Introduction: Migraine is a multifactorial neurological disorder with a major metabolic facet. Dietary approaches represent a commonly implemented lifestyle modifying strategy in headache clinics, yet the precise relationship between diet and migraine is still a matter of debate.Materials and Methods: The study consisted of two parts: first, in a cross-sectional design, we compared alimentary habits of migraine subjects and a control group of healthy volunteers. For the second part, we prospectively evaluated patients' daily consumption of various potentially migraine-triggering foods over a two-month period in order to examine their possible association with the occurrence of a migraine attack.Results: Most migraine patients reported avoiding at least one potentially migraine-triggering food/drink from their diet. In spite of that, with the sole exemption of citrus fruits, there were no statistically significant differences with respect to consumption patterns between migraine patients and controls (including wine and chocolate). Consumption frequency over time was proportional to intake of potentially migraine-triggering foods the day before a migraine attack.Conclusion: Our results underline the need of performing trigger challenges in order to avoid falling into an association-causation fallacy when attempting to identify possible alimentary migraine triggers. Indeed, it is possible that intake of certain foods like chocolate before attacks is a consequence of pre-attack cravings or a simple coincidence facilitated by previously established dietary habits.

Polypharmacy is a common practice among the elderly, but few studies have evaluated its association with nutritional markers. The aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence of polypharmacy and its association with nutritional markers, chronic diseases, sociodemographic and health variables. This research is part of the Study Elderly/Goiânia, which evaluated 418 elderly community in a cross-sectional design. Polypharmacy was defined as the use of five or more concomitant medications. The following nutritional markers were investigated: BMI, waist circumference, percentage body fat, weight gain and loss, use of diet, daily consumption of fruits, vegetables, skimmed and whole milk. Multivariate analysis was performed using hierarchical Poisson regression, with significance level set at 5%. The prevalence of polypharmacy was 28% (95%CI 23.1 - 32.5), with a significant association with feminine gender, age range 75 - 79 years, eutrophic nutritional status and obesity, use of diet, poor self-rated health and presence of two, three or more chronic diseases. The high prevalence of polypharmacy and its association with nutritional markers and chronic diseases call the attention for the need of nutritional surveillance and monitoring in the elderly.

Abstract Background The purpose of this study was to compare the dietary habits of patients with Crohn’s disease in remission with a control group. Methods This is a comparative cross-sectional descriptive study that took place over a period of one month including 45 patients already managed for Crohn’s disease (CD), who had been in stable clinical remission for at least 6 months at the time of the survey and had the same treatment for at least 6 months compared with a group of 40 healthy volunteers adjusted for age, sex and body mass index (BMI) recruited among health personnel. Questionnaires about dietary habits, patients’ attitudes and beliefs about diet and its impact on their illness, and a dietary history-type food survey were asked and completed for all subjects. Results Total energy and macronutrient intakes were comparable in both groups and adapted to the guidelines. Fibre and micronutrient intakes were significantly lower in CD group, as was the consumption of dairy products, legumes, vegetables and fruits, oleaginous fruit. There were multiple dietary restrictions among CD patients including milk and its derivatives, fruits, vegetables, and legumes. In fact, 11% of them continued to strictly follow the same residue-free diet prescribed at the time of flares and others had barely expanded their diet. The reasons were mainly represented by the fear of triggering digestive disorders in 77% of cases. Fifty-six per cent of patients believed that fibre and milk negatively affect their disease and could trigger digestive disorders. Forty-four per cent said that the avoided foods gave them digestive disorders. By stratifying patients by age, sex or disease characteristics (location, treatment, history of surgery), we found no predictive factor for these dietary restrictions. Moreover, in 23% of patients, the diet was totally obscured by the doctor during consultations. In addition, and despite the discussion with the doctor about food, 46% turned to other sources such as the entourage, other patients, media and internet to find information on their diet. Conclusion Our study shows that patients with Crohn’s disease in remission suffer from several deficiencies due to multiple dietary exclusions. The results suggest that an unbalanced diet should be identified to avoid the micronutrient deficiency observed and highlights the importance of communication about diet between Doctors and patients.

IntroductionThere is a lack of epidemiological evidence on the prevalence and incidence of mental health disorders in adolescence in Croatia. Depressive disorder and paranoid symptoms have been demonstrated to be closely related in adult community samples or patients with adult depression. The present study used a cross-sectional design to evaluate a sample of Croatian adolescents.ObjectivesExamine the prevalence of paranoid symptoms in adolescents attending grammar school as a preliminary study of clinical characteristic of depression in adolescence.MethodsA sample of 450 individuals, average age 15.7 (SD = 0.45); female 232 (51.6%), male 218 (48.4%). The screening was followed by the use of a structured psychiatric interview (HAMD-21), which was administered to confirm the presence or absence of depression disorder. Item paranoid symptoms were administered to evaluate the level OD symptoms (0–none; 1–suspicious; 2–ideas of reference; 3–delusions of reference and persecutions).ResultsA total of 450 participants were screened, using HAMD-21, paranoid symptoms occurred (44.9%). Depressed adolescents: moderate, severe and very severe, defined as more than 14 points in HAMD-21 presented paranoid symptoms 68.1%, and non-depressed 32.2%.ConclusionThe depressive group displayed more frequent and intense paranoid symptoms than the control group (P < 0.001). Among non-depressed the incidence of paranoid symptoms is a surprisingly high. This could be the consequences of the war in Croatia, transition, as well as the influence of social networks on adolescent communication. Abstract Background Neck pain is a widespread complaint. People experiencing neck pain often present an altered timing in contraction of cervical muscles. This altered afferent information elicits the cervico-ocular reflex (COR), which stabilizes the eye in response to trunk-to-head movements. The vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) elicited by the vestibulum is thought to be unaffected by afferent information from the cervical spine. Objective The aim of the study was to measure the COR and VOR in people with nonspecific neck pain. Design This study utilized a cross-sectional design in accordance with the STROBE statement. Methods An infrared eye-tracking device was used to record the COR and the VOR while the participant was sitting on a rotating chair in darkness. Eye velocity was calculated by taking the derivative of the horizontal eye position. Parametric statistics were performed. Results The mean COR gain in the control group (n=30) was 0.26 (SD=0.15) compared with 0.38 (SD=0.16) in the nonspecific neck pain group (n=37). Analyses of covariance were performed to analyze differences in COR and VOR gains, with age and sex as covariates. Analyses of covariance showed a significantly increased COR in participants with neck pain. The VOR between the control group, with a mean VOR of 0.67 (SD=0.17), and the nonspecific neck pain group, with a mean VOR of 0.66 (SD=0.22), was not significantly different. Limitations Measuring eye movements while the participant is sitting on a rotating chair in complete darkness is technically complicated. Conclusions This study suggests that people with nonspecific neck pain have an increased COR. The COR is an objective, nonvoluntary eye reflex and an unaltered VOR. This study shows that an increased COR is not restricted to patients with traumatic neck pain.

Early childhood caries (ECC) is a chronic, infectious disease that affects the primary dentition of young children. It is the result of unequal contributions of risk factors and protective factors that influence the disease. The aim of this study was to assess if the X chromosome region previously linked to caries was associated with ECC. Two hundred and fifty-nine unrelated children with no chronic illnesses from 2 to 5 years of age who had no systemic fluoride consumption were evaluated using a cross-sectional design. Data on oral habits were obtained through a questionnaire, and caries experience data were collected by clinical examination. Twenty-three markers in ten genes were studied. Genotyping of the selected polymorphisms was carried out by real-time polymerase chain reaction. Regression analyses were performed comparing individuals with and without caries experience. Of 259 subjects, 123 were caries free. The markers in Xq25.1–27.2 were associated with ECC when children were using milk bottle for longer times (p = 0.01) and had more snacks over the course of a day (p = 0.05). Conversely, the markers in the X chromosome studied here were protective for ECC (p = 0.008) in children consuming milk before going to sleep. The genes located in the X chromosome possibly contribute to ECC and have an impact on ECC depending on the dietary habits.

Daily consumption could aff ect nutritional status. Overconsumption lead to overweight, while less consumption lead to underweight, that could happens to college student who started early adult phase. Aim of this research was to investigate the diff erence of energy and macronutrients consumption among students of Faculty of Public Health Universitas Airlangga. This was an observational analytic research using cross sectional design. Sample was randomly chosen as much as 72 students. Data was collected using height and weight anthropometric measurement to determine nutritional status and 3x 24h food recall. Statistical test used was one way Anova for energy and carbohydrate consumption variables and Kruskall Wallis test for protein and fat consumption variables. The result indicated prevalence of underweight, normal, and overweight students were 16.7%, 45.8%, and 37.5% consecutively. Overweight students tend to have higher average of energy and carbohydrate consumption. However, most of students consumed enough protein and fat. There were diff erences of energy (p=0.008) and carbohydrate consumption (p=0.047) based on nutritional status among students. Overweight students need to reduce energy and macronutrient consumption as an eff ort to achieve normal nutritional status.

Background: The prevalence of overweight and obesity in adolescence increases significantly from year to year particularly in Depok. Consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages is one of the causes. Excess triglyceride levels are one of the risk factor for metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular disease. Consumption frequency of sugar-sweetened beverages is associated with increased serum triglyceride levels.  Method: This study used a cross-sectional design involving 47 subjects recruited through the consecutive sampling method. The consumption frequency of sweetened soft drinks is taken by the semiquantitative FFQ method. Samples of serum triglyceride levels were taken from venous blood and measured using enzymatic methods.Result: Forty-seven subjects finished the study protocol The result showed that there is a significant positive correlation with very strong degrees (p = <0.001, r = 0.88) between the consumption frequency of sugar-sweetened beverages with serum triglyceride levels.Conclusion: There is a significant positive correlation with very strong degrees between the consumption frequency of sugar-sweetened beverages with serum triglyceride levels.Keywords: overweight, female adolescence, sugar-sweetened beverages, triglyceride

Background: Down syndrome (DS) is a congenital disorder caused by abnormalities of chromosome 21, resulting in migration defect of neutrophils, specifically in GCF as a marker of increasing periodontal infection. This study aimed to analyze the difference in neutrophil numbers between down syndrome and healthy children.Method: This research was an analytic observational with cross sectional design, and divided into two groups. The control group is consisted of healthy children and the other is consisted of down syndrome children. GCF was taken using paper point number 45-50 for 30 seconds, then it smeared into object glass and painted with giemsa staining. Observations was done by light microscopy with 1000 times magnification.Result: The result of studies with p<0.05 was indicating a significant difference of neutrophil numbers between children with down syndrome and the healthy group.Conclusion: This study concluded that there was a difference in neutrophil numbers due to the migration defect of neutrophils in children with down syndrome, that can cause proneness to periodontal infections.

Stunting adalah kegagalan memenuhi pertumbuhan seperti memenuhi mikronutrien, lingkungan yang tidak mendukung dan penyediaan perawatan yang tidak adekuat yang dapat mempengaruhi kondisi pertumbuhan balita. Asupan gizi merupakan salah satu faktor yang mempengaruhi terjadinya stunting. Mengetahui Perbedan pola pemberian nutrisi pada balita dengan stunting dan non-stunting di Desa Rempoah Kecamatan Baturaden. Penelitian ini adalah penelitian kuantitatif menggunakan observasi analitik, dengan desain cross sectional . Populasi dalam penelitian ini adalah kelompok kasus yaitu balita stunting dan kelompok kontrol yaitu balita non stunting. Jumlah sampel 68 terdiri dari 34 balita  stunting dan 34 balita non stunting, dengan metode teknik cluster sampling pengambilan sampel secara purposive sampling Pengambilan data menggunakan lembar kuesioner, analisa data menggunakan uji Chi-square. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan sebagian besar ibu pada balita yang mengalami stunting pola pemberian nutrisi tidak tepat terdiri dari 26 responden (76,5%) dan sebagian besar ibu pada balita yang non-stunting pola pemberian nutrisi tepat terdiri dari 23 responden (67,6%). Terdapat perbedaan pola pemberian nutrisi pada balita dengan stunting dan non-stunting di Desa Rempoah Kecamatan Baturaden (p-value= 0,0001). Terdapat Perbedaan Pola Pemberian Nutrisi Pada Balita Dengan Stunting dan Non-stunting Di Desa Rempoah Kecamatan BaturadenStunting is a condition resulted from the  failure to meet daily needs of micronutrients. An environment that is not supportive and providing inadequate treatment can affect the conditions of toddlers' growth. Nutrient intake is one of the factors that influences stunting.To illustrate the differences in providing nutritional pattern for toddlers with stunting and non-stunting in Rempoah village, Baturaden sub district. It was a quantitative study using analytic observation with a cross sectional design. The populations in this study were stunting toddlers as the case groups and non-stunting toddlers as the control group. There were 68 toddlers as the samples. There were 34 stunting toddlers and 34 non-stunting toddlers who classified by cluster sampling technique. The samples were collected by purposive sampling. Questionnaire sheets were used to collect the data. The data were analyzed by using Chi-square test. The results discovered that there were 26 respondents (76.5%) with stunting because of improper nutritional patterns. There were 23 respondents (67.6%) with non-stunting because of proper nutritional patterns. There were differences in the administration of nutritional patterns for toddlers with stunting and non-stunting in Rempoah Village, Baturaden District (p-value = 0,0001). OBJECTIVE: To identify the association between food group consumption frequency and serum lipoprotein levels among adults. METHODS: The observations were made during a cross-sectional survey of a representative sample of men and women over 20 years old living in Cotia county, S. Paulo, Brazil. Data on food frequency consumption, serum lipids, and other covariates were available for 1,045 adults. Multivariate analyses adjusted by age, gender, body mass index, waist-to-hip ratio, educational level, family income, physical activity, smoking, and alcohol consumption were performed. RESULTS: Consumption of processed meat, chicken, red meat, eggs and dairy foods were each positively and significantly correlated with LDL-C, whereas the intake of vegetables and fruits showed an inverse correlation. Daily consumption of processed meat, chicken, red meat, eggs, and dairy foods were associated with 16.6 mg/dl, 14.5 mg/dl, 11.1 mg/dl, 5.8 mg/dl, and 4.6 mg/dl increase in blood LDL-C, respectively. Increases of daily consumption of fruit and vegetables were associated with 5.2 mg/dl and 5.5 mg/dl decreases in LDL-C, respectively. Alcohol beverage consumption showed a significant positive correlation with HDL-C. CONCLUSIONS: Dietary habits in the study population seem to contribute substantially to the variation in blood LDL and HDL concentrations. Substantially CHD risk reduction could be achieved with dietary changes.
