The present study investigated the effect of salinity (Control: 1.8 dS/m, S1: 3.0 dS/m and S2: 4.5 dS/m) on the chemical composition and bioactive properties of three basil cultivars (Red Basil, Dark Opal Red and Basilico Rosso). Crop performance was not affected by increasing salinity in DoR and BaR. Fat, ash and carbohydrates content increased by salinity in DoR, whereas energetic value was negatively affected. Free sugars (total and individual compounds) increased under saline conditions (S2) in BaR, whereas reducing trends were observed for the main organic acids and tocopherols in all the cultivars. The major fatty acids were α-linolenic, linoleic and palmitic acids with no consistent salinity effects, while the richest polyphenols were sagerinic acid and eriodictyol-O-malonylhexoside. Finally, basil extracts showed moderate antioxidant and strong antifungal activity. In conclusion, salinity showed a genotype dependent effect on the chemical profile and bioactivities of the tested cultivars.

The present study evaluated the effect of maturity stage on the chemical composition of cardoon bracts. Plant material was collected in Greece at eight different maturation stages (C1–C8) and the chemical composition was analyzed in regard to lipidic fraction and the content in fatty acids, tocopherols, organic acids, and free sugars. Samples of late maturity (C6–C8) revealed the lowest lipidic content, while a total of 29 fatty acids was identified in all the samples, with palmitic, stearic, oleic, and eicosatrienoic acids present in the highest levels depending on harvesting time. Immature (C1) and mature (C8) bracts were more abundant in saturated fatty acids (SFA) than bracts of medium-to-late maturity (C5, C6), where the monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA) were the prevalent class. The α- and γ-tocopherols were the only identified isoforms of vitamin E, while the highest content was observed in sample C8 (199 µg/100 g dry weight (dw). The detected organic acids were oxalic, quinic, malic, citric, and fumaric acids, while fructose, glucose, sucrose, trehalose, and raffinose were the main detected sugars. The results of the present study allowed us to reveal the effect of maturity stage on cardoon bracts chemical composition and further valorize this byproduct by improving its bioactive compounds content.

Cardoon is a multi-purpose crop with several industrial applications, while the heads (capitula) are edible and commonly used in various dishes of the Mediterranean diet. Several reports in the literature study the chemical composition of the various plants parts (leaves, flower stalks, bracts, seeds) aiming to industrial applications of crop bio-waste, whereas for the heads, most of the studies are limited to the chemical composition and bioactive properties at the edible stage. In the present study, cardoon heads were collected at six different maturation stages and their chemical composition was evaluated in order to determine the effect of harvesting stage and examine the potential of alternative uses in the food and nutraceutical industries. Lipidic fraction and the content in fatty acids, tocopherols, organic acids, and free sugars were determined. Lipidic content decreases with the maturation process, while 22 fatty acids were detected in total, with palmitic, oleic, and linoleic acids being those with the highest abundance depending on harvesting time. In particular, immature heads have a higher abundance in saturated fatty acids (SFA), whereas the samples of mature heads were the richest in monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA). The α-tocopherol was the only isoform detected being present in higher amounts in sample Car B (619 µg/100 g dw). Oxalic, quinic, malic, citric and fumaric acids were the detected organic acids, and the higher content was observed in sample Car E (15.7 g/100 g dw). The detected sugars were fructose, glucose, sucrose, trehalose and raffinose, while the highest content (7.4 g/100 g dw) was recorded in sample Car C. In conclusion, the maturation stage of cardoon heads influences their chemical composition and harvesting time could be a useful means to increase the quality and the added value of the final product by introducing this material in the food and nutraceutical industries.

Medicinal plants play a crucial role in the search for components that are capable of neutralizing the multiple mechanisms of fungal resistance. Psidium salutare (Kunth) O. Berg is a plant native to Brazil used as both food and traditional medicine to treat diseases and symptoms such as stomach ache and diarrhea, whose symptoms could be related to fungal infections from the genus Candida. The objective of this study was to investigate the influence of seasonal variability on the chemical composition of the Psidium salutare essential oil, its antifungal potential and its effect on the Candida albicans morphogenesis. The essential oils were collected in three different seasonal collection periods and isolated by the hydrodistillation process in a modified Clevenger apparatus with identification of the chemical composition determined by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (GC/MS). The antifungal assays were performed against Candida strains through the broth microdilution method to determine the minimum fungicidal concentration (MFC). Fungal growth was assessed by optical density reading and the Candida albicans dimorphic effect was evaluated by optical microscopy in microculture chambers. The chemical profile of the essential oils identified 40 substances in the different collection periods with γ-terpinene being the predominant constituent. The antifungal activity revealed an action against the C. albicans, C. krusei and C. tropicalis strains with an IC50 ranging from 345.5 to 2,754.2 µg/mL and a MFC higher than 1,024 µg/mL. When combined with essential oils at sub-inhibitory concentrations (MIC/16), fluconazole had its potentiated effect, i.e. a synergistic effect was observed in the combination of fluconazole with P.salutare oil against all Candida strains; however, for C. albicans, its effect was reinforced by the natural product in all the collection periods. The results show that the Psidium salutare oil affected the dimorphic transition capacity, significantly reducing the formation of hyphae and pseudohyphae in increasing concentrations. The results show that P. salutare oil exhibits a significant antifungal activity against three Candida species and that it can act in synergy with fluconazole. These results support the notion that this plant may have a potential use in pharmaceutical and preservative products.

The aerial parts of Hypericum richeri Vill. subsp. grisebachii (Boiss.) Nyman were collected from two different locations in Croatia and subjected to hydrodistillation. GC/FID and GC/MS analysis of the isolated essential oils revealed 64 compounds representing 94.7% and 98.2% of the total oils. Predominant constituents in both samples were: germacrene D (10.9%; 6.0%), bicyclogermacrene (4.7%; 3.5%), α-pinene (6.8%; 6.9%), β-pinene (8.1%; 5.1%), decanoic acid (4.5%; 6.8%), β-caryophyllene (3.3%; 7.5%), δ-cadinene (7.0%; 4.4%), spathulenol (6.0%; 9.5%) and tetracosane (3.1%; 5.8%). Comparison of both samples revealed similarity in the chemical composition with minor fluctuations of constituent percentages. The chemical profile of Croatian oils was in general similar to those reported for other geographic areas regarding major mono- and sesquiterpene constituents. However, spathulenol, 5-cadinene and bicyclogermacrene were more abundant in Croatian oils. The presence of decanoic acid (4.5%; 6.8%) in Croatian oils was the major difference between acids and fatty acids derivatives. Higher abundance of alkanes (particularly tetracosane and docosane) was also noticed.

Experiments were conducted in 1976, 1977 and 1978 to examine the chemical composition of four flue-cured tobacco cultivars (Nicotiana tabacum L.) with a range of weather fleck tolerances. Weather fleck is associated with the air pollution injury to plants. The amount of surface wax was positively related to the weather fleck tolerance. Individual phenolic constituents, nonvolatile organic acids and fatty acids were not related to weather fleck tolerance in the tobacco cultivars used in the study.Key words: Weather fleck, flue-cured tobacco, surface waxes, phenolic constituents, organic and fatty acids

Abstract Background: There are a substantial number of papers in the scientific literature reporting on the chemical composition of the Aloe vera plant. None of these investigations are truly comprehensive nor address the differences in composition that occur through processing variations in fresh leaves and commercially available product forms. Objectives: This work was to analytically examine a range of these forms and compile the findings. Methods: Fresh A. vera leaves and a number of commercial aloe juice powders were investigated for their major chemical constituents. Samples included fresh leaves from China and Mexico, plus commercial powders from different manufacturers made from different plant parts and/or manufacturing processes. The test results include moisture, ash, fiber, protein, lipids, minerals, organic acids, free sugars, and polysaccharides. The analytical methods employed comprise inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectroscopy for minerals, high-performance anion-exchange chromatography equipped with pulsed amperometric detection for free sugars, HPLC for organic acids, and size exclusion chromatography (SEC)–multi-angle laser light scattering (MALS)–differential refractive index (dRI) for polysaccharide analyses. The absolute MW and MW distribution were determined using MALS measurement. Results: The major constituents of A. vera fresh leaf are fibers, proteins, organic acids, minerals, monosaccharides, and polysaccharides, which accounted for 85–95% of the total composition determined. In the commercial powdered aloe juice samples, four major components—organic acids, minerals, monosaccharides, and polysaccharides—accounted for 78–84% of the total composition. Apart from the four major components, products manufactured by ethanol precipitation contained high amounts of fiber and protein, while the free sugars were removed. In ethanol-precipitated products, the polysaccharide MW was less affected by manufacturing conditions and the concentration of aloe polysaccharides was higher than in products made in the nonethanol manufacturing processes. The overall chemical profiles were found to be consistent, except for the MW and content of polysaccharides in the commercial aloe samples analyzed, which were largely dependent on the types of manufacturing processes employed. Conclusions: This present study provides a comprehensive investigation of the major chemical composition of A. vera leaf and commercially derived products. The use of the SEC combined with MALS and differential RI detectors has proved to be an improved tool for the accurate determination of polysaccharide MW and contents of the various commercially available A. vera products in this study.

The aim of this work was to improve the knowledge about the potential of Douro region (North of Portugal) to produce table grapes of superior quality. Skin, pulp, and seeds of four table grapes ‘Alphonse Lavallée’, ‘Cardinal’, ‘Dona Maria’ and ‘Muscat Hamburgo’ produced in Dour region, collected at commercial maturity stage, were evaluated. Phenolic compounds, organic acids and sugars were determined in each cultivar and in the different parts of the grape by HPLC-DAD, while the antioxidant properties were evaluated by DPPH, Cuprac and lipid peroxidation assays. Phenolics from different classes were found: four anthocyanins (delphynidin, cyanidin, petunidin and malvidin), two hydroxibenzoic acids (gallic acid and protocatechuic acid), three hydroxycinnamic acids (caffeic, chlorogenic and coumaric acids), one flavonol (rutin), three flavan-3-ols ((+)-catechin, (-)-epicatechin, and (-)-epicagallocatechin)), one oligomer (procyanidin B2) and one stilbene (resveratrol). In addition, three organic acids (tartaric, malic and citric acids) and two types of sugars (glucose and fructose) were detected in all samples. Differences were found between cultivars (p<0.001) and sample material type (p<0.001). Skins presented the higher content in anthocyanins, seeds in flavan-3-ols and pulps in phenolic acids, organic acids and free-sugars. The cultivar ‘Cardinal’ showed the highest content in phytochemicals, while ‘Dona Maria’ was the cultivar with the lowest content. Nonetheless, the content of flavan-3-ols and organic acids in ‘Dona Maria’, associated with its higher antioxidant capacity, makes it an interesting choice as table grape from healthier point of view. According to our results, Douro region have proper environmental conditions to produce these table grapes.

We identified nutritionally relevant fatty acids and macro- and micronutrient content in Aspongopus nepalensis Westwood 1837 (Hemiptera), an insect used as food by the ethnic people of Arunachal Pradesh (North East India). Regarding macronutrients, crude lipids made up 38.35 %, fibre 33.47 %, protein 10.6 %, moisture 41.9 %, and ash 2.1 %. Lipid amounts were higher than those of most other insects. A. nepalensis was rich in Na: 1.02 %, K: 0.35 %, Ca: 0.12 %, Mg: 0.16 % and moreover, contained considerable amounts of Fe, Cu, Zn, and Mn. With regard to vitamins, A was most abundant (34.38 µg/100 g); C, D, E, and those of the B-complex were present, but less abundant, and monounsaturated fatty acid (MUFA) content was high (56.1 % of the total fat). Oleic and palmitic acids (46.41 % and 32.32 % of total fat) were the two major fatty acids in this insect’s oil. The latter also contained moderate amounts of stearic, palmitoleic, linoleic, myristic, eicosenoic, and linolenic acids.

Given the importance of colour in the general acceptance or rejection of a product, the use of colorants is a widespread practice, particularly in the food industry. At the same time, with the increasing consumers’ awareness of the health effects that some artificial colorants can exert, there is a growing tendency to prioritize foodstuffs containing natural additives. In this work, Morus nigra L. and Rubus fruticosus L. fruit juices were characterized in terms of anthocyanins, organic acids, free sugars, and tocopherols, as also regarding their bioactive properties. Given their richness in anthocyanins, this study also aimed to prepare different solid colouring formulations by the spray-drying technique, using as stabilizers maltodextrin and arabic gum. Six free sugars and two organic acids were detected in the fruit juices, as well as the four tocopherol isoforms. Two cyanidin derivatives were found in M. nigra (cyanidin-3-O-glucoside and cyanidin-O-rhamnoside) and other four in R. fruticosus (cyanidin-O-hexoside, cyanidin-3-O-glucoside, cyanidin-O-pentoside, and cyanidin-3-O-dioxaloilglucoside). The developed colouring formulations revealed a good stability over time, in terms of anthocyanin concentration and colour parameters, and revealed to be safe for consumption, either concerning their low microbial load and lack of cytotoxicity. Thus, they represent a promising natural alternative to the massively used artificial colorants.
