc ome households is dictated by costs rather than performance. Issues such as the impact of climate change, affordability of operational energy use, and lack of energy security are not taken into account, even though they can severely impact the occupants. In this work, the authors evaluated the thermal performance of two affordable houses as-built and after the integration of envelope improvements. A new replicable method to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of these improvements was proposed. The case study houses comprise the most common affordable housing type delivered widely across Brazil and a proposition of a better affordable housing solution, built in Porto Alegre, southern Brazil, integrating passive design strategies to increase thermal comfort. The findings reveal a potential for improving indoor thermal conditions by up to 76% and 73%, respectively, if costs are not a concern, and 40% and 45% with a cost increase of 12% and 9% if a comfort criterion of 20–25 °C was considered. Equations to estimate costs of improvements in affordable housing were developed. The authors concluded that there is a great scope for building envelope optimisation, and that this is still possible without significant impact on budget.

The ability of rumen microbes to synthesize protein from ammonia-N enables the use of non-protein-N as a N source in ruminant diets. The strategy for feed formulation therefore would be to meet the microbial N requirement with a cheap N source (such as urea) and to increase the proportion of dietary protein for use directly by the host animal. There has been some indication that the efficiency of rumen microbial protein synthesis could be higher if protein N is provided (Stock, Klopfenstein, Brink, Britton and Harmon, 1986). The objective of this experiment was to compare the use of urea and casein as a source of rumen degradable nitrogen (RDN) for the production of microbial protein in sheep.Five male Blackface x Suffolk lambs (33-42 kg live weight) fitted with rumen cannula were used. The animals were fed a restricted amount (721 g DM/day) of a low-N basal diet with or without supplementation with either urea or casein.

Abstract Dairy farm margin has continued to be a challenge for the dairy industry. Several years of challenging milk prices with limited relief from high feed costs and increasing production cost have continued to erode the net margin of US dairy farms. As dairy producers continue to operate in a challenging economic environment, discoveries are being made in various farm efficiencies to improve farm margin. Increased management intensity on all aspects of the dairy farm is resulting in the discover of and improvement of many individual efficiency factors. Key areas of economic efficiency include feed, animal reproduction, replacement animals, labor and resource allocation. Often the answer to improved efficiency involves more than just reduced production cost, but also in the improvement of production to reduce the cost per unit of milk produced. Identifying and focusing on the important factors that can improve overall farm efficiency will enable producers to weather the economic challenges. For dairy producers, one of the complications is the biology of the dairy cow and understanding how to utilize the biology correctly for improved efficiency of milk production. Improved efficiency of milk production requires attention to details in many areas of the dairy. Identifying the correct areas of deficiencies, establishing corrective plans of action and then careful evaluation of the impact of changes are all key to the overall success of improving dairy farm margins and efficiencies.

Представлены основные результаты исследований особенностей заполнителей из песчано-гравийной смеси (ПГС) Веденского месторождения Чеченской Республики. Приведены минералогический и петрографический составы известных месторождений ПГС Северного Кавказа. Изучены физико-механические и другие свойства как самих ПГС, так и отдельных их мелких и крупных фракций заполнителей. Получена зависимость стоимости бетонов на основе ПГС от класса бетона по прочности на сжатие. Представлены сравнительные данные бетонов на основе ПГС с бетонами на искусственном заполнителе - щебне. Доказана эффективность применения ПГС в технологии бетона после их обогащения и фракционирования, способствующих улучшению контактной зоны такого заполнителя и цементного камня и, как следствие, повышению прочности бетона. The main results of studies of the features of aggregates from a sand and gravel mixture (SGM) of the Vedensky deposit in the Chechen Republic are presented. The mineralogical and petrographic compositions of the known deposits of SGM in the North Caucasus are presented. The physicomechanical and other properties of both the SGM themselves and their individual small and large aggregate fractions have been studied. The dependence of the cost of concrete based on SGM on the class of concrete in terms of compressive strength is obtained. Comparative data of concretes based on SGM with concretes based on artificial aggregate - crushed stone are presented. The effectiveness of the use of SGM in concrete technology after their enrichment and fractionation has been proven, which helps to improve the contact zone of such a filler and cement stone and, as a result, to increase the strength of concrete.This work is supported by the Russian Foundation for Basic Research (RFBR) in the framework of the scientific project No. 18-48-200001.

The use of the crop rotation method in fish farming makes it possible to increase fish productivity and crop yields in ponds. In the countries of the Middle East, in recent years, the Aqua Crop rotation practice has been developing, in particular, the consistent cultivation of fish and rice in fish ponds, which allows eliminating the contradictions between these crops and increasing production efficiency. In Iraq, an experiment was carried out on the variable cultivation of rice and carp in fish ponds for four years, with the aim of introducing this practice into the country’s agriculture. Four ponds, each with an area of 7.5 hectares, were involved. The research was carried out in two variants: in experiment No.1 rice was grown in the first year, fish in the second, then rice again and in the fourth year — fish, in the second experiment, on the contrary, at the beginning of the fish, then rice, etc. The fish-breeding season lasted 9 months (March to November). Fish-breeding indicators were studied in detail: survival rate, feed costs, fish productivity, the results of rice cultivation were judged by yield. In addition, indicators of economic efficiency were determined according to a simplified scheme. The results indicate that, in general, fish-breeding indicators turned out to be higher when growing fish in ponds after rice, so fish productivity increased by almost 30% with an average value of 3.9 t/ha, feed costs decreased, while rice yield increased by 15–16% and averaged 3.6 t/ha. The best fish-breeding indicators were obtained in the second experiment after rice was grown in the ponds for two years. Economic calculations confirmed the advantages of using the aquacrop rotation practice, so in the second experiment the cost of marketable fish decreased by 10%, and the profitability increased by almost 30%.

The results of a previous experiment showed that when the amount of compound feed fed to crossbred ewes during late pregnancy and early lactation was reduced, being replaced by feed-blocks, animal performance was maintained and that the cost of supplementary feeding was similar. In the same experiment, when compound was replaced totally by feed-blocks plus Scotmol® (a blend of molasses and pot ale syrup), feed costs were considerably reduced, but animal performance was not acceptable (Merrell and Marsh, 1994). In the current experiment done at ADAS Redesdale in 1994 the proportion of compound feed replaced by feed-blocks was increased compared with the previous experiment, in an attempt to reduce feed costs, and the feasibility of replacing part or all of the copmound with cane molasses and fishmeal was tested.

  ABSTRAK Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui pengaruh dari penggunaan ramuan herbal terhadap income over feed cost  ayam broiler. Materi  yang digunakan pada  penelitian ini adalah: ayam broiler DOC. Penelitian ini dirancang dengan menggunakan Rancangan Acak Lengkap (RAL) yang terdiri dari 4 perlakuan dan masing-masing perlakuan terdiri dari 4 ulangan. Perlakuan yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah penggunaan ramuan herbal dalam air minum dengan level penggunaan sebagai berikut : P0: tanpa penambahan ramuan herbal, P1:air + 10 % ramuan herbal, P2: air  + 15 % ramuan herbal, P3: air + 20% ramuan herbal. Variabel yang di amati  dalam penelitian ini adalah konsumsi pakan, biaya pakan, dan income over feed cost ayam broiler. Data yang diperoleh (income over feed cost) di analisis dengan menggunakan analisis ragam dengan rancangan Acak Lengkap (RAL). Hasil penelitian menunjukan bahwa biaya pakan tertinggi terdapat pada kelompok perlakuan P3 diikuti berturut-turut oleh P1, P2, P0 dan yang terendah adalah P0. Sedangkan pada P0 biaya pakan paling rendah karena tidak ada penggunaan ramuan herbal. Berdasarkan data penerimaan, penerimaan tertinggi terdapat pada kelompok kontrol P1 Rp 31.430,6  sedangkan penerimaan terandah terdapat pada kelompok P0 sebesar Rp 24.814,8.100 Rendahnya penerimaan dalam penelitian ini disebabkan oleh rendahnya bobot badan ayam broiler selama penelitian. Income Over Feed Cost selama penelitian yang tertinggi terdapat pada kelompok P3 (3.568), dan terendah terdapat pada perlakuan  P1 (979) P0 (1.964), P2 (1.937) karena biaya pakan lebih tinggi dari pada penerimaan.Ini berarti bahwa penggunaan ramuan herbal  dalam air minum berpengaruh sangat nyata (P< 0,01) terhadap Income Over Feed Cost. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian dapat disimpulkan bahwa penggunaan ramuan herbal sebagai feed additive  memberikan pengaruh sangat nyata terhadap IOFC ayam broiler.   Abstract The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of using herbal ingredients on income over feed costs of broiler chickens. The material used in this study was: broiler DOC. This study was designed using a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) consisting of 4 treatments and each treatment consisted of 4 replications. The treatment used in this study is the use of herbal ingredients in drinking water with the use level as follows: P0: without the addition of herbal ingredients, P1: water + 10% herbal ingredients, P2: water + 15% herbal ingredients, P3: water + 20% herbal concoctions. The variables observed in this study were feed consumption, feed costs, and income over feed costs for broiler chickens. The data obtained (income over feed cost) is analyzed using a variety of analysis with a completely randomized design (CRD). The results showed that the highest feed costs were found in the P3 treatment group followed by P1, P2, P0 and the lowest was P0. Whereas at P0 the cost of feed is lowest because there is no use of herbal ingredients. Based on acceptance data, the highest revenue was in the P1 control group of Rp. 31,430.6 while the lowest acceptance was in the P0 group of Rp. 24,814.8,100. The low acceptance in this study was caused by the low body weight of broiler chickens during the study. Income Over Feed Cost during the highest research was found in the P3 group (3,568), and the lowest was found in the treatment of P1 (979) P0 (1,964), P2 (1,937) because the cost of feed was higher than acceptance. drinking water has a very significant effect (P <0.01) on Income Over Feed Cost. Based on the results of the study it can be concluded that the use of herbal ingredients as additive feeds has a very significant effect on IOFC broiler chickens.

Droughts, floods, soaring temperatures, sea-level rise, and melting ice are just some of the damages brought about by climate change. Chapter 1 details the cost of our failure to cut our emissions, from crop-destroying droughts to devastating floods. It also documents the inexorable build-up of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere as demonstrated by the Keeling curve and observations from Antarctic ice core samples. The chapter then provides a brief history of the science linking the build-up of atmospheric greenhouse gases and climate damages.

The current patterns of production and consumption of clothes are known for their negative impacts on our planet, and the efforts towards a responsible fashion system must come from industry and users alike. Whereas the fashion industry may focus on achieving eco-efficiency, designers need to engage the wearers in long-term commitment with their clothes to counteract the ongoing increase of textile waste. However, current design strategies for product attachment have proven that it is difficult to succeed at this mission. In this paper we introduce the focus and theoretical framework of a research project that aims to study the relationship between wearers and clothes. We present our research perspective through a literature review that is supported by empirical testimonies of dozens of women, whose words illustrate the complexity of human relationships with garments. When we compare our connection with clothes to interpersonal love relationships, we find that the similarities are significant enough to justify a different approach in design practice, and we suggest a re-focus on the existing wearer–clothing relationships.
